Yesterday I received an email from Dawn at Love Romances Café letting me know that Heat Waves had been nominated for Best Contemporary of 2009. Can you say WOW! I was shocked. It only got better. As I was reading the other nominees I noticed Spank Me Twice was up for Best Erotic Book of 2009. It floored me to be nominated for two awards.
I’m up against some awesome authors for the Contemporary award, but I swear just being nominated is exciting. )
The voting begins the 15th. Once I get the information I’ll post it, in case you’ve read Heat Waves and want to vote. LOL

In other news I participated in my first book signing with eleven other authors last night. It was interesting. During the author bio the announcer talked about my nominations. Well! The funniest part was at the end. I was packing up my things when this older couple…I’m talking late sixties . early seventies comes up to me and says, “What was the name of that book? Smack Me Twice, Hit Me Twice?”

I looked at her and asked, “Spank Me Twice?”

“Yes. Yes, that’s the one.” She turns to her husband. “We have to go home and look that book up!”

I was rolling. It’s nice to see they’re still interested in sex.

The day kept getting better because when I got home I checked email and there was a contract for Dante’s Desire.

Now how am I going to top that? LOL

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

A monster storm is making its way north. They say it’s going to miss us. I’m thankful for a lot of reasons – one being I hate shoveling and we didn’t buy that snow blower this year.

Part of me enjoys the storms though. I like sitting in my sunroom watching the snow fall and built up outside. A warm cup of hot chocolate and a good book goes well with this scenery. I love watching my dog’s race around the snow, burying their faces in the white powder.

It was during a storm that I came up with the idea for Talk Dirty to Topaz. The couple has some red-hot sex in a sunroom while stranded by a snowstorm. Strange this book has been out since July and it’s suddenly selling like hotcakes. I’m not complaining, mind you. I’m rather excited. :o) It just makes me wonder why all of a sudden.

Mistletoe Studs did great this year too. I don’t usually like to write seasonal books, but this one I couldn’t resist. Who wouldn’t want hot twins – right?

I’m still trying to figure out the payroll crap, so that will likely eat up my day.

Watch we’ll get hit with two feet and I won’t be able to leave the house!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Tired!

I’ve been working so hard to accomplish so many deadlines, some self-imposed, that I’m wiped out. I woke up late, but not too late to get my daughter off to school on time. Today I’m taking a mental health day! )

I have more good news to share though. First is my new cover for Wild Lickins coming out from Aspen Mountain Press on February 19th.

The other good news is I’ve been invited to join the Cougar Challenge. I hope I live up to these awesome writers. I have an idea for a story so I’m going to write up the synopsis and present it to the group.

I do want to get my word count in for Dante’s Desire today, but right now I’m too exhausted to think, let alone write.

Happy Thursday everyone!

The beginning of a new week. The DH and I went out for dinner and drinks with my brother in law and his wife this weekend. It was nice to be out of the house. I needed a night out more than I realized.

I have another busy week ahead of me. I’m editing a romantic comedy I want to submit to a contest, along with getting it ready for an agent appointment in March. Also on my lists of to-do’s this week is editing the Shea Manor series. I haven’t finished writing book two, but one and three are done.

I’m also hard at work on a new wip that needs to be finished and submitted by Jan 31st. It’s for a themed series so there is a deadline. The idea came to me last week and I had to put aside Brooke and Liam’s story for Shea Manor to work on this. Once I’m done I’ll return to the other story.

I’ve been planning out my week on Sunday’s, it seems having a schedule makes me more productive. I’m the queen of procrastination so this way I feel accountable for getting the work done. On top of my writing schedule I have little tasks around the house I want to tackle. Things I couldn’t do if I were working the day job.

Our daughter just strolled in from a four day trip to Washington DC with the father in law. She went straight to bed after being on a train for seven hours. I’m looking forward to her waking up to hear all the details. My FIL surprised them with a trip to the White House, along with a tour of the Oval Office. He didn’t think he’d be able to pull it off, but he did. She missed a few days of school for this trip, but hey, it was educational right?

