If you’ve never been to the San Diego Museum of Art for their yearly event, Art Alive, this is the year you should participate. The San Diego Museum of Art challenges floral designers to make the artistic masterpieces housed in their museum come alive through their floral interpretations. This three day event, began April 26 and ending on April 28, will fill the museum with thousands of flowers and, hopefully, thousands of visitors. The pictures in this blog post are examples of what you can expect to see at Art Alive.

Upon entering the museum is an awesome floral display from famous Marc Chagall’s granddaughter, Bella Meyer. A great color display focusing on creation of floral arrangements much the way that artists paints. Floral designers of all levels, from amateur to professional, gather at the museum to create floral sculptures that mimic famous pieces of art. The sculptures of flower arrangements depict images painted on canvas, from portraits to landscapes. Throughout the festivities, these living floral arrangements will be placed beside the famous pieces of art they are interpreting.

The museum’s masterpieces truly come alive as they are interpreted by these creative floral designers. You will be surprised and delighted to see how imagination comes alive when flowers meet with paint. The floral designers make use of light, color, and structural ingenuity to make these canvas paintings take on a new dimension. Art Alive celebrates artistic masterpieces of all types.

The three day-long event will be packed with art and colorful activities. The event began with an opening celebration on April 26 and ended today Sunday April 28. The Art Alive exhibition will also included fun events for children and families. These events will be geared towards the idea that art is alive.

Flowers After Hours is another nighttime event in which guests can peruse the floral art exhibit while sampling tasty hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Behind the scenes, these floral designers are competing hard to create their own artistic masterpieces inspired by the famous works located at the San Diego Museum of Art.

If you plan on visiting the Art Alive exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art, be prepared to pay an entry fee. Rest assured that this fee is going to a good cause–Art Alive is one of the museum’s greatest fundraising events. The proceeds will go towards special exhibitions, educational outreach programs, and art conservation projects.

Sounds like an evening of Alice in Wonderland flowery sing-a-longs… This month, I’m featuring

Sounds like an evening of Alice in Wonderland flowery sing-a-longs…

This month, I’m featuring style inspired by San Diego’s art and museum scene. This coming Friday through Sunday at the San Diego Museum of Art, Art Alive is happening – an evening of DJ spins, dancing, cocktails, tantalizing treats and art-making activities. The décor is stunning! The museum is featuring floral art for the signature fundraiser, as an annual floral exhibition. It features more than 100 floral interpretations of famous works and transformation this year by Bella Meyer, granddaughter of artist Marc Chagall, including a floating moss angel, birch forests, and clouds of baby’s breath flowers. Also, part of the event is a screening of floral feature film, Little Shop of Horrors, a floral Class, and an after-party. Put on your floral party hat (because they really do) and indulge in a Alice-like event with flowers everywhere!

With Spring in the air, I couldn’t resist pulling some of my favorite pieces from the Zara Spring 2013 look book that were not just floral but really making flowers come alive. They are not your typical floral pieces which are rampant this Spring season. In fact, I’m that brat that will purposefully not buy floral garments just because it’s Spring. These picks, in particular, are vibrant and unusual in their floral montage making for what I consider wearable floral art. Check out the stunning pieces inspired by the beautiful floral arrangements from the event. A wonderful curation, practicing for the tanchi way (especially for the panza).

Printed Jacquard Top

All that’s left is to enjoy the evening looking as chic and spectacular as the flora décor! Don’t forget as the flowers once revealed in the Wonderland, you can learn a lot from flowers but just don’t get eaten by a Venus Fly Trap!

San Diego is a wonderful town for year-round fun. However, there is still something special about the spring. The cooler winter winds give way to warm breezes, and the entire coast comes alive with growth and color. The sun shines longer, the trees start to fill out, and the flowers begin to bloom in earnest, enlivening the city with new vibrancy and energy.

Many tourists plan summer getaways in San Diego, and others opt for winter retreats. Because of this, many festivals and tourist attractions are teaming in those prime months. However, those who venture to San Diego in the spring may be pleasantly surprised by all the exhilarating options. To get started, consider the following list of springtime activities in San Diego.

1. Art Alive. Art Alive is a spectacular annual event that takes advantage of the vivid array of blooms in the spring. Organized by over 100 floral designers, Art Alive transforms the San Diego Museum of Art into a flower-filled paradise. Borrowing inspiration from the museum’s timeless collection, Art Alive recreates the artwork in floral form, giving guests a scintillating display of beauty and creativity. The 2013 event starts on April 25 and last for three days.

