Following up on Jake’s guest blog on youth helping other youth through the arts, I’m posting a video

Following up on Jake’s guest blog on youth helping other youth through the arts, I’m posting a video clip showing a group of Tariro students in the low-income neighborhood of Epworth. Here, our students perform a song they composed about HIV/AIDS. For many of Tariro students, traditional music, dance, and poetry constitute important means of self-expression. In a society where HIV/AIDS is often stigmatized, music helps young people to openly speak about the disease, and to share their experiences as individuals living in communities deeply affected by the virus.

Additionally, music, dance, poetry, and drama are ideal activities for organizations working with youth in low-resource settings, as students can engage with music and dance for little or no cost. Tariro’s marimba and dance program costs around $150 per month, benefiting 15 of our students who participate on an ongoing basis, as well as other drop-in participants. Our program has largely paid for itself, through the production of an album of field recordings of our students performing, which we sell at benefit events in the US. The album is available over mail order as well- contact us through the website to request a copy.

Finally, activities such as drama, music, poetry, and dance encourage confidence, creativity, and self-expression, which are especially important for young women. Our students report that learning about culture through music and dance has also assisted them in school, particularly in classes about Shona language and history. As in the United States school system, however, there are often debates in the nonprofit world about whether or not organizations should fund this type of “extracurricular” activity, or stick to the basics, trying to extend essential services to the greatest numbers of those in need. My personal opinion is that the additional awareness we are able to raise about our programs, both in Zimbabwe and in the US, makes this type of program well worth it! Do readers have personal experiences or other perspectives to share about working toward peace and justice through sharing artistic expression?

I recently finished reading Groundswell, a book by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff of Forrester Researc

I recently finished reading Groundswell, a book by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research. I read Marketing in the Groundswell this past summer, which is essentially part two of Groundswell. I recommend reading the latter. Here are my highlights from this book as they relate to arts organizations:

Forrester defines the “groundswell” as a social trend in which people use technologies to get the things they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions like corporations. “Social technologies have revved up that word-of-mouth dynamic, increasing the influence of regular people while diluting the value of traditional marketing.” What implications does the “groundswell” have for arts organizations? For starters, arts marketers should aim to cultivate online audiences and inspire them to spread the word about their organization.

The “groundswell” has shifted the balance of power. Arts institutions cannot ignore this trend and need to embrace new digital technologies to remain relevant to the majority of audiences today. Forrester believes that companies that focus on understanding the “groundswell” can learn to work within it and achieve great success.

Some interesting figures: 29 percent of Americans watch user-generated videos. 1 in 4 Americans are reading blogs. 1 in 4 online American adults visit social networking sites at least monthly, and 22 percent of teenagers check in daily. 25 percent of Americans read ratings and reviews at least monthly. What do these statistics mean to arts organizations? Arts marketers should create a company blog, if they haven’t already, and should post video content frequently. Also, social networking is on the rise and arts marketers should tap into sites that their audiences are already a part of.

Before launching a new digital marketing project arts organizations should answer the following questions: What are your audiences ready for? What are your goals? How do you want relationships with your audiences to change? What applications should you build?

Forrester identifies five primary objectives that companies should consider before joining the “groundswell”, and advises companies to focus one of the following: listening, talking, energizing, supporting, or embracing.

To profit from listening, arts organizations need to plan to act on what they learn.

Forrester suggests the following techniques for talking with the groundswell: post a viral video, engage in social networks and user-generated content sites, join the blogosphere, or create a community.

The key to succeeding in social networks is to help people spread your message and to measure the result. Arts marketers can apply for a Google Grant, which awards free AdWords to various philanthropic endeavors.

Arts organizations should measure the level of audience engagement – how far down the marketing funnel your audience member has traveled.

Energizing the “groundswell” means tapping into the power of word of mouth by connecting with, and inspiring art patrons. “Word of mouth is a powerful amplifier of brand marketing, achieving results no media campaign can achieve.” Arts marketers should aim to cultivate relationships with people who are passionate about their cause.

What does the future of the “groundswell” look like according to Forrester? The “groundswell” will be rooted within every activity, not just on computers, but on mobile devices. Recently, we have seen a surge in mobile phone applications. Also, participation among more people and companies is increasing rapidly. Forrester cautions that companies that aren’t wired into the “groundswell” in 2012 will look out of touch. What does the future of digital media look like to you?

Show runs THROUGH DECEMBER 29th.

Artists Statement: ‘URBAN ART’, are photos of graffiti-sprayed, artful and colorful expressions left by often unknown artists to artist wannabes. Whether they were being playful or mischievious… destructive vandals or showing inspired communications… whether they were trying to show the gang’s colors or express anger, love, misguided celebrations…whatever… it is creative vernacular that has taken over the early 1940 construction in the WEST BOTTOMS area of KC MO, as well as many urban street corners in NEW ORLEANS, and some in JOPLIN to ST. LOUIS, on abandoned storefronts. Architecture left standing alone and neglected, often are reborn with new meaning by the creations of these gypsy artists that come at the crack of dawn to leave their mark that might wash off with the first rain or remain for eternity. Focused on their mission, hurriedly but with often great detail to simple scatterings. The images are shared here with you to draw your own conclusions. Is it vandalism? or is it ART?

