GPS-devices are becoming more and more commonly used in society. A lot of people use a navigation system,  like for instance  Tom Tom or Garmin, to drive their car to an unknown destination. Additionally, hikers use GPS to navigate in rough unpopulated areas like moutains or deserts. GPS-technology is more and more found in smartphones and other personal media devices such as laptops and netbooks. In such devices GPS technique is combined with other functions like the Internet or a camera. A combination of these functions will provide endless opportunies that are going beyond our imagination. There are a lot of examples, but I will name two applications that were the trendsetters.

Geotagging

Geotagging is adding geographical data to the message you want to show. That message can be anything (for instance, a picture, a text, etc.)  Here is an example: while you are on a holiday and you see something nice, you take a picture of it and add geographical data. Or you can tag a place other people have to see, you put the picture on your blog with the GPS data and other people can go there too. Google maps is a good example of en masse Geotagging.  Wiki

Geocaching

Geocaching differs slightly from geotagging. With Geocaching you can upload GPS information to your GPS device so you can follow a route. Anybody can add GPS tours, so after time a lot of different tours become available. Examples: When you plan to visit a city (like perhaps Berlin) you can download a GPS tour to your device and you’ll have a free tour through Berlin that is made by the citizens of Berlin. In this way you won’t have any bugging commercial information, but instead the real deal that’ll provide you with sights that Berliners love to go to.

Other example, in your neighbourhood you can download a tour wich is leading to a treasure. On the place the treasure should be hidde there is often something to find you can add something to. This way ou can show other people you found the treasure. This way you enyous your neighbourhood a whole different way.

As designers in training, we learn how to start up a project. In this post I will explain how we start up the project.

This is a team-based project, so a teamname is needed. After a couple of hours of brainstorming, a name is found thas satisfies all the teammembers. Our teamname is TeamplAy. We have selected this name because we believe crossmedia has te be fun, otherwise people won’t use it. If something is fun you can play with it. The big ‘A’ stands for our team letter.

Mission, vission and strategy

To create a crossmedia concept, we first need a mission. A mission defines the raison of an organisation and answers the question ‘why are we doing what we are doing?’ A mission is timeless, but always applicable at any concrete moment.  A mission is often associated with a vision. A vision is a consistent personal view on the future and shows the most ideal situation. A vision is the input for a to follow strategy: How do you want to achieve your goals?

By following our strategy we will finish with a crossemedia concept.

La Roma vince contro il Fulham in una partita non facile che la vede prima andare sotto e poi riemergere dalle ceneri di un brutto primo tempo.

La gara

Le formazioni
La Roma deve fare a meno dei lungo degenti Totti e Juan ai quali si aggiungono anche Burdisso e Vucinic. In difesa titolare Andreolli a far coppia con Mexes e sulle fasce Riise e Cassetti. Cicinho titolare sulla fascia di centrocampo insieme a De Rossi, Pizarro e Guberti. In attacco a riposo Menez sostituito da Julio Baptista che fa coppia con Okaka. Per il Fulham 11 titolare.

Il primo tempo: Roma molto macchinosa che non riesce a costruire azioni decenti. Fulham totalmente in difensiva ma al primo affondo Andreolli sdraia in area Kamara ed è rigore. Dal dischetto va proprio Kamara che non sbaglia. 1-0 per il Fulham alla prima ed unica azione della partita. La Roma non ci sta: da un cross di Cicinho interviene Mexes e palla di poco sul fondo.
Il Fulham prova a farsi rivedere ma stavolta Andreolli non commette errori. Baptista prova la rovesciata ma senza successo. Al 42′ la Roma recrimina un rigore per un evidente fallo di mano su tiro di Mexes, ma l’arbitro lascia correre. La Roma ci prova ma senza mai riuscirci e termina il primo tempo tra i fischi della curva.