2. Butterfly Jungle. This yearly event lasts for three weeks and is hosted by the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. During this event, the Safari Park fills its Hidden Park display with thousands of butterflies, giving guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with the insects. The butterflies come in all colors and sizes, making the Butterfly Jungle a true visual treat. This year’s display starts on March 16 and runs through April 7.

3. San Diego Padres. The Padres kick off their baseball season each spring in San Diego, and guests can benefit greatly by choosing to attend one of the early games. The Padres play in PETCO Ballpark in downtown San Diego. Guests who visit during the spring can see the team as it comes together, getting a great sense of the season to come. Game dates and times vary, and the season starts in April and runs throughout the summer and into the early fall. The 2013 season opens on April 9 against the Dodgers.

4. Old Town Fiesta Cinco de Mayo. The Latin holiday of Cinco de Mayo is a crucial part of the culture in San Diego. To best celebrate this exciting day, guests can attend the annual celebration in San Diego’s Old Town State Historic Park on May 4 and 5. To commemorate the holiday, the fiesta features authentic Mexican food, dancers and music. There are even historical reenactments to help people of all ages understand the importance of this spectacular Latin holiday. Guests can also experience more Mexican culture by visiting the nearby Bazaar del Mundo Shops, which also feature special events and displays for Cinco de Mayo.

5. Annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival. Avocados may not be the first thing people associate with spring, but this unique plant has a special place in nearby Fallbrook. Fallbrook, which is located north of San Diego, is known as the avocado capital of the world. The town takes this distinction seriously and puts on a yearly festival to honor their most famous produce. In addition to many unique dishes featuring avocado, there are also arts, crafts and other activities during this one-day festival. The 2013 festival is on April 21.

6. St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Every year, San Diego honors the Irish in everyone with a buoyant parade and festival. The parade kicks off the festivities, starting near Balboa Park and extending through the city. After the parade, guests can enjoy food, beer gardens, live performances and more. This year’s parade is on March 16. Then, the next day, guests over the age of 21 can move on down to the Gaslamp Quarter, which transforms itself for a rocking night of music, drinks and dancing with ShamROCK.

7. The Coronado Flower Show. Located in nearby Coronado, this annual flower show is a springtime must. The show is centered at Spreckels Park, and flower displays are set up under tents all around the gazebo. The displays are so numerous that this annual event is one of the largest flower shows in the country. In addition to the bountiful displays, guests can purchase flowers, talk to the designers, enjoy fresh food and listen to live music. The 2013 show is on April 20 and 21.

8. Spring Busker Festival. Spring is about new life, and there is no better way to feel alive than attending the distinctive Spring Busker Festival. Located in San Diego’s Seaport Village, the Spring Busker Festival is a venue for street performers to wow guests with the best and latest tricks. Some of the performances include juggling, sword swallowing, Didgeridoo and other stunts. All of this makes the Spring Busker Festival an experience that is hard to replicate at any time of the year. Check it out this year on March 23 and 24.

9. Flower Fields of Carlsbad. There is nothing more quintessential in the spring than fresh flowers, which is why the Flower Fields of Carlsbad are so popular. The display runs from March through May, depending on the weather, and features over 50 acres of vibrant blooms. The display has ornate gardens and unusual mazes, offering a tantalizing distraction for all visitors. The Flower Fields of Carlsbad also host 50 All American Rose Selection winners, ensuring that guests will certainly see the very best flowers San Diego has to offer.

10. Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Starting in March, this concert series is an inviting option for music lovers. All performances are in the evening on Shelter Island. Guests are sure to enjoy the outdoor theater, which can seat up to 1,400. The performances will vary including selections of jazz, blues, rock and more. There are even hysterical comedic performances and other special guests during this ongoing event. Performances run throughout the spring and summer, ending in October.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like for a painting to come to life? Perhaps you would enjoy

Have you ever imagined what it would be like for a painting to come to life? Perhaps you would enjoy talking with the Mona Lisa or watching a Degas ballerina dance gracefully on stage. This year Addison and I participated in Art Alive for the second time and helped transform oil and canvas into real people.Hosted by the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, Art Alive is an event where you become the painting. School groups, art classes, or even individuals (like me) can choose a painting to recreate using costumes, backdrops, and props. The tableaus are set up on the gallery’s lawn for the public and judges to view and vote on. Many different awards and cash prizes are given at the ceremony at the end of the event. However, it takes months of preparation to be ready for the big day.

