So Monday returns and it seems music hasn’t ever left.  Have you heard Fever Ray?  I have, maybe not enough though.  This band fits truly into the new style of indie band.  They sound like nothing else (Sort of like The Dirty Projectors sound like nothing else).  Until now I haven’t been able to understand Fever Ray but I’m sure there is something in the music that I can be made to understand after a million listens or so.

Yesterday I heard on the news that 15 Million people in Canada have had their H1N1 shot. Which, seeing as how the 2006 census counted around 32 million people, is quite close to half.  Well I know Handy isn’t jumping on this flu shot train, and I’m not either.  Never had one, not quite sure why we’re all so freaked out at the moment.

How do we stay healthy?  Well the mustache eats loads of raw onions and garlic (no joke at all) which makes him even more attractive (now that was a joke).  I on the other hand try to maintain a well balanced regimen of sleep.  It makes more sense to miss half a day of work so that you can sleep in, than missing weeks of work and then having to catch up.  But then, the biggest joke might be me talking about work.

Good morning everyone,

Just a quick reminder that we play Nov 20 (tomorrow) at Louis’.  I’m excited for our set, Voyno is excited for the set and Handy is…Handy.

So silence.

That was good wasn’t it?  I thought so at least.  The importance of it all is the contrast between noise/music and its opposite.  As an example in another area: If everyone wore white all of the time, that crazy cat who wore some coloured shoes or scarves would be super hip.  Same for music.  That crazy cat who takes the time to add some silence to their day, solo or song is the one who is super hip.

So, as promised yesterday; Some news for you.

1. Our new 3p is named (Bleary To New Zealand), has pictures (which look pretty) and is almost all recorded (Keep on Voyno’s case to finish the vocals).  We are hoping to have it out by December keeping in mind scheduling etc.

2. Friday November 20th we’re playing at Louis!  Alongside us we’ve got Foam Lake, The Warbrides, and The Constants so it will be a rocking good time as usual.

3. Dec 11th we’ll be playing in Edmonton at the Starlite Room.  Come see us if you live there, travel a bit and check us out, or demand your local live music bar invite us to play.

Well it took me long enough to get to the point where I could realize how great this cat is.  Just like Sly Stone I was told by many reputable sources that Chet Atkins was a great player and just like Sly Stone I left it for another day.  Well let’s be honest here.  The Beatles LOVED him, Mark Knopfler loves him and he just so happens to have some great songs.

Last I checked it’s Monday, but I can get these things wrong too.  Regardless of my chronological disabilities, Voyno, Hoover, JP, Silviu and I went to the new Michael Jackson movie This Is It last night.  Goooooood Times.

Pros:  Seeing Michael Jackson outside of the immediate media spotlight was wonderful.  That cat knew his music inside and out and made sure each dancer and musician knew it too.  I also liked that he wanted his in ear monitors to give him the sound that the audience was hearing.

Cons:  It was more about dancing than music. If you’re a dancer you’d call that a pro but I don’t dance.  The movie was loooooong, and my bored mind could have done with some more stimulation of some sort.

Music is all around us!

Why then would we need to listen to music any more?  Well it’s quite simple friends, quite simple indeed.  While the radio might be on all day at work and in your car.  While you might have an ipod with loads of great music on it for your day.  Or maybe you just listen to streaming internet radio we all need a chance to judge the music we listen to.

Tonight us boyos are having a listening party.  We’ve only just started this but we’ve set up a few rules.  Everyone brings a song, songs, or album and a reason why we are listening to it.  That way everyone can get together on the same wavelength and hopefully cut through all of the music we listen to everyday.

So if that is how genius actually works I’d be thrilled, but there are probably far more numbers that I just wouldn’t understand involved.  Regardless of it’s inner workings, the Genius toolbar has become an important part of any itunes users listening experience.  I know of a few people who don’t like genius for some strange reason.  I’ve realized that it can take away any problems you might have whilst deciding on what to listen to.  Which is great in a party setting or in a van full of guys who like different music.

Now fill your iTunes with enough Japanese Simon & Garfunkel to make a solid genius playlist.

Long long ago, it actually scares me a bit just how long ago this was, a friend asked if I had ever heard Sly & The Family Stone.  I had, but wasn’t aware of the group’s name.

Here we are almost 10 years later and I’ve just cracked into their super good stuff.  If you have some time, get some discs/vinyl/cassette tapes and listen to a great group.

This is a repost from The New Rockstar Philosophy Blog that I quite rather enjoyed.

I stumbled into a guitar shop the other day and was astounded by the virtuosity around me. There were some serious players but no rock stars. That’s because technical ability can only get you so far. Not many people care if you can shred faster than Van Halen. What they do care about is if you can connect with them like Lennon/McCartney. Therefore I’ve come with the awkwardly titled: Top 4 Reasons to Work on Songwriting vs technical skills.

1. Songs are shareable, technical skills are not – Sure you can teach technical ability once you’ve mastered it. But that takes time most don’t have. Play someone Wonderwall and they’ll feel that and remember it from the first instant.
2. Songwriting will make you more money – Yes session folks can make a lot of scratch but they’re hired guns. Although they may bring much to the table, they’re still replaceable. A great song isn’t something as disposable. No one is going to turn away Hey Jude ya dig?
3. Songwriting is move-able – What happens when you leave you instrument at home? A songwriter is able to use whatever they need to make it happen. When your only skill is playing drum solos, being away from your kit may hinder things.
4. Nobody remembers the shredders – Van Halen only got huge because of great songs. You only have to look at Yngwie Malmsteen to see the difference. Without great songs your career won’t go far.

The funny thing is that the best songwriters are also amazing players.  Look at the chord changes inYesterday and you’ll understand that Paul McCartney is as phenomenal of a player as he is a songwriter. And Joni Mitchell could probably slay most guitar players out there. But they always had phenomenal melodies to underscore everything, and that’s why the world listened in the first place.