Il secondo tempo: Ranieri lascia sotto la doccia Doni e Cicinho ed entrano Julio Sergio e Taddei. Hodgson fa entrare Nevland al posto di Kamara. Scelta quantomai sbagliata: dopo soli 4′ Nevland atterra De Rossi con un fallaccio da dietr e per l’arbitro è espulsione diretta. In superiorità numerica la Roma continua a non macinare gioco ma i vari tentativi di Guberti, Taddei e Julio Baptista cominciano a preoccupare la difesa inglese. Entra anche Menez al posto di Guberti. Al 23′ arriva finalmente il gol della Roma: sugli sviluppi di un corner Riise calcia uno dei suoi soliti bolidi da fuori area e con la complicità di Schwarzer (che forse non vede partire il pallone e forse viene tratto in inganno da una leggera deviazione di Bjorn Riise) pareggia i conti. Ancora la Roma con De Rossi ma il tiro finisco di poco alto. Solo 6′ dopo il gol la Roma raddoppia: Taddei crossa al centro Okaka incorna di testa e Schwarzer (ancora colpevole) non trattiene. Okaka viene sommerso dai compagni!!! La Roma non è paga del risultato e Okaka prova una mezza rovesciata che però non impensierisce Schwarzer. Il Fulham rimane addirittura in 9 per espulsione di Konchesky per un grave fallo su De Rossi.
A pochi minuti dal termine Julio Baptista manca un gol piuttosto semplice ma speriamo che se lo sia tenuto per la prossima volta, per ora va bene anche così.

Pro & Contro

Pro: Sicuramente Andreolli dopo un inizio cosi cosi si fa perdonare del clamoroso fallo con degli interventi e delle uscite sempre sicure e pulite. De Rossi viene falcidiato dai falli ma gioca una partita di grandissima quantità nonostante siamo abituati ad un più alto standard qualitativo. Okaka ci mette grinta e voglia e viene giustamente ripagato. Riise perfetto sia in attacco che in difesa. Un plauso anche a Ranieri che azzecca i cambi.
Contro: Nonostante la superiorità numerica sembrava la Roma in 10. Cicinho e Julio Baptista sono lontani anni luce dalla forma migliore. Guberti tanta voglia e poco più: non azzecca nè dribbling nè cross.

Two weekends ago, I submitted my application for readmission to grad school.

A brief backstory:

Spring and summer of ‘08, I was going nowhere at work. Experiments were stalled. I wasn’t generating any data and none of my techniques were working. Every “established” lab technique was broken in a fun and exciting way, usually involving the equipment, and I couldn’t make any headway. I was getting increasingly frustrated and, in retrospect, wonder how hard I really tried. I felt like I was pushing hard, but now I wonder. At the end of the summer there was no money left to fund me. It was suggested that I take a leave of absence, then come back “recharged.” In retrospect, again, perhaps I should have.

Instead, I worked for free in the lab all fall, trying to “prove” my dedication and commitment to the lab, the department, and the program. And hoping that one of my experiments would work, and I could show that I was a productive member of the lab. They didn’t and I didn’t, so I was presented with two options: leave (either with or without a master’s, assuming I could write up what I had into a reasonable thesis), or find a new lab on my own.

I was crushed. Humiliated. Outside of my immediate family, I don’t think I told anyone. A few people in grad school, maybe, since it would be immediately obvious when I wasn’t around. And after that? I guess I went into hiding for a while. Cut myself off from friends and the modest support system that I have. The whole situation was too painful to discuss. In fact, it’s even hard to write about now.

Over the winter I applied for several lab tech jobs, and eventually got an offer that was decent. The PI needed someone with molecular biology experience for the research he wanted to do and somehow I was able to convince him that I was up to the challenge, despite my lack of faith in my own abilities. Through the spring and summer the work went well. Experiments actually worked. I was useful and a valuable member of the lab. Well, there were only three of us, but that’s beside the point. I contributed. And I started to think that perhaps all the crap that I went through wasn’t entirely my fault.

Towards the end of the summer there was a review that came across both my and my boss’s radars, combining the stem cell research we were doing with the epigenetics research that I had been doing for the previous four years. We sat and talked for a good hour about the review and the knowledge that I could uniquely bring to our lab. I walked out of the meeting with one thought in my head: “How do I turn this into a thesis?”

What a ridiculous idea! My wife was finishing her residency and had taken a job in Chattanooga. My 33rd birthday was approaching. My last attempt at school ended in failure. And yet, I couldn’t get it out of my head.

