1) What is Copyright Agency|Viscopy?

Copyright Agency|Viscopy is a not for profit rights management organisation. We enable the use of text and images in return for fair payment to writers, visual artists and publishers. This includes managing the Viscopy business which delivers licensing services to artists and users of images.

2) What is the Resale Royalty?

The artists’ resale royalty scheme is relatively new legislation that sees artists receiving royalties on certain resales of their work. Since the start of the scheme on 9 June 2010 it has generated royalties totalling more than $870,000 from more than 4,500 resales, attributed to more than 440 artists
(over 60% of these are indigenous artists). While some royalties have been paid to the families of deceased artists, the majority have been paid to living artists – in fact, the youngest artist to receive a royalty was 21 years old.

A royalty is payable if:
• the seller purchased the work after 8 June 2010;
• the work resells for $1,000 or more (including GST);
• the resale was not a private sale from one individual to another;
• the artist is an Australian citizen or resident;
If the artist has died:
• it was less than 70 years ago; and
• there is a beneficiary or estate with a connection to Australia.

3) Who are you and what is your role?

My name is Tristan Chant and I’m the Visual Artist Manager at Copyright Agency|Viscopy. My role was developed to enhance services to our visual artist members and assist with the implementation of the resale royalty scheme. I am also the membership manager for Viscopy andthe transactional licensing schemes.

4) How are you different to other companies?

We offer centralised licensing services for visual artists – we can be a ‘one stop’ source of licences to enable others to use an artist’s work with their permission and in exchange for a fair payment for that use. We’re also not for profit which means that we only deduct our administration fees from the royalties and fees earned by our members, to cover the services we provide.

5) How do you think artists see royalties?

I think artists see royalties as a positive addition to their income from creating art.

6) How does an artist get royalties?

There are a number of ways artists can receive royalties. If you are a member of Viscopy, we act as your worldwide agent and licence your works on your behalf. This includes use in publications, catalogues, merchandise and online reproductions. Another way to receive royalties is through the statutory licences. Copyright Agency manages the Commonwealth Government’s statutory licences; these statutory licenses provide schools and government access to use content without needing individual copyright clearances and also provide fair payment to the rightsholders for those uses.

For Viscopy members, we can also collect statutory licence income from Screenrights for images that have been used in television broadcasts. We also have agreements in place with similar organisations around the world that enable the use of foreign text and images in Australia, and the collection of fees and royalties for the use of Australian works overseas. And finally, there’s potential royalty income through the artists’ resale royalty scheme which I’ve spoken about above.

7) When does an artist qualify to receive royalties?

There are a number of ways an artist’s work can attract royalties. Firstly – by having an eligible resale of your work through the artists’ resale royalty scheme.

Royalties and licence fees can also come about from transactional by Viscopy. Finally, if your work is picked up in a sample survey from our statutory licences.

8) Are there any limitations to receiving royalties for your work?

For the resale royalty scheme it is 5% of the sale price (less admin and GST costs) for works that meet the eligibility criteria. For statutory and transactional licensing it is based on the type and volume of usage and how your works been used – for educational purposes, for government or commercial use and suchlike.

9) Is signing up something we need to do now or in the future?

I would recommend all artists consider signing up to Copyright Agency|Viscopy and register for resale royalty payments. Membership is free and while there may not be an immediate payment for you this will help to streamline payments in the future. Membership of Viscopy will allow us to include your work in our repertoire so it can be licensed. We are also a great contact and referral point for industry related enquiries.

10) How does an artist register?

Registration for the resale royalty scheme can be found at http://www.resaleroyalty.org.au. For membership to Copyright Agency|Viscopy artists can head over http://www.viscopy.org.au. Both sites have online forms or downloadable PDF versions, they only take a few minutes to complete online.

11) What have you found out about artists when dealing with them?

Artists are a great group of professionals to work with, they are always eager to learn about developments that affect their industry and passionate about what they do for a living. It been great to see artists start to realise the value in their works beyond primary sales.

12) What funds do you run for artists and art professionals?

We run a fund called the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, which has two main areas of focus. Firstly, we have the Major Cultural Projects Fund. The priority for this fund is to support innovation in the Australian creative industries and to develop local and foreign markets for Australian works. Recent recipients of funding have included NAVA, Arts Law, Biennale of Sydney and 4A Gallery. A full list of projects funded is available here.

