(AFP Photo)

As more bodies were pulled out of shallow graves following Monday’s election-linked killings in the lawless south of the country, Arroyo insisted she was committed to tracking down those responsible.

“This is a supreme act of inhumanity that is a blight on our nation,” presidential spokesman Cerge Remonde said on the ABS CBN television network.

“The president has vowed that the perpetrators will not find the way to escape justice.”

Police earlier said the top suspect in the massacre was Andal Ampatuan Jnr, a member of Arroyo’s ruling coalition and the son of a powerful regional politician who has helped secure votes for the president in previous elections.

“According to the initial reports, those who were abducted and murdered at Saniag were initially stopped by a group led by the mayor of Datu Unsay,” national police spokesman Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina said.

Ampatuan Jnr is the mayor of Datu Unsay and his father of the same name is the governor of Maguindanao province, a lawless part of the strife-torn Mindanao island where the massacre took place.

However, two days after the massacre, authorities indicated an arrest of Ampatuan Jnr was not imminent.

Speaking on DZMM radio, Espina said investigators still needed to speak with witnesses before they could secure a court order for the arrest of the suspects.

Asked if Ampatuan Jnr would be arrested, Remonde replied: “I will not telegraph our punches”.

But he said Arroyo had delivered a message to the Ampatuan clan, which has its own private army, not to obstruct the police investigation.

The massacre occurred after about 100 Ampatuan gunmen allegedly abducted a convoy of aides and relatives of a rival Maguindanao politician, Esmael Mangudadatu, plus a group of journalists.

The victims were abducted as they were travelling in a six-vehicle convoy to nominate Mangudadatu as the opposition candidate for governor in next year’s elections. He was not in the convoy.

They were shot a short time later at close range, some with their hands tied behind their backs, and dumped or buried in shallow graves on a remote farming road close to a town bearing the Ampatuan name.

The death toll rose from 46 to 52 after six more bodies were pulled out of the graves on Wednesday, according to police.

The victims included at least 13 local journalists who had been intending to report on Mangudadatu’s governorship nomination, making Monday’s killings the deadliest single attack on the media in history.

Ampatuan Snr had been grooming his son to take over as governor of Maguindanao province, and the victims’ relatives have alleged the Ampatuans organised the murders so that Mangudadatu would not run for governor.

Arroyo on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in Maguindanao and neighbouring Cotabato city, a stronghold of the Ampatuans, amid fears the killings could trigger a clan war.

But instead of ordering tough action against her allies, she sent a special envoy, Jesus Dureza, to the Ampatuan camp on Tuesday to get the clan to pledge its cooperation in an investigation.

The ruling coalition’s candidate for next year’s presidential election, ex-defence secretary Gilberto Teodoro, backed calls for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspects.

“This is a test case. The government should be decisive in going against this group, to arrest the perpetrators no matter who they are, whether they are political allies or not,” he said.

The Philippine Commission on Human Rights chairwoman, Leila De Lima, also called for immediate action by the president.

“I am appealing to President Gloria Arroyo to show political will, for her to show to the public that the investigation by the government is serious,” she told AFP.

Source: SGGP Bookmark & Share

Mr. John Safran, how are you sir?
John Safran: Well, I just spoke to someone from The Age who saw the first two episodes and said she thought the show was outrageous. Apparently she was really disturbed by it. It’s really weird.

Really? So you didn’t learn from the exorcism episode of your last series?
Clearly not. And this is a bit different to the last three shows which were on SBS, where people had to actively seek me out. Race Relations is going to be on the ABC in the middle of the week, which is kind of like nailing a billboard up in the city square. It’s a much more public space. It’s going to be interesting.

But your stuff is smart and funny. Have you felt compelled to make each series more controversial than the one before?
Not really. They just end up there. Race Relations actually started out as a book, which evolved into a TV show. While researching the book, I went out and did a few interviews, during which I obviously humiliated myself, and each time I was like, “Why aren’t I filming this?” For some reason when you’re being filmed it’s way less humiliating because people just assume you’re doing it for television. Whereas if you just have your notepad and you stand up at a public talk, people really think you have a screw loose. Anyway, when you start editing something like this, you kind of just have to go with the strong stuff. You know what I mean?

