Once again, the civilian world has taken something from the military and hosed it up. I am referring to the acronym “ASAP”. This stands for “As Soon As Possible”, which usually translates into “NOW”. It is pronounced “AAA-SAP” The “AAA” rhymes with “lay” and the “SAP” rhymes with “lap”. Two syllables. You don’t spell it all out, “AAA-ESS-AAA-PEE”. 

  
This is just stupid. The whole idea behind substituting an acronym for a phrase is that it is quicker and easier to say. “As soon as possible” is six syllables. “AAA-SAP” is two. Big savings, right? But spelling it out “AAA-ESS-AAA-PEE” is four syllables, which pretty much defeats the purpose of making it an acronym in the first place.

If an acronym is able to be pronounced like a word, you generally do so, not spell it out. NATO, for example is “NAY-TOW”, not “EN-AAA-TEE-OH”. The M249 Squad Automatic Weapon is the “SAW”, not the “ESS-AAA-DOUBLE-U”. The Navy abbreviates “Commander in Chief, Pacific” to CINCPAC, pronounced “SINK-PACK”, not “CEE-I-ENN . . . ” oh, hell, I’m not going to spell that all out. You get the idea.

The same goes for “UFO”. This is pronounced “YEW-FO”; two syllables, not spelled out.

And while I’m on the subject of pronunciation, how in the hell do they get “LEN-UCKS” out of “Linux”? The man’s name is Linus (“LIE-NUSS”), so the “Lin” should be pronounced “LINE”. The operating system is pronounced “YEW-NICKS”, so the “ix” should be just like it looks, “ICKS”. This gives you “LINE-ICKS”, and that is the way a number of people say it. To pronounce it “LEN-UCKS”, the man’s name would have to be “LEN-NUSS” and the operating system would have to be “YOU-NUCKS”. “YOU-NUCKS” (eunuchs), my dear boy, are those big, castrated guys that guard harems. If you claim to be experienced with “YOU-NUCKS”, then are you talking about computer software or some kind of weird homosexual acts?

As Soon As Possible – That is a very vague answer to “When do you need it completed?” This can mean different things to different businesses. One sign shop interprets ASAP to mean 1-2 hours because their customer will come back later that day. Another less hectic shop considers this to be 1-2 days.

So why is it important to be more specific? A couple of reasons. One is rush charges. Anything done in a short time span will usually result in a rush charge. Why pay for a rush charge, when your interpretation of ASAP really meant 6-24 hours and you did not need it that quickly?

The other reason is uncertainty. What if I interpret ASAP to mean later that same day and you really did want it done in 1 hour? Now you’re in a bind because that vector file is not in your inbox when you thought it would be.

Solution: Please be more specific in the number of hours or days before you want your vector file completed. It could save you some money.

Kecelakaan lagi. Kali ini terjadi kebakaran, di Medan, di sebuah tempat hiburan. Jumlah korban tewas cukup banyak, sampai 20 orang. Apa yang menyebabkan banyak orang tewas pada peristiwa kebakaran itu? Tentu saja api.

Tapi, kebakaran itu sebenarnya sudah sangat sering terjadi. Jadi seharusnya sudah ada perencanaan desain bangunan untuk mengantisipasinya, paling tidak untuk meminimalkan jumlah korban tewas jika terjadi kebakaran pada bangunan tersebut.

Sayangnya, pada peristiwa kebakaran di Medan itu, salah satu sebab banyaknya korban kabarnya adalah karena tidak adanya tangga kebakaran, yaitu tangga darurat yang dikhususkan sebagai jalan keluar bila sebuah bangunan mengalami kebakaran. Beritanya ada di Okezone:

Banyaknya korban yang tewas dalam peristiwa kebakaran pusat hiburan malam M City di kawasan Bundaran Majestyk, Jalan Gatot Subroto Medan, semalam diduga karena tidak adanya tangga darurat pada bangunan itu.

Menurut informasi yang beredar di lapangan, jalan keluar dari sumber kebakaran di lantai tiga gedung itu hanya melalui satu lift. Selain itu, sama sekali tidak ada tangga darurat menuju lantai dua. Sedangkan, daya tampung lift itu sendiri juga terbatas. Padahal saat kejadian, ratusan pengunjung sedang memadati pusat hiburan malam itu.

Awalnya sebelum muncul kobaran api, tiba-tiba listrik di gedung tersebut padam total. Kemudian terdengar ledakan kecil di salah satu ruangan karaoke televisi (KTV). Akibatnya, suasana menjadi kacau balau. Para pengunjung pun berhamburan dan berdesakan untuk menyelamatkan diri.