Just waiting for the final approval on my new cover for Wild Lickins so I can share. I’m really digging this cover.

Eight more days until the release of Ignited, my newest ménage from Ellora’s Cave Exotika line.

Well time to get busy on my chapter’s newsletter and do some editing. Until tomorrow…

Since I’ve let the house go I decided to clean today. I couldn’t look at the mess anymore. We haven’t cleaned in a few weeks so the dust bunnies are taking over. The cleaning has been very therapeutic I must say, but it’s very exhausting. The DH is behind me reminding me I had surgery two weeks ago. I need to take it easy. Hmm, maybe he should call a maid service then?? LOL Nah, I need the distraction. So time for me to nap before I start the vacuuming.

I was surprised with my cover art for Wild Lickins this afternoon. I’ll be able to share it in a few days. I’m impressed with how they nailed what I asked for. It’s rare, though their vision is usually better than mine! )

Wow someone is looking down on me lately. I’ve been swamped. Between edits for Wild Lickins, FLE’s for Ignited due out the 26th and the cover art for Wild Lickins (which is an Ice Cream Shoppe for those wondering J) things have been non-stop.

I must be getting popular because people are requesting my books on Astatalk. It frustrates the hell out of me that people would steal from writers who bust their butts to put books out for loyal FANS. I liked it better when I wasn’t so popular. I liked the first year when my sales weren’t thru the roof, but I was SELLING books, not being ripped off.

Okay enough of my rant on that subject.

Today it’s time to work on that article and finish revising Research Required, unless something else pops up.

Oh and I’m excited I started a new story, currently titled Dante’s Desire. I’m only 5 pages in, but it feels good to be writing again. A new year and a fresh start.

I received a rejection for now with Research Required. It needs some revising. It seems I forgot to make my hero likable halfway through. She’s right. I did forget to turn him around and make him lovable. I had the hot sex down! LOL

I’ll be working on that Monday. I have too much other stuff to concentrate on now. I’m still finishing the last sex scene for Naughty Cupid due Jan 1.

It’s hard to believe that a year ago I was sitting in my sunroom watching television and the snow falling outside, when an email popped into my inbox. It was from Aspen Mountain Press. It was around eight pm and I had had a long day. I remember thinking “Great another rejection to end the day”. With trepidation I opened the email, but was totally surprised to find a contract!

The rest of the evening was a whirlwind. I was contacted an hour later by my new editor who wanted to get working on the book ASAP. It was only 19 days til Christmas and they wanted to get the story out for the holidays.

It’s funny, that first book was the one that needed the least editing. I still remember thinking “Wow, this whole process is a piece of cake”. I’ve since learned it’s not!

Today I’m sharing a tidbit from Mistletoe Studs, the story that started it all for me. With the holidays just around the corner, this story will warm you up on a cold winter’s night!

Oh and for fun let’s have a contest. I’ll give one lucky commenter a copy of Mistletoe Studs in celebration of my ONE year anniversary!

Blurb:

Meg Trainor has one wish for Christmas every year: Two men who will fulfill all her fantasies. Santa’s in a giving mood this year. Brothers and co-owners of Turquoise Toys, Brad and Shane Griffin will give her a Christmas she’ll never forget.

