Realmente bueno el album de los Strokes, recuerdo que en el cch era la sensanción...

Todos conocemos el semanario musical NME, que se dedica a promocionar a la música Indie en Gran Bretaña, comúnmente siempre al día de todo el entorno musical tanto local como mundial. Esta vez la publicación inglesa nos proporciona la lista de los 100 mejores discos de la década. ¿En que se basaron? Bueno, realizaron una encuesta hace como 2 semanas (no recuerdo bien cuando vote) y el resultado completo se puede ver aquí. Yo solo les dejo la lista de los primeros 10 con su respectivo link de descarga ;D.

Me gusto el resultado, realmente se le hace mucha justicia a bandas que han marcado la década, como los Yeah Yeah Yeahs aunque me hubiera gustado que salieran The Hives…pero no se puede obtener todo en la vida xD! Me deprime que el Absolution de Muse este en el lugar 49 pero creo es algo a comparación de Coldplay que esta vez, apesar de estar en la lista de votación, ni siquiera aparecio entre los 100… Ni modo nos quedaremos con la mención en el 2002 -w-u.

Una de las bandas más interesantes que ha salido del Reino Unido en los últimos 5 años, ha alcanzado su popularidad gracias a los sencillos de sus dos primeros discos: Dancing Shoes, I bet you look good on the dancefloor, Fluorescent Adolescent o Teddy Picker, que además de pegajozos, sin duda son unos temazos. Ahora los chicos de Sheffield acuden al genio Josh Homme para grabar su tercer disco y los resultados son muy gratificantes.

Comenzando con My propeller, inmediatamente llama la atención que la banda se distancia del sonido del disco anterior, Favourite Worst Nightmare. Ahora no parecen estar apurados o necesitados de hacer las canciones más rápidas que puedan componer, lo que les permite experimentar con nuevas propuestas. Así, el cuarteto se americaniza y sustituye el frat rock por una ambientación lúgubre con un sonido ligeramente sucio, que recuerdan de cierta manera la propuesta stoner del desierto de California, que el productor Homme ayudó a forjar desde los noventa con bandas como Kyuss o Queens of the Stone Age.

En conclusión, Humbug termina siendo un disco que como nieto lejano del Mojave Desert, tiene un compendio de canciones muy parecidas entre sí, donde a pesar de que no hay temas que puedan reventar en la radio o que vayamos a escuchar en una fiesta, dejan claro que la banda liderada por Alex Turner no se conforma con escribir himnos para los borrachos de Inglaterra, y han comenzado a madurar su sonido. El resultado: uno de los mejores discos de este año.

Definizione semplice e lineare applicabile alla maggior parte delle situazioni quotidiane ma per troppo tempo lontana dal mondo della musica o piuttosto da un po’ di tempo lontana dal mondo della musica. Da quando fare musica è diventato un mestiere e un modo di guadagnare e sopravivere i vari produttori discografici hanno deciso bene di passare a setaccio ogni idea e ogni testo sfornassero i musicisti da loro scritturati rendendo le loro idee conformi alla massa e atte ad essere vendute ad un pubblico più vasto; insomma hanno trasformato una passione in un business rendendo ciò che alle origini era pura e limpida comunicazione nella più infima forma di marketing. Leggi di mercato rigide vigono su qualsivoglia artista che decida di andare avanti grazie all’appoggio di una casa discografica e, malgrado i buoni propositi iniziali, nel corso della carriera ognuno a suo modo s’è dovuto arrendere al modo di vedere dei produttori che hanno plagiato e uniformizzato il modo di fare musica di quasi tutti gli artisti.Negli ultimi anni invece per chi desiderava portare avanti i propri propositi continuando a suonare la propria musica s’è aperto uno spiraglio: l’indie.
Questo modo di fare musica (per niente facile da realizzare) prevede l’autofinanziamento in modo da poter portare avanti le proprio idee senza dover sottostare alle rigide leggi di mercato. Basta avere una band, qualche soldo da parte e la voglia di remare controcorrente per ottenere i proprio obiettivi, per potersi sentire veramente liberi anche per quanto riguarda la musica.Malgrado sembri qualcosa di utopistico o controproducente, rappresenta perfettamente, a mio avviso,  l’essenza della musica, quella vera e pura fatta di passione e poche influenze attraverso la quale si possono  trasmettere passioni o più semplicemente portare avanti le più stravaganti teorie musicali arrivando addirittura a creare generi musicali totalmente nuovi.
Insomma senza arrivare ad idolatrare questo modo di entrare nel mondo della musica si deve ammettere che, con la giusta determinazione e coraggio si può arrivare ad ottenere lo stesso successo e gli stessi incassi dei gruppi che operano sotto la supervisione, alquanto invasiva, dei discografici ma mantenendo allo stesso tempo una libertà creativa totale e quasi sconosciuta nella musica degli emergenti.

