Kim Peek, the autistic savant who inspired the Oscar-winning film Rain Man, has died, aged 58.

Mr Peek's father Fran said that his son had suffered a major heart attack on Saturday and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, the town where he had spent his life.

Mr Peek was probably the world's most famous savant. Described as a confounding mixture of disability and genius, his astonishing ability to retain knowledge inspired the writer Barry Morrow to write Rain Man, the 1988 movie starring Dustin Hoffman that won four Academy Awards.

Born in 1951 in Salt Lake city, Mr Peek was diagnosed as severely mentally retarded and his parents were advised to place him in an institution and forget about him. Thirty years later, he was classified as a "mega-savant," a genius in about 15 different subjects, from history and literature and geography to numbers, sports, music and dates.

By the time of his death he had committed more than 9,000 books to memory and Nasa made him the subject of MRI-based research, hoping that technology used to study the effects of space travel on the brain would help explain his mental capabilities.

He would read eight books a day, taking just ten seconds to read a page. He could read two pages simultaneously, his left eye reading the left page and his right eye reading the right page.

But throughout his life he still needed 24-hour care. Despite his great mental agility, his motor skills remained limited; he could not perform simple tasks such as dressing himself or combing his hair.

His father Fran became his sole carer after Mr Peek's parent divorced in 1975. Fran Peek said that care of his son was a 30-hour-day, 10-day-a-week job but he did it devotedly, encouraging Kim to make the most of his abilities. But Mr Peek remained deeply introverted. It was not until he met Dustin Hoffman, when the Hollywood star was researching his role in Rain Man, that he could look into another person's face. He was 37 at the time.

Dustin Hoffman advised Fran Peek not to hide his son away. Mr Peek said of that meeting: "Dustin Hoffman said to me, you have to promise me one thing about this guy, share him with the world. And pretty soon it got so that nobody was a stranger to him, they were people, and so was he".

He took Hoffman's advice, putting his son on stage in front of thousands of people for whom he answered, almost always correctly, the most obscure questions they could test him with.

He thrived on his new found fame. Mr Morrow said of him: "I love the way he's flowered, it belies the myth that people don't change, especially people with developmental disabilities."

Four years before his death, Mr Peek said: "I wasn't supposed to make it past about 14, and yet here I am at 54, a celebrity!"

Woo Hoo! I’m IN!! One hour in the pediatrician’s office proved to me that my YEARS of wo

Woo Hoo! I’m IN!!

One hour in the pediatrician’s office proved to me that my YEARS of working as a pediatric nurse for this particular practice may have paid off in more ways than one.

Background: For fifteen years I worked in a large and growing Pediatric practice. This group specialized in well child care as well as sick child care. We had a little ER and were open each night until all the kids were taken care of. Night after night we’d work until 11:00 or later if we had to, making sure all the sickness and illness….stitches, breathing problems and poop issues were resolved. This group of physicians also specializes in ADD/ADHD and other behavioral issues (above and beyond the norm for MDs).

My life as a nurse there was wonderful. Nights spent torturing kids with immunizations and breathing treatments. Inserting catheters, IVs, stitches, throat cultures and ear currettes. Giving out stickers, hugs, kisses and cookies. I spent weekends with a beeper on my belt answering calls from parents worried about their sick babies or out of control teenagers. I saw my own patients for Asthma/allergy teaching. Now…I’m being paid back.

One year, I left that office and went to work for a local non-profit outpatient facility called Philhaven. I worked for a wonderful physician treating kids in intensive group therapies if they weren’t able to mainstream into school. I dispensed meds and advice to children with ODD, ADD, ADHD, PDD-NOS, Autism, Asperger’s, aggression and anger. Then I went back to the relative calm of the crazy pediatric clinic/office/home.

Today I took my son to the pediatrician at the above mentioned “office.” I haven’t been on staff there for nearly four years. The doc. I saw was one I worked with many nights. We like each other and respect each other’s clinical skills. This was the man who diagnosed Colin with SID nearly 6 months ago. Since then, his recommendation to a neuropsych resulted in an Asperger’s diagnosis.