ALSO SHOWING: a vibrant collection of unique and expressive images from the creative mind of CURTIS ALMETER: URBAN Sophisticated photography giving a thought provoking look, with a avant-garde twist on modern portrait photography.

BRANDON NEPOTE, area sculptor, will join the show next week with his works showing the use of abandoned materials as art.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m gonna introduce the artist of the week a little earlier this week… This week is going to get tough, so I might now get a chance to blog about the artist of the week on Wednesday. In turn, I’ll do it now, while I do have time!

So if you haven’t noticed, this week, I would like to introduce you to 劉德華 Andy Lau. Like last week’s artist, Andy is also cantonese. Only difference from past artists of the week is that he is an older generation singer. Like I said before, I like to listen to a variety of music, so I want you to be able to enjoy a variety of chinese music as well. That is why we have Mr. Lau this week! By the way, when I say he’s older generation, I mean my parents are near his age… Nevertheless, his age should not make you like him any less. He is a classic in the asian music industry. It’s like… when people are obsessed with Phil Collins in America. Well, think of Andy Lau as the Phil Collins of Asia.

I’m not gonna lie. I don’t really know much background info on Andy, but I do know that he was also in many classic movies, such as Return of the Condor Heroes, House of Flying Daggers, and Infernal Affairs. Andy Lau is also one of the 四大天王 Cantopop Four Heavenly Kings. Yes, that is a compliment for him. I think the other three are Jacky Cheung (another classic, but I’ll save him for another day), Aaron Kwok, and Leon Lai.

But anyways, take the time to listen to some Andy Lau songs, the mandarin and cantonese ones, and to watch some of his movies, which are considered great classics. If you are interested in asian culture, he’s a major star you just can’t overlook.

Enjoy!

The local Canadian TV stations started off broadcasting over the air and made money via advertisemen

The local Canadian TV stations started off broadcasting over the air and made money via advertisements. When the Cable Companies started out, they re-broadcast the local channels on cable for convenience. Everyone was happy until advertising revenue started to fall because of competition with other entertainment sources available (ex. Internet, personal devices, video game consoles).

The “local” stations have had it pretty good up until now: all they had to do was re-broadcast shows already available on the American channels while throwing in local news and the occasional slot for shows like Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo (here in Manitoba). Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo has its roots from a pre-Internet time. There’s no reason it couldn’t be done online, other than the fact that older people may not be Internet savvy, a problem that could be solved with the local cable access channel.

As I see it, there are three ways to solve this problem:

1. Make Local TV a Package, Not Part of Basic Cable.

Take CTV, Global and CITY (I’m basing the channels on Winnipeg, add others for other cities) out of the basic package and put them in a local package. Viewers can pay extra for the package and then the networks can be paid fees based on the subscriptions.

Even better, give networks the option of being in basic without fees, or in the local package with fees.

2. Ditch The “Local” Channels.

Get rid of the local channels. The cable company could then contract out for local news and broadcast it “over-top” when the American channels have their local news. They could contract out to several companies and use a different one on each different American channel. We would end up with basically the same thing we have now, without the “local” channels.

3. The “Local” Channels Could Produce Local and Canadian Content

Here’s an ingenious idea: HOW ABOUT BROADCASTING SOME ORIGINAL CONTENT! (sorry about the caps).

Why can’t we produce some interesting content? We have the technology. It’s not as expensive as it used to be. Even the average Joe can produce something more interesting than what the “local” stations pass for Canadian content. Our current situation is an embarrassment.

Why do Canadians always make themselves second class citizens when it come to Entertainment and the Arts? We have some brilliant Canadian minds here. Let’s start investing in them. Canadians need to be proud: We’re not so prudish and not so middle of the road like our American counter parts. Yet we suffer from low self-esteem and let jock man keep talking when we have something interesting to say.

What’s Still Good

In spite of some of my negativity towards the networks, I must applaud the following:

- some of the national networks like Discovery and Show Case for good Canadian Content

- the Cable Companies and the CBC for CPAC

- the Cable Companies for public access television

- the CBC for interesting talk radio that is not laced with right-wing rhetoric

That’s my opinion, for what it’s worth. Give me a penny.

Radical Thinkers and the Arts since 1909

Thursday 26 November 2009, 18.30–20.00

On the 100th anniversary of the Futurism Manifesto, join critical thinkers Terry Eagleton, Simon Critchley, Kate Soper, Eyal Weizman, and chair Alberto Toscano in exploring a century of radical thinking and the arts – and debating what lies ahead. The recent Futurism exhibition at Tate Modern reminds us of an age when politics and aesthetics were densely interwoven in an explosive rejection of the past. This distinguished panel will assess the legacy of modernism to ask how today’s radical thinkers might understand the role of the arts at the dawn of the twenty first century and beyond.