Basically i was reading NME and i was looking througn the letters page. So there were all these letters about how pissed of they were about last weeks nme about how kasbian were on nme’s cover and had a massive feature and how they said they are the best band in the uk. this is what Skepta and Kasabian have in common. so with matt wilkinson replying to the people who sent letters in he said” but with the artic monkeys currently shedding fans by the truckload and doherty in eternal meltdown, serge and co rightfully grasped the mantle of Brit rock with both hands – and who can blame them ? some body had to do it”.

Hier soir, concert des Arctic Monkeys au Zénith de Paris. Déjà vu par le passé, les “petits princes du rock anglais“, qualificatif débile lu dans un magasine français, sont de retour pour donner vie sur scène à leur nouvel album : Hambug. J’avais déjà vu les singes britaniques lors de leur deux tournées précédentes. La première fois, c’était au Printemps de Bourges où il défendait sous le chapiteau du Phoenix, la grande scène la moins bien insonorisée de France, leur premier opus Whatever People Say I Am – That’S What I’M Not du haut de leurs vingt balais. Pas carré, trop statique, brouillon du début à la fin, ne déclenchant aucune hystérie dans le public, le concert fut plat et décevant pour une ouverture de Dionysos. Difficile ceci-dit d’être à la hauteur des espérances quand un buzz jamais vu venu de
Myspace, est autour d’un groupe aussi jeune. L’année suivante, les sheffieldiens sont une des tête d’affiche du festival belge du Werchter. Le gros bassiste qui faisait toujours la gueule a dégagé, les Arctic Monkeys semblent plus à l’aise, plus entrainé à occuper des grandes scènes et réussissent à balancer du son lourd à faire pogoter des dizaines de millier de personnes sur Brianstorm ou When The Sun Goes Down. Concert très plaisant mais pas à la hauteur du potentiel qui se dégagent de ces p’tits gars qui ont, ça c’est sur, un talent hors norme.

Une petite échappée belle entre deux albums permet au le leader pas ultra-charismatique Alex Turner de monter avec ses potes de The Rascals un side-project mastercalss nommé The Last Shadow Puppets. Cette parenthèse enchantée met tout le monde d’accord, ce mec a du génie et n’est pas que le fluoresent ‘adolescent qui crache des riffs rocks endiablés, il sait aussi inséminer des mélodies innovantes dans une pop rock enivrante.

Fort de cette nouvelle expérience, The Arctic Monkeys reviennent en 2009 avec Hambug, un album “de la maturité“, terme journalistique habituellement bidon mais qui, pour une fois, est parfait pour cette évolution radicale. Nouveau look, un peu plus de bouteille et surtout une rencontre intéressante avec Josh Homme le rouquin tourmenté des Queens of the Stone Age, (“qui ressemble à Hulk” d’après un spectateur d’hier soir en face de moi) mène à une musique plus mélodiques, avec plus d’arrangements, plus de pédales sur les instruments, moins dans l’épath’ incisive d’un refrain tranchant, avec une voix moins mise en avant. Hambug n’est pas une fille facile qui se laisse dompter docilement, il doit être écouté, prit avec attention pour charmer à ne plus s’en défaire.
Cet album me colle à la peau depuis sa sortie et j’attendais donc beaucoup de ce concert.