Secondly, we have the Creative Industries Career Fund. This fund supports individual Australian creators and those involved in the creative industries who wish to develop their skills and take their careers to the next level. Applicants can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to undertake training and other activities that will enhance their careers. Projects supported by the fund can be found here, and it’s a great indication of the diverse range of projects Australian creators are participating in. 13) What art do you have in the office?

We lease most of our works from Artbank. My favourite would have to be the Ginger Riley (Ngak Ngak) in the board room.

Conductors Project
Sydney’s newest public art initiative is launching on 21.09.12.

Utilising two display cabinets between the platforms at St. James Station

Platform72 is an ever changing art gallery and design store housing an eclectic mix of high quality artworks across all mediums and designer goods; specifically but not exclusive to homewares, jewellery and accessories. While Fashion Week was winding down at Lincoln Center Wednesday night, Diane von Furstenberg was sequestered on the 10th floor of a nondescript Lexington Avenue building. Across the giant storeroom of the mostly digital antique dealer 1stDibs, Patrick McMullan was snapping Bill Cunningham as he took a picture of a small watercolor on the wall. Nearby, Anderson Cooper hovered around his mother, who, in a stunning red kimono, greeted guests to her first solo art show since 2001.

While most people might associate Gloria Vanderbilt with her fashion prowess–her jeans commercials in the ’80s helped define a culture of denim, after all–she demurred at any questions about the fashion world that was teeming nearby. “My work involves all my time,” she told The Observer, referring to her current exhibition, “The World of Gloria Vanderbilt: Collages, Dream Boxes, and Recent Paintings.” With images that included a doll on a crucifix alongside bright, whimsical portraits of Angelina Jolie and Joyce Carol Oates, “The World” is open to the public starting today, and will be going till mid-October. Proceeds from donations will be going to the Huntsville Museum in Huntsville, Ala., where New York Magazine’s Wendy Goodman (also in attendance that evening) held a party for the release of her biography, The World of Gloria Vanderbilt.

“We wanted to do something nice for the Huntsville Museum in return for their warm hospitality,” she said. “And what better way than suggesting the opening of my show be a benefit for the museum?” She also praised 1stDibs founder and president Michael Bruno for his attention to detail while organizing the event.

Mr. Bruno was equally deferential. “Gloria has always been very forward-thinking,” he said of the 88-year-old heiress. “Ever since I went to her studios to see her paintings, I’ve been obsessed.”

And he had put his money where his mouth was, purchasing one of Ms. Vanderbilt’s paintings himself: a large, brightly colored piece called Tenacity that hung near the center of the room.

On the way out, The Observer ran into Joyce Carol Oates by the elevators. We inquired if the author had seen Ms. Vanderbilt’s painting of her.

She shot back, “You mean there’s only one?”

Whether it’s Blue Note record covers, Reggae LP covers, skateboard graphics, KAWS, ESPO, modern design or street photography, we are always looking for more. This current release can be filed under the “more” category. If you have ever been to Jamaica, you may have noticed these crazy dancehall signs everywhere. These signs fill public spaces and are part of Jamaican culture. The popular NYC Jamaican eatery Miss Lily’s (with an art space next door) has chosen this book as their first publishing venture. They couldn’t have picked a better subject. The enlisted Jamaican filmmaker Maxine Walters to dip into her personal collection for this book.

This book is a perfect example of every day Jamaican culture that some who live there don’t even realize exists. These signs are basically illegal, and like graffiti (that is buffed clean) there are periodic sweeps of removing dancehall signs and burning them. I can remember a book not related to music, but culture being published about ten years ago. Sensacional: Mexican Street Graphics told the story of streets signs in Mexico, and while it may not have the same meaning as signs alluring patrons to the dance hall, the DIY attitude is on a level playing ground. Jamaican Dancehall Signs From the Collection of Maxine Walters is a great addition to any lover of Reggae music, Dancehall culture, or Jamaica itself. An important communication vehicle to get people ‘pon de dance floor, IMHO this book’s a keeper. Dust a Sound Bwoy because this dance hall, is under fiyah.

