I am a newcomer to the world of jazz. But thanks to getting hooked on the late Jeff Healey’s, My Kinda’ Jazz radio show, I’m now a true fan. Over the last year, I’ve downloaded works from great classics like Artie Shaw and Duke Ellington, to newcomers like Sophie Millman. They happily round out my ipod mix and help me feel like any old night can be special.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend and you’re curious about the depth of jazz in Toronto (and beyond), why not check out Art of Jazz, which runs from June 5th – 8th in the Distillery District.

Art of Jazz has been around since 2005, and its aim is to boost jazz education and performance in our city. It doesn’t ask any more of you than an open mind and a small fare for a ticket. As an added perk, everything’s held in the gorgeous event spaces of the Distillery District (the Thompson Landry Gallery being a personal fave).

If this weekend’s festival isn’t your bag or you’d prefer to sip a cocktail and listen to some jazz at another time, here’s a list of fun spots in the city to hear local acts:

The Pilot Tavern www.thepilot.ca

Dominion on Queen www.dominiononqueen.com

The Old Mill Inn – Home Smith Bar www.oldmilltoronto.com

The Rex www.therex.ca

Listening to live music not only supports the artists but also the local venues who host them. Get out there and support the arts and culture scene in Toronto! It just might give you something fresh to talk about at your next dinner party.
