I’m feeling generous today. Offering up two images. This one is titled Through the Window of Winters’ Decay. Taken inside an old abandoned barn near the Towpath trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National park. The Valley Bridle Trail goes right past this barn. A Beautiful walk when the grounds not to mushy. I’m really please with how the lighting and exposure worked for this image.

I’ve long been interested in the abstracts that are right at our feet — those images that we drive by, park by, walk by or even walk over. This one, titled At Your Feet #10, is from a parking lot where I usually park to go on my morning walk. I’ve always loved the combination of yellow, black, and white.

This poem has been revised many times. It is getting much closer to what I want it to be. Yes, I used to ride motorcycles. I wrecked several times, including a crash where my bike stuck into the side of a Ford Escort and I flew over, landing in the road. By the time I came back to consciousness, the emergency crew had arrived. A full-face helmet saved my head (and life). I had many other close calls. Clearly, God preserved my life each time as he continued to pursue me by his mercy and grace. In a very real way, he rode with me. In an earlier version of this poem I said, “Only he could look me in the eyes at speeds of 80 and above.” He never backed down or gave up on me. This poem, one of the first I ever wrote, continues to be an encouraging reminder of my Savior’s faithfulness. I hope it encourages you as well. Thanks for reading.

I remember the asphalt…how it let me
live outside the lines on a bike.
I remember a rowdy night-spot
where speed got up to pick a fight.
My bright wheels cannot forget: boots,
a leather jacket, and turns
that made me lean down to the pegs.
The boundary blurred
till hardtop hit like hard times.

I recall the throttle: a twist and clutch
made emblems in the road.
It sounded good, but ditches stood
nearby; the pavement took its toll.
Parking lots demanded wheelies.
I never did say no to them.
Close calls, falls, and crashes…
some could lay it down, but I wrecked.
My graceful arc crossed double lines.

Still, I did not slow the pace. Then,
one day a graceful rider caught me.
How he chased! How his engine raced!
He had new tires and tattoos of fire.
His eyes were like mirrors,
and when I looked I shattered.
But to each piece he whispered;
for every shard he stood and shouted.
His voice could not be unkind.

He made pursuit his standard.
His hands, like living stone, never tired.
I rolled with bent desires,
but he anticipated every deviation.
He determined my progress;
he broke my bones, then mended.
I fled, until he pierced and purchased,
until he caught me with the look of love…
a look that saw a man born blind.

He gripped when my will failed.
He healed my road-rash knees.
He knew my make and model.
He saw parts no one sees.
Now I listen as gears make changes—
as rubber on roadway moves me
and I approach new signs and places.
As chain and sprocket go humbly
beneath, a narrow road unwinds.
I had a chance to see a previous installation by Rackowe at B/W, just half a block from INIVA in London, and it was fantastic. This new work will be covered in bitumen, which, as it turns out, might be asphalt. I imagine the heat, light, and smell will be moving.

I smell things. Most things, in fact. If I’m eating something new, guaranteed I’m going to sniff it before I put it in my mouth. I smell people too. And yes, I will judge you based on that smell. The same goes for houses, laundry, cars, pets, new electronics, locker rooms…I always inhale.

The following are my top 10 smells. I defy you to come up with a superior list.

1. Toast.

2. Hot asphalt that has been sprayed with a hose. Preferably in the summer, preferably while washing your car and listening to classic rock.*

*It’s my list. I’ll be as specific as I want.

3. Rain.

4. Grass; this includes freshly-cut grass as well as wild grass that has been baking under the sun all day.

5. Any baked good containing apples.

6. Jasmine.

7. Men’s deodorant.

8. Woodsmoke.

Well, Topical Storm (or is it just a depression now?) Ida is doing its best to ruin everyone’s fun these past couple of days. So I figured it would be a good occasion to dig through some photos I took several months back on a rainy evening.

These photos came about when I was living in Maryland, but hanging out with good friends in Virginia. I would come over pretty regularly and every time I left at night I would be struck by how the shadows from the street lights looked as they were being cast across the road.

One night, after I had moved back to VA, I decided I would venture out and take some fun, long exposure, night shots. Thankfully, it had rained earlier that night, giving the asphalt a wonderful sleek look. Not only that, but it caused the asphalt to catch and reflect the light even better than it would have if it were dry.

I will admit, I definitely took the less is more approach on this batch. However, like I said, It’s much better to only show the good shots than to show a bunch of half decent photos and let the really good ones get drowned out.

Maybe one of these days I’ll get around to only taking amazing photos.

Enjoy!

It allowed me to make the point that sometimes the best photographs are right at our feet. It’s so easy to just make images at eye-level, because that’s the way we look at the world most times. So, we simply raise the camera to where our eyes are and make the image. But sometimes, it’s important to look up or look down, or even better move up or get lower. Great images are not just made from one single perspective and it sometimes takes a “student” to remind the “teacher” of just that fact.

Stones. Billions of little stones piled thick and spread thin across uneven ground as if to hide the fault lines. Leveled, they are tumbled, some crumbled together a layer upon layers of would-be memories. And then in the heat of summer, they spray to fortify and the ground slowly hardens to a walkable black crust. Then the gloss of the tar. Then the yellow lines. Then we move point B from point A with no point but the inertia of wanting that thing that just wasn’t where we were.

And then over time, a miraculous truth pushes itself up. A miraculous and relentless truth pushes itself up through the piles and fortitude and glossing over and coded directions. And the truth will have its way. And the truth will crack every stretch of hiding. And the truth makes the most beautiful thing out of asphalt, don’t you think?

Kerosene is a kind of oil that is used as a fuel for jet engines and for burning in lamps and in stoves—especially camping equipment—for lighting or cooking.

Most kerosene comes from petroleum, the oil that comes from oil wells.

Petroleum is a mixture of many materials. Separating petroleum into its many parts is called refining” it.

At an oil refinery, the petroleum is heated until the kerosene part changes into a vapor. The hot kerosene vapor is drawn off and condensed back into its liquid form. The kerosene is processed to make it pure.

Other fuels, such as gasoline and diesel oil are refined from petroleum in the same manner as kerosene.

Petroleum also provides oil and greases for machinery lubrication and asphalts for paving highways.

Kerosene is often called “coal oil” because kerosene was first obtained by refining the oil from coal.
