I’m still fighting Iliotibial Band Syndrome, which runs in the family (my Dad suffered from ITBS a couple of years ago, and it was so acute he needed physical therapy). I’m thinking it’s a mix of increased distance and the Asics I wear for long-distance runs. I wasn’t thinking about the shoes until I read some forum posts where runners determined their shoes were the culprit to their ITBS issues, so I’ve been running exclusively in my New Balance Minimus 00 and 20 and Adidas ZX racers and have found my right knee and hip pain is subsiding.

In addition, I have black toe, which I also believe to be an issue with my Asics. More on that in another post…

Ronnie Fieg’s most recent collaboration with ASICS has produced another neck breaking style induced monster that RF is known for. The main focus of this collab will of course be the Gel Lyte III models pictured above.

“Miami Beach” Gel Lyte III

Featured in an easily recognizable Miami Dolphins inspired colorway, the “Miami Beach” half of this pack is stacked with some key creativity points that not only play on the colors but the materials as well that combine in a complementary way. Constructed from a microperf nubuck and complete with a woven mesh toebox and collar, the material selection will not disappoint. The orange ASICS stripes have been created from a 3M reflective material and add to the overall athletic look of a typical runner styled shoe which is all capped off with the white midsole and equally brilliant “ASICS” display a quarter of the way through the midsole.

This release will also be a platform for ASICS to feature a new type of comfort for its casual, lifestyle creations. ASICS has constructed a newly developed, sewn-in memory foam comfort footbed. This memory foam comfort was created especially for this East Coast Project.

“New York City” Gel Lyte III

Fieg, an NYC native and a designer of the East Coast Project, represents well in this New York Knicks inspired rendition of the GLIII. The perfect combination of perforated pigskin on the toebox and quarter panel accents the soft nubuck quarter panel and heel section. A light grey midsole is the stage to which the 3M  ASICS stripes and woven mesh tongue rest on.

RF represents New York City well with this soon to be recognized classic.

Coming off yesterday’s announcement of the East Coast Project apparel component, Ronnie Fieg andASICS present the centerpiece of their latest collection, the Gel Lyte III “New York City and Miami Beach”.  Each pair features unique details with the NYC pair featuring  a perforated pigskin toebox and quarter panel with a soft nubuck quarter and heel counter while the Miami version combines a microperf nubuck with a woven mesh toebox and collar.

The official release date the pair is May 10th at KITH, but both pairs will be available early, along with the entire capsule collection, as part of a KITH pop-up shop in Miami on May 2nd.  Retail is for each model is set at $145 with each pair coming with with a pair of custom-created ‘New York City’ or ‘Miami Beach’ “Just Stance” ultralight cotton, super invisible socks with embroidered detailing and ultralight cushioning.  An additional set of flat laces and two sets of custom round laces that weave in the key colors of the given cities are also included.

The Miami pop-up will be divided into the two adjacent storefronts. The Miami side will be open from 11 am to 3 pm and the next door New York side will be open from 4 pm to 8 pm.

I’m doing 5 miles today for my lunch break. I’m giving myself a “Go Team – Go” speech as I write this entry. It’s really blah blah weather wise here in DC today. I just want to sit on the couch and watch movies and catch up on my shows online. Does anyone watch The Following? I really like it. It’s a dark show like Criminal Mind ( My other fav show). It was actually pretty tasty. It was like chicken broccoli cheese rice casserole but with brussel sprouts. I’m still not a fan of brussel sprouts. But, the health benefits are worth the bitterness. Well, this is what I tell myself and i’m sticking to it. I hope everyone is having a happy Tuesday!

In the last couple years, as I started to become more and more consumed with the fashion world and finding my own style. Living in the DMV area, I was never really exposed to a style different from the Levi’s denim, old and new school Nike, Jordan brand (a given), and 993 New Balances. So it is finally Spring time in Minnesota and it is time for me to take out my new running shoes.  I buy two pairs at a time when they are on sale at 6pm.com and I get excited when it is time to break in a new colorful pair!  Except for today…

Today I threw on those new shoes and started my new GPS mapmyrun.com app and took off…and stopped…and took off….and stopped.

I was miserable!  My shoes were too tight, my foot hurt, my old hips hurt and I was panting like my new puppy.

The blissful memory of starting to run back outside started to vanish and all I could think was, “How am I ever going to get back into this and run longer?”

But as the mapmyrun app women announced through my head phones that I had reached 1 mile, then 2 miles I calmed down and came to terms with my first run of Spring.

