Jon over at ASBO Jesus, has another great comic up. I like a lot of his work and am the tiniest bit jealous because I can’t draw.

I saw this one and immediately thought of how true it is for people on either side of the debate currently going on in my own denomination.I am reminded of a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer. ”It is not the experience of Christian brotherhood [community], but sure and certain faith in brotherhood [community] that holds us together.” Life Together

May our faith be greater than our differences.

(Well I hope so, I suppose that’s a general assumption. I have to do that here (assume) as blogging is a little more like silent oratory than dialogue, but maybe that’s a good thing, we don’t have to discuss everything, but if you fancy taking me out for a pastry, we can have a discussion, I’m into discussion too, not just monologue. Plimsoles, you can tell I only had 4 hours sleep last night, ramble ramble…zzzzz)

This week has been my week here at Camp. The priest who originally had this week offered it to me when I got my job. It has been a good week, and I’ll have more to say about it later. (And maybe a few pictures.)

Today Jon over at ASBO Jesus posted this:

And I laughed. This was the lesson we tried to tackle Tuesday. And it was hard. Hard to explain, hard to get the kids into. Jon captured it for me.

If you don’t visit his site already, please do. He’s very talented and has a great sense of humor.

Lots to see in the blogosphere today:

Jeff at Losing My Religion is celebrating a birthday today (5/5) and this week has a great, lengthy interview with Michael Frost, missional church guru and co-author (with Alan Hirsch) of the book ReJesus.

Video book promos on YouTube are somewhat mandatory these days if you have a new release; and Tony Morgan’s gives an excellent preview of his book Killing Cockroaches without any hype. (HT: Church Relevance blog)

If you want to re-write the definitive standard for an over-the-top church website, the one for Evangel Cathedral should do it. (HT: Pragmatic Electric blog. Be sure to check out his Apr. 25 post, If Jesus Returns Tonight, Who Will Feed Your Pets? It contains a vital link to Post Rapture Pets.)

Jim Upchurch has renamed his blog, Christ: His Work and His Word. Last weekend he wrote an excellent devotional piece, What if You Knew How and When You Would Die?

Quoted on Bob Hyatt’s blog: “In a faster world, maybe we need a slower church.” ~ Leighton Ford

Two entire chapters of Hebrews. Totally memorized. Shared with passion by Ryan Ferguson. Takes eleven minutes. Google Video link here. (HT: Tony Miano’s blog, Lawman Chronicles)

Finally, on the lighter side; Michael Tait isn’t the newest member of Newsboys after all, as the blog Backseat Writer makes visibly clear in this post. That’s it for today’s links.

Almost every time I do links like this, I always include a link to my unpublished book The Pornography Effect: Understanding for the Wives, Mothers, Daughters, Sisters and Girlfriends, because every day there’s someone new who needs to read it. It’s online and it’s free to read.

Since you asked, I’m currently reading The Blue Parakeet by Scot McKnight (Zondervan) and the revised — 14 years later — edition of The King James Only Controversy by James White (Bethany House). Both deal with the Bible and how we both read and translate it, so I don’t mind reading the two books at once. If you want to make it a hat-trick, you’d have to add How To Choose a Bible Translation For All It’s Worth by Gordon Fee and Mark Strauss (Zondervan).

Today’s cartoon is from ASBO Jesus. Now with over 700 thought-provoking, intriguing, controversial and sometimes frustrating cartoons served. Never a dull moment at that cartoon blog. (It’s Brit-speak for Anti-Social Behavior Order.)

Since this post is a potpourri already, the survey, which follows, is from Christianity Today and reflects that readers of its various websites have a rather secularized view of how we all got here. If you’re going to comment on something here, this would be the one.

How exciting! Lucy has given me a blogging award (along with some of my other favourite bloggers too, I feel very privileged). Here’s what I need to do in exchange:

Post the award on your blog, and link to the person who gave you the award (done that, and please check out Lucy’s lovely blog)

List seven things you love

List seven blogs you love (just seven?)

E-mail or comment on those blogs to let the people know you’ve given them the award

Seven things I love?

