10. Sholay (1975)

It’s a tad difficult to fit ‘Sholay’ into a single paragraph. Arguably the most complete and entertaining film of all times, the film boasts of some of the biggest stars of its time-Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri. It also made a star out of a character called Gabbar Singh -the most imitated character of Hindi cinema. The legendary Gabbar’s dialogues are now folk-lore ( Pachas pachas kos door gaon mein jab bachcha raat ko rota hai to maa kahti hai beta soja ..soja nahin to Gabbar Singh aa jaayega ) peppered with his quirky vicious laughter showing his tobacco-stained teeth or the trademark ferocity ( Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur ), Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh is a true blue cult-figure. Each and every character of Sholay is a part of the cinematic folklore, but apart from Gabbar the other most popular characters are Hindi cinema’s best-known buddies, Jai- Veeru and Veeru’s blabbermouth love interest, Basanti. The two friends singing ‘ Yeh dosti hum nahin chhodenge’ makes the most enduring image of screen friendship. Hema Malini as the chatterbox Basanti was a laugh riot. The three share some of the most memorable scenes in the film. Sholay is a classic to be watched again and again.

09. Deewaar (1975)

Deewaar

Yash Chopra’s ‘Deewaar’ is a classic example of a perfect Indian melodrama of the 70s –two brothers raised by a long suffering mother. One turns out to be good and the other gets strayed into the big bad world of crime. Amitabh had already made a mark with ‘Zanjeer’ as the ‘angry young man’ and with ‘Deewaar’ he enforced his image emerging as a force to reckon with. The potent dialogues written by the hit duo of Salim-Javed left a huge impact on the audiences receiving whistles and claps by the front-benchers. Who hasn’t heard “ Aaj mere paas bangla hai, gaadi hai, bank balance hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? Mere paas … Maaa Hai ”! Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor play brothers and Nirupa Roy their mother. In the climax when Amitabh is shot by his own brother to drive home the good-over-bad philosophy, he staggers into a temple where he dies in the arms of his mother. It was one of the most powerful scenes in the film. Though the entire cast including Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh did a good job but the film belonged to Amitabh Bachchan who made ‘Deewaar’ a fare to remember with his powerhouse performance.

08. Arth (1982)

Arth

One of the best films coming from the filmmaker Mahesh Bhat, ‘Arth’ was known to be based on his relationship with the late actress Parveen Babi. The film had two of the best actresses of Hindi cinema, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil pitted against each other resulting in some super-volatile performances. The soulful songs rendered by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh were truly beautiful. The film is about the complexities of an extra-marital relationship from the points of view of the husband (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), the wife (Shabana Azmi) and the mistress (Smita Patil). Shabana excelled in the role of a wronged wife and gave the character a certain dignity hitherto absent in such roles despite the scene when in a drunken state she calls her husband’s mistress a whore publicly. But Smita walked away with the accolades as a guilt ridden, insecure ‘other woman’ and her final scene with Shabana when in a hallucination she picks up the imaginary mangalsutra beads of Shabana shakes you up completely.

07. Jane Bhi Do Yaaron

Jane Bhi Do Yaaron

You just can’t not watch this film and then once you have watched it you can’t stop talking about it. One of the most brilliant satires coming out of Hindi cinema, ‘Jane Bhi Do Yaaron’ has some of the brightest actors of Hindi cinema. The film is about two simple and honest photographer friends, Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Vaswani. By chance they witness a murder and are dragged into the corrupt real estate deals with politicians and bureaucrats. Actors like Pankaj Kapoor, Om Puri, Satish Shah and Satish Kaushik shared some incredibly funny scenes in the film. Like Sholay people remember the outrageously funny dialogues of the film. Naseeruddin Shah’s “Thoda khao, thoda phenko”, Om Puri’s “Oye DMello, Tu to gaya” are some of the most memorable lines from the film. Some of the funniest scenes include a drunk Om Puri trying to help Satish Shah’s dead body start his ‘car’ (coffin) and the famous Ramlila scene are side-splitting.

