Prudence Staite’s art is fun, often beautiful, and… edible. This U.K. based artist is throwing traditional mediums out the window and creating her wares entirely of food.

Most recently, she was commissioned by Disney to recreate scenes of the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to promote the re-release of the film. She fittingly created the scenes entirely (as you might have guessed) out of apples. Considering the medium, the detail is incredible. Check out, Dopey’s face.

image from news.bbc.co.uk

Her Andy Warhol inspired portrait of Marilyn Monroe is made entirely of smarties. Not sure if you’d want it on your wall or in your belly, but either way its sure to please.

image from news.bbc.co.uk

Staite can make almost anything out of food. Her website boasts designs that range from entire chocolate rooms to life-size food sculptures. Her food art can be shipped internationally and Staite will hand make anything to order.

I’m adding chocolate sculpture of Brad Pitt to my Christmas list. I always thought he looked good enough to eat.

Everyone is sick of the flu. There’s nothing fun about shots, hand sanitizer or reading about it in the news every single day.

But if the fear mongering does turn into reality, then you might as well be fashionably prepared.

Marjan Kooroshnia, a Swedish textile-design student has turned the sterile medicine masks into wearable pieces of art. The masks protect you from germs and the thermochromic ink changes colour when your breathing temperature rises, giving others ample warning when you might be potentially contagious.

Mask designed by Marjan Kooroshnia

Kooroshnia says that the masks are also for fun, “using different patterns for masks might be suitable for different people, from the aspect of beauty and color,” she says.

So now if you do get the flu, at least you’ll be stylish!

In a collaboration with the Japanese bicycle saddle maker Kashimax, Paul Smith has covered a bicycle seat with his signature striped leather. The result is adorable! With only 28 being made, this collaboration is the definition of exclusive.

And when was this cute and comfortable seat launched?

Four very appropriate words, The Bicycle Film Festival, in Japan.

Red is no longer red. It’s “Tomato Puree.” Green is “Dried Herb” and gray is “Eucalyptis.” Yes, colour has its own naming dictionary, just like babies.

Pantone Rubik's Cube from gizmodo.com

For 45 years, Pantone has been the self-proclaimed “world-renowned authority on colour”. It makes the colour predictions for the season, sell swatch books and paint chips for hundreds and thousands of dollars, and ensure that the purple logo on a Cadbury chocolate wrapper in London is the exact same shade as the one you get in Auckland.

Pantone swatch book from bathpromotions.com

Would Coca-Cola be Coca-Cola without red? Starbucks without green? McDonald’s without red and yellow?

Not a chance. Colour is one of the most important components of advertising. It’s how we identify and connect with a brand. Which is why companies, like T-Mobile and UPS, are starting to buy the rights to their colours, including the names.
T-Mobile has owned the “colour mark No. 395 52 630 ‘magenta’ (RAL 4010) since September 12, 2000” and have sued another company for using their magenta without permission.

Meanwhile, UPS has trademarked the word Brown in their slogan, “What can Brown do for you?” Last year, this slogan was added to the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame between 42nd and 50th streets in New York and will be inducted into the Advertising Icon Museum in 2010.

With colours being bought, artists and designers either have to deal with the legal stuff or put up with having fewer colour options.

This could make the future of the colour spectrum looks a lot less vibrant, let’s hope not…

Recently I have seen few times the TV advertisement of “The Policing Pledge“, a £1.9m national advertising campaign explaining what should be expected of police in England and Wales. Launched on November 21, the Home Office’s campaign involves adverts on television, radio, magazines and internet throughout November and December, as well as leaflets distributed to 6 million homes.

According to the Policing Pledge, neighbourhood officers should spend 80% of their time on duty in the community and members of the public reporting a non-emergency problems will be seen within 48 hours. In December, the Home Office also introduce “Name and Shame” plan, which encourage police forces and councils to use websites to name key local convicted criminals.

What urges the Home Office to put up the Policing Pledge is the criticism against the police that failed to investigate around 1.7 million out of 5.2 million reported crimes last year, including sex attacks, robberies, fraud, violent crimes and drug offences, as well as large numbers of burglaries and thefts – around one-third of all offences were dismissed as unsolvable within hours by “screening out”. The highest rate of screening out was by the Metropolitan Police, with only 48% of reported offences dealt with in 2008/9. In parts of the country, an average of around 75% of theft are screened out, as well as around 70% for criminal damage, 55% for burglary, 44% for fraud and forgery, 20% for robbery, 15% for violent offences, 2% for sexual attacks, and less than 1% for drug offences. We experienced petit crimes like M’s bicycle stolen or his Vespa’s number plate cloned, but I guess that nothing have been done for it. But criminals are the sole winner with this ”screening out” system, and this could endanger the security of the community and possibly encourage more crimes to happen. Hope this campaign will work to regain the public’s confidence and trust in police force, and contribute to reduce the crime rate.

