Don Aviv, CPP, PCI, PSP, is the chief operating officer of Interfor, Inc., an international investigation and security consulting firm, and managing director of the company’s physical security consulting division. He says there are times that he feels like he was “born into” the security profession. “I have been in this field since I was able to work, and I come from a long line of security and investigative professionals,” he says. It was his father, Juval Aviv, who founded Interfor in 1979.

Aviv is responsible for managing day to-day operations, including relationships with vendors, sources, and clients; ensuring that work for Interfor’s clients meets high standards of quality and cost effectiveness. He is also charged with planning, implementing, and supervising work for physical and IT security clients. “Fortunately, there is no such thing as a ‘typical day’ here,” he says. “Depending on our case load, I might be out in the field reviewing a client’s physical security or IT program, interviewing new employees, meeting with potential vendors, or in all day case meetings with our investigative staff.”

Because of the nature of the firm’s work and clients, which include some of the world’s largest corporations, Aviv is often involved in what he describes as unique and complex projects. “These projects often involve significant operational and logistical require ments— from planning and implementing multifaceted executive protection details to mass lay-offs to sensitive financial investigations,” he explains. However, “We occasionally accept noncorporate cases from people desperate for our help, such as a wife whose husband has absconded to another country with their children and life savings or a family that lost its life savings in a fraudulent investment,” Aviv says. “It always leaves a mark on me when we are able to assist people in such dire situations.”

He describes security management as a growing and necessary field, as more companies recognize that money spent on security is not purely an operational cost from which they see no return on their investment. “They are starting to recognize that proper security is a vital part of maintaining and growing a healthy company,” Aviv says. “In fact, because of the increasing threats from terrorism to intellectual property theft and the security issues raised by layoffs, it is becoming much easier to visualize the value of security even though the economy is chipping away at corporate security and investigative budgets.”

Aviv has been an ASIS International member for nine years. In the last five
years, he has earned all three ASIS certifications. “No matter how much experience or knowledge you actually have, clients are forced to take your word for it unless you have a recognizable certification,” he says. “These certifications let people know up front that I have the necessary knowledge and training that meet recognized standards within the security industry.”

Aviv is active in his local chapter; he is also a member of the ASIS Physical Security Council. “My involvement with ASIS has been extremely valuable as an educational and networking tool,” he says. “Many of my most important professional relationships, both locally and internationally, began through ASIS.”

Ich hatte mich vor ein paar Wochen in diesem Blog darüber gewundert, dass immer mehr Kids in einem bestimmten Style rumlaufen, den ich als das “Brathähnchenphänomen” bezeichnete. Inzwischen weiß ich, dass es für diesen Style, bestehend aus Ed Hardy Klamotten, Vokuhila und maximaler Solariumbräune, eine offizielle Bezeichnung gibt: Es ist der Krocha Style. Dank Wikipedia weiß ich jetzt, dass “Krocha” österreichisch für “Kracher” ist und Jugendliche bezeichnet, die dieser sogenannten JugendKULTur anhängen. Über das Phänomen gibt es einen, wie ich finde, sehr lustigen, Bericht des österreichischen Senders ATV:

Die Wiener Version dieses Prollstyles ist zwar auch schlimm weil markenfixiert und peinlich, erinnert ein bisschen an die Popper der 80er. Nimmt aber meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz so schlimme Formen an wie hier in Greifswald, Chemnitz oder in Marzahn.

Excellent Lessons Learned from Major Incidents

There is a saying that no leader will live long enough to learn from their own mistakes, so great leaders learn from other people’s mistakes too.

As I was reviewing titles from the November issue of Security Management (an ASIS publication) and on the lookout for lessons learned, I came across the following title:  Aligning Security and Company Risk

I clicked on the link and read an article that featured two major security/compliance incidents and what steps leaders from General Dynamics Corporation and Providence Health & Services took after major incidents occurred at their organizations.

The article really got my attention when I read the first paragraph:

After a major incident, companies often decide that they need to purchase new security products to prevent a recurrence of the problem. But sometimes the solution may be nontechnical: to better align security and business risks and to enforce existing policies.

