Lebanon’s new cabinet has agreed on a policy statement that recognises Hizbullah’s right to use arms against Israel, despite reservations from the Western-backed ruling majority.

The cabinet had already met eight times in an attempt to iron out the clause which refers to the party’s substantial arsenal, with some ministers arguing it undermines the authority of the state.

The clause in question states the right of “Lebanon, its government, its people, its army and its resistance” to liberate all Lebanese territory.

Hizbullah is commonly referred to as the resistance in Lebanon.

Christian members of the majority, including the Phalange Party and Lebanese Forces, argue that group’s arsenal runs counter to UN resolutions.

However Hizbullah, which has two ministers in the new 30-member unity cabinet, has made it clear the group’s right to use weapons against Israel is not up for debate.

The Shiite group, considered a terrorist organisation by Washington, maintains that Israel poses a serious threat and it is necessary to protect the country against future acts of aggression, citing the 2006 war between Israel and southern Lebanon.

Research is currently being performed with artificial limbs that would allow individuals not only to control those limbs but also to receive accurate feedback, sensations, from the prosthetic limb by utilizing lasers as a transmitter to individual nerves.

It is the year 2023. Hundreds of elderly people have undergone elective surgery in order to replace non functional or weak limbs with superior mechanical ones. However these same individuals are facing hard times as society begins to exponentially increase health and life expectancy. The elderly are perceived as unneeded group, leftovers from centuries past. The majority is simply waiting for the last of them to pass so that the age of endless youth can begin.

Tensions build as two retirement homes are attacked by young white males eager to find some remaining group against which to commit hate crimes and prove whatever if it is they hope to prove to one another. The government does little to compensate or protect those retired communities which are at greatest risk. In fact retirement as we know it is expected to be legislated out over the next two years.

The elderly are forced to take up action on their own. They alter their artificial limbs into powerful weapons. The old people cyborg uprising is begun.

Is the “wonga” running out for Africa’s mercenaries?

Africa’s infamous “dogs of war” may still be going strong, but it seems the rewards of the mercenary life aren’t quite what they used to be. 

Only this month, Britain’s Simon Mann won a pardon for his part in a foiled 2004 coup attempt on Equatorial Guinea, an old-style adventure whose glittering prize was the central African state’s multi-billion-dollar oil riches.

Contrast that to reports last week that a band of South African and other mercenaries had flown into the chaos of Guinea to train up a militia loyal to the incumbent junta leader — on a salary put at barely $3,500 a month.

That’s not bad money in most parts of the world, and there were reports that the company involved would have won extra remuneration in the form of minerals from Guinea’s fecund soil.

But it would have been peanuts to Mann, whose Equatorial Guinea coup was known as the “Wonga Plot” after the English slang for the money they hoped to yield in buckets.

While mercenaries are often seen as in the business of bringing governments down, it is not new that they should be trying to prop one up, as is happening in Guinea.

Mann himself is reported to have worked for the Angolan government in the 1990s to help it wrest back control of a key port from rebels, and again for Sierra Leonean authorities in the 2002 civil war there.

But what has changed since then is the economics. Thanks to the steady flow of new oil and mineral finds on the continent, the private security business in Africa is booming. A lot of the real pros now find there is steady money to made in guarding a gold mine in northern Congo, for example.

The more dubious end of the business is now increasingly the preserve of what some describe as cowboys.

“They couldn’t get enough people to do the job,” Henri Boshoff, a military analyst who served in the South African army, told Reuters of the mercenaries hired by Guinean junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara. “(The South Africans) were very desperate. They are not being very well paid.”

The Guinea mercenaries may not be in the same league as Mann and his fellow Wonga plotters, but their capacity to stir up trouble should not be underestimated.

The fact that Camara’s militia is being selected on tribal lines could add an alarming new ethnic dimension to Guinea’s instability.

Security sources also told Reuters that part of their job is to ensure the arrival of arms acquired by the junta in Ukraine in direct contravention of an international arms embargo.

South Africa is keen to get rid of its reputation as a training ground for hired guns and is officially investigating the activities of its nationals in Guinea.

Depending on what it finds, it may have to decide whether they are in breach of its
three-year-old anti-mercenary law that still contains grey areas as to what is mercenary behaviour.

Is it time for a more concerted effort by governments to end the days of Africa’s dogs of war? Or will the wonga run out by itself?

At least eight people have been killed in an explosion that happened at Arsenal 31, ammunitions depot on the outskirts of Ulyanovsk, 900km (550 miles) south-east of Moscow, Russia. This explosion comes within 10 days after explosions tore through the same site, the defense ministry says.

A bomb disposal squad was working on the site, loading live ammunition onto a lorry when the blast occurred. All the people killed are reported to be members of the squad. Two people were also injured in the accident. The blast took place at 1430hrs local time on Monday, when the team was clearing the affected area in the naval base which had been affected by the earlier accident on November 13.

The earlier explosions and resulting fire had left two soldiers dead when they attempted to decommission the weapons that were left after the fire had been put off.

The regional emergency ministry branch had previously warned the local residents that it was carrying out “planned detonation of unexploded shells” from the arms depot. The ministry had also promised that it was following all “safety measures“.

Russian ammunition depots as well as much of the ammunition still dates back to Soviet era and the ageing arsenal has been a major cause of concern. This is not the first time that such a mishap has occurred.

President Dmitry Medvedev is scheduled to visit Ulyanovsk on Tuesday to meet Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in a bid to resolve the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute over Nagorny Karabakh and to inaugurate a square named after Aliyev’s late father and former Azerbaijani leader, Heidar Aliyev.

