Again, we are very happy to host the Festival of Trees on Living Trees Blog. For issue number 41 we suggested the theme “If I were a tree.” My idea with this was hopefully to explore new ways of seeing and understanding based on those aspects of trees we most admire. Putting ourselves in another’s place is one of the most difficult things we can do, but simply making the attempt can reveal a new dimension of values, increasing one’s capacity for respect, care and love. Through this practice we become capable of understanding the subtleties and complexities that expand our feeling for the world around us!

We received 15 entries and expressions for Festival 41 – some not directly related to the theme but still bringing knowledge and views about our friends, the trees – and I’m delighted to share them with you! This time we received a number of entries from Brazil, so I will start with them.

On an October afternoon here in Sao Paulo, as I was returning from a meeting, a man sat down beside me on the subway and introduced himself as the Happy Poet: John Alves, who I’d never heard of until that moment. As he sat down, he handed me a poem he’d written, and I then quickly invited him to write a poem for this festival! Our conversation only lasted for two or three stations, but resulted in a very creative, inspired exchange, as you can see from his poem below:

Thank you a lot HAPPY POET – JOÃO ALVES for your collaboration with the Festival! In addition, I invited several other people, and two friends, lovers of nature and trees, answered the call for the Festival presenting their views. Priscilla from Jundiai City, on her blog Green Eyes, presents us with beautiful photos and a look at the plenitude of tree-beings.

Rounding out the group of entries from Brazil we have a tree-poetic piece from the artist Claudia Fini Martins, who is also responsible for our Living Watercolored cards found at Living Trees virtual store. Inspired by an AROEIRA, she painted this watercolor live-poetry and completed the composition with a collage of Fernando Pessoa’s poem, The SCAFFOLDING – strong and forceful. The lines were placed from top to bottom, so that the poem was read into the lap of the tree in contact with the ground.

April 2008, I am very happy to host the Festival of Trees, which facilitates the meeting, exchange of information and views from those who are passionate about, interested in, motivated by, or simply admirers of trees! For the first time, the festival is hosted by a blog from a language other than English and I promise to try, with my basic knowledge, to generate a fully bilingual edition directly from Sao Paulo, Brazil! Of course, for this to happen I count on the super-special help of our colleague, Dave Bonta – one of the founders of the Festival – which will make the text in English much more fluent! So let’s begin, because there are very interesting things to come…

The first submission I received for the festival came directly from India. Vinay Raj sent the link for his very motivating blog “C’mon let’s plant a tree!” In addition to local news, we can find several links to socio-environmental campaigns and other great references for botanic and tree sites.

Anthony McCune from Ohio, USA gives us a present with his post on a beautiful house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The images show us the care that this great architect took in choosing where to plant the oak trees in order to create a cozy environment.

The post “Who will die?” from Gravity´s Rainbow addresses a very interesting study conducted on the species of trees more resistant to drought. Why do they survive? What possibilities and future outcomes might these surveys suggest? For example, knowing that some species are weaker and wouldn´t survive a drought leads us to predict that species of animals dependent on that tree would also be extirpated.

Mary Farmer wrote this month about the discovery of Nance Macho, the only representative tree of its family in Panama! An oceanographer for some years, Mary now devotes her time to botanical research in the Panamanian savanna. We can all learn a lot from her in-depth research on the species there.

Pedro Nuno from the Portuguese blog The Green Shadow submitted a post about The Most Beautiful Street in the World, which happens to be here in Brazil — more specifically in Porto Alegre — and believe it or not… I got to know this street from him! I was very happy with this news and the residents of Gonçalo de Carvalho St. also sent along their link, at Pedro’s suggestion, telling the story of how they got together and successfully fought to have the street designated as a place of Historical, Cultural and Ecological Significance for Porto Alegre!

Poemas, poesias, haicais…

An ailing coconut tree and a very efficient natural remedy, which uses Neem as one of the main ingredients, is the basis of the fascinating post Coconut Medicine from under the fire star. Once all the ingredients are assembled, the “doctor” is called to oversee the preparation and do the implementation of the drug in Coconut Medicine 2. Climbing over 30 feet makes a real show!