The article offers lessons learned from two organizational leaders who realized their security, compliance and business management efforts needed to be better aligned and that no technology solution was going to “fix” their problems, gaps and weaknesses. 

Are you organization’s security, compliance and risk management efforts aligned?

Does your organization have policies and procedures that help all appropriate personnel understand how your organization’s business processes are aligned?

Do all appropriate personnel understand their specific roles, responsibilities and obligations with respect to Security Management?  Compliance Management?  Risk Management? Reputation Management?

Does your organization need to modernize outdated, fragmented or manually intensive efforts that are making your organization vulnerable to expensive risks or a major incident?

In my experiences performing risk, vulnerability, compliance, safety and continuity assessments…most organizations can definitely learn from other leaders’ and other organizations’ mistakes sooner than later.

Existe un espacio, escondido, tímido, enredado en la maraña cibernética que habla de pequeñeces. Las alegrías que desde lo cotidiano recopilan personas de cualquier parte del mundo.

Es un lugar importante. Saber mirar con ojos de milagro la belleza de lo pequeño, por nimio que pudiera parecer, no es fácil. Compartirse con desconocidos que día tras día lo son menos, que traspasan océanos, que se alegran con las alegrías de los demás, tampoco.

Y el mundo necesita emplazamientos como este. Hoy añado un epígrafe más al cuaderno de mi travesía, con las pequeñeces que están ensanchando cada vez más el espacio de mi tienda.

La ciudad eterna. Roma  me ampara de nuevo bajo la lluvia y el caos. La habito a cada paso sintiéndome cada vez menos turista y más envuelta en su palpitar ordinario. Ya no visito tantas iglesias, ni museos. La percibo como la ciudad de seres queridos. Los que están, los que estuvieron y quedaron enamorados de la marabunta.
Paseo empujando el cochecito de mi sobrina. No hay más, pero tampoco menos. Como siempre, gracias a las personas,  también yo he quedado enamorada de esta urbe caótica.

Las pequeñeces se multiplican. Y es Assisi, el preludio de un momento que percibo decisivo en mi vida. La pequeña Asís, mi ciudad eterna.
He caminado de nuevo por sus calles. Me he regado bajo su agua de otoño. He dejado que su frío me acaricie el rostro  y su aroma a leña ardiente me seduzca una vez más.
Desierta, para mi entera. Sin turistas estivales. Sola en el camino, pero profundamente acompañada. Por el pasado, por el presente, por el futuro, por mis sueños, por los recuerdos, por las personas.
De nuevo las palabras se quedan tan cortas para expresar lo que alberga el corazón…

THE PROBLEM

CCTV has taken some leaps and bounds over the last few years, with IP based camera systems are  introducing us to larger resolution cameras, ability to work within an IT setup, making management of larger systems easier as IT personnel can manage IP based camera system , but a larger problem has emerged with this technology, like all computer based problems,  the larger resolution the larger memory is needed, and greater bandwidth, which produces it own list problems. Whilst IP based camera systems are ok, the emergence of problems such as time lag which occurs due to compression that is needed, hampers the ability to get feedback immediately while events take place, not to mention trying to get PTZ cameras to go where you want at the speed and accuracy of an analogue PTZ being used on a matrix switcher. These are all problems currently being experienced with IP based camera systems.

With no real solution to tackle this in the near future the problem that faces our industry, is creating a product that can bring back mega-pixel resolution without problems that involve changing current cabling infrastructure, worrying about network bandwidth, and most importantly tackling the issue of zero time delay.

THE ANSWER

The answer to this is High Definition CCTV, which allows integrators to use current cabling infrastructure, and enable a High definition Surveillance system that has zero time lag, fixes bandwidth issues, as well as lowering memory needs for larger systems, but with similar flexibility that the IP based camera sysetms have.

