Good Day everyone! BAD! Kitty here, I know it’s been a while. I have been very busy though so a quick (maybe not so quick actually, because it’s been awhile) update on what’s what.

The new “eBay clear the studio out” project is going along pretty well. I’ve been running weekly art auctions for three weeks now and it’s starting to look up. I’ve decided to post my progress here for anyone that maybe interested in the day by day stuff that goes into a sales campaign like this. Being that this is most certainly not my first rodeo, I thought it might be good to share information. It’s takes at least 6-8 weeks to test market a sales idea for any product, in fact most big scale companies use the 6-8 month strategy. So, I am at week three, improving my auction placement strategy and appearances, blogging, cross-promoting and advertising. Yes it’s a lot of work. So far I’ve had one sale. Not bad.

I figure to clean out the studio of basically 150 paintings, that have come home from shows, galleries and my own heavy production cycles (I paint A LOT, like 4-5 paintings a month). It will take this entire year of weekly art auctions, and all the promoting I can fit in, to clear them out of the studio. In order to do this I am going to at first lose money. Yup, that’s right, lose money. See its like this…to sell art on eBay, every artist has to pretty much check your ego at the door first. The first auctions are to get seen, find your groove, develop your now- in- the-present voice, and start making sales. They have to be target priced to get seen and build that ever important feedback score. So you have to start with low opening bids (now I am doing whole sale cost) which for me is the wholesale cost of the items to create the art itself. Basically I get no payment for the creation at that price it’s just a break even cost of supplies. That number for me, seems to be around 50.00 -100.00 USD. Yes this is not ideal in marketing your art, duh. The thing is it time that you are paying for. Every artist on eBay that sells art regularly and is popular has been at it for a long time. They got to that place using a bunch of different and good market strategies. This is mine.

I have so much accumulated unsold, homeless art, that I can afford to sell this way to get the party started. Does it devalue my work in the overall market place? Nope. Well I am now unrepresented by any gallery, so I can do what ever I want in that way. (not that I’ve ever done anything any other way than my own, er, I am the BAD! Kitty) To be honest the high-priced, gallery representation gig isn’t my thing. I honestly and truly am over it. I don’t think it’s for me, too complicated. 

I am  very simple person, with very simple needs and pleasures. I like to create art. I like to write and read and sell art. I don’t really care about all the rest of it. These things make it possible for me to continue to create and live fully. I have o create, I don’t have a choice, it’s almost a compulsion and most certainly a therapy/release thing, a part of who I am. So, if I make enough money in the process to buy new supplies and keep feeding myself new information to process and inspire than great! I have a day job. I don’t make a living off of my artwork anymore, I do however make enough for supplies and study=learning new skills for expression. That works for me. If I don’t give-up and give-in to the grind of eBay or any other marketing strategy then I doomed to running out of money for continuation of my addiction to art supplies. That can’t happen, perish the thought! I will make more money than I need to cover supplies, eventually, I’m good at what I do and I then make profit. Cool Beans I can live with that.

Two years ago when the market went to hell in a hand basket, I was selling art at a fine market price every week, making money and a living. That has ended. It’s over, and I’ve had to face that and get a good paying day job. OKay, so I did that, we must eat you know art staples don’t taste all that good. So after lots of soul-searching, I’ve decided to try a different tack.

I am re-vamping BAD! Kitty Art Studio. I am lowering costs, cutting overhead, changing my marketing and kick-start a new year. Screw it, what do I have to lose? because this current state of events is soooo not working for me. The web site will get a makeover this week, and prices will be cut, to a cost + labor level.  I will continue the liquidation/sell off with the weekly auctions for one year and re-evaluate then. I will post to you all my progress and chart how long it takes to get to center of the eBay lollipop. I will continue without fanfare about the business of creating and moving forward. When times and circumstances change, I will be ready to do so as well. Bend like the reed, or whatever.

I’m re-reading the series at the moment and one character always strikes my imaginary muse…Zoltan the giant mutant raven. So here is my version of Zoltan…as he puts the moon to bed for another day. So, I of course needed to paint a blue tree, I’ve never painted an all blue tree before so it’s a good thing. I never in a million years would have thought that a quote from the Evil Adolph, would inspire me to create, but here it is. Just goes to show that you don’t know, what you don’t know.