For an hour I sat talking with him. Colin was there and happily played with his Hotwheels cars making tracks and trails over doc’s pants, shoes, folders and computer. Doc complied, occupied and laughed with him. (love this man.) He concurs with the AS diagnosis.

A few weeks ago, he asked me to call a specialist, who also happens to be the psychiatrist I worked with at Philhaven. Apprently this man has recently opened a Center for Autism and Behavioral Disabilities about five minutes from home. I called them (managed to drop that I’d worked for head physician in the past but that didn’t work) and was put on a waiting list. Next POSSIBLE appointment? August, 2010.

I want to go there. Colin NEEDS to go there. I need to go there to find out how best to parent this guy, but August?????? Really?!

So today, pedi doc says…”No meds unless the psych at Philhaven says so. I don’t think we’ve got ADHD, but maybe, maybe some anti-anxiety meds will help with school.”

I say: “But I’ve got to wait until August, cause Psychiatrist (name omitted) has this waiting list. I was hoping that because he knew me and I worked with him, that someone would be impressed and I’d have an ‘in.’ “

Him: “You have an IN with me, girl. This boy needs help now and so do you. I’ll call Mike today and you’ll have an appointment so fast!”

Yeah!!!

High friends in High Places.

Wow! Almost a week since I last posted something on this fine blog! I feel a little starved…like an addict looking for a fix. I have been reading blogs, just not writing anything. So, now I’ll probably spew out more than one post to make up for it.

That’s because…it’s been stimulation overload around here. Way too busy around here planning and prepping for Christmas, all the while trying to maintain order and control in a house ruled by disorder. Problem is, one of our children demands a constant, predictable routine and if he doesn’t get that…well…hell….

It started last week with Christmas anticipation. Everyone’s excited. Colin has no idea why he’s excited except that Christmas is coming (which means presents and “secrets”) and all the lights in people’s yards are really fascinating. There is not much structure to the Kindergarten day lately. Coupled with the fact that his teacher was off for two days and he had a substitute, well, that mean that the tailspin began last week on Monday! If ONE, LITtle thing is out of sync, there is a literal Tailspin. Butt in the air…spinning in circles. Yep.

Here’s the order of things during the week:
1. Wake up at 7:00 a.m.
2. Eat breakfast.
3. Brush teeth.
4. Get dressed (and if you do it all by yourself, you get to mark your chart).
5. NOW you can watch cartoons.
6. 7:55 walk to the bus (but at least five minutes before that, you’ll have to struggle with your coat, hat, gloves, backpack and turning OFF the TV.)

Here’s the order of things on the weekend.
1. Wake up (but don’t get out of bed until someone comes to tell you it’s okay. If you’re awake before ’someone’ then just kick your legs against the wall long enough and loud enough that they’ll hear you and come get you up.)
2. Whatever. Really. Whatever. If it’s Saturday or Sunday, you can do “whatever” until ’someone’ is awake enough to feed you breakfast and then the weekday rules start.

Here’s the thing. We got some snow. About 13″ of snow on Saturday. Hence, we were stuck in the house Saturday and most of Sunday doing ‘nothing’. Well, we made cookies, decorated the tree, listened to Christmas music, played in the snow…whatever the mood dictated. So Colin had a very, very unstructured weekend. RED FLAG number ONE.

This morning…”Two Hour Delay with Modified Kindergarten!” Meaning, he won’t go to school at all. If he did, he’d get there about 15 minutes before I’d have to pick him up for a doctor appointment and he’d miss the rest. Easier to keep him home…maybe.

One hour of kicking, screaming, sobbing, rolling around and generally tantruming (is that a word?) because “It’s Monday! It’s Cycle Day 3! It’s school!!!” He does this thing with any transition that doesn’t go his way. Then he ’shakes it off’ by literally shaking his whole head around and announcing “I’m done now.”

We went on to the doctor’s appointment and on with our day, but what a morning!

When Colin was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, Andy and I had about an hour’s time to talk to the Neuropsychologist who worked with him. More than anything he said or recommended, I remember this part.

He said that Colin will always struggle. It’s our job to teach him how to cope. He will always behave differently, it’s our job to help him know what’s okay and what’s not. It’s our job to discipline his misbehavior, but….BUT…he will always need “an extra measure of grace”.