Peranan teknologi dalam penangkalan dan pemberantasan terorisme telah disinggung oleh Makmur Keliat, pakar ilmu hubungan internasional, di harian ini, Selasa (21/7). Ada dua hal yang dapat digaisbawahi dari artikel tersebut. Pertama, apa yang dikutip dari Paul Bracken bahwa  “ cara terbaik untuk mengalahkan teroris adalah dengan menembus sel-selnya. “  Yang kedua, ketidakmampuan dinas intelijen Indonesia mencegah kejutan strategis teroris, dalam hal ini dikaitkan dengan ketidakmampuan mendapatkan informasi, yang bisa jadi terkait dengan keterbatasan teknologi.

Makmur menegaskan, teknologi – pada sisi lain – bukan segala-galanya. AS yang memiliki teknologi canggih pun kewalahan menghadapi teroris. Itulah yang terjadi, dengan kecanggihan teknologi yang dimilikinya, upaya untuk menangkap Osama bin Laden sejauh ini tak membuahkan hasil dan pada masa lalu tidak kuasa mencegah serangan 11 September 2001. Terorisme juga pernah mengguncang negara maju seperti Inggris dan Spanyol.

Satu hal yang sulit disangkal, pasca terjadinya serangan teroris, negara-negara maju lalu menerapkan kebijakan dan sistem yang efektif sehingga, misalnya, setelah serangan 11 September tidak lagi terjadi serangan teror di AS, demikian pula di Inggris dan Spanyol. Ini berbeda dengan Indonesia, yang setelah terjadi bom Bali I masih ada bom Bali II, dan setelah Marriott I ada Marriott II, plus Kedubes Australia dan lainnya.

Seperti disebut dalam situs BomDetection, melawan terorisme dibutuhkan perencanaan strategis, integrasi teknologi, pelatihan terstruktur, adanya kebijakan dan prosedur yang berkembang (mengikuti kebutuhan keamanan), juga strategi kolektif dengan badan-badan pemerintah, kontraktor pertahanan, integrator sistem, dan tempat-tempat (yang mungkin sasaran teror).

Resolusi yang lebih baik diharapkan bisa lebih memperjelas orang-orang yang dicurigai. Dari tayangan TV Indonesia memang tampak ketajaman citra video masih kurang. Berikutnya, teknologi yang telah banyak digunakan adalah sistem inspeksi Sinar-X, baik untuk skrining maupun untuk imaging, apakah untuk surat, paket, dan bahkan kargo.

Satu perlengkapan lain yang semestinya semakin banyak dipasang adalah explosives detection chemistry (EDC) dan explosuves trace detectors (ETD). Inilah alat yang sebenarnya semakin vital karena bahan peledak sejauh ini merupakan senajata pilihan bagi teroris. Tantangan bagi petugas keamanan bisa dikatakan ada di sini. Ini pula tantangan bagi badanatau perusahaan yang menawarkan jasa penanggulangan terorisme. Di satu sisi bahan peledaknya makin canggih, di sisi detektornya, demikian pula keahlian untuk mendeteksinya, memiliki keterbatasan.

Penyedia jasa penanggulangan terorisme, dengan demikian, sangat tertantang untuk menciptakan alat deteksi yang mudah digunakan, bahkan oleh mereka yang sebelumnya tidak berpengalaman mendeteksi bahan peledak, sementara alat deteksi baru ini akan mampu mendeteksi bahan peledak jenis apa pun, tentunya termasuk jenis yang berdaya ledak tinggi, seperti C4, TNT, dan PETN.

Sistem deteksi jejak bahan peledak kreasi AI yang dikenal dengan nama XD-2i menggunakan ilmu kimia analitik khusus untuk mendeteksi bahan peledak. ETD bisa dengan cepat dan andal mendeteksi bahan peledak komersial, militer, dan buatan rumahan, seperti bahan peledak cair, serbuk hitam, nitroselulosa, bubuk senapan tanpa asap, ANFO, nitrat, nitro-aromatik, bahan peledak plastik, peroksida, klorat, dan lainnya.

Di luar alat

Seperti juga disinggung dosen filsafat politik Armada Riyanto, dalam tulisannya yang bertajuk Sustainabilitas Terorisme, Armada Riyanto, Kompas, 21.07.2009 ; Erich Fromm telah mengingatkan bahwa teror merupakan produk tindakan sistematis. Ada rancangan, kepastian metodologi, target, sistem perekrutan, pelatihan, organisasi, dan tentu ideologi.