Surely that’s what people want to see. So, for this show you turned black, female, and elephant man. How did that go for you?
Well the black episode was one of the first things we filmed and we pulled it off so we were really excited for the rest of the show. When I was growing up and had my hip-hop posse, my friends used to tell me to stop acting black. The idea was to really experience what it’s really like to walk in someone else’s shoes so I go undercover in Barack Obama’s hometown, Chicago.

Were you a convincing black man?
Yeah, well, we realized pretty quickly that it’s pretty easy to make someone look black for camera but that it’s much more difficult to look black to another black person who’s standing five centimeters away from you. We tried everything from really low rent stuff, which didn’t work at all, so finally ended up with the guys who won the academy award for prosthetics on Benjamin Button. One of them flew to Australia and took a face cast and did his thing. It started off as a five-minute story but because it ended up being so expensive, we made a bigger deal of it and it became an entire episode. Which made it cheap.

Sounds great.
Yeah, well I actually failed. I think that’s probably why comedy is so screwed up – people who can’t be funny are trying to be funny and people who are actually funny are out there trying to prove what artists they are by being bleak and dark. With this show, I just wanted it to be funy – that’s it. As it turns out though there’re some really awkward moments and towards the end it kind of becomes unwatchable.

In one episode you get crucified, which is pretty insane.
Yeah, I was thinking that this is why I’m fucked in the head and never get anywhere. As most people get more successful and more shows, they use their leverage to try to get more money or a better deal or whatever. I, however use my leverage to try to do things they wouldn’t let me do last time. For example, I didn’t have the leverage in the town during Vs God to be nailed to a cross but now that I’m older and have my own production company, I can sit there and threaten people with not going with their network or whatever if they don’t let me do stuff on the show. It makes no sense. I use my leverage to fuck myself over.

But do you come to any grand realizations?
I’m not going to give that away but I do think that whatever shit goes down when it’s on air it’ll all ultimately be OK because it all leads to something. It’s actually full of pathos and might throw people around a bit but it’s all for a reason. The good thing is that I’m going to have a copy in my hand so regardless of what happens, I plan to get it out there.

As a Jewish guy, if you don’t marry a Jewish girl, what would your mum’s preference of partner be in terms of race, religion, and sex? A gay, non-Jewish guy presumably being at the bottom of the list.
Ha, yeah I guess after that would come a gay Jewish man, then Arab and Persian. I guess a non-Arab Muslim is probably better than an Arab Muslim. Then you get up to Asian. But then maybe it’s better just to go with someone who no one’s going to ask questions about. You could argue that at least an Arab girl could pass as Jewish, whereas if you bring an Asian into the room, you’re really making an announcement. Just watch the show maybe.

Is this going to make it easier for you to get girlfriends do you think?
No, not only will I not be able to get a girlfriend, I’m not going to be able to make eye contact at anyone at parties. It’s just going to be too embarrassing.

Cheers mate…..

thanks to the vibe crew for putting this together!

Back when I was working with subversion, I was at one point writing a hook script to check that a gi

Back when I was working with subversion, I was at one point writing a hook script to check that a given commit was good. You know the kind of stuff: Have you added a comment, are you trying to change a tag, are you trying to hack the server, have you brushed your teeth, and so on.

It’s a fairly obvious thought when you’re in that environment to think … is this going to build? After all, here’s the perfect opportunity find out, and if it doesn’t we can just reject the commit and it’ll be as if it never happened – no-one else gets affected, nothing bad polluting the trunk, better chance of having a 1:1 workitem/changeset ratio, it’s all good.