La première partie assurée par les délirants rockeurs kitchs des Eagles of Death Metal est très plaisante malgré le fait qu’l n’y a aucun effet de lumière et que le concert prenne en cuisse que lors des dernières chansons. Du Stoner à moustache de biker, où l’on reconnait aussi la touche Josh Homme qui a été batteur sur le premier opus du groupe. Moi aussi I wanna be In L.A..
Fermeture du rideau, attente classique, la musique s’arrête, la lumière s’éteint, le spectacle peut commencer.
Un appareil photo qui vise le rideau envoi sa lumière orange pour la mise au point et laisse apparaitre en ombre chinoise, la silhouette d’Alex Turner. La réaction est immédiate, la moitié des filles deviennent hystérique. Le groupe apparait avec une lumière magnifique, boisée, se faufilant à travers la fumée pour donner une ambiance magnétique au premier morceau : Dance Little Liar. Une entrée mystérieuse qui électrise un public qui n’avait pas vraiment besoin d’être poussé pour exploser. Dès le second titre, c’est partit à fond les ballons avec Brianstorm qui est suivit par leurs morceaux punchy dont le singlesque I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor. Quelques moments d’accalmie pour permettre à la fosse de reprendre son souffle avec Sketchead où l’incroyable The Jeweler’s Hands et sa fin encore plus puissante en live.
Une très grosse performance d’un point de vu musical mais leur expérience les a quelque peu blasée. Autant le batteur a l’air dans le jus pendant tout le concert et de s’éclater, autant Alex Turner n’a pas l’air super enthousiaste et ne communique pratiquement pas du tout entre les titres et se casse un peu rapidement à la fin du spectacle. Autre petite remarque le concernant, lorsqu’il n’a pas sa guitare dans les mains, Turner a l’air pataud, ne sachant pas trop quoi faire de ses grands bras maigres et de déplaçant en free-style pas contrôle. Le résultat est que son charisme scénique en prend un coup et c’est dommage. Néanmoins, les Arctic Monkeys restent un des groupes qui m’a le plus emballé dans le rock aussi bien en live qu’en album ces derniers mois. Un show avec cameras on stage bien fait, un son loin d’être mauvais pour un Zénith et des Singes qui savent doser de façon ingénue les changements de tempos de leurs morceaux. Un concert très agréable, Arctic Monkeys est peut être un des meilleurs groupes mondiaux dans le rock-mainstream, la preuve en est, leur single Cornerstone est un tube pour les charts alors qu’elle est la plus chiante du soir et de Hambug. Ils font ce qu’ils veulent musicalement mais aussi un single ou deux un peu faiblards pour faire plaisir à la maison de disque et aux radios, ils ont déjà tout comprit. Un grand groupe qui n’est qu’en début de croissance.

É impossível agradar todas as cabeças pensantes desse mundo; ainda mais quando o assunto é música. Cada um tem uma relação musical e encaram essa junção de letra e melodia de formas diferentes. Há aqueles que se deixam levar pela trilha do momento; outros, nostálgicos, que vivem de sucessos do passado; e há ainda os que escutam música apenas quando entram no carro, e o bom é “qualquer coisa que está tocando no rádio” – sim, essas pessoas existem.   

Com essa ideia, é inevitável que a singela lista, contendo 1001 discos, possa satisfazer os gostos musicais de todos nós. O que pude observar é que o período dos anos de 50 a 80 recebeu uma atenção especial no livro. Talvez porque a maior parte dos autores é sexagenária; ou, talvez porque nessa época havia uma dedicação maior com essa arte. Se pensava, se criava e se envolvia emocionalmente com a música…

Sejamos realistas, os anos 90 e 2000 registraram uma decadência na qualidade musical. CLARO, que não podemos generalizar! Muitos álbuns bons foram lançados e estão listados no livro como discos do Artic Monkeys, Muse, Arcade Fire,Radiohead,  entre outros. Porém, analisando os sons bons dos anos “antes de cristo”, álbuns mais trabalhados e bem produzidos eram mais comuns. OK! Confesso que me enquadro entre os nostálgicos e chatos que insistem em lembrar da “boa e velha música”.  

Mas já que estamos no post dos reclames, fica meu protesto por não ter encontrado mais álbuns brasileiros nessa lista. Por cima, posso citar alguns como “Acabou Chorare”, dos Novos Baianos, lançado em 1972; “Secos e Molhados”, de 1973 e o maravilhoso “Chega de Saudade”, de João Gilberto, lançado em 1959. 

Contudo, esse é apenas um registro de uma apaixonada pelo ritmo, a poesia e a arte que é música brasileira; principalmente da nossa maravilhosa Bossa Nova.

There’s been plenty of announcements recently about upcoming gigs, so let’s do a quick round up for you.

The XX will soon be playing in Dublin

Irish boys Director will be playing in Whelans on 24th October. Tickets are on sale for €15.

Passion Pit have already sold out The Academy, but they have changed the date again, to 2nd November. Good luck getting a ticket for this one, as their popularity continues to increase following brilliant Oxegen and Electric Picnic shows.

Irish band Ham Sandwich will be in Whelans on 7th November. Tickets are only €15.

We’ve already written about this one, but Marina & The Diamonds isn’t sold out yet and The Clink urge you to get a ticket. She plays in The Academy on 11th November.

Cork band Fred continue on their never-ending tour (this will be their third time playing in Dublin in 12 months) when they come to Academy 2 on 14th November. Tickets are €17 on Ticketmaster. I was recently at Academy 2 and its a far more intimate venue than The Academy, which should make this a good gig to head to. Tickets are still on sale.

One performance that really stood out for me at EP was Rodrigo y Gabriela. They will be playing two gigs in Dublin in November – Sunday 15th will be at Vicar Street and Monday 16th will be at the Olympia Theatre. Tickets are still available for Vicar Street for €30.

The Artic Monkeys are going to be playing in The o2 on 26th November, after the release of a new album, Humbug. Tickets are going for €42.20 over on Ticketmaster.