So, here I am, a few months later, with my application submitted. I’ve talked with the program director who seems very supportive, so I’m confident that there won’t be problems with my readmission. I’m going to change my major from biochemistry and molecular biology to neuroscience, which means I’ll have to take a bunch of classes in the spring. Classes which, honestly, I was probably going to take regardless…I don’t have enough background for a neuroscience thesis. Still, having to take the classes versus choosing to take the classes makes them that much more daunting. I really believe that I have the ability to be successful, but the voices are still there, whispering at me every time I close my eyes. What if I can’t hack it? What happens when it gets hard? What if I fail, again?

For any of you reading this who don’t know, Emma’s moving up to Chattanooga. She finished her residency and has a great job in a primary care clinic, starting at the end of this month. We’re driving up tomorrow with a small Uhaul loaded with her personal stuff — clothes, yarn, books; you know, the essentials — and then she’s moving up full-time next Sunday.

My plans (for the time being, at least) are to stay here though December. Emma found an excellent furnished corporate apartment in the middle of downtown, just two blocks from the aquarium, and only about 15 minutes from her new clinic. We’re going to alternate visits, with me going up there for one weekend, her coming back for the next, then taking a week off. Other than those alternate weekends, it’s going to be just me and the cats at home. Pizza and beer, anyone?

Vice-President Joseph Biden, President Obama and Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan

The over-the-top drama is being led by conservative blogger/nutcase Michelle Malkin and conservative radio screecher Dana Loesch. They are so offended that they are calling September 8th the “National Truancy Day.” Yes, you got the right. They are asking people to pull their kids out of school that day!

Surely they realize that August was “National Truancy Prevention Month”, where people around the country were actually trying to keep kids in school. So far schools in Texas are making the viewing optional, according to the Christian Science Monitor. Others in Columbia, Missouri are ignoring the address altogether.

Lets start with Texas. Great state, lots of cool places to see, popular sports teams, but if you are interested in geting a great education in Texas, I have bad news for you. Out of all of our states literacy rates, Texas ranks 49, next to last place, which is held by Mississippi. Missouri fares a little better with a ranking of 30. So if I was an educator in these two states, having my students listen to a positive message from the President that tells them about the importance of education, it would be a no-brainer. Unless I was a Conservative…

National Day of Silence

We shouldn’t be surprised by these actions. Earlier this year, a national coalition of right wing Christian and anti-tolerance organizations promoted truancy as a response to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s 13th Annual National Day of Silence on April 17. Students were asked to take some form of a vow of silence on that day to bring attention to anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from more than 7,500 middle and high schools participated in 2008. But of course, the right wing groups called it the equivalent to the Hitler Youth. Sound familiar? What is the right-wings fascination with describing Progressive programs they don’t like by using Hitler comparisons. What’s up with that?

According to ThinkProgress..On Fox News this morning, NPR’s Juan Williams defended Obama’s effort as “innocuous,” saying that “on the face of it, it seems to be almost patriotic…you should hear the president speak about the value of education, staying in school, hard work.” But Family Research Council President Tony Perkins wasn’t convinced that the speech would be benign. To buttress his argument, Perkins asserted that “the president really hasn’t pushed any educational reform issues yet in his administration”:

Perkins is speaking without regard for the facts when he says that Obama hasn’t “pushed any educational reform issues yet.” In fact, Obama has put a strong emphasis on education reform. For instance, the stimulus bill contained an unprecedented investment in education, which was aimed at incentivizing reform:

To help struggling schools, the federal government will use stimulus funding to encourage states to expand school days, reward good teachers, fire bad ones and measure how students perform compared with peers in India and China, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said yesterday.

So ok, I understand we have a two-party system and that they are the supposedly loyal opposition party…I get that. But why should we allow them to politicize education for our kids? Seriously, if the kids survived George W. Bush reading them ‘My Pet Goat‘, I’m sure they can survive a educational pep talk by President Obama.

My message to them, leave the damn kids alone and stop makin’ stuff up!

Bush pitched his education plan in a speech broadcast live to school classrooms nationwide. Please take a moment to read Jed’s diary entitled Another wingnut meme goes down the drain .

With nearly $5 billion in stimulus funds at his disposal, Duncan has the chance to be a sort of educational kingmaker, doling out money to states as he sees fit. He’s also got something intangible but just as important — a close friend in the White House, in President Barack Obama.

