Most of the time, I prefer to keep quiet about my sources of knowledge, so they are not exploited am

Most of the time, I prefer to keep quiet about my sources of knowledge, so they are not exploited amongst the people I know, and the exclusivity I had with it amongst my friends and colleagues is lost, lost in a similar way in which I now feel about my iPhone, great when I got it, because virtually no one else had one, but now every second person has one. This however is one of the times where I am going to share a list of websites which I frequent visit (most of them stuffed in the bookmarks of my Safari web browser) and some of my influences for wanting to go into the design field. Not all of them are design related, but they do offer a wide range of topics (I say wide range, but it is probably quite limited) which will help with design work.

Design Sojourn I found this site a few years ago and it provides some of the most comprehensive information available to those who are studying and aspiring to become a designer. Simple and easy to navigate, it has articles on which, I will read again and again, giving confidence and a different insight into what we are told at University about the highs and lows of becoming a designer, and the ideal ways to approach your task.

Laws of Simplicity Name of the website says it all I think.

Vitra Producer of some of the most iconic pieces of designs from different designers around the world, past and present. I first became aware of this company whilst in my final year at school, where, for the Product Design course we had to do personal research about a certain designer. My designer being Verner Panton. Worth a look just for the designs.

Engadget A technology website providing news and reviews about pretty much all things tech. Known about this site for a good number of years, and I used to listen to their podcast. Sometimes, product concepts are shown and new and intriguing materials, technologies and products are posted and can be incredibly useful, such as the mouldable mouse.

Red Dot Design Awards Similar to the Vitra site, but not manufacturers, instead an award site which shows some of the best designs of the past year.

Art Lebedev Russian company which I accidentally stumbled across a few years ago. Designers and producers of some of the most distinctive and quirky products I have ever seen. Note the Optimus Maximus keyboard which has a small LCD screen on each key, and the Defendius, a door chain in the shape of a maze, which I wasn’t too happy to see, because only a matter of days before it appeared on the website, I was sure I had created a product very similar to it.

Bang & Olufsen Danish company, who I absolutely adore, I just go to their website in order to just ogle at their products. Beautiful, just beautiful. You will have seen some of their products before, but just not known who produced it.

Moving onto the actual designers who caused me to purse a career in design is probably just as varied. In part, because most of the ones on the list are car designers but the few which are traditional, (if I can say that) product designers.

Ian Callum Probably my favourite designer of all time, he has created some of the most iconic pieces of automotive artworks ever produced, or as a designer at Volvo told me once, rolling sculptures.

Alec Issigonis Most famous for designing the original mini, managing to combine great aesthetics with great and innovative layout and manufacture. He is one of the people that many designers aspire to.

Jonathan Ive Apple designer, who in part, along with the return of Steve Jobs to the company, helped to turn around their fortunes. World renowned and incredibly popular. I’m also an Apple user so that does sort of sway the favourable bar.

There are 2 other reasons why I wanted to go into design, the first being that I like to draw, quite alot, and the second reason being that I do want to help people, but not in a directly obvious way such as a doctor. I like to keep behind the scenes and let my work do the talking.

I got sent a link to this page earlier this week (thanks Tim ) which showcases some funky designs of various items ranging from mugs, to hoodies, and to keyboards. Most of the product can be purchased from the site, but some are still in concept stages, which makes for some very interesting browsing.

Anyway, to get to the meat of it, there are 2 keyboards which are just full of awesomeness. The first is called the Optimus Maximus (I think because it has a butt-load of optimal awesomeness). The trick? Each key on this baby has a standalone OLED screen, to display the function associated to it. Yes, you read correctly. The keys are completely customisable using the bundled software, which allows complete flexibility in what applications you use the keyboard for, and indeed in which languages. You can purchase this one for around $1600 or so…

The second keyboard, which is even cooler I think, is called the Optimus Tactus (I think because there is no tactful way to tell your friends you have one, without them beating you senseless to get their greasy little fingers on it…). This keyboard is still in the concept phase, but the idea is to remove the restriction of fixed, physical keys. It is a “one sensor display keyboard”. (I’m thinking a big-ass iPhone-style screen, without all the irritating phone functions). To quote:

Optimus Tactus does not have physical keys, which means there are no restrictions on their shape and size.
…
Any part of the keyboard surface can be programmed to perform any function or to display any images.

So, who wants one? Go check our the Art Lebedev Studio site for some more awesome stuff. And be sure to check out the other Optimus keyboards while you’re in the neighbourhood.

[dieter]

There aren’t enough USB ports on your computer to fit all of your gadgets and gizmos. USB hubs come in all shapes, sizes and colors, but ultimately people want something that works well and looks good. It’s that simple. I’ve had a few hubs. They were all cheap looking affairs that didn’t last long. That’s why I really like Art Lebedev’s new hub. It’s looks really great and reminds me of Pink Floyd.

We can only imagine that at least a few staffers over at Art Lebedev Studios get paid to do nothing but conjure up ideas, because this one is just marvelous. And marvelously simple, but that’s beside the point. The Luxofor traffic light concept improves upon a nearly archaic design that still relies on spherical fixtures when there’s really no need. Lebedev’s team asserts that using square lights backed with bright laser diodes would make better use of the available space and provide a more noticeable signal to drowsy motorists. The roar of “why didn’t I think of that?” being simultaneously stated is downright deafening.

Art Lebedev first shot to worldwide fame with their concept of the OLED keyboard, with the premise of being able to programme every single key to your hearts content. They have been able to keep up with the level of innovation and have now come up with an interesting concept for traffic lights and zebra crossings. These to me seem really functional and just simply make sense, which is what traffic-furniture needs to do. I am loving the sharp lines and really chic led lighting.

I suppose it’s time to start thinking about Christmas again. Every year I get further and further from the magic of youth, I’m able to more clearly assess the meaning of the season, which, for me, sort of just means getting in touch with my pagan roots. I think I’d feel slightly more attached with these camo Christmas ornaments, designed by Alexander Malinovsky for Art Lebedev. I would have enjoyed seeing a desert print, which would get far less lost in your tree, but I like to think the designer enjoyed the ironic gesture.

Waarom is Touchscreen ooit bedacht?