Excerpt:

Meg couldn’t believe her eyes. These were not the toys she had imagined. She thought he was talking about children’s toys. These were not intended for children. These were adult toys in every sense of the word. There were floggers, paddles, butt plugs, ball gags, straps with dildos attached and handcuffs—all Turquoise, explaining the name. Meg wasn’t naive about the BDSM world. When she realized her desire to submit she wanted to know the who, what, where and why. She read everything she could about the subject. She knew enough about it to understand.
She’d even bought a few toys to experiment with. Like the ping pong paddle she’d purchased when she was curious to know what it felt like to be spanked. It wasn’t something she did regularly but when she was in the mood for a good orgasm she’d slap her cheeks a few times before using her favorite vibrator. She never had dated a man who was actually part of that world.
Brad was gay so he wouldn’t be offering. What a shame because she could see them having fun together!
Could he be carrying a bagful of goodies? Maybe Santa was going to be extra special to her this year.
Please Santa I’ve been a good girl all year long. Please tell me you sent Brad with something extra special for my stocking this year.
Halfway though the job, Meg decided it was time to go back to her stranger. He’d been out there long enough. By now, he knew she was aware of his secret.
Turning she ran smack into his broad chest again. “We really need to stop meeting like this.” Clearing her throat, she took a step back only to come against the copier. “I was just coming out to see you.”
He stepped closer, closing the small gap between them. “How are you doing?” His voice dripped with desire.
“Fantastic. Your copies are just about done.”
Damn she wished he’d step back. He was much too close. He turned her on.
“Are you sure?” He traced his finger along her cheek.
She gulped, her body overheating.
He bent closer, taking her lips. He kissed her slowly. She melted against him; her arms snaked around his neck. He touched her breast, causing a moan to escape her lips. His bulge brushed against her. He wanted her.
While he kissed her, his fingers unzipped the back of her dress then unsnapped her bra. He pushed the garments down around her waist, exposing her breasts.
His mouth covered her nipple, sucking until it puckered. God his mouth felt good. How long had it been since a man had his mouth on her? Too long. Lisa was right; she needed to get laid, but not by Kenny.
When Brad moved to the other breast she thought for sure she was going to crumble to the floor. Her hands gripped the edges of the copier to steady herself.
“I’m going to fuck you Meg, right now.

When it comes to editing a story I’ll do just about anything ELSE. Like yesterday. I planned to edit a story that I should have completed in October. Instead, I wrapped Christmas gifts, cleaned, slept, you name it. What I didn’t do was edit.
Today I set out to edit. Opened the folder with the story and immediately showered and went grocery shopping. Came home put everything away and my son woke up. Yay! I grabbed him and had him climb into the attic to get the Christmas decorations. Found everything I was looking for, except boxes to wrap clothes. This set me off in search of those boxes I just knew I had somewhere. I finally located them. Okay, time to edit.
I did sit down and edited all but the last chapter. Hopefully tonight after dinner I can finish and send it off to my editor. I’m still hoping for those last 2 contracts before the end of the year. But I have to submit “something” to get a contract. Funny how that works.
I’m also have to finish writing a short for a January 1st deadline. I’m about 3k away.

Tomorrow I have a new release from Aspen Mountain Press – Heat Waves! I’ll post all the info tomorrow.
Time to cook dinner!

I’ve been pirated. I guess I should be happy it took nearly a year, but I’m not. It happened over the weekend. Thanks to the wonderful Google alerts I learned Mistletoe Studs and Splashing Good Time were stolen. Over the last year my heart has gone out to all my friends who had to experience this feeling of dread. As a writer I know how much of their blood, sweat and tears go into writing a book. To have it stolen by these f*cking a$$holes is just frustrating. Now it’s my turn to experience it firsthand.
On a lighter note the DH and I enjoyed six days off. It was wonderful visiting with family and friends in NY. My mother and her desire to brag about her published daughter told my eighty-three year old grandfather about my books. His SO decided to Google me and although my mother had warned her it was racy, they were appalled. So much so my grandfather wanted to know when was the last time I read the Bible. Guess I know what I’ll be getting for Christmas! LOL
On our trip back we got a call informing us that my FIL was rushed to the hospital. They weren’t sure what was wrong with him. it’s not easy driving three hours worrying about a loved one. They were worried it could be a heart attack, stroke or his MS. Turns out it was only a kidney stone. I know I shouldn’t say “only” because I’m sure when he passes it he’ll know what any woman who has delivered a baby feels like. But it could’ve been worse.
Spent a great day with the granddaughter Saturday. Sunday we decorated the front yard. The people who live across the street hate when we decorate. They think we go overboard. I’ll have to post a pic soon. It’s really not that much. Yesterday we got to see a movie – 2012. I enjoyed it, but that’s all I’m going to say about it.
I can’t believe it’s December and Nano is over. While I didn’t reach my 50k goal I’m pleased with what I accomplished. I barely did any writing while away this time. Oh well.
Back to work today! Hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday.