My little family – husband and daughter, and the collection of special toys who play such an important part in our four year old’s life that they Had Better Never Get Lost

Following Jesus (although, to be absolutely honest, there are also times when I grind my teeth with frustration at how this works out in my life)

Our church and in particular our small group, not forgetting the friends, near and far, who are extended family and form our daughter’s God Squad (because we couldn’t choose between them when it came to thinking about godparents, they’re all so amazing and special to us)

Painting, drawing, making. I do this in spurts of energy and then long periods elapse where it just gets sidelined…

…but the compensation is I get to work somewhere I can enable children, adults, colleagues to be creative and that is often enough

The sea. It scares me but I love it. Beautiful sandy beaches are great but I’ve almost always lived in proximity to the North Sea, and so it’s the wind-swept dunes and grey thundering waves that make my heart beat a little faster

Books. I love reading, and always have way too many on the go at once, so it takes me ages to get any one book finished unless I’m using it as a ‘comfort read’ when I’m feeling low or as a break from more challenging reads. I confess I also love books as objects (our oversized living room bookcase is testament to that), and am trying hard not to be envious of one of my colleagues who is also a book-lover and collects first editions. THAT would not be good for me. Maybe one day I’ll go and visit her books. I mean her.

Seven blogs I love (Nb. Lucy’s already namechecked a couple of my favourites, so I’ll let them enjoy their awards from her and award seven completely different ones)

I have to mention my husband’s blog (The State That I Am In). It’s a fantastic blog with a strong musical undercurrent. I would love it even if he wasn’t my husband, I promise!

Fourth Space is the blog of one of our small group friends. It’s so thought-provoking, lots of creative and analytical thinking and processing (for both blog author and blog reader).

Have you checked out Coffee Shop Journal? It’s a really great read, reflections on life, faith and more, book reviews and thoughtful applications of lessons learned, and always written with grace and humility.

The Ongoing Adventures of ASBO Jesus is in many ways (for me) the perfect blog. All pictures!!! I don’t know how he comes up with these fresh, funny and often cutting images so frequently. Man or machine?! No machine could be this creative and offer such a human and humane perspective on the world.

Without Wax (I even love the name of this blog) is another thought-provoking look at the world through the eyes of Pete, a pastor at Cross Point Church in Tennessee. He uses video clips and other resources really well, and has got a massive readership judging by the average number of comments each post seems to get. It is also one of the blogs I read that reminds me that there is a cultural difference between our two countries, which I really enjoy being exposed to.

New Life From Old is the blog of another small group friend. He doesn’t post too often, but always has something worth checking out. He’s a scientist and is rigorous in his examination of faith through this lens. He’s really creative in how he works this out in his life and the world (although I don’t think he’d use that word about himself), and deserves massive respect for his engagement with difficult and controversial issues.

Last but not least I’ve just got to mention Wish Jar,which is the blog of author, illustrator and guerilla artist Keri Smith. I LOVE her work, and every time I read her blog I get exposed to something I’ve never come across before.

I hope you enjoy checking these guys out if you’ve not had a look before. (By the way sorry about the weird mix of fonts and sizes, can’t seem to fix it today for some reason. Hope it’s still readable)

One of the regular blogs i go to is ASBO Jesus created by a top bloke and good mate Jon Birch. Jon

One of the regular blogs i go to is ASBO Jesus created by a top bloke and good mate Jon Birch. Jon’s images are really thought provoking and the discussion is prolific on his site. i thoroughly recommend a visit.

Anyway this cartoon has really got under my skin:

Genius Jon Birch strikes again.

The thing that has hit me from this is how i define my self.

For me at least there have been times in my life when i have only found any level of purpose when i perceive that what i am “doing” has any value and therefore I only have self worth when that is the case. When i look at those times i see that my “being” is watered down and pigeon holed into an activity (regardless how worthwhile it is it is not who i am just something i have done).

perhaps it is my desire to be affirmed and praised that i look for my actions to shape who i am.

The reality is that i have to take time out and discover who i am – who has God made me to be. When i am on this journey i am convinced that those things that i do will come out of who i am. This seems to me to be the right way around.

Otherwise, what happens? When we do things we busy our lives and make this define who we are.

So Tom was nearly there when he blogged about ASBO Grannies. “Nearly where?” I hear you

So Tom was nearly there when he blogged about ASBO Grannies. “Nearly where?” I hear you cry (or more likely ’sigh’) nearly at my next blog review.

This time it’s the turn of Asbo Jesus.

I read (or look at…not sure what you do with cartoons) Asbo Jesus to get the old mental cogs going and to sometimes raise a smile. The thing with Asbo is that whether or not I agree with the message behind the cartoon (which in truth is usually left ambiguous) it still usually gets me thinking about a topic or a current event or even a hot potatoe.