That hit me hard. No professional psycho anyone had ever suggested that my child was human before now. But this man understood that Colin needed a little leeway…a little grace sometimes. Today was one of those times.

Yep. Yep. Yep.

Do conspiracy theorists mean to suggest with the hundreds of thousands of people involved in all of

Do conspiracy theorists mean to suggest with the hundreds of thousands of people involved in all of this, everyone would be able to keep this secret and not tell anyone not in the loop? What possible gain would someone on the lowest level of pay be able to achieve when they could simply break the silence and make millions on a lucrative book deal by telling us all about the alleged conspiracy? Or all book and magazine publishers part of this conspiracy as well?

When the President of the United States holds a secret meeting in the Oval Office and tells those involved at that meeting that everything that transpires there is of Top Secret importance, has that ever stopped the media from finding out about the meeting scant minutes after it taking place? The media has their anonymous sources. Or are we to believe that all print and broadcast media are also part of this conspiracy?

The media could make billions by reporting the conspiracy, and even if they did not have an anonymous source, all it would require is a few undercover moles in these operations to expose the truth. Why, in all the years that there has been this supposed autism epidemic, have the media not done a thorough investigative report that was corroborated by other media sources proving the existence of a conspiracy?

All lawyers would have to be involved in the conspiracy for it to work. We all know that when a drug causes some kind of negative reaction, a class action suit is filed, sometimes by conglomerations of law firms. Do conspiracy theorists mean to say that these firms are deliberately avoiding the autism epidemic? For what purpose? Why would they deliberately avoid the vast sums of money that could be collected from such suits? You’d think it would be a walk in the park to ensure hush money was paid to keep the conspiracy going.

And all autism organizations would have to be involved in this conspiracy, including the biggest one in the world, Autism Speaks, They have funded research which sought to find out whether vaccines cause autism. Published findings indicate, yet again, that vaccines do not cause autism. Are we to assume then that Autism Speaks has been “gotten to” along with everyone else?

If so, then how could this have happened? The profits that Big Pharma generates from the sales of its products are not sufficient to bribe all the people that would have to be involved in such a conspiracy, nor could they hide such bribes on their books — unless perhaps the government tax agencies are involved in this conspiracy, in which case how would all the tax workers be trained to ignore these accounting errors? Are they made to take instructional classes which explain that the autism epidemic is a deliberate conspiracy designed by the collaboration between Big Pharma and the world’s governments to deliberately create work for the national healthcare systems, doctors, school systems et al?

Wouldn’t you think that many of the people involved in this conspiracy, who themselves have children or relatives with autism, stop for a moment and say, ”You know, on the one hand I want my kid to be cured, but on the other hand, I keep ensuring that people manufacture vaccines to make him worse.”

Let’s take a look at how much Big Pharma, the World Governments, and doctors are actually profiting from autism.

Big Pharma produces vaccines that are thought by conspiracy theorists to purposely cause autism.

A person may get a few dozen shots in their lifetime. Wouldn’t it be more profitable for Big Pharma if they developed a “treatment” for autism in pill form that would have to be administered over the course of a lifetime? To date, in America and other countries, only Risperdone and Abilify are approved by the respective health ministries to treat symptoms of autism, but not autism itself. Many other drugs have been tried and tested but have not been approved for the treatment of autism.

Hmmm….

Wouldn’t you think if government officials were bribed enough, they would let any old drug be approved for treatment? Money, money, money …

(to be continued)

HE DID IT! MY LITTLE LAD WALKED THE ADVENT SPIRAL …… as we watched the other children walk carefully around the Advent Spiral, holding candles that they lit from the central candle’s flame , and placing it amongst the foliage, I already had tears in my eyes. David played exquisite music on the Octave Mandolin as each child took their turn, occasionally accompanied by a Mum or Dad, adding ther own little personality traits to the occasion; sometimes reverential, sometimes solemn, sometimes exited, sometimes a little confused! It was magical and moving, yet there was the inevitable twinge of ”Oh, God, can Josh cope with this? All eyes upon him? Music ? What if, Oh god, what if he has …you know… a meltdown? ”

When it came to Joshua’s turn he said he wanted to do it, took my hand, and off we went. As we approached the centre and Josh lit his candle, my emotions got the better of me. It was as though I felt the pain and distress of the beginning of Joshua’s life all over again, yet the moment he lit his little candle , there was the realisation that he had survived against all odds as he walked with it, just as the other children had done, his journey somehow blessed by the light. I felt humbled, grateful, and so very proud of my little fella.