The Nest by GS Wiley

Blurb:

Jay McIntyre’s main goal in life is to keep his younger siblings together and away from Social Services, who he’s certain will separate them if they know his mother left two years ago. Juggling two jobs and the responsibility of caring for three children, the nineteen year old’s problems are compounded when Jess, his younger sister, begins to rebel and when an old enemy is released from prison and returns to his housing estate.

Review:

I’m a big fan of GS Wiley’s writing and this particular offering is perhaps my favorite of her books. It’s not perfect but the writing is evocative and there is so much potential in this story, I really wish this had turned into a meaty, in depth novel. Instead Wiley keeps the story light and almost too easy in spots, but the texture and character given to the story and writing are engaging and inviting. This more of a literary novella with gay characters than a gay romance and it’s not erotica at all. Wiley doesn’t really write erotica – I remember I actually blushed when she wrote “cock” in one of her books, I so don’t associate that with Wiley – and those that are expecting any sex scenes or a strong romance may be disappointed.

The plot revolves around a nineteen year old who has had to take care of his family for the past few years since his mom abandoned them. Forced to grow up at a young age, Jay works two jobs and struggles to provide for his family – 16 y/o Jess, 9 y/o Zoe, 5 y/o Nico – as he deals with the police and old rivals in a low income housing unit. Jay gets unexpected help from a new to the patrol Police Constable, Brendan.

The story itself is rather light even though it tackles some big issues with great potential. There is the main character of Jay who is struggling with two jobs, three kids, and no time for a life himself. Complicating matters is the oldest girl, Jess, who is rebelling in a heavy goth phase and getting into bad company. Both Jay and Jess get involved in some difficult situations involving drugs and violence. On a positive note, none of these issues are depressing or bring down the light, easy flow and pace to the book. On the negative side is that none of these issues are fully fleshed out. Each is hinted out briefly and eventually pseudo-resolved but none are really given the time, attention, and depth they deserve. Their potential is barely skimmed with the easy handed manner in which they are treated. This story is filled with enough material for a much longer book and it’s disappointing that the choice was made to keep the story light and short.

The characterization is similarly skimmed with much more waiting to be explored. The story is told in third person, alternating from Jay and Brendan’s point of views. Jay is a complicated mess from his determination to do right for his family to his elemental fear of failing, his distrust of the police and his neighborhood. All of this combines to give a complex, intricate character that is shown in his day to day life but skims over the emotional road bumps. Even the scene where Jay is explaining to Brendan why his mother left is oddly detached with an almost clinical information dump. This pivotal scene lacks an emotional connection between the men that shimmers beneath the surface. The chemistry between the two is there, but never given full attention. Part of this is that the book also focuses on Brendan’s failed relationship and finally accepting his attraction to the younger Jay. Since the two have so few scenes together, the connection exists in their minds more so than their action and the story ends as soon as the two show a possible future.

So while there are clearly some issues with the story, what shines so brightly is the tight writing, great setting, and true texture in the story. There are small choices such as prose or dialogue that truly immerse the reader in the setting and the cracked sidewalks, depressing jobs, and threads of hope. The secondary characters from the neighbors to the other constables, even Brendan’s mother are interesting and almost given too much space at the expense of the main characters. The book draws you in with the small details, such as the scene with Jay scared for his life contemplating a knife but knowing what it would mean for his family if he got caught. The word choice gives an authentic feel and tone to the story where unfamiliar words or phrases don’t feel awkward and misplaced as so often happens in books.