I have to be honest, I find the comments…hmmm…what’s the opposite of edifying. So I tend to stay away from there. More often I’ll smirk as Jon Birch (the artist/author) triggers a thought, emotion or memory and challenges my perceptions. Again, I often disagree with what I perceive to be the message behind the cartoon but that doesn’t really matter. He’s not trying to convince me, he’s trying to engage me. That he does, very well.

Sometimes the cartoons are just down right funny, they don’t get me thinking, they just get me laughing.

I suggest you take a look, especially at the earlier ASBO’s as there are some really good ones early on. Don’t expect down the line reformed theology portrayed in picture…you simply wont get it. Do expect to be given a kick up the back side, what ever you believe.

Peace Out.

All cartoons are courtesy of ASBO Jesus’ Jon Birch. Click on the image to view the cartoon in full, and check out all of Jon’s work at http://asbojesus.wordpress.com.

By Amy Sondova ASBO Jesus is a phenomenon not even founder Jon Birch saw coming. His site speaks about controversial issues in the church such as female pastors, cutting, abuse, but Birch uses few words—he lets his cartoons tell the story. And just because they’re animated doesn’t mean they’re so easily dismissed. Millions flock to The Ongoing Adventures of ASBO Jesus each week to check out the latest cartoons, comment on social issues, and find encouragement in the community. Jon, who lives across the pond (that is, in Great Britain) took time out of his work to do a Q&A via e-mail.

Not everyone is familiar with ASBO Jesus, what exactly is your site about?

It’s a blog where I put up cartoons on issues of faith and the church. Sometimes satirical, sometimes empathetic, sometimes ridiculous. Over time, quite a community has grown, so I’ve used the cartoons to stimulate discussion. The purpose of the site is to say things, or bring things up for debate or thought which are often thought yet seldom said (at least not in public) by people of faith. Having said that, the site is open to people who have lost faith, or are still working it all out (Aren’t we all?)

ASBO, itself, is a British term for “anti-social behavior disorder”–why use this term in conjunction with your cartoons?

It was my wife, Clare, who put the two words ‘ASBO’ and ‘Jesus’ together to make a title for the blog. It came out of an interesting conversation we were having about ‘if Jesus were alive today, in our culture, would He be given an ASBO’. We concluded, rightly or wrongly, that He probably would. It seemed to us that He was killed for being what the religious authorities and others deemed ‘troublesome’, so at the very least He would be given an ASBO.

Also, in Britain, ASBO’s generally end up being given to those on the margins of society. Jesus very much identified with those on the margins, so the name ‘ASBO Jesus’ seemed to me to fit the bill beautifully. It is quite possible that the intriguing, possibly controversial, name is one reason why the blog started to get a lot of hits. That is more of a happy accident than a pre-planned thing.

Where did you get the inspiration for the site?

I did cartoon # 1 just shortly after my mother died. Still shocked and beginning the process of coming to terms with a profound (and very sudden) loss, I started cartooning. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it was a welcome distraction, perhaps it was the need to try and say meaningful things.

I do know my mother understood the empathy I have for the marginalized and in the last conversation I had with her she encouraged me to carry on being myself, to carry on loving those who others might judge. These things are hard to put into words, but she told me of a wonderful gay doctor who had been very good with her. She smiled and said, “You would have loved him.” My mum was cool; I’d like my life to do her justice.

There are, of course, many inspirations for the cartoons I do. Not least, these days, the conversations that go on at ASBO. Sometimes it is the conversation that sets the agenda for the next cartoon. I hope my site is a service. I hope it is edifying and helpful. I also hope people find it funny… at least sometimes; I do.

How have your cartoons made a difference in how Christians think?

Wow… I don’t know for sure that they have. I do know that some cartoons have made people think though, because people have said as much on the blog. I would like to think that sometimes the cartoons enable people to think again about things that maybe they thought they knew. There are some subjects that some people have entrenched views on, but hopefully through the cartoons and through the ensuing conversations; there is a way for them to at least hear another view.

I’d like us all to think again really, about all sorts of things. We are, none of us, always right. We are, all of us, sometimes wrong. I am no expert and I don’t pretend to be. My own cartoons often lead me to ponder things that I otherwise might not. I am often learning from the insights and experiences of people who contribute to the comments on the site. Without their input the cartoons would have dried up a while ago.

