I “met” Thadd through ModelMayhem. He’s one of the small group of people on the site who’s not just interested in shooting glossy glam photos all the time. He’s up for a different kind of challenge.

We talked a bit via email and conspired to meet to shoot together. I invited Richard and a buddy of mine, Nia, to come along and the four of us checked into a motel on the southside of Richmond for a few hours. We shot for a little over 4 hours and came away with a lot of cool stuff.

We grabbed lunch at a pizza joint nearby and parted ways by the early afternoon. We’re totally gonna cook up something else to work on together and do it again. We all had a blast.

I’m learning some post process from Richard — little things about cleaning up edges in images and working with skin tones. A recent one is putting these bars on the tops and bottoms of images to make a more cinematic feel. I’m thrilled for the tutelage and pleased with my results so far. Look for a few more images from this series as the week goes by.

Just a quick post here of various bits and bobs. none really worthy of a full post so they are all clumped together here.I have two posts ongoing just now – one is another fiction story my Master set me… I love writing them, so hopefully not too long before that is ready. the other – well, that all depends on if my Master will allow it to be public *grins* but is regarding a recent roundtable on submissive guide regarding financial control. It posed a few questions that i would like to write about.

Well, the past few days have been awful. I finally have my email account back under my Master’s and my own control – for what good that is now. I am beyond being angry now, i never can hold anger for long with anyone. I am just immensely upset and hurt at losing some emails that were very precious to me. To have someone, for whatever reason they had, delete without thought…. I love my Master with all my heart and soul. He has been my rock these past few days – as always. Someone reminded me recently that everything happens for a reason and suggested that if old memories are lost, maybe this is the opportunity to make new ones. Those words have made a lot of sense.. When I remember to remember them that is! lol – when I don’t remember I feel myself slipping into despair again.

I am hoping to make a rosary soon. The little scrotum has sort of screwed a lot of things up thanks to my emails going missing, but I have been thinking of making a rosary for a while now. Master said he thought it was a good idea when I spoke to him last week about it. my personal view is to make one that reflects and i personal to me alone. So when complete, it will be a mixture of both religious prayer and slave prayer. I have almost got it set in my mind, but I will be drawing it out for my Master first and his decision on the prayers. He has already suggested a few for me to think about.

Master shocked me yesterday. He had said something a few weeks ago about a rule he was thinking of.. He never said at the time (I don’t think…) of when he was thinking of putting it in place! I was told yesterday….

As of 1st January 2010 I will have to ask permission to masturbate.

Now. I know this one is going to be hard…. okay.. Honestly I really don’t know if i can achieve this; it’s not as if those things are planned or set on a schedule or anything….

Yeah, this one I am very nervous about – for a number of reasons. But my Master has set the rule and given a date for it starting, I will abide by his rules as always. I am hoping it will not take me long to get used to asking for permission… and I don’t want to fail him – I don’t like that feeling. and there is another reason I am very nervous about which is I have always been a very sexual and spontaneously sexually active person.. and not all masturbation equates to orgasm – to dispell one myth – I for one, as a member of the female sex, find it difficult to reach orgasm alone. I need a Man.. *grins* a Man’s touch… Mmmm. Yum..

Anyway.
To wait until I can speak to my Master… to find the guts to ask him… and yes, potentially have my request refused. I am nervous about losing my sex drive. This rule will take me somewhere I have never been before. To be honest I am downright dreading it!

I am on the other hand excited about seeing how this one pans out… Part of me is looking forward to asking my Master’s permision. Of relying on him for that as well. Of being that little bit more dependant on his will…

If that little scrotum has shown me one thing alone, it would be that although my Master’s emails are important to me, my Master is my world. I love him far deeper and more completely than anyone. He has taken me to uncharted waters already and continues to do so every day. Nothing, NO ONE will destroy my love for him. No one can take away from me how my Master makes me feel.

So.. new year, new rules, new days dawning.

Its on its way.
God willing, that 4500 miles and bloody big pond will get a little smaller this coming year. God willing, someday soon I will be with my Master.

Footnote from Master Aeros: I have since changed the new rule slightly as I do not want my kajira to have the fear of losing her slave fire. So if she does masturbate in the morning, anytime after that she will have to ask permission. As in all I do, I take in the considerations and fears of my kajira and try to work around them so that she may be able to serve more fully and completely without fear or doubt.