Then I read this quote:

and I knew I was on the right path. Being in the studio and working like I do is an active act of rebellion! I will work my day job and do my very best to be my personal best at it, but art is my life. It is my talisman, my touchstone. It is my life line in a dark world. So…take that (BAM!) social standards, I am the BAD! Kitty and I have a mighty rebel yell, oh yeah, and I’m not afraid to use it.

I think a blue tree is just what I needed to take the edge off this sepia tinted reality. The lighter shades you see on the tree is really silver not white, it’s sparkly but only a little bit, not too much. My ability to take pictures of my work is not as good as my skills at creating the art itself.  Such is life, and that means that all my patrons say the same thing when they get their new art…”It’s so much BETTER in person!” yes, that’s because I suck at picture taking. Sheesh.

 I only paint trees when I am thinking about something internally, really hard. I don’t know why this is true, it just is. This tree is representational of my inner conversations with my soul.  The world I was born into, well it wasn’t that into me, you know….so, being that I am who and what I am….

I just created my own world, instead. Put that in your little red wagon. My work is not about solving problems or answering big questions or being the smartest or the most perfect….it’s about the moment, it IS the big questions, it is also my revelations and rebellions. Maybe that will mean something to you too, and if so, that’s just wonderful. Hello kindred soul, nice to meet you. If it means nothing to you, that’s no skin off my back. I refuse to continue to treat my art business as just a money- making enterprise. It is my life’s work, if it resonates with you (or maybe just matches your decor) take out your wallet and buy it. I am letting go of making money, I am embracing my real self, and that person may not sell a lot of art, maybe she will, who knows? I don’t care any more; my intellectual freedom and talents are not up for sale, just the artworks that will come from that magical place. If I make money, great, if I don’t, it does not mean I am not a successful artist, it means my kids will make a ton of cash when I am dead.

I feel so much better, letting this years sales and numbers go…I feel free again, I feel like me again. I paint because I have too. it’s just that simple. If you like it, I have made it super easy to own original art, so… I guess if you like what you see…just do it.

Hello everyone,

this is my newest work, completed for the Artist Challenge “Sun for CBS Morning Show” It’s my version of the sun, in all it’s intense, messy glory. The background is a black/blue over turquoise and marbled to look alive and vibrant, not a flat black.

The sun itself is 5 colors of red from rust, o fire engine and orange and three shades of yellows. Laid in over each other in layers, the colors shine and meld together in a very excited manner. As it should be, we are talking about the surface of our sun, after all.

I had a lot of fun working on this one, I think that shows through, my joy in being able to do what I was put here to do…paint!

This work is now a part of the CBS News Sunday Morning Shows Library! Yippeee for me! I can’t wait for it to be shown on TV as part of the show.

I have two paintings that are giving me fits. Both are UNfinished, so hold onto your knickers there for a minute… I can not decide if I should scrap them both or finish them, I have lost my way. So, I thought what the heck, I’ll show them to my valuable readers and friends and get some second thoughts on them. So, are you ready to look at some art that is not finished and give me your thoughts on them? I hope so, because that’s what we are doing today…on with the almost done art show.

1st up is a small study I am doing on canvas board, in oils…it is a new thing I am trying out…drawn collage. I look at lots of pictures of stuff, gather up a bunch of images that I like looking at together, and them draw those unrelated images down and then paint it in and together. I don’t know what else to do with this one, I feel that the images are not coming together like I thought they would and now I am stuck. I don’t know if I should even bother with finishing it, because I can’t come up with an understanding of the story it’s trying to tell me. BTW, I am a process painter, it all happens without too much direction from me, I let the work take the lead. Just FYI… that’s why I can get lost in my own work and not know what to do, because I have no plan most of the time…fun right? Anyway… It’s titled: “Her name was Lilly” Tell me what you think, really I mean it…here you go…

2nd painting is something I have been working on for at least three months. I got to this point in the painting, and have not finished it. I am stuck on if anyone even wants to see this work or not, is it worth finishing, is it too far out in left field, is it insulting too many or not enough? Is it even any good? So there it is…my plead for creative help for my paintings that I have been working on. I hate getting stuck, it happens, it’s part of the whole process, I know…but I still hate it. So, if you’ve got something to share, please for the love of all that is Holy, share.

I have thick skin so don’t worry about hurting my feelings, otherwise I wouldn’t put it out in the world like this, right? I would show them to friends and family and go that route…I want this feedback from those who know me and those that don’t. Now don’t go being an ass, I’ll boot you for being outrageous or extra mean. So, by all means…look, think and discuss…it’s all good.