And that’s a combination that some are saying could end up making Duncan the most powerful education secretary in the history of the job.
Duncan has extensive experience in educational policy and management, but has not been a teacher. In 1992, Duncan became director of the Ariel Education Initiative, a program to enhance educational opportunities for children on Chicago’s South Side that was started by John W. Rogers, Jr.. In 1996, along with Rogers, he was part of a network that funded and supported Ariel Community Academy. In 1999, he became Deputy Chief of Staff for former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas. Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed Duncan to serve as CEO of Chicago Public Schools on June 26, 2001.

Duncan was a fellow in the Leadership Greater Chicago’s class of 1995, and a member of the Aspen Institute’s Henry Crown Fellowship Program, Class of 2002. In May 2003, he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Lake Forest College.

On December 16, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama nominated Duncan for Secretary of Education. Duncan had known Obama for over a decade and played recreational basketball with him, including the day Obama was elected president. Duncan was confirmed by the full Senate on January 20.

“This is an unprecedented chance for Obama and Duncan to put their stamp on education. It’s pure Obama, pure Duncan. It’s a chance to have an unfiltered education policy,” said Amy Wilkins of the Education Trust, an independent advocacy group. “Never ever have they had $5 billion to decide what to do in the education system.”

That close friendship was on display recently when Obama stood next to Duncan to announce the criteria for the nearly $4.35 billion in “Race to the Top” funds, one of the largest single investments in education reform in American history.

Duncan is not popular in all left wing circles. The Huffington post had this to say about him:

“Duncan’s policies now threaten to alienate voters nationwide. The latest embarrassment is a national “tour,” where Duncan plans to join Al Sharpton and Newt Gingrich in cities around the country, pushing for more privatization, including the proliferation of more charter schools.

The fact that Duncan is joining these two disreputable figures reveals troubling insensitivity on his part. The last time Gingrich got involved in the education issue, Newt proposed forcibly removing children from inner-city parents to put them in orphanages and boarding schools.

As for Al Sharpton, he was prompted to become involved in the education issue in the first place in return for a $500,000 donation from a prominent hedge-fund, which was lobbying the state and the city to acquire off-track betting parlors. The cool half a million Sharpton received, improperly funneled through a tax-free pro-charter school organization, kept him out of jail when he was fighting federal charges of tax evasion and other illegal activities.

Even worse are Duncan’s funding proposals. His $4.3 billion slush fund called “Race to the Top” is designed to reward school districts and states for implementing a narrow set of unproven strategies, based on the deregulatory biases of the corporate world. These schemes include pressuring states to raise their caps on charter schools and instituting teacher performance pay based on student test scores, despite the lack of any supporting research or proof of success in the real world.”

Duncan was raised in Hyde Park, Chicago, where his father Starkey Duncan was a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, and his mother Susan Morton runs the Sue Duncan Children’s Center, an after school program serving African-American youth on Chicago’s South Side. Duncan spent a great deal of his free time at his mother’s center tutoring other students. Some of his childhood friends were John W. Rogers, Jr., CEO of Ariel Capital Management (now Ariel Investments) and founder of the Ariel Community Academy, Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul, actor Michael Clarke Duncan, singer R. Kelly, IBM Fellow Kerrie Holley and martial artist Michelle Gordon. Duncan’s spoken accent at this time led at least one college basketball coach to assume that he was of African-American descent.
Education:
Duncan attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he aspired to a future career coaching basketball or playing the sport professionally.He then graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in sociology in 1987. His senior thesis, for which he took a year’s leave to do research in Kenwood, in inner-city Chicago, was entitled The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass. Though unpublished, it was later cited by other authors.

Vi gikk videre til Røde Kors. Og der fikk vi høre masse vås om livredning og slikt. Etter det fikk vi Capser og T-skjorter! Hurra hurra.

Alegre voy al campo de batalla

alzando al cielo el rojo pabellón.

Fuego tendrá mi grito de victoria,

lumbre la noche, vida la pasión…

OH LALA FRAU DOKTORIN!!!
Liebe Leute,

das Sehvermögen ist ein wichtiger Faktor in meinem Leben und wer mich kennt, weiß, dass ich mir jeden Abend einen Tropfen Olivenöl in die Augen gebe, wegen der Pflege.

Umso schlimmer traf mich da natürlich die Erkenntnis, dass ich mittlerweile immer öfter auf eine Brille angewiesen bin, teilweise sogar im Schlaf!

Wenn man sein eigenes Publikum nicht mehr erkennt, die gelangweilten und verärgerten Gesichter nicht mehr unterscheiden kann, dann ist das einfach traurig.