It’s been stressful enough, but now I have one less final to take. My American Politics final went well. I think. I knew about 80% of the questions, so I’m hoping I got an 80 or higher. John Mayer’s latest album may have been one of the most anticipated albums of the year.  When Battle Studies finally became available in November, almost exactly two years since the release of Continuum, many people were wondering how the album was going to measure up to Continuum.  I think that John said it best when he talked about how he thought Battle Studies would follow the album that many said defined his career as a musical genius, and he said he was not looking to follow Continuum, but rather, he had left Continuum where it was, and went on a different path for Battle Studies. JM did just that, as he recorded this album as an “in-house” project and truly surrounded himself with what he was searching to create.  For those of you that may not know much about in-house albums, check out the videos on his blog.  You will be amazed at everything he put into creating his latest hit sensation.

After looking through the digital booklet that came with my download, I am very impressed with the great detail that John Mayer goes into creating more than an album by making it a true piece of art.  Besides the picture being one of his best, he  physically takes on the idea of a battle by wearing a classic WWII bomber jacket.  He also titles the booklet “Department of Mayer Music Field Manual” and has a military style code over it that says “ITLP JM-001.”  The album icon of a circle with a heart-broken.  The white space in between the two halves of the heart is a lightning bolt and the entire graphic is made to look like a unit patch or symbol that was painted on WWII fighter planes.

The table of contents of the album has a noun before each song (in italics next to the title of the song) that describes the main theme of the track, and they make the album read more like a book.  The listener dives right into the story and finds connection with the “characters” and their words .  JM made sure there was not much confusion about where he was getting his lyrics from and what was driving the meaning of his work.  Without further ado, here is the breakdown of Battle Studies:

1) Heartbreak Warfare (Combat): A great introduction to the album.  The song starts with a theater feel as you almost hear the sounds of an orchestra warming up for a big production.  Layered over that is the sound of people chattering, which is what has followed JM throughout his life, but more so the past two years of his star status.  Heartbreak Warfare dives right into an issue that everyone has battled with at least once, and it really addresses the problems that everyone has in relationships.

“If you want more love, why don’t you say so?“

Heartbreak warfare is a combat that we all face every day.  JM takes this issue that many have problems expressing, and he puts it into such eloquent words with a melody and rhythm that reflects the internal and external combat we have in trying to make relationships work:

“How come the only way you know how high you get me, Is to see how far I fall?  God only knows how much I’d love you if you let me, but I can’t break through it all.”

It’s a song with universal appeal, and it has taken over as a radio hit single:

“Disappointment has a name, it’s heartbreak, heartbreak.”

2) All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye (Extraction): This next track follows up on where Heartbreak Warfare finishes.  It’s the place and time where your relationship has crumbled, and you finally think that you’re at the place where you can take the next step alone, but life works its mysterious ways, and something about that person enters back in your life.

“Just When I had you off my head, Your voice comes thrashing through my quiet bed.  You say you want to try again, But I’ve tried everything but giving in.”

All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye takes a softer approach on the issue, and the emphasis on the acoustic guitar and slow melody plays the perfect picture of the trying to convince yourself to not give that second, third, or fourth chance.  It is about the difficulty of not giving in and extracting the negative relationship our of your life.  JM’s blues solo will impress and surprise everyone, and it was the perfect way to break up the repetitive chorus.

“Why am I gonna let you try when, All we ever do is say goodbye”

3) Half of My Heart (Evasion): The album picks up with a toe tapping rhythm that will have every listener moving his/her head or tapping his/her hand.  It tells a story about a free roaming man who gets halted on his free-spirit journey by a girl who will turn his world upside down.  JM talks about not being able to love anyone else and only loving yourself.  It’s a hard thing to “get a grip on the situation” when someone changes everything you know, and you can’t seem to get back to where you were because you like what you now have.  I think it’s a place that a lot people find themselves, but the important thing is letting that person in your life and realizing your lonely journey is supposed to come to an end.

“Lonely was the song I sang, ‘Til the day you came, Showing me another way, And all that my love can bring.”

On a sidenote: this song is a duet with Taylor Swift, which was a smart move on Mayer’s behalf.  T.Swift has become the biggest sensation this year, and if there is anyway to make a song a hit across multiple generations and genres, it is by including her on the track.  I think this song would be a hit regardless of Swift, but she adds the perfect female voice by stepping away from her country roots.

4) Who Says (Interrogation): The song has a folkish appeal that is peaceful and thoughtful.  As the original solo from the album, I think it really surprised people upon its release.  Many listeners got a sour tongue when they heard JM say the word “stoned.”  The people in that group need to lighten up and lay off a little bit because they will really miss a deeper message of the track by getting caught up on the idea of JM being high.  We are constantly feeling interrogated by people.  We are always being asked what we are doing, where we are going, who we want to be, what we want to do.  For a culture that is very narcissistic, we’re also very nosy about everyone else’s business.  JM takes this interrogation and questions it, and he basically says who is really telling me what I can and cannot do.  Society only dictates what you allow it to dictate.