PAH is the major determinant of surgical outcome of left to right shunts. In this modern era of cardiac care allowing a child with left to right shunt to progress to a stage of Eisenmenger syndrome is considered as a huge medical failure . But , this is still rampant in many of the developing countries .

Cardiologists are divided over the issue of operability of Eisenmenger syndrome .The confusion is largely due to the conflicting data of outcome in these patients. While there is strong data when PVR exceeds SVR , the death is imminent in the post operative period .

What has complicated the issue is there are many case reports where severe PAH patients have been successfully operated. Most would think it is a statistical exception and one can not alter the traditional criteria based on few case reports.

But ,it remains an irony as on 2009 , we do not have a proper methodology to assess reversibility of PAH in Eisenmenger syndrome . Further , there is a significant number of patients with high PVR , who continue to experience an unabated left to right shunting . We do not have an answer for either the mechanism of such shunts and how to manage these patients.

This short paper was presented in the Annual scientific sessions of cardiological society of India 2009 regarding the usefulness of a new parameter to assess reversibility of PAH. This may not be called as a study rather a report of our experience in five patients with eisenmenger syndrome

The Dore website dore.co.uk has been redesigned recently. In the process they seem to have ‘lost’ all mention of the ‘Balsall Common’ study (Reynolds, Nicholson, Hambly, 2003; Reynolds & Nicholson, 2006), which though heavily criticised was the only research on Dore published in a peer-reviewed journal. They also seem to have dropped the various bits of ‘research’ which were either unpublished or press-released through such august journals as the Leamington Courier. The research which Wynford Dore said he’d be concentrating on funding, after Dore went broke and he brought back the assets (but not liabilities) for a fraction of the cost, seems to have disappeared – I’d be glad to hear if there’s been any progress here.

Prof Nicholson of Sheffield university carried out the ‘Balsall Common’ study and is a key figure in Dore’s early research and the cerebellar approach to learning difficulties. He has been admirably honest about the limitations of the approach, including issues with using the ‘dyslexia screening test’, which he developed, and refusing to endorse claims of a ‘miracle cure’. Prof Nicholson seems to have been dropped from Dore’s publicity machine.

Dr Roy Rutherford, a GP who had been very vocal in lending ‘medical backing’ to the Dore programme, seems to have also been absent from Dore and setting up his own ‘Autism Treatment and Prevention Centre‘. Holfordwatch also discovered that Rutherford withdrew from his supposed PhD researching Dore at Sheffield university ‘without completing any substantive research’.

The only research on the new Dore website is a well-hidden link-dump of paper titles, which seem to have been put there by someone who’s done a keyword search without reading and understanding the papers – some of them don’t relate to cerebellar theories of learning disabilities at all, and none specifically look at the Dore programme.

Meanwhile, Dore’s expensive PR company, Phil Hall Associates, are pushing a human-interest, celebrity-backed media drive. This has seen them get slots on several regional news programmes and local papers, where Dore have been able to deliver their message completely unchallenged, despite in one case my telephoning the TV station before transmission.

Phil Hall have also been using Scott Quinnell, the rugby player who brought Dore from Kenny Logan and Wynford Dore, for free national publicity for the Dore programme. Worryingly, the BBC, ITV, and other news organisations either don’t know, haven’t checked, or don’t care that Scott owns the company he’s being given airtime to promote. I thought I was cynical about mainstream media, but this hidden advertising during news and sports programmes by supposedly reputable and trustworthy organisations has shocked me.

To summarise, Dore have had to give up trying to pretend their programme is ’scientifically proven’, but they can pay for clever enough PR that this does not seem to matter any more. But do not despair. The Advertising Standards Authority have upheld a complaint about Dore, agreeing that Dore could not come up with evidence to support its claims to treat dyslexia.