06. Mr. India (1987)

Mr. India

Shekhar Kapoor’s ‘Mr. India’ had all the ingredients required for the superhit status that it acquired. A superhero like protagonist, great plot, Sridevi at her sexiest best, catchy songs and Hindi cinema’s most adorable villain, ‘Mogambo’. Anil Kapoor as the guy who had the power to go invisible was just awesome in the film. Amrish Puri’s menacing act as Mogambo was not just a turning point in his career but also the most memorable comic-book-villain-acts in Hindi cinema. The audiences were thrilled every time Amrish Puri glared down at them with his fiercely bulbous eyes sporting an atrocious blond wig and garish knee high silver heeled boots. They came back again and again to hear him mouth possibly the most repeated line of Hindi cinema (post 80s), ‘Mogambo khush hua’. Children loved the film for its special effects and the kiddie brigade taking on the villain. The grown ups couldn’t get enough of Sridevi in one of the most erotic ‘wet saree’ (blue clingy chiffon) songs ever in Hindi films, ‘ Kaate Nahin kat te’.

05.Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)

Aamir Khan’s debut film, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ made him an instant heartthrob. ‘QSQT’ is one of the landmark films of Hindi cinema. It was a welcome break from the violent 70s and 80s with all and sundry doing their ‘angry young man’ act. Even the original ‘angry young man’ was no longer angry. ‘QSQT’ was a simple youthful love story with a fresh look at doomed romance. It is about a star-crossed young couple from traditional feuding families a la ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The young lovers elope and are chased by their parents. When they find no hope for their love they decide to die and make their love immortal. The film was a blockbuster making Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla household names.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

The film that may soon make an entry into the Guinness Book Of World Records, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ has run in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir for 500 weeks. It completed 500 weeks on May 13 and will complete 10 years in October 2005. The film has won ten Filmfare awards – a record for a Hindi film. A complete entertainer, ‘DDLJ’ was a sweet love story in an NRI backdrop. Directed by Yash Chopra’s eldest son, Aditya Chopra in 1995 at the age of 23, it was a trendsetter of sorts with the lead couple being second generation Indians living in England with deep Indian values. The music of the film was superhit and so were the ‘great Indian wedding’ preparation scenes portrayed in the film. Shah Rukh – Kajol chemistry crackled on screen and they achieved the numero uno spot in Bollywood post ‘DDLJ’.

03. Satya (1998)

Satya

’Satya’ spawned numerous gangster flicks but it remains one of the best in its genre. The film was about the genesis of a criminal from an innocent man called Satya. Another character that made a star out of a ‘nobody’, Bhiku Mhatre was a no-frills-no-nonsense role portrayed brilliantly by Manoj Bajpai. The dreaded gangster Bhikubhai is not your regular formula baddie. He is a trigger-happy underworld don who doesn’t need a ‘get-up’ to look the part. Despite being a sadist he evokes sympathy and has a great sense of humour. Manoj Bajpai’s intensity was almost reminiscent of a certain ‘angry young man’ of yore. Bhiku Mhatre floored the audiences as an attitude ‘bhai’ with killer statements like, “Mumbai ka raja kaun? Bhiku Mhatre!”