It turns out that this idea is called gated checkin, and it’s available as a checkbox in TFS 2010. But despite my glowing report, I’m yet to be convinced of gated checkin as something that isn’t just a nuisance, compared with CI. I rejected it on the subversion side of things because our builds always took forever, and whilst a build was being checked, no-one else could commit. Not only that, but because I used a single repository for everything, it meant that no-one else could commit even if they were on a different project entirely. Thinking about this differently, this could be the best argument I’ve found for using individual repositories per project with subversion.

It’s much the same argument with TFS – the checkin is held open until the build and any other checks you use have completed, preventing anyone else from doing anything commit related. I mean they can’t even resolve any commit conflicts reliably, because they may or may not need to incorporate the changes that are being tested. This means your builds must be quick. This means they must be small. This means the projects must be small. Allegedly gated checkin becomes a requirement when you have >~60 people on a branch, as just by the laws of statistics, the branch is more often broken than healthy. Having 60 people on a single branch doesn’t sound small to me. If you’ve got 60 developers checking in every 2 hours, that’s a commit every 2 minutes. That’s your timeslot before your start impinging on developer productivity.

I’m not sure what the solution to this is. Apparently gated checkin is the solution to world hunger. Personally I prefer the idea of having less people on a single branch and merging more. Split the project into components and release them separately. Anything really. But I guess I’m going to have to try these before I can make a decision for sure. After all, they’re easy to setup and take out. If the builds are fast enough, they’ll certainly make the branch history cleaner, and surely that’s a good thing.

One of my main bugbears with source control is knowing where my changes are. I don’t mean just havin

One of my main bugbears with source control is knowing where my changes are. I don’t mean just having a good idea, I mean actual empirical evidence that I can look at and easily convince someone else that changes have been moved from the project branch to trunk, and from trunk to release.

Now this is always possible by looking at the code, but that just doesn’t scale – it can easily take days to work out what’s in a particular release, and by the time that’s finished the world will have changed anyway. We need something high level, something that says this branch contains these changes from these locations. TFS goes some way to addressing this with a nifty visualisation in the new 2010 suite. Given a changeset, you can follow the merge history of that changeset across the branches of your project.

This is excellent if you’re looking at a particular change and want to know where it is. You can easily see that it has been flowed in the right direction, and can see how much of a mess you’re getting yourself into. This visualisation also handles partial merges by showing them in yellow for the time that they’re partial (hopefull they’ll get fully merged after a while, letting them go green).

If you want to know where a particular change has made it to, this view is perfect. In my experience, however, we rarely want to know where a single changeset has gone, we’re much more interested in where a workitem has gone. Although we’d all love to think that there’s a 1:1 correspondence between workitems and changesets, it just aint gonna be so, regardless of how you work. MS are working on this, of course, although I’m not holding my breath for the initial 2010 release.

The other problem is again one of scale. Whilst this view is very useful, one thing that we need for a release is a report on all the items which have been merged into this release from trunk (and conversely, what’s missing). Ideally this should be at a workitem level as well, but a changeset level report is a good start. Subversion has this with its mergeinfo command. Tortoisesvn shows each revision and greys out the ones that have already been merged. Git has an incredibly detailed view of all the changes that were made on parallel branches. I’m not sure if that’s any use in telling you what’s missing, but it’s wonderful for knowing what’s in. These all work on the changeset level, however.
I haven’t found anything equivalent in TFS yet. The information is available in TFS, so it’s likely trivial to build it manually.

All of this tracking is of no use, however, if your changesets mean nothing more than it was Friday night and were preparing for the weekend. Also, a commit comment of “some changes” isn’t going to be useful for working out which changesets you’re looking for. If you’ve never felt the need to be disciplined in making a changeset be a single unit of functionality before, perhaps this can inspire you as to why it might be a good idea.

Some of you may know that I’m a strong advocate for using some of the more flexible branching strate

Some of you may know that I’m a strong advocate for using some of the more flexible branching strategies available to us developers, given the advances in source control over the last 20 years. TFS 2010 is adding in some extra branching support that should make this more compelling.