As neither the first nor second study referred to Asperger’s syndrome and only two participants in the first study had dyspraxia, we considered that the evidence was inadequate to support claims to treat those conditions. With regards to dyslexia and ADHD, we did not consider that the studies were sufficiently robust to support the treatment claims for those conditions, and we therefore concluded that the claim was misleading.

Hooray! Go & read the whole thing, it’s a few paragraphs of clear demolition of Dore’s arguments. Holfordwatch, who made the original complaint, have a discussion of the ruling, and Podblack has covered the background.

So: the ASA agrees that Dore has no evidence to show it works, Dore themselves have pretty much taken their ball and gone home on the research issue, but because of Dore’s unfortunate tendency to reach for lawyers, Dr Rutherford’s admission that I’ve only not been sued yet because they can’t find me, and British libel law being pants (please sign their petition), then I still can’t put my real name to telling you so. This is a thoroughly unsatisfactory situation.

Happy Christmas.

The balance between love and pain. Advocating and fighting. Learning and loving.

Being part of the process of parents, like me, grieving and accepting what is. And learning that not only what IS, is actually perfect, but what IS, is exactly what the world needs to know to be a greater place for compassion and love.

I am grateful for the opportunity to learn how parents uniquely love their children. How each parent does the absolute best they can do at the time. How I get to see my own emotion in the parents that share the pain. The commonality of loss and yet also love.

And then the beautiful role in being part of the process in the growth of students. From the first time in the cafeteria, to the spontaneous joint attention, to the interest in others, to the independence. Witnessing the courage.

Seeing the complete love in parents and the courage in the students reminds me of my purpose. Why I am here. And my responsibility to do the absolute best that I can.

For that, I am grateful and humbled.

Each Christmas, we try to teach our kids about the gift GIVING part of the exchange tradition and not just focus on the GETTING part. Colin had his first “Holiday Store” experience at school last week and it was really hard for him to understand the need to buy for other people. Most 5 yr-olds have trouble understanding the joy of giving, and kids on the Austism Spectrum have an even tougher time. But, maybe, just maybe…he’s getting the gist of it.

From 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Erin and I cleaned out, cleaned up and generally fumigated her bedroom. Nice way to spend a weekend. Yes, my pre-teen daughter is a slob left-brained person who feels that organizing (or even putting away) her things is a waste of time. However, before anymore stuff invades our home, she had to figure out what she already owns and where it all is.

On the floor next to her bed she has a small, four octave, battery-operated keyboard that she bought with her own money a few years ago. Now that she’s graduated to the real piano in the dining room, the keyboard is rarely used unless Colin is in her room and then he plunks out tunes he’s heard. He loves that thing and is starting to ask for piano lessons of his own. Erin knew how much he enjoyed this thing and she decided to give it to him rather than donating it to Goodwill (where a majority of her stuff was headed). She took it downstairs and put it in his room for him…he was SO excited.

About an hour later, I saw Colin walk up the steps and go into Erin’s room. I heard them talking awhile and then, back down he came. When I went up to check on her cleaning progress, she was standing open-mouthed in the doorway.

“Mom, guess what Colin did!”
“What?”
“He brought me two of his favorite Hot Wheels cars. He told me he wanted me to have them so that ‘You’ll always remember me.’ “

Priceless.

It is absurd to think that we supposedly have generations of people going to their graves with undoc

It is absurd to think that we supposedly have generations of people going to their graves with undocumented and unverifiable wealth hidden somewhere that has gone unnoticed by the IRS or any other revenue authority in any country.

It is ridiculous to think that all these people would have the knowledge not only to participate in this conspiracy without friends, family members, acquaintances, lovers, et al remaining clueless about what’s going on, as well as to have a working knowledge of all tax laws, the most efficient methods for successful money laundering, and more.

Could any of you do it?

How much effort would it take to accomplish it if you did? How much time in your life would it consume? How could you enjoy the enormous wealth you would gain from this when you had to outwardly maintain a plethora of public appearances, keep a position at work and/or government, and spend your off hours continuing to work to manifest the illusion that you are an average everyday Joe with accountable income?