Karena itu pula, langkah untuk menghadapinya pun tidak bisa dengan langkah setengah-setengah, apalagi asal-asalan. Dengan pengalaman tragis beberapa kali di Tanah Air, tampak jelas bahwa selain alat/sarananya tidak memadai, konsepnya pun tampaknya perlu dirombak total.

Di ujung depan, seperti dikemukakan Makmur Keliat, pastilah dibutuhkan penyegaran struktur dan kerja intelijen. Seperti dikemukakan pengamat militer F Djoko Poerwoko, saat ini di Indonesia hanya ada satu badan intelijen strategis, yakni Badan Intelijen Negara. Di Australia ada lima, yakni Office of National Assesments (ONA), Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS), Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO), dan Defence Signal Intelligence (DSI) (Angkasa, Edisi Koleksi, “Menguak Tabir Operasi Intelijen dan Spionase”, 2009).

Tentu Australia ingin menjalankan operasi intelijen secara tajam, spesifik. Negara yang dihadapkan pada tantangan intelijen akut seperti Indonesia jelas membutuhkan dukungan operasi dinas intelijen yang canggih.

David Owen dalam bukunya, Hidden Secrets : A Complete History of Espionage, and the Technology Used to Support It (2002), menjelaskan sejumlah istilah yang relevan dengan urusan kita hari-hari ini, yakni HUMINT (human intelligence) untuk pengintaian manusia, SIGINT (signal intelligence) yang terkait penguraian pesan dan analisis trafik, ELINT (electronic intelligence) yang melibatkan sensor jarak jauh dan pengintaian satelit. Tidak kalah seru false intelligence, yang di dalamnya ada upaya-upaya pengelabuan, misinformasi, dan agen ganda.

Semua negara kini makin menempatkan intelijen sebagai prioritas, menyusun rencana agar intelijen lebih cerdas. AS melakukan ini karena setiap saat harus menghadapi lawan-lawan baru yang dilengkapi baru yang dilengkapi senjata yang makin mengerikan, kemampuan komunikasi dan koordinasi makin maju dan andal. Semua itu membuat AS harus mengubah cara mengumpulkan dan menganalisis intelijen, dan menerjemahkannya dalam kebijakan.

Ketika ada momentum bom di Ritz Carlton dan Marriot, bukan hanya AS yang harus melakukan langkah di atas. Ini juga saatnya bagi Indonesia meng-overhaul dinas intelijennya, baik struktur, operasi, maupun teknologi yang diterapkannya.

El iPod Nano me cuesta 145 euros, con el grabado y demás. Es de 8GB en rojo, exclusivo de Apple. El envío es gratuíto desde Apple.

El kit Nike + iPod que no es otra cosa que el sensor y el receptor para sincronizar las zapatillas con el iPod sale por 29 euros e imagino que gastos de envío aparte.

Y lo último que quedan son las zapaatillas, que yo tengo Nike pero no Nike+ para poder incorporarles el sensor, de modo que he visto las Pegasus 25ED que me gustan y ahí estamos, en otros 110 euros, imagino, igual que el kit, gastos de envío aparte.