Und in der Öffentlichkeit darf ich keine Brille tragen wegen der Fans, die mich auf ewig konserviert in meiner jugendlichen Schönheit von vor 2 Jahren sehen wollen!

Das ist jetzt aber auch schon wieder vier Jahre her und in dieser Zeit ist es mit mir bergab gegangen, meine Herren!

Auf der Bühne finde ich mich meist nur noch zurecht mit meinem Geruchssinn, denn die Jungs aus der Band haben alle ihren eigenen Gestank, der mir zeigt, ob ich gerade eher bei „Dampfqualle“ Fischer stehe, oder in der Nähe von „Faulbrot“ Köster.

Aber dass ich mir mal mit Freude einen Erotik-Film angeschaut habe, das ist schon ewig her.

Macht auch einfach keinen Spaß, wenn Du nicht siehst, ob das jetzt von Beate Uhse ist oder Heinz Sielmann!

So ging’s jedenfalls nicht weiter, deswegen hab ich vor einer Woche eine Laseroperation gemacht, wo einem die Augen systematisch verdampft werden bis zur optimalen Sehkraft.

Man muss sich das ungefähr so vorstellen, als ob Dir da einer mit ner Taschenlampe in die Glotzer scheint, nur dass die ganz klein ist und dafür aber mit der vollen Power von 100 Duracell arbeitet.

Eigentlich ganz einfach, die Sache.

Dass bei mir aber mal wieder trotzdem nicht alles optimal abläuft, war ja wohl klar, oder?

Das ging schon los bei der Voruntersuchung, wo die Augen vermessen werden mit ganz obskuren Apparaturen.

Die strenge Ärztin befahl mir erstmal mich frei zu machen, auch untenrum, was mir nicht direkt einleuchtete im Zusammenhang mit der Fehlsichtigkeit.

Aber von der Untersuchung her lief dann alles zu meiner vollsten Befriedigung, deswegen hab ich Frau Doktor auch doppelte Praxisgebühr in die Hand gedrückt.

Ein paar Tage später war dann die eigentliche Operation: Ich natürlich voller Vorfreude, extra fein gemacht und hab auch Seife benutzt, doch im OP-Saal erwartet mich jetzt nur ein freundlicher Herr, der den Eingriff vornehmen wird.

Als erstes bekomme ich ein paar Tropfen, die das Schmerzempfinden dämpfen und die sind auch absolut nötig: Bevor der Laser mit dem Verdampfen beginnen kann, muss erstmal die oberste Schicht vom Auge abgelöst werden.

Dazu benutzt der Doktor eine Art Schälmesser, das er mir einmal quer durch die Linse zieht. Das Auge hält er dabei mit Daumen und Zeigefinger, die er aber vorher mit Kreide bestäubt hat, damit nichts verrutscht.

Das brennt schon ordentlich!

Dann soll es eigentlich losgehen, aber der Laser funktioniert nicht richtig, der ist viel zu stark eingestellt und piekst den Doktor in den Hintern, als er dagegen stößt.

Das tut natürlich sehr weh und ein Tritt ins Getriebe befördert den blöden Apparat in die Reparaturbedürftigkeit.

Was nun?

Halb benommen lieg ich auf dem Tisch, das linke Auge neben mir und es kann nicht mehr lange warten, weil ich es ja nicht durch Wimpernschlag feuchthalten kann.

Behelfsmäßig spucke ich ab und zu rüber mit einer Technik, die ich mir während der Bandproben für die letzte Tournee angeeignet habe.

Doch der Arzt hat glücklicherweise in Russland gelernt und weiß sich auch in dieser vertrackten Situation zu helfen:

Er nimmt ein Feuerzeug und hält davor eine starke Lupe, so kann er auch ohne moderne Technik nach der traditionellen Methode mit viel Geschick und Augenmaß meine Augäpfel kunstvoll bearbeiten!

Jetzt, nach 2 Wochen, läuft das Faulwasser schon deutlich besser ab und die Verbände sollen auch bald runter.

Für den Fall, dass doch was schiefgegangen ist, hat Manager Arne aber schon vorgesorgt:

Schön mit Sonnenbrille auf die Bühne und dann Songs von Ray Charles bis zum Abwinken!