It’s been a busy week so far, with my intuitive coaching picking up new clients left and right. I am working my fanny off…it’s all good, I like my job, but I still need to paint every single day. Art is my life, intuitive coaching is a real talent, and it helps people, makes money for my family and that all makes me feel good, but… it’s not art. Art makes me feel alive!!!! So, it’s good to pay the bills, but I want to pay the Universe for gifting me with this talent that inspires the fires of passion to burn inside of me. Ahhh the life of a painter…it’s sooo glam yes? *smirks*

While spending all my internal thinking time about the nature and reality of my current life and the
world that seems to be crashing down around my ears…again, I have found a sort of peaceful
anxiety or pressure inside my creative world. It seems that if I am so preoccupied with the crazy
world outside my studio door, the easier it is for me to completely give myself over to moments of
addictive creation. This work happened by it’s self. I needed to sort the conflicting drama of what
we have to do too survive the coming year into something tangible. I found that I don’t fear the
weathering of storms and much as I dread the loss of  convenience, I know I can get through and
past that “base” human selfish, addicted  thinking. Difficulty first battles in the mind, then on the
field of reality. Even the chaotic can be strangely beautiful.

I really like this work. I discovered something new about my fears, running towards them makes my
life bigger, not smaller. I learned something new and I want some more…please.  
 :)

I have not imported it into the web site yet, but I will. The next couple of days, we as a family are taking off. We all have a few days and we are going to enjoy and ease into the New Year quietly. I am working on a new project, filming myself painting…OK, it’s harder than it looks. Oh boy. Our boys and Mate Man are going to finish eating all the holiday foods, play football and video games and do my bidding when needed. We are just staying home, but it feels like a vacation because I get to take two whole days off from my day jobs. I get to play in studio, Yippeeee!

I have documented all the authors of the quotes on the painting, this time I didn’t write the names on the canvas, I could not figure out how to do it without it looking weird. So, I wrote all of it on the back of the painting  and I’ll give a copy printed out to the new owner too. ( when it finds it’s new owner) I’m really into text right now…well, a week ago I was, I’m now onto other things, but I have a few paintings waiting for final details that are from that 3 week love affair with words as art. It happens. I hope to finish them all and get to share with you all new work real soon. I have been working a lot, I have four works waiting, two new ones started and my Mom duty as well as having two income producing jobs. I am really looking forward to a New Year, just for the energy boost if nothing else.

I don’t really do prints of my work, there are I think six that are available on my Red Bubble site, but those are the rare few. I do one of a kind, original, not to be repeated art. You can own original art now, I have original fine art in every price range available on the site for every budget.

Right now in these times of economic crisis, I am fighting back. If we all took our money and only bought work/things/products/services from other Americans we would all do much better this year and in the ones to follow. Yes, you can go buy the filler stuff at Walmart, made in wherever is the cheapest labor that can be found, we all can and do at sometime or another. I am talking about those special bigger presents and gifts to self, why not make an investment in your future wealth and daily joy factor AND support a living American Artist? I promise every penny made will go the feeding, clothing, sheltering and continued growth of said artist and her family. In the almost 11 years of my full time career my artworks have increased in value (second market prices, it’s a economic indicator) by 400% +. I’m a good investment, better than wall street or gold and historically better than your home or your car. On the front page of my web site you will see a link to a great article about buying art online, maybe that will help some out there. And it’s cool if my art isn’t your cuppa tea…I know a ton of amazing artists, I mean the talent is staggering, they are all located in my blogroll to the right…if not my art then maybe one of them or whom ever resonates with you. Just check it out, most if not all of the artists are offering discounts or having sales so what have you got to lose?

Living artists are the seers of our generations. Support living artists so that the history, the real history of humanity can continue on as it has from the very beginning of human kind, and the wealth and joy can continue to grow amongst us all.

‘The New Moon Vine′

The background on this work is four layers of cobalt blue, alizarine
crimson, prussian blue, and a dusting of a old gold. The painting began
with two coats of heavy gesso, done in a wavy pattern. You can’t see it in
these pictures because it is subtle, but in real life it adds depth and
texture. The Moons are three glazes of white, brilliant blue and then
transparent earth orange.
The Fairy is glowing with the same colors of the moons. She also has black
leaves encrusted with fairy dust (fine glitter).
I had a lot of fun working on this painting and I hope that my joy shows
through.