“Jazz Band” – Pedro De La Cruz

1^st Thursday is an evening of art and culture in downtown Santa Barbara. On the first Thursday of each month, participating galleries and art-related venues offer free access to visual and performing art in a fun and social environment from 5-8pm. 1^st Thursday venues feature attractions, such as art openings, live music, artists’ receptions, lectures, wine tastings and hands-on activities. Many Downtown partners partake in this event including non-conventional galleries, retailers and restaurants. In addition, State Street comes alive on 1^stThursday with performances and interactive exhibits. Look for previews of forthcoming plays, symphony performances, concerts and dance productions, as well as local up-and-coming performers

1^st Thursday is for locals and visitors alike. It provides an opportunity for residents to indulge in local culture, mingle with neighbors and participate in the arts community. The program also offers visitors the chance to experience, in one evening, the diversity of downtown Santa Barbara’s visual and performing arts scene. is aimed at developing a lively atmosphere downtown as well as showcasing the cultural variety that Santa Barbara has to offer.

This month Ergomotion featured Pedro De La Cruz, a native of Mexico. From powerful to passionate, De La Cruz’s subjects flirt, seduce and cajole with their postmodern compositions, intelligence and grace. A bohemian dogma, which when paired with his talent for addressing various viewpoints in two dimensions, give De La Cruz a freedom to express the unique beauty of his muse. www.buenaventuragallery.org

I love bold colors and pop art by all kinds of artists.  Of course, the man who started it all, Andy Warhol, is a definite favorite.  That’s why I’m looking forward to this fall at the Met, as they pay tribute to the legacy of Andy Warhol with Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years. The exhibition examines The Factory founder’s influence on art and culture by juxtaposing nearly 45 of his paintings, sculptures and films alongside works from contemporary artists who have reinterpreted or been influenced by his pop art sensibility.  You’d think they curated this one just for me!

Expect to see pieces that deal with the classic Warhol themes of American consumerism and celebrity from the likes of Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman Chuck Close, Richard Avedon and Robert Mapplethorpe. During the exhibit’s roughly three-month run, The Met will also play host to a handful of special programs and talks with guest speakers like TV host and pop culture aficionado Andy Cohen and artists Deborah Kass and Kalup Linzy.  Don’t miss this one!

On  a sad note, as many of you know Oxford Art Supplies has closed its doors. Oxford Art Supplies began its days in 1964 as a hardware store in the rundown inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. It  was run by Alf and Bessie Altshuler.  In 1974, the owner’s son, David Altshuler, decided to expand the product range to include hand=stretched canvases, artist and student quality paints, brushes and pencils. Since then, Oxford Art Supplies has been serving professional artists, art students, graphic designers, advertising agencies and the complete beginner. We are sad to see you gone.

Sydney set to come alive with Art this September!

Reflecting the diversity of art today, Sydney’s Art Expo is unlike any other visual art event.
The Expo brings together Australia’s most promising names in art, and a new wave of emerging
artists, all under one roof. Plus there are a host of other visual art activities at the Expo, all catering
for the continued growth and interest in art.

Visitors can look forward to discovering new artists, participating in hands-on workshops including
painting, sculpture and photography, as well as seeing artists bring a blank canvas to life in real
time. With artwork for sale at the event to suit every taste and budget, there is something for
everyone!

In addition to catering for established art lovers, Sydney’s Art Expo will also demystify art for the
uninitiated, with interactive exhibits and education programs featuring at the show. These range

1) How did you come up with the gallery name?

Was it your first choice?It came up after much discussion with our two co-founders, as most names we came up with were either too obvious or as Modes of Practise to pretentious, but MOP was more light hearted and approachable…
MOP Projects stands for Modes of Practice.

2) What kind of artists do you want showing in your gallery?

Is the there a general skill level or style that you look for?
Since its beginnings, MOP has aimed to promote young emerging Sydney artists. As ARI’s like MOP grow and change we seek to broaden our focus, and create space for established artists whom do not have, or choose not to have the benefit of commercial representation. MOP provides artists opportunity for exploration within their own practice, and cultivates a space for ideas exchange across artists at varying stages of their career.

3) What is the best way to approach your gallery?

People are encouraged to come and visit current exhibitions, our opening hours are Thursday to Sunday 1pm – 6pm. Artists and curators are welcome to hand in applications for exhibitions and curatorial projects via e-mail and by hard copy in the gallery of which we accept year round.

4) What is your galleries philosophy?

MOP Projects seeks to facilitate a sounding board for artists whom reside within Sydney. We consistently encourage interdisciplinary practices, exploration of ideas and modes of working, cross pollination of ideas through like minded bodies. As well as strengthening  the ARI movement within Sydney and interstate by holding exchange exhibitions and getting involved with cultural events through Sydney.

5) If you can, what advise can you give to an artist looking for

representation, what would it be?

