Vi lá no blog do Bruno Moreschi que apesar do volume mais recente do “Art Now” da editora Taschen ainda não ter chegado às livrarias daqui já há uma versão online no site da editora. O prefácio do catálogo que reúne 133 nomes anuncia que o livro não pretende ser um apanhado dos “melhores” artistas da atualidade, mas o dos mais “relevantes”. Um dos editores do catálogo, Hans Werner Holzwarth, aponta como características marcantes da arte produzida hoje o ressurgimento de uma pintura abstrata experimental, a polivalência dos artistas no uso de diferentes mídias e a coexistência nos trabalhos de modelos emprestados da cultura popular e da história da arte. Entre os artistas que aparecem no catálogo, estão os brasileiros Marepe, Beatriz Milhazes e Ernesto Neto. Abaixo, alguns dos favoritos deste blog. As aspas são reproduzidas do “Art Now”.

Mitt i Stockholm har finansmannen och miljardären Gerad De Geer en en hemlig konstkammare dit få hittar. Just nu bjuds på en utställning med Olafur Eliasson.

Gerad De Geer blev mycket förmögen i efterdyningarna av Sovjetunionens fall. Idag bor han i Thailand och på herrgården Hanaskog. Idag är det en ny tillväxtmarknad som ska erövras, Kina.

Delar av förmögenheten har gått till konst, och den hemliga konsthallen i Stockholm, Jarla partilager. Det sades att bara en liten utvald skara hade tillträde och att man hade förbjudit journalister att skriva. Det tycks ligga i tiden att öppna en egen konsthall i fall man har råd. De Geer är intressant eftersom han av Sothebys räknas till de ytterst få svenska konstsamlarna av internationell rang.

Men Jarla partilager är inte så värst hemliga, man måste bara ringa och boka en tid innan man kommer. Konsthallen ligger på Karlavägen 9 och har en bra hemsida. För tillfället visas Olafur Eliassons utställning “Winter solstice, Equinox, Summer solstice” tom 15 juli. Därefter kommer en utställning med Yang Fudong i höst.

En av Jessica Joslins udda skulpturer

Jessica Joslin är en amerikansk konstnär som sedan 1992 ägnar sig åt att göra de här surrealistiska skulpturerna. Skulpturerna påminner lite om gamla tiders kuriosakabinett. Joslin dammsuger antikaffärer och loppmarknader på delar att använda. Hon använder sig allt möjligt som gamla instrument, läder och sammet som hon sedan fogar samman med skelett från smådjur. En del är bara några centimeter medan andra kan vara meterhöga.

Tidigare i år kom boken “Jessica Joslin: Strange Nature” ut via hennes gallerist Lisa Sette, som också ordnar utställningar med jämna mellanrum. Everyone has seen all the ridiculous Visa commercials with their latest ad campaign of “Life Takes Visa” but what most people don’t know is that Visa also hit the streets with actual artists to reach a broader audience outside of tube viewers. So in searching for art in advertisement, or was it advertisement in art (it’s so hard to tell these days which way it goes since lately they’ve been going hand in hand) I stumbled upon this mural in Greenwich Village by Trish Grantham endorsing… or sponsored by Visa claiming, “Life Takes Expression.”

Clearly, it’s a piece of art, as Trish Grantham is a ‘whimsical contemporary artist’ from Portland Oregon who was commissioned by Visa to paint a mural in New York. Aside from that however, what more can be said of it? There is the “Life Takes Visa” message clearly and boldly displayed but does the mural have anything at all to do with Visa? and why exactly are they (Visa) targeting an audience in the Village? What kind of consumer base even exists there? To the marketing folks over at Visa, stick to the choreographed videos set to synthesized music because it looks like they must have not known where Greenwich Village was, or who resides there, because they definitely goofed on a proforma somewhere.

I took my brochure from class and copied exactly what I had written when we were listening to Jim O’Rourke’s “and I’m singing” in class here. When I was done I realized that i had written my own narrative of terrible lyrics. I don’t know what O’Rourke had in mind when he composed/created this compilation of sounds but I do know that what I took away from it is something completely unique to me. Being a fan of instrumental music, I guess I am used to coming up with my own stories for music that I hear… while listening and jotting things down I could see the exact pictures in my head of where I would be and what I would be doing, it was my own soundtrack for a journey to NY. At one point, there is a period of additions – where O’Rourke starts with one simple sequence of sounds and keeps building on it, most definitely reminding me of somewhere like Penn Station, where there are so many people just is coming in from different places all going somewhere, always more and more people.  I remember turning to Edyta after listening during class and saying that it hadn’t even felt like eight minutes had gone by. I couldn’t have imagined that I would have been able to get lost in the music like that — but there was something about it that I was able to connect with.

what conceptual art is : art in which the concept or idea involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns.