Although I think this novella has the potential to become a truly stunning book, the story is still well written with great characters, an authentic setting, and the thread of hope and romance. The focus on the characters and how Brendan and Jay meet could set this duo up for a sequel and if so, I hope the issues and characters are fully explored and developed to their limits. I’d recommend this book to those who are looking for a solid story about gay characters, but don’t expect any sex or a lot of romance. I don’t mind but others may so be sure to read this when you’re in the mood for something easy.

I’ve been slacking with my blog lately, I know. I’ve been writing like crazy though, so that’s a good thing right? Writing means possible new releases in my future.
Speaking of new releases I FINALLY received my release date for Heat Waves – Dec 4th!! Still no cover yet.
I’m sooo excited. I’ll have two releases in December.

I’m happy to say I finished book three of the Lady Shea’s Manor series over the weekend and began writing book one. I’m confident I’ll get this one done by months end and I’ll work on book two in December, along with Laney’s Delights. I’m really excited about writing that story. I had to put it aside to work on other stuff. Oh crap and I forgot I have a Jan 1 deadline for a Valentine short. That’s half done so I’ll be working on that next month too.

I had a great idea for a St. Patrick’s Day story, but think I’ve missed the deadlines for that. There’s always next year. It’s almost time to start thinking summer stories. Hmmmm, I love the warm weather.

This past week has been quite busy. I received three assignments on the same day and all of them were due in one or two weeks. Luckily, I had nothing better to do.

Divided Hearts by Terry O’Reilly is a sequel to Awakening recently published by Aspen Mountain Press. Therefore, I wanted to give Divided Hearts a similar design as the cover I did for Awakening. I was able to use the same colors, textures, and font which really connected the designs. Even better, I found stock photos that fit in a similar layout as the first book. All this combined to create a recognizable connection between the two books. Even though this design was fairly simple it took me about 4 hours to complete the full res design.

Artifact by Melody Knight is one of my favorite designs so far. Part of the story takes place in New Zealand where the couple has some fun in a geothermal pool. I found the photo of the couple kissing and thought it would be great for a muted background. Merged with the image of the hot spring surrounded by trees it creates depth and adds to the sexy feel.

For the foreground, I chose the image of the nude female back. I smoothed the skin using a smudge technique I recently learned and adjusted the shadows and highlights with the burn/dodge tool. I also added some extra strands of hair to give it a wilder, realistic look. For the title, I added an outer glow in a soft green tone. Needless to say, this took a lot of time and was a lot of work but I really like how it turned out.

Another favorite design of mine is for Ominous Night by Tania Walsh, soon to be published by Mystic Moon Press. This short story is about a woman who hunts mutants. The author gave me some great descriptions of the setting and character and I did my best to create them. The background is an old building (supposed to be a dingy pub) surrounded by a wrought iron fence. I found the gate image, cleaned it up, darkened it a bit, and placed it in front of the building.

In the original foreground image, the woman had blonde hair and a pink t-shirt. I used the soft light function to change her hair color. Then I selected the pink shirt using the magnetic lasso tool. First, I desaturated the selection then I adjusted the hue/saturation with the colorize box selected. Using the burn/dodge tool I adjusted the highlights and shadows before rendering an light source.

I am extremely pleased with how this design turned out. I hope the author loves it as much as I do.

Jackie Smart was a very fun cover to design. It was a simple color change but it took a while to find exactly the right image. The author wanted a woman unbuttoning her blouse to show the top of her red bra.

The original image was pink and blue and not at all the image of a sophisticated business woman.

The scene was supposed to take place in a seedy sort of bar so I added atmosphere by inserting a bar scene in the background. You can’t really see it but it helps give the right feeling. The final addition, and I think the best part of the cover, was the font and placement of the title. Obviously, I matched the color to her bra which I think gives it that extra Umph! I have to say it is one of my favorite covers so far.