We would say that it all starts with the artwork, as well as your involvement with your pears and your community. Getting yourself out there to openings, getting involved within the community that you are in, sharing studios with other artists. You get to know the people whom run and direct the galleries, and they get to know you. These all are factors that will support and nurture your art career.

6) It is a hard market out there, how are you finding it?

Mot so much for us as we don’t need to focus on sales, just presenting good quality shows and artworks… but that is not to say that we don’t sell for the artists, its just not our main focus.

7) Is it easy to sell art?

Yes, as people think that be course its an ARI that they may not be getting works that will last the test of time, which is sooo wrong as Mop has had  in its 10years of existence 20/25 artist picked up by Commercial galleries and most are now well established in their own rights.

8) Have you any advise when choosing a gallery to show in?

As an artist, it pays to be aware of the local art community that you are a part of. Become an active part of that community by getting to exhibition openings (best way to support your fellow artists), volunteer at ARI’s (like MOP) or volunteer your time to help with exhibition installations, and local events. By becoming involved you get to know directly the people whom work within the galleries, as well as each galleries ethos. This will help you choose which gallery you believe aligns with your own ideals within your practice, and gives you the contacts to become affiliated with them.

9) There are plenty of ARI (Artist run initiatives) out there, What are you thoughts on these spaces?

ARI’s are essential spaces for having the freedom to put up great shows that perhaps not commercial viable, are no less important to the contemporary barrel of ideas. It also brings together the art(ist) community and breaks barriers of established and emerging artists, allowing for a no age limit/no career point limit of ideas.  By abolishing these barriers, a self promoting system of enthusiasm, advice, new ideas and collaboration can be generated.

10) Melbourne vs Sydney how do you see the arts and the major differences?

We don’t, as the differences are what we need or they might as well be the same place…

11) Social media is everywhere, do you use it and does it help the gallery?

We utilise our website, facebook, and believe that it helps spread the words of whats on when. We use the MOP facebook to see whats happening when, promote our shows, other great shows, great articles and the likes. Social media allows for some big art love and idea spreading, both locally and otherwise.

12) What art do you have on your wall at home and your office?

I have started  my collection by art swapping with people, but bought my very first painting last year. A Kylie Banyard, adorns my bedroom wall. Bliss.

GALLERY 1: Untitled Fun – Paul Williams
Paul Williams has created a new series of paintings that explore abstraction and repetition by combining domestic motifs, distorted and silhouetted floating forms and vivid colour. This latest series of paintings sees the artist continuing his exploration of free-form painting through layering, erasure, ruination and revivification resulting in compositions largely created by chance. In 2007 Williams received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with first class Honours and the University Medal and in 2011 received a Master of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts. He was the recipient of the Art on Paper 2009 Friends of Hazelhurst Award at Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery, received a residency at the Cité Internationale des Art in Paris in 2010. Williams’ solo exhibitions include: Wanderings Bathurst Regional Gallery, The Biz Ray Hughes Gallery, Junk Piles and Dirty Styles Kudos Gallery and Confetti Solution Firstdraft Gallery. Recent group shows include: 2020 Damien Minton Annex Space, Go-Figure Sheffer Gallery, Second Nature The Papermill, Southerly Buster Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery and a forthcoming show Gap Year at Artspace. Paul is a Co-Director at Firstdraft Gallery.

GALLERY 2: everywhere for going – Belem Lett
Belem Lett’s work explores contemporary notions of the landscape, space and memory through an experimentally based practice between drawing, painting and sculpture. His current work was produced in reaction to both the disorientating and familiar aspects of foreign space, experienced during extended periods of travel in Europe during 2011 – 2012 . This constant reorientation required within unfamiliar environments, extended his interest in how we perceive and navigate physical space. As a reaction to unfamiliar terrain various forms of data collection became the catalyst for visualising intangible, perceptual aspects of topographical environments through abstraction. Belem Lett is a Sydney based artist currently completing his Masters of Fine Art at COFA on an APA scholarship. Receiving his BFA with first class honours in 2008, he has exhibited in various Artist Run Initiatives and commercial spaces within Sydney and Paris. He was a two-time finalist for the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship before winning in the award in 2010, for which he undertook a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 2011.