“If I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art. At this point art became more of an activity and less of a product.”

The debate continues. Toe to toe artists and critics step up to that fine line that defines what is art and what isn’t. Is there even a line there anymore? Who can say really what art is, there are so many different forms of it, it truly is in the eye of the beholder and what each individual personally considers art.

Today, conceptual art seems to be the rage, as more artists, musicians and film makers are popping up under this category more and more than ever before. Anyone who picks up a video camera or a paint brush with a mission and a message becomes a conceptual artist, and with the venues available today to reach a mass audience, everyone’s a conceptual artist.

Bruce Nauman is once such artist.

Having embraced the contemporary atmosphere of art, his exhibits and videos culminate into a brilliant (or depending on your perspective just a waste of space) display of …. art. The following is one such example of his conceptual video… or is it just a man walking in a square wasting 10 minutes of his life? you be the judge.

Another example of his art that doesn’t involve video is below. I just find it particulary interesting how someone can come up with stuff like this and how other people can consider it … art. Where exactly is the beauty and uniqueness? This truly is conceptual in nature.

I’m not a huge fan of music videos, I never was. I am a fan however, of Apocalyptica and their adaptations of some heavy metal music into much more classical sounding tunes. For instance, in this video, the group of four cellos plays Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”. It is interesting to hear a completely instrumental version of a song you have heard that has lyrics from heavy metal be completely instrumental. With the scenes that are used in the music video, you have to use your imagination in trying to connect what the band has interpreted the song to be, with the additions through different parts it had divided the music into among the four cellos, and if you know the lyrics, to try and follow the story.

Just reading the lyrics before or while you’re watching the video changes your perspective and really challenges you to try and see what the group had felt about Metallica’s original.

Through Burning Chrome, written by William Gibson and The Futurist Manifesto by F.T. Marinetti, it seems most think the future will be dangerous, or involve danger in some way shape or form. For Automatic Jack and Bobby Quine the cowboy, their lives revolve around danger and the illegality of hacking and manipulating programs that would end in certain death if they were caught. Their objective? To pull the biggest business off of Cyberspace, “Chrome” they call her, and retire having succeeded with this one last job. Their inspiration? A girl called Rikki, whose questionable dealings with the two hackers can only be accounted for as someone trying to get ahead in the world doing whatever it is that needs to be done to get there. Is this what the future holds? Having no sense of pride or dignity in doing “whatever it takes” in order to get ahead? Her devil may care attitude certainly rewards her, we think, in the end as she heads off leaving Bobby and Jack with their stolen goods. To F.T. Marinetti, the future will only be what you want it to be. And he wants it to be something of a dangerous nature.

MANIFESTO OF FUTURISM

1. We want to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and rashness

Speed and irresponsibility go hand and hand here with danger, as the similarity of opinions is evident to Gibson’s “whatever it takes/stop at nothing to get where you want to be” kind of attitude. Marinetti points out, what is the point in looking back? I recall seeing something once that said “The past is over and done with, you can’t change it, so what’s the point in looking back?” I have to disagree here with not only that statement but also Marinetti’s sentiments. Many great and wonderful things have happened in the past, and if we don’t look to it to learn and use it for the future, what kind of future will we have? One that is dangerous such as those laid out by Gibson and Marinetti? Or one that is better and more knowledgeable having learned from the past? Marinetti expects challenges, in fact, welcomes them and ushers them in from the future. Trying to embrace the many new and wonderful things he hopes will happen which don’t involve the rudimentary life style we currently adhere to by visiting those crummy museums and universities!

Once you are in it, there is no limit.

Reminds of some difficult problems I have had to face as a student. Calculus! What did you expect? The tending to infinity thing. x tries to become the sleeping 8. Does it ever get there? I don’t know, perhaps it’s still getting there – apparently the same problems are being given out to kids in school even today.

That’s abstraction for you. On a long indeterminate line, the expression continues.