¿Ahora qué? Bueno, ahora toca buscarlo todo más barato porque no sé si habéis sumado pero va todo por encima de los 200 euros. Por un lado buscaré el Nano en tiendas de aquí, en internet, segunda mano quizás, etc. Y las zapatillas y el kit lo mismo menos lo de segunda mano. Miraré en tiendecillas, quizás outlet, no sé. ¿Alguien tiene alguna recomendación? Bueno, por mi parte cuando tenga algo tanteado ya os lo comento y mira, si os sirve de ayuda pues mejor que mejor. Ich hatte mich in Daniel’s Blog mal positiv über dieses Album geäußert. Deswegen schreibe Ich jetzt auch mal etwas mehr darüber. Mir als Blueshörer sind Powertrios sowieso ein Begriff (Cream, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Taste). Jede dieser Bands ist hervorragend besetzt und meist durch einen sehr guten Gitarristen beglückt. Wie kann es sich da ein dahergelaufener Mayer erlauben, sein eigenes Power Trio zu gründen ? Er kann. Er darf. Und er sollte. Nicht umsonst ist John Mayer vom Rolling Stone als einer der neuen Gitarrenhelden bezeichnet worden (genau genohmen nannten sie ihn sogar Clapton Jr. oder irgendwas in der Richtung). Für seine Rhythmusabteilung hat sich Mayer auch nicht lumpen lassen und sich zwei der besten Sessionmusiker überhaupt organisiert, welche auch an seinem dritten Studioalbum maßgeblich beteiligt waren. Ich spreche hier von Steve Jordan und Pino Palladino. Beide spielten auf diversen Platten und beide spielten schon in der Backband von God himself [Eric Clapton]. Ob er sie ihm empfohlen hat, weiss Ich gar nicht … muss Ich mal bei Gelegenheit googeln.

Interessant ist besonders, dass sowohl Palladino als auch Jordan für einige Songs Credits bekommen haben, d.h. nicht nur einfach gespielt, sondern auch Einfluss auf die Songs hatten. Von den insgesamt 11 Tracks sind 2 Cover, von denen Mayer “Wait Until Tomorrow” immer noch regelmäßig performt, er muss ihn wohl mögen. Was gibt es noch zu sagen ? Achja, Anspieltipps … gebe Ich normalerweise nur ungern, da dadurch andere Songs möglicherweise missachtet werden; Ich würde hier “Gravity”, “Another Kind of Green” (mein Lieblingssong des Albums und Ich frage mich immernoch ob, Green hier ein Synonym für Liebe ist :\ Beziehe mich dabei auf einen Jeff Beck Song ["Love Is Green" von Wired]) und “Something’s Missing”, einen Song der auf fast allen Liveerscheinungen von John Mayer enthalten war, bis auf den neuesten: Where the Light Is (eine Textzeile aus “Gravity”). Ich habe es schon häufiger erwähnt, dass Ich ein John Mayer Fan bin, habe sogar alle veröffentlichten CDs (sogar As/Is, was meiner Meinung nach, eine deutlich bessere Songauswahl hat als “Any Given Thursday”) und freue mich wie ein Schnitzel auf das nächste Studioalbum (obwohl Ich dem Rolling Stone recht geben muss, die neuen Songpartien, die Mayer veröffentlicht hat, finde Ich bisher nicht so überzeugend, hoffe immernoch auf irgendeinen”härteren”, groovigen Rocksong).

While ASIS is slowly but steadily growing in the UK, across the
Atlantic in New York professional skateboarder Billy
Rohan is also making waves on the grassroots skate scene.

Billy has been named New Yorker of the week by cable TV channel NY1,
thanks to his work generating a new-found interest amongst youths in skateboarding. He’s also been building skateparks around the city so as to host his skate sessions, and using skate equipment donated by his sponsors. and furthermore creating places to do it.

We are happy to see that similar programs are happening in the US where
the situation amongst youths is similar to that in the UK. The need for change is becoming more and more obvious and action sports can provide a solution. Check the video and full story  here.  (seen in NY1.com)

Curioseo con gusto por las páginas de visitas, no tanto por cultivar el ego que nos mueve a mostrarnos -éste es un lugar secreto, al fin y al cabo, donde sólo acude un reducido grupo de personas encantadoras e inmortales y a veces yo- sino por averiguar qué quiere, qué le ronda por la mente al personaje que hace clic buscando algo y sobre todo descubrir qué le gusta, si algo le ha gustado.

Ayer vi que alguien me estaba traduciendo al italiano. Pinchando aquí creo que funciona en menos de un minuto.

Urgente bisogno che qualcuno mi spiega come si baciano con gli occhiali.

E cosa fare se piove duro e bagnato. E se fate movimenti bruschi, non vanno a sparato. E se sei un anti-sommossa come schiacciare e non si decompongono, come è accaduto l’altro giorno in un pub.