I will head back out on Wednesday, a little further, with a little slower music, and a little less frustrated.  Why?  Because I do love to run, I just have to re-teach my body that I do!  So I won’t give up and I will remember “This Too Shall Pass”.

Derek and I tried out a new chain restaurant last night called Famoso.  It’s a new pizza joint in Grande Prairie, but it has locations all over the place – we had never tried it before.  It was very busy and the take-out process seemed a bit disorganized.  Luckily, we were dining in!  The food and service were both excellent! Can’t beat a  salted dark chocolate gelato in a pool of espresso.  YUM!

Nerd

I’ve been playing with Google Docs today – working out a form for our local running club for sponsorships.  I have to say, it really brought out the nerd in me… I was so excited to embed my form into our hosted website.  It might not be used for that purpose, but I can definitely see the potential!

Runner

I feel I cut the first two sections short just to get to the good stuff.  I got new shoes!  I had some good success running with my old Nikes and had some pain in the Saucony’s… blisters and sharp digging in the arch area again.  I know I really need to let my between-the-toes blister heal, but I feel I can’t really afford to rest at the moment.

Anyway, I went to Ernie’s Sports Experts in Grande Prairie, as they are one of the sponsors of our running club, and I get a nice discount.  One of the employees had given a talk at one of our Sunday training days and I was happy to see he was working.  I even told him that, which I think weirded him out a bit.  Anyway… I managed to find out that I am not a neutral runner after all.  Just by doing a small squat, we could see that my left ankle rolled inwards.  They did notice this at my last shoe fitting at the last place I went to for shoes, but it didn’t seem to count against their verdict of me being a neutral runner vs. a pronator.  Back to the left ankle… we both decided it was too much of a coincidence that ankle rolled in and that is the foot causing me all the grief.

I went in with the idea I’d like to get into a Brooks shoe.  I tried on Asics (as the Asics 2000 is the new Asics 2160 that I had success with before the Saucony incident of 2013), something in New Balance, then the Brooks Ravenna.

Felt even better and lighter than the Asics, but some heel slippage.  I felt I could resolve this with some lacing techniques.

As I drove home, I thought about how much I wanted to go running in them.  Unfortunately it was Friday and a rest day, so trying them out would have to wait.

This morning I had a 13k run, only the second time I’ve run this far this year.  Last week I was due to do a 16k, but the best laid plans did not pan out at all!  My running buddy mixed up our dates, I forgot my garmin, I had no music on my iPhone (wiped it after having battery problems), the weather sucked, and I had a lot do at home that I kept thinking about.  I cut it short at 5k.

Anyway, the Brooks Ravenna carried me perfectly though every kilometer today.  I did feel a bit of heat under my forefoot, but otherwise, they felt great!  Not even a single new blister.

I am running an 8k race on Mother’s Day that I’ve not done before.  I tried out the course on Thursday and found it really enjoyable!  Scenic trails to uphill sidewalk to dirt roads, to fast sidewalks, back to scenic trails where I found deer!

I exclusively wore Nike’s in my teens, Asics 21 series in my 20′s and then Asics Gel Pulse when I first got back in to running a couple of years ago.

Last year, when my last pair of Pulses wore thin and I decided that I didn’t like the new version, I went on a spree.  I must have bought and returned a half dozen pairs of running shoes before settling on the Saucony Guide 5.

The Guide 5 is the best shoe that I have ever run in.  I love the way it makes it easier to forefoot strike, how it’s lightweight and has a minimal drop.  I love the way it has a teensy bit of stability but still makes my stride feel perfectly natural.

I love this shoe so much that I have bought it three times.

I am running in my third pair and slowly wearing them out.

It is tempting to continue re-buying this shoe.

After all, it is still available online.

So what is keeping this shoe loyalist from whipping out her AmEx?

The only color left in my size is the same color as my last three pairs.  The color pattern was interesting on the first pair, familiar on the second and redundant on the third.  I can’t bring myself to buy a fourth pair in the same color because I just don’t think that I can even look at them anymore.

I’m ready for a change.  There are so many great shoes hitting the market this spring, some of which I think would work great for the way I run, and I want to give them a try.

I think that I am ready for something lighter-weight that will offer more flexibility. 

I have already bought the Virrata - which would satisfy all three of these points – but I’m iffy about them.  I ran around in them in the store, and I have to say that you really do feel the impact of every step.  I also worry that they will wear out quickly because the rubber sole seems a little light.  I am tempted to keep them to switch things up and occasionally run in a more minimal shoe.  If I do keep them, I will do a more formal review on Rachel On and On.