Sedangkan asap dan api semakin mengepul. Korban pun mulai berjatuhan akibat kekurangan oksigen dan menghirup asap karbon dari kebakaran. Makanya sebagian besar korban ditemukan di lantai tiga gedung dan terjebak di dalam lift.

Tak adanya tangga darurat ini tentu saja telah melanggar aturan. Namun hingga saat ini, belum ada keterangan resmi dari pihak terkait. Penjabat Wali Kota Medan Rahudman Harahap sendiri tidak memberikan tanggapan apapun saat dijumpai di RSU Pirngadi Medan, Sabtu (5/12/2009) dini hari.

Sementara itu, pada saat kejadian ratusan warga Medan dan sekitarnya tampak memadati lokasi kejadian hingga tengah malam. Sebagian besar mereka mengetahui adanya kebakaran dari pemberitaan di televisi.

Jadi Ingat…

Jadi ingat, sama proyek perencanaan sebuah bangunan. Hehehe… gini-gini saya pernah ngikutin sebuah perencanaan bangunan loh…

Ceritanya, pada saat perencanaan bangunan toko dua lantai, perancang bangunan a.k.a arsitek membuat gambar tangga kebakaran, yang memang sudah menjadi syarat keamanan bangunan, dan disampaikan kepada bos yang punya bangunan.

Tapi, si bos rupanya kurang suka dengan rencana itu. Dia bilang, buat apa bikin tangga kebakaran segala, mengurangi space aja. Toh, dia pikir, kebakaran juga sangat jarang terjadi. Ruang untuk tangga kebakaran itu rupanya dinilai sebagai pemborosan biaya.

Si perancang bangunan ngotot harus ada tangga kebakaran, dengan segala penjelasannya. Si bos pun ngotot. Sampai pada akhirnya, bagusnya, si perancang menyampaikan surat tertulis yang menyatakan bahwa dia sudah menyampaikan rancangan dan persyaratan tangga kebakaran, namun ditolak oleh pemilik bangunan, sehingga bila suatu saat terjadi kebakaran, perancang tidak bertanggung jawab terhadap akibatnya.

Karena disodori dan diminta menandatangani surat itu, yang dibuat bermaterai segala, akhirnya si bos mengalah. Jadi deh dirancang tangga kebakaran itu, dan benar dibangun, walau pun akhirnya ukurannya dibuat kecil, tangga melingkar seperti ular, seperti yang biasa dibuat untuk tangga jemuran saja.

Penting Nggak Penting

Sepertinya kebanyakan kita ini memang hanya terpaku sama yang namanya ekonomi, biaya, keuntungan material, dan sebangsanya. Bahkan aspek keamanan atau keselamatan seringkali cuma menjadi nomor sekian.

Kalau sudah terjadi musibah, kira-kira sama seperti kejadian gempa dimana masih jarang ada gedung yang dibuat dengan pertimbangan antisipasi gempa, yang ada cuma saling menyalahkan, atau menyesal. Atau jumlah korban dianggap biasa saja, namanya juga kecelakaan a.k.a musibah…???

Milan, Milan, nous en parlons beaucoup…. Mais ce que nous avons oublié de dire, c’est que nous avons fait une découverte majeure : Asap n’est pas qu’une formule de fin de mail à la con, mais aussi un très joli concept store : 104 Corso Garibaldi.

De prime abord on aurait pu croire à une énième boutique pour bobo-bien-pensant-en-mal-de-repères. Tout les codes y sont! Les meubles en carton recyclé, le cuir non traité, le jersey réutilisé, une ambiance design convenue et très douce, bref une boutique labo qui aurait très bien pu accueillir dans sa mezzanine un cycle de conférences sur la mode et le développement durable.
Pourtant, le côté subversif de cette magnifique ceinture/fouet en cuir tressé m’attire pendant que Céline tente de me convaincre que la robe en maille « rouge cuit », bien hors du temps comme elle les aime, est devenue indispensable à sa garde-robe.

On rentre !

Et là, le charme opère… un espace très agréable à visiter, avec une proposition très cohérente autour de la mode et de la maison. Des objets ayant pour point commun d’être tous pensés comme beaux et utiles. Aucune gratuité dans cette démarche qui réconcilie style et fonctionnalité, voire même astuce.
La charmante Delfina, par ailleurs styliste de la marque de maille, nous explique le fonctionnement des six lignes de produits toutes fondées sur une production entraînant le moins de gaspillage possible : tannage végétal du cuir, réutilisation de stocks de jersey pour de la maille très raffinée, fabrication dans des ateliers locaux.