02. Lagaan (2001)

Lagaan

’Lagaan’ was the most volatile combo of the two things that makes Indians tick- cricket and Bollywood. The result no doubt was exhilarating. The film was three hours long, but it passed in front of you in a jiffy, each ball being cheered, each shot being egged on. It’s a complete entertainer with songs that became instant hits. The film is a period drama set in the 19th century British-ruled India. Set in a small village called Champaner it tells the story of the simple village-folk struggling to pay off the annual debts (Lagaan) to the British. It had all the trappings of a blockbuster; Aamir Khan, great songs, humour, good-over evil storyline and to top it all, cricket. ‘Lagaan’ went on to be nominated as one of the five entries at the Oscars, the only film after ‘Mother India’ and ‘Salaam Bombay’. It won eight Filmfare awards in all the major categories.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’ is made with astounding sensitivity and enthralling quest for perfection. It tells the story of a deaf and blind girl, Michelle McNally and her teacher, Debraj Sahai. They together embark on a journey to get Michelle out of an animalistic existence to reach a common goal; of knowledge and respectability. ‘Black’ is inspired by the life of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan. Bhansali has extracted mind-blowing performances out of his actors, whether it’s Ayesha Kapoor as a boorish young Michelle or a full-o-beans adult Michelle played by Rani Mukerji or even the alcoholic teacher superbly enacted by Amitabh Bachchan. ‘Black’ is bi-lingual set against an Anglo-Indian family living in the picturesque Shimla. The filmmaker and his actors have bettered their previous best to create a luminous piece of work called ‘Black.’

In all these great performances by these revered actors, there is one small cameo I have always been fascinated by in the movie “Deewaar” enacted by Mr. Satyadev Dubey.
Whenever I see that sequence and the way Dubey Sahab has enacted it … I get bowled over by the sheer intensity this actor has put in, in that 2 minute appearance on screen and one is made to understand that its not the length which should matter to the actor but the charaterization matters and also how the director would explore that small character and make it all big and extraordinary.
Is it like this always? or Is it some chemistry which works between the director and the actor?

Hats off to Mr. Yash Chopra and Dubey sahab for that mind blowing sequence and performance in Deewaar.

Most of us actors are into this business of acting becoz of these above gentleman.
Right from childhood .. its been Rajesh khanna or Dharam ji or Amitabh Bachchan .. some imbibing their mannerism .. some their style and some their acting prowess.
Salute to them and salute to their performances.

Arth (source: phulki.com) Directed and story by Mahesh Bhatt I’m not going to lie to you: this movie

Arth (source: phulki.com)

Directed and story by Mahesh Bhatt

I’m not going to lie to you: this movie was hard to watch. The reasons are threefold: The pace was much too slow (and I can take a slow movie), the cinematography was unimaginative, and the scene changes were so abrupt they were jarring. The film seemed to want to be an “art house” film with songs put in as accents. There is nothing wrong with this, but then my sensibilities crave more art-house aesthetics—I think I’m talking about the overall quality here, since even the boring cinematography (many times it seems like the camera was set on a tripod and left there) is not what Bollywood usually does. As for the story, that is the one interesting thing about it, as is the inspiration behind it. In fact, for me, the story was more interesting than the movie, an unfortunate side effect that many of the Bollywood movies are producing. I’m still figuring out why—if the sloppy translation leaves my creative brain to write its own more interesting script, or if, even though they tackle stories with novel proportions, I still need them to delve into more of the psychology of the characters. I’ll muse on it later, I’m sure. The story is of a film director who is having an affair with his unstable leading lady. There was no secret that the story was based on the actual filmmaker’s own affair. What is fascinating here is that the scorned wife becomes the focus and force of the film. She moves out, starts her own life, and eventually refuses to take the husband back because she has fully realized her fulfillment as a human being. The eyes of this woman are abnormally huge, but she just looks very beautiful, not creepy.

Song Highlights: All of the songs are sung by the character who is a singer by trade. He sings with the camera pretty much steady on his face the whole time. His character is Muslim, and the song genre he sings in is qawali, an Indian Muslim song genre used often in Bollywood films to characterize a Muslim character. The songs weren’t remarkable (to me), but I liked that he was always singing about his love for the main female and how he would be true to her even if she only wanted him as a friend. The music is by Jagjit and Chitra Singh and lyrics by Kaifi Azmi.

Tidbits: See my review.

Rating: The lack of creative camera movement, the slow pace, the still song numbers, and the inability to understand intrinsically the significance of a Bollywood movie attempting what this film attempted (not the least a serious treatment of adultery) will render this movie largely inaccessible to Americans.

Library Collection: A good choice for historical purposes but not really any other.

While there are countless number of ghazals by him that we love…it would take a lifetime to post them, but here’s a start with “Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar.”

I have had one full week of coached sessions and have been able to complete the workouts as prescribed. What I find difficult is to fit my life around the workouts. I am having difficulty see how I will be able to fit a life into my training. As a Dad, a husband, a coach (kids sports) and business owner… it looks like a disaster in the next few months! At a glance, my schedule called for 8.5 hours of training this week. By June, it looks like I will be doing 17 hours of training per week!

Here is a quick glimpse of the last week:

Sunday
2 hr spin in my garage
1.25 hr swim

Monday
1.5 hr run

Wednesday
1.25 hr spin class

Thursday
45 min. tempo run

Friday
1.25 hr swim

Sunday
2 hour spin my garage

Monday was interesting. I had a 2.5 hour run to do, but due to a meeting and kid function, I had to run 60 minutes in my garage, then get my son up and off to school, followed by a short drive to meet a friend to complete the remaining 1.5 hrs before a 10:30am meeting!

I think I am starting to see a pattern…work/exercise/chaos…work/exercise/chaos…you get the idea.

—

I spoke with Trish, Joints in Motion Coordinator, from the Arthritis Society, and she was excited that I was raising money for them and by doing an Ironman. She herself is beginning to train for her 1st triathlon. Good luck with your training Trish!

Don’t forget you can donate online (see sidebar). No donation is too small, every little bit counts. I’m so excited to be able to raise money for this wonderful cause. Thanks in advance for all your support!

Have a good week.

If you are thinking of taking a summer course, please discuss it with me so that we can be sure it represents the best use of your key resources — time, money, and energy. For some students, summer coursework is very sensible. For other students, a summer might be better spent pursuing other activities.

Of note: there will be several courses offered that meet the Art/Music/Drama requirement for Core. These include: ARTH 10100, ARTH 16100, ARTH 17709, and ARTV 10100. And in the world of SoSc Core, both Self and Power are slated to be offered. Listings are, of course, subject to change.

Most of the ghazals we grew up listening to often had heavy duty high sounding words in them whose meanings few people understood. And people not understanding the words would not admit to it either, fearing that he would fall in the estimation of fellow ghazal lovers with such a confession.

Ghazals of 1980s are different. Many ghazals that became popular had simple easy to understand lyrics. take this ghazal for example. I am surprised to note that I actually understand every word of it ! And same was the case with every other listener.

And this was not as if this ghazal was wtitten by just about anyone. It was written by Kaifi Azmi, so there is no question that this song is a proper ghazal. Use of simple Hindi words like “Rekha” must have encouraged even layman listeners to listen to such songs.

Not just the lyrics, even the music and the singing is minimalistic.

And the effect is magic. This simple sounding ghazal from “Arth” is one of the most memorable ghazals from Bollywood movies in 1980s.

Song- Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho (Arth) (1982) Singer-Jagjeet Singh,Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, Music-Kuldip Singh

Lyrics

tum itnaa jo muskuraa rahe ho

“Arth” was an art movie or parallel movie as low budget movies were described as in those days. Apart from the realistic story line which were supposedly based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt, the movie had some nice ghazals. It was one movie that helped popularise ghazals which was a welcome development considering that the other option in Bollywood filmy music those days used to be “disco” songs.

“Arth” had quite a few nice ghazals penned by true blue shayars. Here is a memorable ghazal written by Kaifi Azmi. The movie, incidentally had his daughter, Shabana Azmi acting in this movie, and indeed in this song. Raj Kiran sings this ghazal on the screen addressing Shabana Azmi.

Satellite and aerial images of Earth’s surface are stitched together to give users a continuous 3D map of the globe — redefining what it means to have the “whole world in your hand.”

Google’s Local Search is integrated into the application, allowing users to search for a business or address and fly directly to that spot on the virtual globe. And, Geo-tagged Wikipedia articles and Panoramio are overlaid on the map, making location-based content discovery a breeze!

With support for the iPhone’s multi-touch display, moving around the Google Earth iPhone application’s 3D maps is actually a notch more intuitive than the desktop variant. Rather than relying on mouse-clicks to control zoom-level, map rotation, and tilt-perspective, iPhone users can zoom, rotate, and move the map with double- and single-finger inputs.

And, with built-in accelerometer support, Google Earth for the iPhone allows the user to control their 3D perspective by simply tilting the iPhone. Tilting the iPhone changes the Google Earth map perspective, bringing terrain to life in full 3D!

Google Earth for the iPhone is said to work quite well with a 3G data connection, but the application’s responsiveness isn’t perfect on a first-generation iPhone according to media reports. It’s not quite as graphically fluid as some of the iPhone games.

Religious of God (Rab)

Human Faith is a religious of God (Rab) of humanity (Rabi). The definition of humanity (Rabi) in our faith is the quality of being humane and respectful for life. The Nine Affirmations of human faith are the commandment of God (Rab) of Humanity (Rabi). The crime against the Nine Affirmations is blasphemy and great disrespect for our God (Rab) of humanity (Rabi).

Human Faith is heavenly light of knowledge restriction on sacred light is eclipse on humanity and blasphemy.

1. We believe all people are entitled to freedom, peace and justice. We will do all that we can to see these rights are promoted and protected in the current century.

2. We believe any kind of negative discrimination such as racism, sexism and religious persecution are crimes against humanity. We cannot endorse sole progression of man from animal as it rejects spiritual evolution. We will respect all human kind.

3. We believe in freedom of the press and object to media censorship. We believe we have the responsibility to stay informed and the right to have resources for this available without restrictions.

4. We reject war, terrorism and arms build ups as they are plagues on mankind and the environment.

5. We support and encourage efforts to preserve and protect the environment. Air and water pollution, unbridled harvesting of fossil fuels and loss of habitat need to be stopped. We are commit to do our part by recycling and curbing wasteful habits. We recognize our responsibility to future generations in this regard.

6. We believe we must provide education worldwide in health and family planning. We must foster respect for life and accept responsibility for the offspring we create. Programs facilitating border less adoptions need to be encouraged.

7. We believe everyone is entitled to a good quality of life including clean water and air, energy availability for home and commerce and a healthy diet. Every nation and its leaders must be accountable that these needs are met.

8. We will respect all life including animal rights and insist on their protection and humane treatment in food preparation entertainment and sports.

9. We are honest in all our dealings and we respect the dignity of others. We will instill these beliefs in our children in order to promote happiness and peace.

Human faith religion starts from the premise of humanity which is more than a physical face and biological organism. It is the religious consciousness in which matter of human soul is in the prison camp of human body. It is a wisdom that can only be obtained from the nature of God (Rab). It is a stage of awareness where purity of living in the physical senses without bias. Human faith is the last stage of human evolution. The fundamental links in our spiritual and material evolution that changed us from violent to sober human being is the element of love . We know this element of love was created before the universe for human evolution and it can not be separated from the soul .True love (Rabi) is part of human soul in which strong devotion is created for another soul in environment where matter meet for human evolution . This element is not part of sexual desire nor matter of modernizations symbols of “Holy Pleasure” neither romance. This power of love is to teach respect of humanity .It is the power that controls the universe. When a baby cries the power of love force mother to nurse the baby. This is the same force when chicks open their eyes in the egg shell the same element forces them to use the beak to break the shell and fallow the mother nature. Human faith religious is a public school for humanity (Rabi) .The leisure of learning truth, honesty and freedom. It is the eminent brain (Rabi) for batter society and the library of knowledge. It is the sacred water of life that emerges with the seven colors of human diversity to dissolve racism. Human life is spiritual force of affirmations in which nine sisters are the museum of humanity (Rabi). It is the religious in which muses is dedicated to the nine affirmation of human faith. The new principle in genetic segregation can grow better sex, height and color but with natural theological law of dominance can produce better psyche. Protein structure in human genes are playing vital important role for evolution from the beginning of the human faith of Adam for humanity. It is supernatural activity of chemical mutation based on theology. The rule of nature has shown better result for the offspring we create with the family values that are based on some kind of theology.

The posture of humanity (Rabi) needs direction of love (Rabi) to cure qualm and hate hypocrisy from monotheism and polytheism. The zeal of humanity is to diminish symbolism to prevail freedom from labyrinth ideologies of religious and political leaders for peace. We all human beings are the heart of humanity (Rabi) in which human faith religious is the xylem to dissolve distastefulness from monotheistic and polytheistic faiths. Humanity (Rabi) is theological evolution and logical process of supernatural system of Supreme Being, the theory of human faith religious is philosophy to evolve that human embryology is theological evolution and consciousness of supreme power (Rab). Human faith teaches not only moral values it can give realistic purpose of achieving complete fulfillment of internal life. The spiritual change from loneness to loveliness is based on love by giving unlimited trust in God (Rab). Human mind is miracle of Supreme Being when we struggle to boil it at luck warm temperature of wisdom to understand fundamental of life by reading (Rabi). The ever lasting stage of satisfaction for mind is to reach Supreme Being before death. The journey of memories can be pleasant with nine affirmations of human faith. We believe that it is time to joggle every conscious to show them that human mind is superior matter not material. The festival of life can be celebrated with wisdom of human faith knowledge once we realize that we all are part of the superior race. It advocates spiritual and moral principles on very high scales for the longest term in human history. It is time to modernize our faith by adopting true faith and educate mankind in accordance with basic principle of life. Our vision is to introduce true human religion by mobilizing communities and faiths around the world to improve people’s lives .Our mission is to strength the bond of humanity (Rabi) by introducing human faith religion. Human faith is a religious of Adam’s monotheistic faith and knows that God (Rab) is the creator and overseer of the universe at all the time and all matters. The waves of fresh air with small particles full of wisdom and oxygen of (Rabi) are in the air it is just matter of time when they touch the brain to change the heart.

IN GOD (Rab) WE TRUST WE HAVE FAITH IN HUMANITY (Rabi).

Rabi has many meaning in our language.

1. Rabi is Book of Human Faith.

2. Rabi is brain.

3. Rabi is humanity.

4. Rabi is our tongue.

Passenger car sales outpaced the SUV and trucks but this is not enough to stop the decline in American vehicle sales.

Automakers reported higher sales of small cars as oil and gasoline prices climbed to record highs in April 2008, but said Thursday (1 May, 2008) that overall vehicle sales in the United States plunged during the month, reports The New York Times.

Sales decreased 29 percent from April 2007 at Chrysler, 23 percent at General Motors and 19 percent at the Ford Motor Company. Toyota’s sales fell 4.5 percent, and both Honda and Nissan reported 2 percent declines. The numbers are adjusted to account for two more selling days in April this year. Overall, Americans purchased 1.25 million vehicles in April 2008, 110,000 fewer than in April 2007.

Rising prices of gasoline and lowered consumer confidence were key elements that ensured automobile sales in the U.S. for to plunged, reaching the lowest annual rate in the past 10 years.

“We think we’re in the trough of the downturn in the second quarter,” G.M.’s chief sales analyst, Michael C. DiGiovanni, said. “What we did not count on is oil being as high as almost USD 120 a barrel. That’s causing a very sharp shift to cars and crossovers from trucks, and it’s also lowering the overall industry.” reports The New York Times.

Consumers are looking much more interested in buying small car for fuel efficiency, attractive models and low price than SUV and Trucks. But at the same time this increase in small car sales is not enough to cover a steep decline in SUV and trucks, making the over all vehicle sales to go down.

According to analyst at Arth Business Research, “This decline in vehicle sales is expected to continue in the coming months of this year, with oil prices still hovering up and consumer confidence going down. But attractive models from automakers in small car segment with increasing demand are expected to cover the decline at some extent.