For A Taste of Summer Magic I followed the suggestion of the author and publisher to have the two men as images in the steam of a cauldron. In this story the heroine practices Wicca and in one scene she casts a spell.

I played with a number of different compositions and stock photographs but eventually settled on the one to the right. I liked having the female in the foreground and in the photo I chose the woman had such a flirtatious lustful look I thought it was perfect.

I used swirl brushes on overlay and set to a low transparency on the bottom and in the corners. These gave the cover an extra magical feeling that highlighted the font.

Both the authors and the publishers were very happy with the end results of both designs.

Awakening by Terry O’Reilly

This cover was my second historical gay romance, they must be the most difficult genre to work with. The first reason being the lack of quality stock art. It is hard enough to find homosexual stock photos but when you add the historical element it is almost impossible. For that reason I needed to cheat a bit with this one.

The story takes place in Massachusetts in the colonial period (1735), one of the characters is a teacher with light colored hair and a slender build and the other is a master cooper, slightly tan with dark hair and a broad build. I think the models I chose fit the description well.

I cleaned the edges using my graphics tablet. Next, I changed them from RGB to black & grey to get rid of the original coloring then I switched back to RGB and used the color selector to get their skin tone the right color. Next, I positioned them and used a variety of layers set to overlay, darken, or soft light to give the right contrast and a more antique look.

To give a more historical feel I found an image of a antique writing which I experimented with but ultimately used only on the background figure.

All in all, I think it is a really nice design and though it may not scream historical it certainly doesn’t shout contemporary either.

Heat Waves

Blurb:

Ever wonder about the face behind the voice of a radio DJ?

Nina Walters has. She can’t get enough of disc jockey Ty’s sexy baritone. He has her masturbating to his voice daily. When he challenges his listeners to a contest Nina can’t resist the challenge, the opportunity and will use every advantage she has or can find.

Ty is offering a dream date, with him, to one lucky winner. He’s positive no one will guess the answer correctly. So, when Nina does he’s floored. Being a man of his word, he goes through with the date. Sparks fly, but secrets linger. Will their heat for one another be enough to ride the waves of deception?

Excerpt:

“So are you tired?” she asked, lifting his shirt and running her fingers up his stomach.
Was he tired? How could he possibly be tired with such a sexy woman stirring his manhood awake?
“Depends. What did you have in mind?” he teased.
“A little of this.” She reached up and kissed his neck, while her hand worked the button of his jeans. “And a little of this.” She nibbled on his earlobe, rendering him useless.
He grabbed her and tossed her down on the seat. “I’m not tired in the least,” he said, tugging at her shirt. “I want to devour you.”
She squirmed under his touch. “I’m feeling a little sleepy.” She faked a yawn.
Ty loved a challenge. “You can go to sleep, but first let me show you what you’ll be missing.”
He brought his lips down on her breast. He felt the bud hardening under the heat of his breath. His fingers roamed her soft skin, searching for the other breast. When he reached his destination he tweaked the nipple between his fingers. She closed her eyes.
“Very sleepy.”
She was going to play that way, was she? He’d show her tired. Lifting her shirt over her head, she didn’t resist him, but she didn’t assist him either. Laying like dead weight she continued with her pretend sleep. But Ty knew it was only a matter of time before she stopped faking and joined in on the fun.
With her shirt off and her bra opened, he worked on shrugging her out of her jeans. It wasn’t easy, but he managed. Now she lay fully exposed – an open invitation to do whatever he pleased to her.
He placed gentle kisses on her flat stomach. Tiny hairs stood on edge, her skin prickled under his touch. She was becoming aroused. He could smell it in the air. He admired her perfectly trimmed pussy as he made his way to prove his point. As he drew closer to her pussy her arousal became more pronounced.
Sleeping, my ass. Let’s see you sleep through this.