Speakers:

Terry Eagleton is Professor of English Literature at the University of Lancaster and author of Literary Theory: An Introduction, The Illusions of Postmodernism and Reason, Faith, and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate.

Simon Critchley is Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York and author of The Book of Dead Philosophers, On Humour and Continental Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction.

Kate Soper is a Professor in the Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages at London Metropolitan University and author of To Relish the Sublime: Culture and Self-realisation in Postmodern Times and What Is Nature?: Culture, Politics and the Non-Human.

Eyal Weizman is an architect and Director of the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths College, University of London and author of Hollow Land: Israel’s Architecture of Occupation.

Chair: Alberto Toscano, editor of Historical Materialism, lecturer in sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London and author of The Theatre of Production: Philosophy and Individuation Between Kant and Deleuze.

In collaboration with Verso to coincide with the of launch of Set 4 of Verso’s Radical Thinkers series.

My main goal for the week long intensive was to choreograph to popular music and to fuse dance with the circus arts. The 3 works had to be created quickly and for me had to be accessible and well communicated to any type of viewer. My biggest challenge was not the time limitation but the fact that I was working with inexperienced talent in their formative stage as circus performers. I needed to remind myself that they were not professionals nor were they dancers and we were still within an educational institution. My expectations were lowered on their dancing abilities however my demand for hard work were never compromised. With a few exceptions, the maturity level was very high. I generally ignored or did not use those who were not generous or open to working ‘professionally’.

The results were quite fun. Got most of them ‘dancing’ and managed to make some very interesting work with these folks. It was a hard but satisfying exercise for both the creators and the performers. I tried to get them out of their comfort zone by choreographing dance while still respecting and integrating their particular art forms within each of the 3 works. I highly enjoyed the experience at l’Ecole de Cirque as it confirmed that creation with hungry artists is always satisfying. The kids were great and it was a blast to discover other possibilities of moving. It was damn fun and can’t wait to see a copy of the video.

http://speckyboy.com/2009/11/04/50-examples-of-effective-uses-of-typography-within-web-design/

I have found these to be some beautiful examples of websites that uniquely used typography as a form of design and expression. In my opinion, whoever said to not judge a book by it’s cover… was wrong. I find myself unable to concentrate on the material inside if the material outside can’t even catch my immediate attention. Even when we say we don’t judge based upon the looks of something, we always do. No one person is so non-materialistic that they settle for second best 100% of their life. We always want more, and design is one thing that consistently can give us that push. It is as individualistic as anything can be, and it sets our imagination free. These websites have captured their brand and self image in a positive, successful manner than makes readers want to look more, to feel the site, to gain from it’s expression… 50 examples of effective typography implemented within web design.

Also, note the website on which this article is located: SpeckyBoy. This is an EXCELLENT source for designers and people interested in typography. It’s an online design magazine with frequently updated articles and free downloads. Some categories of interest include: logos, graphic design, photography, css, fireworks, and photoshop.

This is a nice gallery of nanotech images from New Scientist. Here’s the description from the series, “Chemist George Whitesides has collaborated with MIT and Harvard photographer-in-residence Felice Frankel to produce No Small Matter, a book of images of the micro and nanoworld.”

From the first image, my favorite:

Sun catchers

This is a close-up of the top side of a photovoltaic solar cell. The cell converts the energy from the sun’s photons into electrical energy by taking advantage of the photo-electric effect. This cell is made of a wafer of crystalline silicon.

Light is absorbed by the wafer and creates charge that is collected by silver conductor lines, shown in the image as the gold-coloured strip. The cell is coated with silicon nitride which acts as an anti-reflective surface, preventing light energy from bouncing away and giving the cell its blue-violet colour.

Rather than attaching solar panels to our roofs, recent research suggests that in the future we could paint solar cells on to our houses, removing the need to rely on expensive silicon wafers.

Walking round the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, we came across this exhibition:

People are often telling us we need to ‘grow up’ and ‘act our [supposedly very old] age’, yet in terms of how we see the world, its potential and possibilities, we often feel we’re still teenagers. How can people who are not in their 20s or 30s possibly qualify as ’emerging’? Well, this theme may be the answer. The notion of being ’emerging elders’ appealed to us as soon as we saw it. And of course we are not alone, by a long way. Emergence doesn’t automatically correlate with age. Meeting with Robert Banks in Sydney the other day, he commented that for some of the people he meets, it looks like ‘25 is the new 70′ in terms of young people’s outlooks (specifically, some Christian young people), which for him (now at 70) looks like they’re going backwards. We recall Lesslie Newbigin saying something along the same lines twenty years ago, which shows how old we really are – and gives us something to live up to as well. Growing old and staying young is a great adventure.