In short, TFS 2010 knows about branches explicitly. That is, you tell it “this folder is a branch” and it can track things around in a nice visual form. You start out with marking your trunk/mainline branch, then branching from that. Visual studio tracks what gets branched where and can show you the relationships between branches in a nice, simple diagram.

This shows the logical structure of the branches. Here we can see that 3 branches came from Dev and an additional branch was made from “Brian”. The logical structure shows where branches came from and, conversely where changes need to be merged back to. The actual meaning is branch dependent of course – release branches would have changes merged into them from trunk, development branches would have their changes merged into trunk.

The physical structure is where the branches are located in Team Explorer and will be completely different to the logical structure. The recommendation is that folders are made to hold branches of a common type, so that the physical structure tells you the reason for the branches existence, such as private branches, feature work, stable release branches etc. Each branch can have a description, which is useful for finding out detail about an individual branch, but grouping them in folders makes sense.

This screenshot shows the branch structure in physical form. Notice that branches look different to folders. Also notice that here the Dev and QA branches are siblings in the physical structure, where as in the logical diagram QA is a child of Dev.

Branches can be made quite easily by dragging and dropping from the logical diagram or right clicking a branch on the physical diagram and choosing “Create new branch”. The whole branch process has been streamlined as well. Apparently old TFS checked out all the files onto your machine and waited for you to check them in as a pending change. HUGE waste of time, effort and bandwidth. Now it just makes the branch on the server and you can check it out when you see fit.

Today is finally the design review of our last project in Design 102, project ‘…for the…’ External panels (those professors from UITM and PAM) were invited to crit and comment on our works. All of the invited panels are Malays, and our presentation will be one to two panels (with one lecturer on side).

Kinda nervous, because it is the first time I am presenting my architecture work to external panels. Last time have done this kind of presentation before, but there is nothing much to learn from that time which is Foundation year. This time, really learn a lot from the panels too, eventhough I might be disagree with some of the opinions by them, since everyone will have different thoughts.

I am among the earliest one to present, trying to present it without showing any sign of nervous…able to do that successfully, but the panels said that my design is not that successfully, but with effort, because my project is done in large-scale, having to care on so many spaces in my design. Anyway, I’m satisfied with my performance today, and my design basically gets the approval from my lecturers. Everyone have different thoughts…this is what I can say, again!

There is one thing that I don’t agree much with the panels, that my design is not appropriate in terms of materials (glass) and proportion (those golden mean). Huh, they expect me to study on ancient Greek work of Golden Mean and Proportion so much. I actually think that glass is appropriately used in my design. Again, every person have different ideas! They have to accept my ideas, since this is my design…

Exhausted day, need to bring whole box of models and development sketches and the giant presentation board to classroom in early morning, and bring it back to my car, so far from the campus. Ahh, still got the Archicad assignment to be completed.

These are pictures of some of the boards presented today:

Some boards are really cool with computer graphic drawings, manual killer drawings, layout…models are nice…overall, almost all are good.

Spurs were only 1-0 up at the break, thanks to a goal by Peter Crouch before fellow England striker Defoe ran riot after half-time with Aaron Lennon, an own-goal by Chris Kirkland and Niko Kranjcar’s 90th minute effort adding to the North London club’s tally.

Although Defoe seemed certain to grab the headlines for his five goal return, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said Lennon had made a key contribution to this thumping win.

“I thought we started really bright, we had 25 minutes where we really got off after them in the first half before they came back into it,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“We came in at half-time and said we had to get back to how we started, pressing them all over the park, and we decided to work them and made the opportunities and took them.

“Their keeper (Chris Kirkland) made some great saves as well.

“Lennon is a fantastic talent, anybody would have had a hard day with him in that sort of form. He deserved that goal at the end.”

Speaking about Defoe, Redknapp added: “For Jermain to get five goals was an outstanding performance.

“Yesterday (Saturday) in training he looked so sharp and I felt if he could carry that into the game he would be a real handful.

“You don’t get too many nines in the Premier League, it’s a bad day for Roberto Martinez but he’ll come back even stronger.”