Addie and I started working on our Art Alive tableaus in January. Our art teacher, Mrs. Bossert, was the one who introduced us to Art Alive and helped prepare for the event. Addison teamed up with her friend Katie again. Together they chose to do Harmony in Green which is one of Claude Monet’s famous water-lily paintings.

Addie’s painting – Harmony in Green

Last year I did a painting by Charles Sprague Pearce that I really connected with. Unfortunately, I never really used the costume that I worked so hard on again.

The Woodcutter’s Daughter by Charles Sprague Pearce

This year I decided to do a Civil War painting because, A: I love the Civil War era, and B: I wanted to be able to reuse the dress in reenacting. The painting I picked was called The Initials and was created by 19th century artist Winslow Homer who was famous for his Civil War illustrations and battlefield paintings. The Initials shows the civilian side of war by depicting a lone girl leaning against a tree carved with (presumably) a loved one’s initials.

The Initials – My 2012 Painting Choice

This year Mrs. Bossert helped us brainstorm what painting we wanted to use and how to execute it. Then she guided us in how to paint our backdrops. My dad built my backdrop frame (thanks Dad!) and I sewed the dress.

After months of working hard on our tableaus we arrived at the Albright Knox only to be told the event was cancelled becuase it was raining and windy. We came back the next weekend on a day that was still soggy and wet, but less windy and began setting up our tableaus.

If you’ve never been to the San Diego Museum of Art for their yearly event, Art Alive, this is

If you’ve never been to the San Diego Museum of Art for their yearly event, Art Alive, this is the year you should participate. The San Diego Museum of Art challenges floral designers to make the artistic masterpieces housed in their museum come alive through their floral interpretations. This four day event, beginning April 12 and ending on April 15, will fill the museum with thousands of flowers and, hopefully, thousands of visitors. The pictures in this blog post are examples of what you can expect to see at Art Alive.

Floral designers of all levels, from amateur to professional, gather at the museum to create floral sculptures that mimic famous pieces of art. The sculptures of flower arrangements depict images painted on canvas, from portraits to landscapes. Throughout the four day-long festivities, these living floral arrangements will be placed beside the famous pieces of art they are interpreting.

The four day-long event will be packed with activities. The event begins with an opening celebration on April 12 and includes a dinner for guests and a sneak peek at the Art Alive floral designs with their painted counterparts. The exhibition is open to the public beginning April 13.

I appreciate the combining of the two creative venues and how they compliment each other. Things can be interpreted so many different ways by each viewer.
The old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is pretty true…

Celebrating its 30th year, Art Alive is the Museum’s preeminent fundraiser and one of the longest running and most widely attended events of its kind in the United States. The unique exhibition of floral arrangements is created by more than 100 floral designers who take inspiration from the Museum’s renowned collection. The result is an awe-inspiring experience that should not be missed!

During this special time, the Museum is transformed into a glorious spectacle of art and flowers, creating an enchanting spring exhibition punctuated by a host of special events. This year’s celebration honors the artists, designers and the many people who have participated over the past 30 years of Art Alive. We are excited to welcome back René van Rems as this year’s Rotunda Designer. (photo of the 2010 Rotunda)

As the Museum’s signature fundraiser and a San Diego tradition, Art Alive provides critical financial support for the preservation, presentation and interpretation of the permanent collection.

The San Diego Art Museum opened it’s 28th Annual Art Alive exhibition today, a display of floral arrangements inspired by great works of art. Starting today and running through the weekend. At 6 p.m. they’ll be opening the doors for Flowers after Hours, a cocktail party for anyone who wants an early look at the exhibit.

I had a chance to check out the exhibit yesterday at the special viewing for members and press, and it was pretty cool. The arrangements are paired with the paintings they represent. The best of them capture the tone and mood of the original painting, preferably with a passing resemblance to the painting itself. The displays are scattered throughout the museum, including representations from old masters like El Greco to abstractions to Eastern art work. The only place where there were no flowers was the excellent Richard Avedon exhibit, which is probably for the best.

Tonight’s Cocktails and Culture party features a trunk show, champagne and appetizers for $35 (non-members price). The exhibit will be up Saturday and Sunday too, for $15. It’s worth it if art is your thing. But after Sunday, that’s it. Flowers aren’t forever, after all.