Why do you think your site has become so popular?

I think it is, in part, because from the start I tried to make sure I joined in with the conversation. To begin with, in the blog’s infancy, I would simply say ‘thank you’ if someone left a comment. Later, when people got brave and started offering views, I would try to engage. Essentially, I like people; and I hoped to make sure people who took time out to respond would feel appreciated.

As I said before, the name of the site has in some ways helped. Also, I have found that very often, people will use an ASBO cartoon on their own blog and link to my site; this has generated a lot of traffic. There are a few very well known bloggers who have referenced my work or used a cartoon; this has flagged the site up for people’s attention.

I also think that people return because they are interested in the comments left. Some of the conversations have been truly inspiring and involving. I am amazed at the willingness of some, to be honest and soul searching. Somehow, although the blog is open to anyone, it seems to have become a safe space to debate, try out arguments, empathize and also to have some fun. Long may it remain that way.

Sometimes though, I think that people enjoy a laugh in the day. ASBO sometimes provides that. Life is often intense and we all need some relief.

What cartoon has been the most controversial to date?

Cartoons on sexuality always stir things up. Sex sells, even in Christian circles. It is interesting that a cartoon which is controversial to one person isn’t at all controversial to another. The one that brought the most comments was a cartoon about gay partnership and marriage. This was too much for some. Although the cartoon was not prescriptive, it was done to elicit a response. However, I have to say, that the majority of the conversation was positive and fruitful. There are some lovely people in the ASBO community who I can trust to set the tone of the conversation. ASBO has become for me as much about their personalities as it is my own.

Christ was controversial. A cartoon site which searches for Christ is bound to be controversial. Some subjects are controversial simply because we are afraid to discuss them. I find this a little ridiculous and try to be open to bringing up anything which I think ought to have an airing. Some of the stronger (maybe not even funny) cartoons I have done are the ones I am most pleased with. A cartoon on self-harming, which I was prompted to do, is still my favourite. I did a lot of heart searching before I posted it, but again, the conversation that ensued told me that this was a subject that really needed to be out of the closet, I was pleased and amazed by the warmth and sensitivity of many of the comments.

When you raise a subject like this, you will probably be affecting those for whom this is an issue. I would only want to have a positive impact; I would want to help the situation, not worsen it. I hope that is what happened. I can only judge by what I read in the comments, but given the amazing variety of people who commented and the things they said, I think it was helpful. I am very pleased I managed to pluck up the courage to post it.

It seems that drawings can communicate a very real message in a less intimidating way, why is this?

Maybe ‘a picture paints a thousand words.’ Maybe they are a bit like parables. Maybe the simple characters are appealing in some way. Maybe it makes a refreshing change for people. Maybe it invites comment and response. I am not entirely sure. I do think though, that a simple picture can encapsulate a lot. Certainly in Britain, there is a strong tradition of cartoon satire; it is a well understood medium of communication. Also, even a simple cartoon can draw you into its world, so you get a different way in to thinking about the world we live in. these are just some thoughts; I don’t really know.

I’m sure there are some days when you get a ton of complaints and you just feel down, why do you keep going?

I’ve not had tons, but I’ve had a few. Complaints don’t really worry me, provided people are complaining about what I’ve said and not what they thought I said. I’m making comments on things, so I guess I’m fair game for those who disapprove. I’ve not censored any comments (except spam). Someone once wrote something like ‘why don’t you do something with your life, like kill yourself or die or something?’ I didn’t even censor that. It’s there still. That sort of silliness is very rare; you can’t let that sort of thing bother you. I do sometimes get down, but that’s me, it’s never anything to do with ABS Jesus. To be honest, I’m my biggest critic.

When you’re not making the ASBO Jesus cartoons, what else do you do?

I make a lot of animations, produce a lot of music and run proost.co.uk with my partner in Christian crime, Jonny Baker. I’m a trustee of a Christian youth charity in my home town. I’m about to start work on a graphic novel with a very good writer friend of mine. And I’m trying to get our home sorted out… it’s looking a little less like a building site than it was a while ago. I have a wonderful wife called Clare, a scruffy dog called Gromit, and am blessed with wonderful friends and family. Right now I’m finishing off a few animations and preparing stuff for Greenbelt (a big UK festival)… I have the Olympics on in the background as I work.