The design used for the Policing Pledge is originally from “Keep Calm and Carry On“, the World War II motivational poster produced by the government in 1939 but never used. It was rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of companies, and used in a range of products such as T-shirts, mugs, bags, posters, tea towels and so on. I like this simple but strong design, and we have two posters ourselves. M gets panic easily and when that happens, it is useful for me to remind him what he should do, by just pointing out the poster!

Jackie Kennedy… who?

Michelle Obama is a name that has become synonymous with style, grace and elegance, and for her first Whitehouse State Dinner she surpassed all expectations.

With a nod of admiration to the Indian Delegation in attendance, Obama wore a strapless golden-cream gown with an overlay of silver detailing, designed by Indian-born Naeem Khan, and made in India. The gown, which was all done by hand, took three weeks of work by approximately 40 people to make. Khan is well known for his intricately detailed work and resulting understated glamour. As is apparent, he was the perfect design choice for the dinner.

Simply stunning.

The viewer/participant melts into the installation from above using a steep slope, and then walks down into a ray of light. The images alone are dramatic and give off a sense of Nirvana through LED lights. The colours vary from blue, grey, orange, pink and then red within the space. As figures float in and out of the space they become a part of the art by casting shadows as distorted shapes across the space.

Technology is continually evolving and improving upon what already exists. Cell phones are now smart phones, DVDs are now blue rays, and tattoos are now – moving? Body art is the latest thing to receive a wild technological makeover.

image from trendhunter.com

Researchers University of Pennsylvania have created the technology that could literally turn our skin into screens. Implantable LED-carrying chips will make this crazy concept possible. The silicon chips are tiny – only 1 mm long and 250 nanometres thick – and are held in place by silk, which will eventually biodegrade into the body. The lab mice who have tested the chips have shown no irritation.

The primary use of this bizarre technology is medical, for example being able to show a blood sugar reading on one’s arm. The world of body art, however, could experience some shocking changes as this science progresses. No longer would bad tattoos of our younger foolish days be front and centre, instead we could have ever changing skin display thanks to these implantable LED chips.

image from gizmag.com

This new tattoo technology could potentially bring about a number of possibilities. The future may let you watch your favourite television show on the back of your hand or have human billboards walking around flashing new ads in your face via their faces every twenty seconds. Freaky stuff.

But is this taking it a bit too far? What about computer glitches? Scary and strange stuff…but is that what people may have said about walkmen 30 years ago??

Electronics giant Philips has already caught onto the craze, coming up with a video showing some potential and quite sexual uses of the moving tattoo.

Image from brixtonpound.org

Economics and design rarely co-exist, but when they do, the results are well worthwhile. Take for example the Brixton Pound, a new currency designed specifically for London’s Brixton neighbourhood.

£2,000 ($3,300 USD) was spent on designing and printing the small works of art that have been circulating in Brixton since late September. The notes are brightly colored and adorned with portraits of iconic figures in Brixton history, such as the Jamaican civil rights activist Olive Morris; the environmental scientist and activist James Lovelock; and Vincent van Gogh (who lived in Brixton for two years while in his 20s).

The new currency is more than a pretty piece of paper. The Brixton Pound project was launched with the intention of encouraging local consumption and helping shrink carbon footprints. It works like this: if you make a purchase at one of the 120 participating businesses in the area, you are offered your change in B£ notes. These can then be used at any participating business as an alternative too, or in combination with, standard sterling notes. Many businesses have begun offering discounts to those using B£ notes. To make things even easier, any B£ note can be exchanged for the same value sterling note at one of two participating locations.

Forty thousand B£ notes are currently in circulation, in denominations of one, five, 10 and 20 notes. Although it is too soon to measure the impact of the currency, many argue that with a world moving so quickly towards a global economy, the economics behind the B£ project are backwards. Yet, the powerful sense of community the concept invokes leaves us crossing our fingers that the project will prove the economic skeptics wrong.

Regardless of the economics behind the idea, we’re happy to see that notes have been offered to collectors on eBay and that the artistic value at least is being appreciated.

The brilliant artist Thomas Demand is currently exhibiting at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin. His working method is to rebuild life-size models of spaces of cultural significance, all made out of paper, and then take large scale photographs of it. I remember attending a talk where he was asked if he sees himself as a sculptor or a photographer and he replied – just an artist. Whenever I see his work I am fascinated by the beauty of it but at the same time strangely anxious. Part of this show is a recent work of a German bus shelter where a famous teen pop band – Tokio Hotel – used to sit and wait for their school bus. If you´re in Berlin, go and see it.

The British painter Roger Hilton spent his final years at his cottage in Cornwall suffering from the effects of long term drinking and smoking. Confined to bed he spent most of his nights drawing with charcoal and gouache and writing letters to his wife, Rose Hilton. During the day he slept.

Independent publishers Archive of Modern Conflict have now released a book, edited by Timothy Bond and designed by Melanie Mues, with these drawings and letters. I had the pleasure to look at a copy and it really is fascinating and beautiful. The book can be bought here.

I went to see a ballet at l Opera House for the first time in my life. I like dance, and have been to modern dance, Flamenco, Belly Dance, Indian dance etc, but I’ve never been really keen to see a ballet – one reason was that I prefer more energetic and exciting movement than elegant ballet, and another reason was that I just can’t stand the tights of male ballet dancers, even on their beautiful toned bodies. The reason why I went to see the ballet is because Japanese visual artist Tatsuo Miyajima designed the stage of one of the program.

What I saw is the Royal Ballet triple bill “Agon / Sphinx / Limen” – all short contemporary ballet programs less than 30 minutes each. I am completely novice in ballet, so I won’t make any comment on the ballet dance itself, but a little explanation of the programs.

One of the 20th century’s leading choreographers, George Balanchine’s Agon is his final collaboration with Igor Stravinsky and the first stage performance was given by the New York City Ballet in 1957. Sphinx was inspired by the French playwright Jean Cocteau’s 1934 play ‘The Infernal Machine’, a variation of the Oedipus legend, and it was originally choreographed for American Ballet Theatre in 1977 by the American choreographer Glen Tetley. It is a trio for the Sphinx, Oedipus and Anubis, the jackal-headed god who shepherds the dead into the Egyptian underworld.

Then Limen, which was designed by Miyajima and what I was looking for. Limen, a word that relates to ideas of limits and thresholds, is the work by Wayne McGregor , the Company’s Resident Choreographer who also choreographed the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with music by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. The first scene is the dancers moving behind a half-transparent screen on which tumbling and spinning digital numbers are projected – it was very mysterious and dreamlike. Then the screen rises dancers in electric color costumes come on the stage with slowing changing colors. In the third scene, the light is turned down, and five different color stripes appear on the dark stage. My eyes were caught more by the shadows of the dancers casted on the stripes, rather than dancers themselves. Final act is performed in front of a giant wall of blue LED lights flashing on and off at different intervals, and the wall slowly approaches to the front of the stage as the number of LED increases little by little – and over.

To be honest I don’t have a strong impression about the ballet performance the night, though I admit that the dance was graceful and elegant. Maybe because I bought cheap seats on the upper balcony with restricted views – as my intention was to see the stage design of Limen by Miyajima. I also failed to change my negative view against male tight costumes! It is said that this is the first experience for Miyajima to design a theater stage, but his minimalist approach with superb use of different colors and light and darkness was pretty effective and it was like a beautiful art installation. I am glad that I went!

For those who want to take control of the text their eyes focus on, several web geniuses have come together and invented some tools for the typographically inclined. Design, after all, is about every single detail, even the smallest serif on the smallest letter on the smallest word.

Image: Helvetimail.com

Helvetimail is an application that changes all the onscreen words in your Gmail account into a clean, evenly-spaced canvas that’s refreshing and easy to read. Gone are the days of loud, ugly themes and fonts that burn your eyes

You can even turn your Twitter feed into a Helvetica haven by using the Helvetwitter software that’s also available. Josef Richter invented these apps to bring a sense of simplicity to sites he thought had strayed from their bare-bones typography approach.

Helvetica celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007, which also marked the premiere of the documentary of the same name by Gary Hustwit, at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Companies like American Apparel, Evian, Toyota and Comme des Garçons all use this typeface as part of their corporate identities. Helvetica revamped advertising and is considered one of the the most important fonts of our time. Many typographers and designers have also said there’s no way possible to improve the font’s appearance and legibility.

Helvetica is found everywhere.

Also check out LoveHelvetica.com, a website that’s essentially a collection of anything with the font on it. A favourite example: A t-shirt that says, “HEL-FUCKING-VETICA” on it.” Helvetica. Hell yeah!!!

Type and Media @ KABK (via I Love Typography)

The Dutch strike again! At the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, a mere eleven students are accepted annually to the prestigious Type and Media masters program. The intensive ten-month course guides these students through the type design process from the ground up, exploring typographic theory, brush calligraphy, and even stone carving. Ultimately, these skills are put to the test when each student is tasked with creating and developing their own typeface. And, to little surprise, the results are mindblowing.

You can see all of the final products here.

In particular, I love Abi Huynh’s typeface Arietta (especially italicized). I don’t think any of the fonts are actually downloadable – which is a pity – but they are awesome to look at nevertheless. The course also has its own group photostream over at Flickr, also chock-full with delicious typographic eye candy. Pure sex, really. I don’t think I want to pursue typography in college, but this looks to me like yet another goal to add to my ever-growing list: to design a typeface in my lifetime.