Wigan manager Martinez added: “We finished the first half very strongly and looked like a team who were going to dictate things.

“But we have ourselves to blame for the goals we conceded and after that you are climbing a mountain.”

Tottenham’s haul was all the more impressive as Redknapp decided to rest striker Robbie Keane after the Republic of Ireland international’s involvement in the controversial midweek World Cup playoff loss to France.

Wigan could have been forgiven for agreeing to put this match back by 24 hours following the international break as their defence took a pummelling.

Spurs went ahead in the ninth minute when Crouch headed home a cross from Lennon.

Kirkland then had to be alert to deny both Lennon and former Wigan favourite Wilson Palacios.

Defoe, who hit the crossbar before half-time, led a rout in the second half with a hat-trick in seven minutes.

From Lennon’s cross, he got in front of Titus Bramble to shoot into the roof of the net before he slotted home at the far post after the Wigan defence failed to cut out Palacios’s centre.

Paul Scharner then pulled one back for Wigan although the Austrian midfielder clearly used his hand to control the ball before shooting past Heurelho Gomes.

Tottenham protested to referee Peter Walton but barely a minute later Defoe had his hat-trick as Spurs’ three-goal lead was restored when he volleyed in Lennon’s cross.

Lennon himself added a fifth after Crouch did well to find the winger in a congested penalty area.

Defoe grabbed his fourth 21 minutes from time by scoring off the post after latching on to Vedran Corluka’s through ball and had a fifth late on when he shot through Kirkland’s legs.

David Bentley’s free-kick then appeared to hit both the bar and Kirkland before going in and, in the closing seconds, Kranjcar’s shot went in off the woodwork.

Source: SGGP Bookmark & Share

With the official toll standing at 29 dead and 250 rescued, officials arrived at Karimun to try to piece together what caused the latest in a litany of ferry disasters in Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands.

The 147-tonne vessel’s capacity was 273 passengers and crew, but local police said more than 400 people could have been on board. Two survivors told AFP its decks were packed with undocumented passengers.

Captain Johan Napitupulu rejected the allegations and said he had no warning he was sailing into a massive storm when he left Batam island on Sunday morning.

“The weather was fine when we left Batam port. There was no sign of rain and we also didn’t get any warning from anybody saying the weather could turn bad at sea,” he told AFP.

“About half an hour later the weather suddenly turned really, really bad. The waves were higher than two metres (six feet), the winds and currents were strong.”

The captain said the crew had done all it could to arrange lifeboats and life-jackets for the terrified passengers.

“The ferry was sinking fast, front first. Within 27 minutes it was totally submerged… There was panic, everyone was screaming,” Napitupulu said.

Survivor Amir Azli, a 56-year-old high-school teacher, estimated more than 350 people were on board, many with heavy suitcases as they set off to spend time with their families ahead of a Muslim holiday on Friday.

“I saw at least 50 people without tickets sitting on the top deck of the ferry… It wasn’t just the bad weather,” he said as he recovered in Tanjung Balai on Karimun.

“The ferry was overloaded so of course I’m angry that the ferry operator broke the safety rules and people had to die because of that.”

Another survivor, 25-year-old factory worker Zulfitri added: “The ferry was overcrowded with people and things. On the first floor there were people standing because they had no seats”.

“They didn’t tell us there was a problem but only asked us to stay calm. We only realised we were in trouble when we saw the ferry sinking and that’s when we demanded life-jackets,” she said.

Karimun-based Navy Lieutenant-Colonel Edwin said the boat’s manifest listed 242 passengers and crew including 15 children, indicating some of the passengers were undocumented.

Heavy seas were preventing navy divers from finding the wreck to determine if anyone was trapped below decks, he said.

Ferry disasters are common in Indonesia despite repeated official promises to tighten and enforce safety regulations.

Up to 335 people were killed when a heavily overloaded ferry sank off Sulawesi island in January. In December 2006 a ferry went down in a storm off the coast of Java, killing more than 500 people.