Investigations are under way into both incidents. At the time of the 13 November incident, officials said artillery shells and torpedoes were kept at the arsenal.

This days the Swiss people gonna vote about an initiative for prohibition of arms exportation. Rarely there are things to vote about, who are so easy to decide, as any civilized human clearly understands that any arms lead to killing and killing is a no-go.

Sadly that nevertheless, the prohibition is by far not decided yet, as there is a big amount of not so civilized people who rather serve their greed than the common good. Of course there are those involved who fear about their employment as also the couple of CEOs who are the only ones really making profit out of it – it is understandable that all this people will vote against the prohibition. But they are about 3000 voters against 7 Million who have more to loose then just a job – especially their dignity.

Now the even more sad thing is that many of those 7 Million really beliefe they would gain anything from it. Instead, if one thing is for sure, it’s they will not see even one Franc out of the 700 Million Swiss Francs made from such exportations. Fact is, tax payers are funding each Franc of exportation profit with more then 2 Francs of amends and reparations for the affected countries and their escapees.

Many people just see the big wall in front of them, they are not able to think around the corner. If so, they could see that instead of a little profit, the result of allowing arms exportations is a triple loss: The famous Swiss neutrality* will be gone, as will its integrity and Swiss peoples dignity – and its selling it cheap. This are values that can not be measured in money, once gone, there is no buying them back.

By the end of this month, we will see the true face of Switzerland: A country with heart and honor, or one of greedy cowards.

*Yes, Switzerland is producing and exporting arms for decades. But it was always the decision of some few black sheeps. But now, the result of the votation will be an official decision of the whole country. Nevertheless, even if exportation will officially be allowed, it is still prohibited by the Bundesverfassung (the country’s founding documents), in there, Switzerland is declared to be a neutral country, which by definition is not possible while making profit from arms exportation.

en ka en:  for the ka of.  Let’s do the easy bit first.   The Sherlock Holmeses among you will instantly have deduced that the squiggly lines top and bottom correspond to the en. 

Elementary.   And speaking of elements, the squiggly line in hieroglyphs represents the watery one.  It’s a ripple of water:

It’s a zigzag line.  What else is there to say?  The ka, on the other hand…

The Egyptians didn’t have souls.  Or rather, they didn’t just have single souls.  The deceased Egyptian exploded into a whole menagerie of afterlife entities:  the body, the shadow, the akh (a heron-like bird with a lamp who circled the skies with the stars), the ba (a human-headed bird that hung around the necropolis and twittered mournfully – they’ve made a comeback on the Internet lately) and the ka, or life force.

The ka had its advantages and disadvantages.  A disadvantage was that it was confined to the tomb, unlike the ba and the akh.  Maybe it kicked the ba and the akh out, so it could get some elbow room, with the body and the shadow.  Maybe that was why the ba twittered mournfully.  The advantage was that the ka got to ascend the burial shaft, come out through the false door into the offering chapel and feast upon the food and drink brought by the family or magically invoked by the passer-by.  The ka was the life force, and it fed upon the life force of the food.  But we’ve been through all this before.

The hieroglyph for ka is a pair of upraised arms, as found on the head of this royal ka statue:

What a beautiful, slender yet well moulded pair of arms and  shoulders, and delicate, detailed hands.  They didn’t always put so much work into the hieroglyphs,

although they have taken care to paint this ka the dark red colour they used for male skin (men being more likely to be outdoors than women, and therefore more tanned).  I draw my kas very simply:  three straight lines plus a little crescent at each end for the hands.

NB:  this ka is not to be confused with the ka meaning bull of a few posts ago.  Katie Hughes tweeted a good idea about that some time ago:  kh1369  @SusanLlewellyn Egyptians would be sustaining the ka (“spirit”) with ka (meat)? What a multi-purpose word! Also, is “kau” like “cow”? Easy!  She’s great at making these connections.

drowning. Got all these arms but they’re useless. Lack of oxygen and perspective brings you down. I guess the alienation gets you there to begin with…but…alienation and extra, but useless, limbs are probably one in the same.

Everyone is up in arms regarding the government’s new guidelines regarding mammograms for women. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force is recommending that women should have their first mammogram done at the age of 50, and then repeat it once every two years.

The American Cancer Society says that women should get their first mammogram when they are 40 and then continue yearly until the age of 75.

Apparently there are many women up-in-arms over these new guidelines. The question is why? Why are we so alarmed about a new idea on this matter? Every month research and science are coming up with new levels or statistics or “facts” about one medical condition or another.

A recent European study has now deemed that men should only have prostate exams once every four years along with a PSA test. The American Cancer Society recommends men get yearly testing once they are over 50 years old.

There is no reason women have to be alarmed by the new standard being offered for mammograms. If they want a yearly test they can get one. If they have cancer concerns before they reach 50, the test is still available. Yes, women have been saved by mammograms. They have also been scared by false positive readings or misreadings. Some women have also undergone cancer treatment because they have been diagnosed as having breast cancer when they do not.

In my own family my great-aunt had her yearly mammogram, which was negative. A month later she felt a lump in her breast. It was diagnosed as cancerous. She had treatment and it was caught in time, but no thanks to the mammogram.

Every woman has a different idea about what is right for them. If you believe in mammograms you will continue to have them because you deem it necessary. If you don’t believe in them, you may listen to the new guidelines  and evaluate if you think this is a good measure of action for you.

Either way, we have to decide what is best for us individually, new guidelines or not.