I wasn’t not blogging all this while. I was just blogging elsewhere. Abstracting. Tending towards infinity. The ultimate expression where meaning is your own. The “meaning Nirvana”. Where, perhaps, even meaning doesn’t make meaning. At least, words don’t make meaning.

It is a frantic call for primitive and instinctive intelligence to make us aware of meaning. Words limit our meaning; words aren’t like the x that tries to become the sleeping 8. Words have limits. They can go far on the indeterminate line – but nowhere close to infinity.

That is, perhaps, also, the Problem of the Strange Solution.

Yes, i have to confess – spammed with invites for next next art show to open soon I was losing my interest in art in SL the more and more. But the nice thing with art is: the less you expect it, the more it surprises you!

And of course – just walking by this piece of art just struck me – its just soo damm cool to see it in SL!

At least some good news: Nebulosus Severine found her way back to SL!

Now she surprises the art scene with leaving the Art & Artists! Network, SL most influential Art group founded by her.

What ever Neb now is up to – it won’t be boring!

I even thought I have seen a ghost when I had a preview to the new place she is setting up!

Shock hit the artist community when rumours spread that Nebulosus Severine had left SL – for indefinite time! The founder of SL most active art group has left SL after a fierce dispute over the organization of the up coming Burning Life event. In the verge of further disneyfication of SL, the organizers of the BL 2007 even cencored a sculpter. Neb was in the midst of the the protests. Further discussions with the BL organizers (it is well know that things dont go on well this time) lead to the creation of a very “Nebulosus” like piece of protest art – she simply burned the head of BL, Vic, symbolicly. Vic wasnt amused, and as LL came into the game everyone thought Neb had been banned because of violation of LL’s TOS. As you can see first candles and flowers have been devoted to her self portrait.

And now the good news: As her friends confirm, Neb is neither burned out nor has her account been terminated – she simply faces “normal” SL account problems hopefully to be resolved during the next days. Therefore, keep your eyes open for the next kind of “Nebulosus” art action!

OMG – these Texas crowd knows how to make a party rock!

Dozens of art invitations, but only the “Demolition Party” really allured me. They do art, but Texas style. Their art sim didn’t worked the way they liked – guess what they did? Right – they blew it up – down to ground. Very good art – “creative destruction” style… naive lil Mura had nooo idea what they really where up to!

When party started – 6:30 pm PDT sharply – mysterious SL Holo bug designs hit me again. Harsh style switch from “army babe outfit” to been covered in the design of the invitation card, I felt really pissed.

All friends had a good laugh! 30 sec later a massage appeared “sim will restart in 2 min” – so I left my friends and tp to the party – just because it was the next tp I had in reach. Guess what? Nothing! At party, nobody was. trying to tp back – no way.

All friends disappeared from friends list or didn’t get my IM’s. SL was completely on restarting and I felt like its only resident being stuck and lost – enough time for nice modelling photo shooting as my dress matched perfectly with the place. I fact, I felt bad – I was sooo much dressed to impress – nobody could oversee how perfectly my outfit matched the place – but there was nobody to see it.

Finally IM’s got through, I managed to tp home just to see the demolition the Texas artist had promised: Impressing. At home – all furniture had gone. I went out…

after falling down several 100’s meters, I saw the demolition promised: most houses gone – you won’t believe what our kind neighbours have in their homes! Won’t tell you who had this St Andreas Cross – and about the other toys

Only one obstacle I had to overcome: I can’t make any art. You understand? It’s a bit tricky to have no art at all and wanting to seel it outrageously expencive.

Didn’t you get it? My proplem is not the high prices I will charge. My problem is that I simply have no ART at all to sell very expencive.

Don’t worry: Mura always finds a solution. I simply invented ART! A new form of it – very easy, everybody can do so )

KArt – thats my new, radical, creative form of ART. It’s a SL thing, you must know – in RL I never would be able to make any ART at all!

So, now I had found this great new ART Style – KArt! Again, a problem showed up. What to do with this new ART style?

It is not enough just to have a new ART style. I can’t go to you saying: “Hi, its me, Mura – I have a new ART style – now give me your money, pleaaaze!”

I have to do something with it.

Don’t worry – Mura always is great in having great ideas!

I doent invent anymore! Come on – inventing a completly new form af ART – isn’t it already enough for this month? So, I decided to use KArt on the things I do anyhow: falling inlove hoplessly, stalking around, again falling in love, falling in love again still beeing in other love, playing with emotions of someone just to find out I again have fallen in love …. you know, simply the normal course of life.