‘Photo-Sculpture pictures, objects and paradox’ is a group show bringing together inter-disciplinary artists Criena Court, Michaela Gleave, Gemma Messih, SuperKaleidoscope (Kim Fasher & Sarah Mosca) and Marian Tubbs.
The conceptual framework for P-S emerged from a conversation between the artists, regarding the changing nature of photographic representation. The discussion prompted questions concerning notions of authenticity, reality and observation and the paradoxes inherent in the presentation of photographs. Using photography in various ways within their practice, this group of artists explore the performative and sculptural possibilities of photographs.
Criena Court is a Sydney based emerging visual artist, her practice challenges preconceived notions of the painted surface and explores ideas of reality, perception and self. Criena is a recent honours graduate in painting from the National Art School, Sydney.
Michaela Gleave is an artist currently based in Sydney. Working across a range of media including installation, performance, photography and video, her practice centers on the physicality of perception and the ways in which we understand and engage with the world around us. Michaela Gleave has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and abroad she has participated in many international artist residency programs and was recently awarded a Creative Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Visual Arts.

IGemma Messih is an emerging artist from Sydney. Her cross-disciplinary practice explores our interaction and relationship with the natural world, investigating notions of curiosity through open experimentation both with ideas and the raw potential of materials. She has undertaken residency programs at The Green House in Broken Hill, NSW and will complete a two-month program at NES in Iceland in late 2012. Messih is a recent photo-media graduate from COFA, UNSW.
SuperKaleidoscope is a collective initiated by artists and emerging curators Kim Fasher and Sarah Mosca. Since 2010 they have been collaborating on both curatorial projects and a visual art practice. Together they have been awarded a OYEA ARI Grant from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, the Firstdraft Emerging Curators Grant, an Artspace Studio Residency and were Semi-finalists in the Realise Your Dream Arts Frontier, British Council Award. As collaborating artists, their work explores ideas of failure, optimism and memory. Both currently live in Sydney, Australia.
Marian Tubbs works with assemblage, photography and paint as a means of investigating philosophical questions with form. She has exhibited locally and internationally with recent exhibitions including, Have you ever been to the House of Cashmere? Maybe we could go and just roll around sometime, at DB Project, Sydney and Slush, with the art group Slush at Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney. Marian works as an artist, writer and teacher in Sydney.

Art Month Sydney announces joint Artistic Directors for 2013

Art Month Sydney today announced the appointment of Penelope Benton and Alexandra Clapham

as joint Artistic Directors for Art Month Sydney 2013.

Benton and Clapham are established innovators in Sydney’s emerging art scene and share a

deep understanding of contemporary art and creativity with experience both as working

artists and in arts administration.

Art Month Sydney CEO Paul Becker said:

“We are delighted to have Alex and Penelope join the Art Month team as co-Artistic

Directors. They bring a fresh perspective and unique vision to the festival.”

“Art Month is a strong believer in nurturing Sydney’s next generation of emerging

directorial talent and is excited to be able to offer this unique opportunity to Benton and

Clapham,” said Becker.

Together Penelope Benton and Alex Clapham will draw on a diverse range of art experience to

delve further into the vibrancy and diversity of contemporary art in Sydney, while

connecting with new and existing audiences.

The Co-Directors said:

“We are thrilled to be Artistic Directors of Art Month Sydney 2013 and look forward to

celebrating the incredible talent in this city. We plan to make sure there’s an experience

for everyone, across all art cultures in Sydney.”

Clapham and Benton are Sydney based artists working collaboratively and independently

across installation and performance.  Alexandra Clapham is a co-Director of Firstdraft

Gallery and Manager of Kudos Gallery in Paddington, Sydney. Penelope Benton served a two

year directorship at Firstdraft Gallery in 2008 and is a founding member and co-

owner/Director of The Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville. Benton is currently undertaking

an MFA at COFA UNSW, and has a BA Visual Arts from the University of Newcastle, and a

MArtAdmin from COFA UNSW amongst other qualifications.

Art Month also announced a new Artistic Director mentorship program. In line with Art

Month’s commitment to supporting the contemporary art industry in Sydney, the mentorship

represents an opportunity for emerging creatives and artistic directors to work with

industry icons directly. In the inaugural year of the artistic director mentorship Liane

Rossler will serve as mentor.

Liane Rossler is a highly respected and central figure within Australia’s arts and design

sector. A passionate spokesperson and ambassador for key issues relating to the creative

industries and the environment, Liane is involved in numerous collaborations, exhibitions

and projects. Liane is also well known as a co-founder of Dinosaur Designs and currently

serves on the City of Sydney’s Retail Advisory Panel.

Art Month is Sydney’s annual contemporary art festival held each March and is committed to

showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of contemporary art in Sydney.

The Ashfield Council Artist in Residence program
1. The Program: The Ashfield Council Artist in Residence program is open to performing, visual and literary

artists from regional and remote areas in Australia.
Applications will be accepted from international artists. * Accommodation at Thirning Villa

is provided in exchange for services by the artist.
The focus of the program is on Community Cultural Development whereby the artist will

assist the community to express aspirations through the arts.
The program offers the opportunity for artists to share their vision with the community in

a specific manner.
The proposal should include periods for the artist to develop their own work as well as

time for community cultural development activity.

2. Length of residency:
A residency of three months to six months is preferred. Other proposals will be considered

3. Allowance:
An allowance of $200 per week will be paid to the artist for incidental living expenses.

4. Selection:
A panel of Council and community representatives will select artists.
Artists must complete the official application form and include examples of previous work.

5. Amenities:
Thirning Villa is a restored two-storey heritage building that is situated in the Pratten

Park precinct. The upstairs area has a large kitchen, bathroom, main bedroom and living

room.
There is also an extra room that is suitable for a second bedroom or extra living space.

The bedroom and living areas are carpeted. Downstairs there is a studio/workshop/meeting

space with timber flooring.
There is a large courtyard at the rear of the building and a number of outbuildings that

house the laundry, public toilets and storage rooms. Wheelchair access is limited to the

downstairs area. Off street parking is available at the rear of the building.
Pratten Park includes an oval, children’s playground, bowling green and tennis courts.
The precinct is within walking distance of the Council premises and the Ashfield Shopping

Centre.
The Ashfield railway station is within walking distance, and is a main terminal. There are

frequent express trains that take about 12 minutes to Sydney CBD.
For the term of the residency, artists will have free membership to the Ashfield Aquatic

Centre, Ashfield Library and Western Suburbs Lawn Tennis Club.

Contribution to the Community The artist will make a donation of an artwork created during

the residency.
Details of the proposed contribution should be outlined in the application.

Community development The following can be considered as suitable:
Creative skills development workshops for community groups.
Demonstration/exhibition of artwork, work in progress or open studio for interested

community members.
Weekly talks to visiting groups such as schools.

Animalia: A Short Trip Up III – An art installation by Susannah Williams as part of Sydney

Fringe Festival 2012.
For Fringe Festival 2012, Susannah Williams will compose Animalia: A Short Trip Up III a

site specific drawing installation on the walls at Art Est. Gallery.
Susannah Williams creates site specific installations that expose the drawing process

directly to the audience.  Composed of a range materials including paper, pins, collage,

string, tin and fairy lights,   Susannah’s ephemeral drawing installations create visual

narratives that explore the formal concerns of drawing, namely colour, line and structure.

In Animalia, Susannah uses the animal form to house personal ideas of history, memory,

movement feeling and space.  Over 10 days, Susannah Williams will have an open studio,

composing and installing Animalia using paper collage, pins and string.

This painting is inspired from an old family photograph.  The photograph is of my cousins eating watermelon on the porch of my great-grandfathers home outside of Hernando Mississippi.  I have always enjoyed looking at this photograph and decided to appropriate it as a painting.  I like the imagery, but also the underlying stereotyping of  watermelon and black boys.

‘Paper Works II’ – April/May 2013

‘Small’ co-curated by Olivia Welch – July 2013
Being small is often defined in the negative sense – not big, not usual, not imporant. For this show we have asked artists who are familiar with working on a small-scale to contribute works that defy this notion. In addition to those who are more comfortable working on a larger scale have been challenged to produce something which fits this category but is not in any way a diminutive correlate of their larger works.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 26 April 2013.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery by Friday 5 July 2013.

Delineate is an arts program that seeks to enrich the creative initiatives of the Don”t DIS my ABILITY campaign run by Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In partnership with Accessible Arts the program is designed to boost and foster arts and disability practice within NSW.

Delineate is offering a three-stage small arts grant program to develop a deepening of engagement for project participants with a focus on sustainable outcomes. The program has developed with a new approach, through identifying and addressing recipient’s feedback from previous grant rounds.

ARTIST CALL OUT: FREE FALL @ OAF
As Free Fall commences it’s third season in early September, artists are required to create initiative performance works within the space.

Although there is no strict or formal conceptual framework in terms of themes, etc, the most important thing is that the work is durational, involves some element of risk taking, and visually transforms the space. There must be an element of play and experimantation and is therfore an ideal environment to test ideas for future projects of the individual artists.
As the new curator of the space, I want young emerging artist who know the environment well and are able to really shake things up
Performances take place on both Friday and Saturday nights between 10-12.30am.
This is a paid artist opportunity to create a fun-experimental world within an unconventional art environment.
THE GLASS CUBE:
4.6 long approx 3.2 wide and approx 2.8 high
The space is sound proof so work should be silent. There are is an entrance door in the bar area if you want the audience to interact with the space. There are a total of four power-points. The floor is bare concrete, the walls are thick glass and the ceilling is perforated masonite. Lighting can be added to the space but must be kept low so as not to detract from the stage. Other than this, you have artistic freedom

The fantastic thing about this building is that it is constantly full of surprises. When I visited Good Jelly the other day (another art space that is set up in building 157), I discovered that a whole new wing had been opened up. A space that had previously been hidden by white forbidding walls. This is precisely how owners Carolyn Nowaczyk and Nina Kourea came to open their new gallery. Upon removing a white panel attached to the wall, they discovered a secret door; a door that would soon connect them to their twin gallery space!

The exhibition entitled ‘Home is where the art is’ features work from a wide range of local artists including Tash Benton, Jasmine Carter, Margie & Justin, Evan Newby, Carolyn Nowaczyk, Bec O’Shea, Julie Prsa-Fowler, Tegan Russell, Lara Serinsin, Simanion, Mirko Sossai, Donna Townend and Karren Yellow. The opening very much aimed to capture the character of it’s title by creating a homey, warm environment complete with Dakkah, falafel balls… oh and circus performers! Ok maybe not so homey then, but definitely exciting. Ladies on stilts in vivid, velvet costume and a woman running around in underwear and balloons, enticing people to pop them if they dared, all seemed like a fun performance installation that accompanied the art. Will they fall on me, won’t they, the suspense is killing me.

Just a lady in a gallery on stilts. It’s all good.

I must admit though, for a gallery opening I didn’t get to look at much art. But I guess it would be weird if I did. As everyone knows, gallery openings are not for involving yourself in deep, philosophical thought on mysterious processes of art and art making. They are about socialising!

However Some works that I was particularly drawn to and had to wait impatiently for the crowds to disperse to get a good look at included Tash Benton’s sexy nude series as well as Justin-James Clayden’s LETree (Light Emitting Tree).

I think I need to go back and get a better look at these works as well as give the exhibit a proper once-over to fully appreciate ‘Home is where the art is’. Either way, I think Studio 19 will definitely become a fantastic asset and alley to the Wollongong’s budding artists. More so than it is now, that is.

The Modern Museum at Stockholm, Moderna Museet, will open a new exhibition tomorrow entitled “He Was Wrong”.

“In the exhibition Picasso/Duchamp “He Was Wrong”, Moderna Museet in Stockholm is exhibiting the two giants Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp together for the first time. They are often regarded as the two most influential artists of the 20th century – Picasso, who personified the modernist painter, and Duchamp, the indifferent ironist and chess genius, who challenged painting and transformed art into a maze of intellectual amusements. Now, visitors to Moderna Museet have a unique opportunity to witness this battle of giants and see where it leads.“

The exhibition runs from August 25th 2012 to March 3rd 2013 in Stockholm.

BLACKTOWN CITY ART PRIZE

Entered by hundreds of artists, the Blacktown City Art Prize has grown in popularity and reputation to become Western Sydney’s premier art prize.

Now in its seventeenth year, it features outstanding works by local artists, from across NSW and environmentally themed works by children and young artists. Painting, watercolour, works on paper and sculpture sections are judged by industry professionals with total prize monies and acquisitive funds of $24,000 awarded.

DEFIANCE SCULPTURE PARK AT THE GATE GALLERY 2480 WOLLOMBI RD, WOLLOMBI NSW 2325

Campbell Robertson-Swann and Lauren Harvey of Defiance Gallery and Willem
and Caroline Van Zanten of The Gate Gallery are excited to announce the
launch of ‘Defiance Sculpture Park at The Gate Gallery’ in Wollombi Valley, NSW.

Defiance Gallery and The Gate Gallery have joined forces to realise their shared
vision of establishing a permanent sculpture park of national significance
to celebrate the wealth of talent in Australian sculpture.

Forty outdoor works by prominent and emerging Australian and International
sculptors will be placed throughout twenty acres of beautiful gardens
surrounding The Gate Gallery, making this sculpture park the first of it’s kind
in Australia. Visitors and collectors can enjoy the works all year round throughout
the changing landscape of the seasons. All works are for sale.

Wollombi is a beautiful and historic country town 1.45 hours drive north of
Sydney en route to the Hunter Valley. There are great restaurants, local shops,
vineyards and B&B’s nearby just a short drive from The Hunter Valley, making
it ideal for an enjoyable day trip or a weekend away in the country.

In addition, Defiance will curate four indoor exhibitions annually at the
gallery. These shows will feature smaller works by the exhibiting sculptors and a
selection of paintings and drawings by well known Australian artists.

Open Studio @ Artspace – Alex Kershaw, 24 & 25 August
In his Open Studio @ Artspace, Friday 24 and Saturday 25 August 11am-5pm, Kershaw will present work in progress
from two current video projects. The first filmed in collaboration with Ikebana sensei’s while in residence at
Tokyo Wonder Site in 2011. The second, made with animal hunters in New York State, during his residency at the
International Studio and Curatorial Program in 2012.

Kershaw uses video and photography to mediate intercultural exchange with people and communities from a specific place.
In this process, everyday people become participants and collaborators in the production of the work.
The artist is undertaking his Artspace Studio Residency before he departs Australia to begin a Ph.D.
at the University of California, San Diego.

Brenda May Gallery is currently accepting proposals from professional practising artists in Australia
and New Zealand for the following group exhibitions scheduled for 2013.
‘Sculpture 2013′ – Jan/Feb 2013
Scheduled for January, this show continues the tradition of opening our year with an exhibition devoted
to the best and most interesting contemporary sculpture. Although there are no restrictions for this exhibition,
we will only consider work made by professional sculptors which has not previously been exhibited in Sydney.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 19 October 2012.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery on Monday 21 January 2013.
‘Paper Works II’ – April/May 2013
We already exhibit a number of artists who work with paper in extraordinary ways – as such this show is about
the nature of paper itself and we will consider any work produced on paper, with paper or about paper.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 2 February 2013.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery by Friday 12 April 2013.
‘Small’ co-curated by Olivia Welch – July 2013
Being small is often defined in the negative sense – not big, not usual, not imporant. For this show
we have asked artists who are familiar with working on a small-scale to contribute works that defy this notion.
In addition to those who are more comfortable working on a larger scale have been challenged to produce
something which fits this category but is not in any way a diminutive correlate of their larger works.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 26 April 2013.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery by Friday 5 July 2013.

Submissions should be posted directly to the Gallery (email submissions and proposals sent by registered
post will not be accepted) and should include a CD of recent work and images in support of the proposal,
an up to date C/V and a single page outline stating which exhibition you are submitting for and the nature
of the work you are proposing. Please no powerpoint or keynote files.

Emerging curator needed for collaboration with UK artists

PsychoanalYSL is a research-led artist collective based in London whose work often interrogates the political
economy of art in the era of globalisation. They have most recently exhibited at the V22 Collection (UK),
Banner Repeater (UK) and the Sichuan Art Institute (China). With major exhibitions commissioned by the UK Arts Council
and the British Council, their work has featured in Art Monthly, Art Review and many other international publications.
PsychoanalYSL are looking for a Melbourne-based curator t
o assist them in the making of new work for an upcoming exhibition called TV Dinners, which will be held at Bus Projects,
Melbourne from 28th of August until the 15th of September, and which will feature the work of some of Britain’s
hottest young artists and art collectives including Lucky PDF and Eddie Peake, as well as Sydney-based duo Soda Jerk.
PsychoanalYSL wish to secede their art space within the show to be used as media space. On their behalf,
their curatorial co-conspirator will sell to brands operating in Australia the opportunity to advertise on the artists’
screens in the exhibition. Just as they would if working in media sales, the curator will receive a commission from psychoanalYSL
(in this case 20% of the value of the media that they sell).

PsychoanalYSL will work with the curator (by email and/or Skype) to guide their endeavours.
The curator wil be expected to put in up to approximately four days’ of work in total for the next four weeks, spread over the course of those weeks.
The collective are more interested in the process of working with their collaborator to execute
this proposition than they are in the results achieved, so success and failure are both acceptable in this work.
But a bright emerging curator with the charm, confidence and intelligence to represent this work to strangers is crucial.