You would have to go to meetings among your fellow conspiracy theorists to make it work even at the most base levels of the conspiracy. You would have to be in constant communication with the world’s highest government officials.

It takes a lifetime of effort for anyone to get where they are. Yes, in some cases people are born into money. But that’s the exception, not the rule.

We have conspiracy theorists who are born poor and we have conspiracy theorists who are born rich. Why have none of these conspiracy theorists infiltrated the conspiracy and exposed everything? Just one is all it would take.

Why doesn’t Jenny McCarthy along with her current partner, Jim Carrey, take a few thousand dollars and pay to have one autistic – or tens of thousands of dollars to have a few busloads of autistics – tested for alien DNA since she has been quoted as stating her son is a Crystal Child and she is an Indigo Mom (a mom who started off life as an Indigo Child) ?

Conspiracy theorists could just pool their money and pay one person — an 18 year old college student – to intern at Big Pharma.

Instead we have been hearing for years that there is the iron-clad, iron-curtain Berlin Wall-style perimeter that cannot be penetrated. Guess what? You can dig under such walls or blast through them. People have been doing that in repressed countries for years.

For Big Pharma to pull off such the conspiracy that conspiracy theorists allege they are pulling off would mean that all government health officials, all government oversight agencies, all Congressmen, all doctors, all nurses, all nurse practitioners, all interns, all researchers, all autism specialists, and all forms of media in every country in the world would be complicit in this conspiracy.

Do conspiracy theorists mean to suggest that all the countries in the world are in collusion? Do they truly believe that the United States –even as it bombs Afghanistan and Iraq, even as it sanctions Cuba, even as it squabbles with North Korea, even as it tries to negotiate some sort of peace between Israelis and Palestinians – has somehow managed to work out secret deals with the leaders of all of these political entities for the express purpose of infecting people with autism?

Do conspiracy theorists mean to suggest that capitalistic democracies have struck deals with communist countries, fascist countries, nationalist countries, monarchies, anarchies, etc. on the autism conspiracy?

There are wars going on all over the world. As much as we hate to admit it, there are countries drawing up war plans on other countries. Are we to believe that all these countries are somehow peacefully supporting each other in order to make the vaccine conspiracy work?

At a time when people are dying of famine or simply disappear in repressive countries, why would countries that are alleged to be deliberately subjugating their people want to take such an artificial and ineffective measure to do what nature and evil are already doing so well? And why would they want to force these governments create a situation in which many people would be placed in need of government services even as many governments work hard to make people less dependent on government services?

(to be continued)

ASD stands for Accelerated Stabilization Design, a breakthrough technology developed by Johnson and

ASD stands for Accelerated Stabilization Design, a breakthrough technology developed by Johnson and Johnson for ACUVUE ADVANCE for ASTIGMATISM toric contact lenses.

How ASD Works
Contact lenses with ASD technology work with the eyelids to harness the natural pressure of a blink to realign the lens when it rotates out of position, which minimises lens movement when you lie down or tilt your head. The accelerated slope of thickness of ASD technology prevents the lens from competing with the eyelids’ movements, instead harnessing the power of a blink to re-orient and stabilize the lens quickly.

Traditional contact lenses that feature a prism ballast design rely primarily on the force of gravity to align the lens on the eye, which causes the lens to work against the natural blinking motion of the eyelid. This results in temporary visual blurriness when the lens gets disoriented.

Why ASD?
Contact lenses with ASD ensure that you have crisp, clear vision all day long. With breakthrough technology, ACUVUE ADVANCE for ASTIGMATISM contact lenses ensure that every blink is a smooth, natural interaction with the lens that maintains continuous stability throughout the day. This enhanced stabilization is the key to increased visual acuity during all activities.

This revolutinary design also reduces the settling time for contact lenses, which in turn reduces the amount of time that astigmatism patients have to spend at a fitting. Because of the accelerated fitting time that ACUVUE(reg) ADVANCE(reg) for ASTIGMATISM with ASD technology has, Eye Car Professionals to go from “zero to fitting in 60 seconds”.

Where can I get a pair of contact lenses with ASD?
ACUVUE ADVANCE for ASTIGMATISM contact lenses are available at optical outlets island-wide.