“Who says I can’t be free, From all of the things that I used to be, Rewrite my history, Who says I can’t be free.”

5) Perfectly Lonely (Survival): Another pickup in tempo, but that doesn’t change the depth of the issue.  The song has a lot of intricate jazz and blues guitar work, which really brings JM to the heart of what he does really well.  The lyrics work well with the jazz/blues appeal, and it’s definitely a side step from the pop rock acoustic work that general radio listeners are used to hearing. 

“Nothing to do, no one but me, And that’s all I need, I’m perfectly lonely.”

Perfectly Lonely really is all about survival.  It is about finding the path that you want and taking it, but it also reflects the idea of trying to make yourself believe that you’re okay with being alone.  It’s the double edge sward that everyone will face; are you better off alone, or are you just convincing yourself that you’re okay by yourself?  There are times in life when it is better to be “perfectly lonely,” but be open to the idea of surviving with someone.

“And this is not to say, There never comes a day, I’ll take my chances and start again, And when I look behind, On all my younger times, I’ll have to thank the wrongs, That led me to a love so strong.”

6) Assassin (Concealment): My personal favorite on this album.  The song opens with some percussion work that many people aren’t accustomed to hearing in modern music.  JM doesn’t hold back with his voice on this track, as he keeps it fairly deep, alluring, and really natural.  This track is about meeting your match.  You may play games, take names, and have fun, but there will be a day when someone will beat you at what you do best.

“I was a killer; was the best they’d ever seen, I’d steal your heart before you ever heard a thing.  I’m an Assassin and I had a job to do, Little did I know, that girl was an Assassin too.”

When that person comes along, he/she will really be the curve ball that you never saw coming.

“Suddenly I’m in over my head and I can hardly breath, Suddenly I’m floating over her bed and I feel everything, And suddenly I know exactly what I did but I cannot move a thing, and suddenly I know exactly what I’ve done and what it’s gonna mean to me, meant to me.”

At this point you have a few roads to take.  Are you going to conceal your feelings and go back to your killer instinct or are you going to finally admit defeat and thank the other Assassin that changed you?  On a musical standpoint, the electric guitar work towards the end really brings out the intensity, passion, and frustration of the situation, while also showing JM’s range of technical expertise.

7) Crossroads (Navigation): I couldn’t have picked a better song for JM to cover than Cream’s Crossroads.  Many people compare JM to Eric Clapton, and this track really shows where JM follow among the ranks of the true greats.  Listen to both, and compare the new age genius to the original master

8 ) War of My Life (Determination): War of Life steps away from the jazz and blues appeal and brings a softer and steadier melody.  Determination is the perfect word to explain where JM is going with the lyrics of this song.

“Come out angels, Come out ghosts, Come out darkness, Bring everyone you know, I’m not running, I’m not scared, I am waiting, And well-prepared.  I’m in the war of my life.”

We are all in a war of life.  Stand up and be strong.

“If fear hasn’t killed me yet, then nothing will.  All the suffering and all the pain, Never left a name.  I’m in the war of my life, At the door of my life.”

We are constantly facing trials, tribulations, grief, and criticism, but JM sends a positive message that we need to take the reigns of life and make it our own war of life.  Take his advice because you will be a lot happier when you defeat instead of facing defeat.  Do what you love, be someone you will love, and be with the ones you love.  Don’t let anything stop you from getting there.

“At the core of my life, Got no choice but to fight ’til it’s done, So fight on, Fight on everyone, Fight on, Got no choice but to fight ’til it’s done, I won’t give up, I won’t run, I won’t stop for anyone.”

9) Edge of Desire (Induced Conditions): JM slows things down, but not without purpose.

“Young and full of running, Tell me where is that taking me?  Just a great figure eight, A tiny infinity.”

Life is full of frustrations, and one of the hardest frustrations comes with not knowing where you’re going.  We are constantly doing things to get somewhere, but do any of us really know where that “somewhere” is or if we’re really just moving and making circles that ultimately lead us to where we started.  Once we find that place, person, or thing, we become afraid of losing it; not by letting it go, but by it letting us go.  We are responsible for putting action to change or keep our conditions.  With that, we are constantly pushing the “edge of desire.”  Instant gratification can turn into no gratification at all, and it’s a thin line to dance on.

“Steady  my breathing, silently screaming, I have to have you now, Wired and I’m tired, Think I’ll sleep in my clothes on  the floor, or maybe this mattress will spin on its axis, and find me on yours, Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me,  ’Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see, I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe, There I just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me.”