Kasabian will play in The o2 right after the Artics (27th November). Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9AM and will be €33.60.

Gomez tickets are still on sale for their gig in The Academy on 28th November for €26.

Lucia posted about Modest Mouse last week, but the tickets went on sale yesterday for €27. They will be playing in The Academy on 7th and 8th December, but both are sold out on Ticketmaster.

Newbies The XX are going to be playing in The Button Factory in a pre-Christmas gig on 19th December. The bad news is that this gig appears to be sold out, although tickets were a very reasonable €14 on Ticketmaster. This could be an interesting gig to attend, as at EP they were very unassuming when performing on stage, almost statue like. Maybe they will do better in a more intimate environment.

Eyes Open…We’re Watching!

Entre las más cañeras, ‘Crying Lightning’ termina siendo un single bastante decente, gracias sobre todo a la intensidad añadida a su segundo estribillo, y ‘Pretty Visitors’ cumple también sin alcanzar la gloria de ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’. Pero es en los medios tiempos, en los temas que son casi baladas, donde ‘Humbug’ reluce más. ‘Secret Door’, ‘Cornerstone’, ‘Dance Little Liar’ y ‘The Jeweller’s Hands’, aunque no resisten las misteriosas comparaciones con los Smiths que acompañan al grupo desde el principio, son buenas canciones. Las ayuda la voz quebrada y medio negra de Alex Turner, que casa perfectamente letras con estructuras, a menudo cantando cosas que de raras resultan atrayentes, como “te escondes en mi sopa / el libro revela tu rostro”. En ‘Dance Little Liar’, distorsionado, se hace acompañar de coros un tanto soul.

Por el contrario, pistas como ‘My Propeller’ o ‘Dangerous Animals’ probablemente sólo despunten de verdad en directo, lo que siempre ha sido el gran triunfo del grupo. Su talón de Aquiles, traspasar su enorme energía y potencia a estudio.

I’m really looking forward to this Shane Meadows is one of my favorite directors, Dead Mans Shoes is in my top 10 films of all time and I really enjoyed This Is England and Somers Town.

Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee is an improvised, low-budget mockumentary shot over five days which follows Le Donk and Scor-Zay-Zee. Fifteen years ago Le Donk seemed to have it all. Now his life is shit. Le Donk has lived, loved and learned. Along the way, he’s lost a classy girlfriend in Olivia (Olivia Colman), but gained a talented sidekick in Nottingham rap prodigy Scor-Zay-Zee (who’s been around for ages, his track Great Britain is a UK Hip Hop classic) AKA Dean Palinczuk (playing himself) whom he decides to take on a road trip that he hopes will change both their lives forever. With Meadows and his fly-on-the-wall crew in tow, Donk sets out to make his protege Scorz-Ayz-Ee a star with a little help from British indie-rock icons The Arctic Monkeys.

So I’m always going to be a week behind on reviews because, well, I have to have time to listen to them.

Artic Monkeys- Humbug

I’m a huge fan of this British band’s loud grungy sound. This album takes a small departure from their previous 2 releases and focuses on a much darker sound that can be felt throughout. Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) produced this album and while he doesn’t’ imprint the QOTSA sound on the group, his presence can be felt on every song. Singer Alex Turner’s voice and witty writing is about the only similarity between this album and their previous works. In truth, this album feels like a transitional album; like they are testing possible directions for future albums. Different, but good.

Blitzen Trapper- Black River Killer

Blitzen Trapper did something unique with this 7 song album. It’s a little too big to be an EP and not quite as large as their previous albums. It also reuses the song “Black River Killer” which was featured on their last album, Furr. The six members of this band are known for creating whimsical storylines with their songs, and this album is no exception. The title track is the story of the ups and downs of a ruthless killer; and even if the subject matter is dark, the music remains upbeat and whistle-worthy. This band makes folk rock fun.

Song suggestion: Black River Killer

Imogen Heap- Ellipse

Ellipse and Imogen Heap, for that matter, are pretty much the definition of “Starbuck’s music.” Every cool hipster type has the IH musical catalogue in heavy rotation on their iPods and several of her songs can be found on numerous indie-love-story-esc films. Now, while I do not quite consider myself cool or hip, I find myself liking this album too. And I can reassure her devoted fans that the album doesn’t disappoint. My only beef with IH is that all of her albums sound exactly the same. Don’t get me wrong, her music is almost painfully beautiful, but I couldn’t tell you the name of one of her songs even though I own several of her albums. Oh, and one more thing, I have no idea what she is saying…ever. While there is nothing earth-shattering about this album, I like the overall feel of it. It’s really good, calm background music.