10) Do You Know Me (Reconnaissance): This song can go one of two ways with listeners.  They can take it very literally, and think that it is a song about two people meeting and one thinks the other is familiar.  The deeper approach dives into the idea of people really knowing who we are.  People going on a reconnaissance to actually know us as a person, who we are, what we stand for, what our passions are.  I like the second approach better because it goes deeper that the surface and hits a challenge that many people face.  Some of us spend so much time with people who we just create these comfortable situations.  Sometimes the comfort comes from the amount of time, or simply because it is something from the past that we want to hold on to.  Then one day we realize that neither person truly knows who the other is, what is in the heart of the other person, and what makes their soul fly.

“It’s just the strangest thing, I’ve seen your face somewhere, An early evening dream, A past life love affair.  Do you know me at all?”

JM takes a very soft, yet complex approach to this song.  Soft percussion symbols, deep keys, and technical acoustic picking all come together to exemplify the mystification that comes out of that “strange feeling.”

11) Friends, Lovers Nothing (Identifying the Enemy): Heavy keys, guitar work, and obvious percussion open this song with a fairly typical JM voice.

“Friends, lovers or nothing, There can only be one, Friends, lovers or nothing, There’ll never be an in-between, so give it up.”

A situation that anyone can relate to if they have ever had a friend of the opposite sex.  There is always a time where one of the friends wants to try something more than friendship, and it’s a rare occasion that the other friend agrees.  Many times this can put an end to whatever friendly relationship existed, but if you’re lucky, you will both be able to come to agreement and move on to build a stronger friendship.  Sometimes the other person will later get the same deeper feelings, and more confusion sets in.  So who is the enemy?  Is it the friendship, the love, or the friend that is stopping things from moving one way or another.

“Friends, lovers or nothing, there can only be one.  Friends, lovers or nothing, There’ll never be an in-between, so give it up.  Friends, lovers or nothing, We can really only ever be one, Friends, lovers or nothing, We’ll never be the in-between, so give it up, We’ll never be the in-between, so give it up.  Anything other than yes is no, Anything other than stay is go, Anything less than “I love you” is lying.”

We’re always trying to have our cake and eat it too and have the best of both worlds, but in a situation like this, the “in-between” is only messy and dangerous.  That “in-between” is something that doesn’t really exist because either way one person is being taken advantage and hurt.  End the games and choose a side before someone else steps in and makes the choice for you.  Don’t regret what you could have and should have had.

12) I’m On Fire (Appendix): This last track is a bonus for people who purchased the deluxe edition.  It definitely has a folk aspect with a very soft tone that has a lot of depth in the lyrics.  It is definitely worth the extra dollar to upgrade to the deluxe edition.  More John Mayer can’t hurt anyone.

Overall I have to say that John Mayer did not disappoint me with Battle Studies. He is a modern-day musical storyteller, and I really think that it is refreshing from the monotonous music that surrounds us every day.  He is not afraid to break down his own problems to help us break down our own.  This album will really humanize him to all the people who keep JM on a pedestal.  He reverts back to his true ways of songwriting and musical composition, and I have a lot of respect for someone who does what they love instead of doing what will please others.  If you haven’t already purchased the album, I highly suggest adding it to your collection.  Listen to his stories, and maybe you’ll figure out your own through his lyrics.  It’s not so much about the words that are written, but more of what is written in between them: the interpretation.  My interpretation is my own, shaped by my own experiences, so make your own stories, or just enjoy the music.  Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

This is going to be a very short post this week. You know why?
Because I’m starting to feel like this poor guy:

Admitedly, this is partially because I just finished work after working over 40 min overtime. What’s worse, it was a pretty bad paper written by a nice girl who became more and more crestfallen as we talked about the improvements needed in her paper. *MEGA SIGH*

It might also be that I haven’t seen hide nor hair of confirmation concerning the publication of an article that I recently wrote for the Local (flaky) newspaper. I’m basically having to wait till tomorrow to see if it just magically shows up in print. And I NEED this article so that I get a good grade (Verbal confirmation for the Record article just doesn’t cut it, and that Editor is flaky too.)

It also doesn’t help that loads of the papers I’ve been helping with recently are on the legality of Gay Marriage, and I disagreed with everybody. Helping people write papers that you disagree with well is difficult.

It could also be that I’m beating myself up mentally for not getting back on the writing wagon (you might have noticed the lack of info concerning Jaine since NaNoWriMo.) I plan on getting back to it right after finals, but I plan on a lot of things that never happen, so we’ll see.

Planning events for next semester (A poetry slam) is also difficult, and I’m worried that we(The Rough Writers) will just end up as poorly-attended counter programming to something the S.A. is doing.

On the plus side, I’ve been seriously enjoying Assassin’s Creed II! Take a gander at this lovely still image:
