Interpretation: The Interview

Sweat, drops, on my forehead.
Tick, tick, tick goes the seconds,
of my watch,
that grasped me like a father,
abusive and lurking,
stifling and controlling.

Urk, my throat is under the weather,
so much sweat, now even heavier.
Tonsil, swollen, mistaken,
voice box empty –
like a jar abandoned;
a message bottle with no letter.

Whizz, said the air conditioner,
helping my sweaty palms to no avail.
Clunk, i hear the white noise:
the distress does not seem like it’s only,
here, now, then.

‘James’, I heard my name.
I felt like I was in-line for the worst,
barbeque roast;
finally Hansel became surreal.
I slowly opened the door,
Creaked, the gateway to the future,
begin, began, begun.

Justitia, here in life:
finally we meet again.
and — Slash.

I have not been writing interpretations for a long long time. So i’ve decided to put an interpretation for the poem ‘The Interview’, a direct link to the poem is HERE.

Poet interpretation:
The whole purpose of putting the commas is to drag, and signify how stifling, uncomfortable the situation felt (the interview). Onomatopoeia is used in almost all the stanzas (stanza 1, 2, 3, and 4) to show how when you are anxious or uncomfortable, everything just seems louder. This meant literally and metamorphic-ally. When we wait to enter interviews, everything seems louder. Your heart beat, the sound of your sweat drops (stanza 1), even the air conditioner (Stanza 2). The stress of the ‘white noise’ and ‘air-conditioner’ was meant to say how something that usually runs really soft can even be extremely loud. This noise adds a sense of visualization and imagery for the reader to imagine himself being in the same situation. However, in a real-life situation, this is how we live. The whole poem was not just to talk about a single interview, the whole poem was to represent life as we live it. We are always anxious now and then, and when we are down everything just seems to loom, and surround us deeper, harder, stronger, more furiously. We are a lot more vulnerable than what we know, but we are ‘fine’ when we are busy. However when we are down we actually have so many problems, undercurrents that we are sometimes aware or unaware of.

The diction of father (stanza 1), lurking, stifling and controlling means to say that in life we have a sense of a ‘Big Brother’. There will always be expectations (just like most parents, or father-figure will have of us). In this post modern era, we expect a lot from ourselves, and when we don’t there will always be people who expect more from us. This heightens the tension, anxiety, stress and pressure we feel before we enter interviews or our everyday life.

For stanza 2, the rhythm of ‘voice box empty — like a jar abandoned; a message with no bottle’. This lower part is actually explaining the upper part. When your voice box is empty, you feel as though you get cut, as though you have something to say, or don’t know what to say, and therefore you cannot speak. Like a jar abandoned: the diction here is also pretty significant. Jars are usually supposed to be useful, to contain something. However because the voice box is empty, the jar losses its greatest purpose to contain anything that is useful or important. Therefore it is abandoned, just like how we would be if we fail to meet expectations. We are shocked (which cause us to be speechless), and we become useless.

As mentioned in the first paragraph of the interpretation, the poem was actually directly talking about an interview, but indirectly symbolizing life. This is why the words ‘begin, began, begun’ in stanza 4. The interview was about to begin, but actually life had already been this stressful and pressurizing (began). And despite all of this, the stress level would continue onward as we live (begun). The alliteration and sense of movement, association and link also signify how the poem is supposed to be related to life with its red thread.

Last but not least, stanza 5 talks about Justitia. Justitia is a greek goddess of justice. I have always been fond of using characters (mythical, or not), personalities, peoples or believes to be incorporated in my poems. This is because I like the transference of their essence and significance or symbolism to be incorporated to that part of the stanza or the entire poem. Honestly, this interest had begun when I was 17 as I started reading ‘A Room With a View’. The book contained many associations of people, cities, paintings etc. Furthermore, I’ve been to museums in France and Jakarta to see history artifacts, paintings that reminds me of the poems that I’ve read and associated these objects or characters with. Justitia here is used to signify how the interviewer determines the justice of the person in the poem. How the person has entered the room and will be ‘slashed’. The rhythm of the last stanza was also intended to be abrupt, because in life we tend to be down or ‘attacked’ at times when we least expect it. This effect was heightened by how stanza 1-4 tends to have the same length, yet stanza 5 is conclusive and short. The diction ‘finally we meet again’ is theme of how the poem is supposed to be related to life. Although the interviewer has never meet the interviewee, the individual of the poem has ‘met’ this justice-giving figure because in life we always will meet such circumstances. Because of my religious believe (Christianity), I also believe that in our after-life we would be judged according to our acceptance of Christ, and also based on our actions. There will be rewards for those who does more, and punishment for those who deserve it. This part also re-emphasize how the poem should link to our real-life interviews, but also our on-going aspect and perspective of life.

I’ve been living for two years in Sweden and it has been a privilege to be part of the Mexican

I’ve been living for two years in Sweden and it has been a privilege to be part of the Mexican Association in Gothenburg, a very successful cultural organization that aims to gather the mexicans around the most important celebrations of the year.

It has been a pleasure to see it evolve: When I came to Gothenburg it was already working really good and I felt welcome immediately. The less I could do was to try to give it back some effort, because, let’s face it… mexicans love parties and get together!

So here I make a small review of my work for the association, and let’s also say… it has been very well received both by swedish and mexican public. You can even see also the evolution of the first event that had still some of their stile and guidelines to the latest images that have been entirely my own creation.

Truly I can say that this trip through images has been also for me, to pamper a bit my roots and to be close to my own heritage.

Hope you like it!

Some common misconceptions about renter’s insurance With so much competition among renters the

Some common misconceptions about renter’s insurance

With so much competition among renters these days, thinking about renter’s insurance can fall by the wayside when you are searching for League City homes for rent. Renter’s insurance is a type of home insurance that cover the contents of an apartment, which are not normally insured under the larger insurance policy for the apartment building or housing complex. Some renter’s insurance policies cover things like negligence of the renter and injuries to guests of the resident. If you are looking for League City rentals, it’s a good idea to consider purchasing renter’s insurance. Here are some of the common misconceptions property management companies in League City run into when talking to residents about renter’s insurance:

My landlord has insurance, so I don’t need it. If you speak with property management companies who have rentals in Galveston, they will tell you that one of the biggest misconceptions about renter’s insurance stems from ignorance about the extent to which a landlord’s policy offers coverage. Typically, a landlord with League City rentals will take out an insurance policy that covers structural damage to the building. So, if your building goes up in flames, the landlord can recoup the cost of the building, but you will be left out in the cold when it comes to your lost possessions. Even if the landlord of one of the Galena homes for rent has a policy, it most likely does not cover accidental structural damage caused by the resident. If you leave the water on and flood your downstairs neighbor, you could be liable for the clean-up and repair costs.

Renter’s insurance is too expensive. One of the first things many property management companies with rentals in Houston talk to residents about is the affordability of renters insurance. The reality is that renter’s insurance will cost you about the same as a Netflix subscription.

I don’t have anything to insure. Unless you are a modern day Francis of Assisi, you would be surprised about how quickly the value of everything in your apartment can add up. Many professionals in property management in Galena find that residents severely underestimate the value of their possessions. Consider all of your books, televisions, computers, kitchen appliances and other things and you will quickly find that a small monthly premium seems like reasonable protection for your belongings.

No matter if you are a first-time renter looking for Galena homes for rent, or you have been a long-term denizen of some of the League City homes for rent, it’s always a good time to consider renter’s insurance. If you have more questions, contact a property management company working in League City like Galveston Homes & Galveston Property Management. Property management companies in Galena have a great deal of knowledge and will help you find a renter’s insurance policy that meets your needs.

A couple of days ago one of my juniors in college (Indian Institute of Science Education and Researc

A couple of days ago one of my juniors in college (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata) found unguarded in the guest account of our computing system a spreadsheet.

This spreadsheet contained the blood types of the Masters students across five batches (‘07-‘13). With this information he made a nice little bar diagram of the frequency distribution of blood types, which I lift here:

When I looked at this graph, what I noticed first was that this contains the distribution across both the antigen type (A/B/AB/O) and the Rh factor (+/-). It struck me that it may be possible by constructing a contingency table to check whether these two properties are independent of each other.

For this I first constructed from the graph the two-way contingency table of the joint distribution of antigen and Rh factor:

↓Rh\Ag→

A

B

AB

O

Marginal totals

+

76

116

28

122

342

-

1

4

1

6

12

Marginal totals

77

120

29

128

354 (total)

Consider now the marginal distributions, i.e. the subtotals along the last row and column. If we divide these numbers through by the total number of data points (354), we obtain the relative marginal frequencies. For a large sample, this may be identified with the probabilities of occurrence of the individual properties irrespective of that of the other.

Now comes the important part. If the occurrence of these two properties are independent of each other, then the joint probability in any cell shall be the product of the marginal probabilities for that row and column (P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)). In terms of frequencies, this means that the number in any cell should be the product of the subtotals for that row and column, divided by the total (354). You can think of it this way: the frequency in any cell is the product of one of its marginal frequencies with the other relative marginal frequency (signifying the independent conditional probability). Example:

n(A+) = n(A).P(+) = n(A).n(+)/N.

Taking this assumption of independence then, it is possible to construct a contingency table inwards starting from just the outer marginal frequencies. This has been constructed below with the marginal frequencies of the actual data, and rounded to the nearest integers.

↓Rh\Ag→

A

B

AB

O

Marginal totals

+

74

116

28

124

342

-

3

4

1

4

12

Marginal totals

77

120

29

128

354
(total)

If you compare the joint frequencies in the two tables, you can see immediately that they are very close, lending support to the assumption that these factors are independent.

For a more graphical idea, I decided to plot cluster bars of the actual and the computed frequencies assuming independence.

The average error between the actual and computed frequencies was 0 over the eight blood types. That doesn’t say much because errors of opposite signs reduce the net effect. The root mean squared error was 1.16, which too is tiny in comparison to the frequencies themselves.

Thus, it is pretty safe to suppose that the antigen and the Rh factor are uncorrelated properties.

There are stronger, more explicit tests of association than what has been done here. The usual correlation coefficient, though, cannot be calculated here because the variable (blood type) is not a quantitative one. However, there are others that you can read about here.

If you want to test this method or any of the other methods on other datasets of blood types, this page provides quite a bit of data for various countries (although last I checked, they seemed to not be completely factually correct).

Knowledge is about relations. For instance, in order to know myself, I must be aware of a set of rel

Knowledge is about relations. For instance, in order to know myself, I must be aware of a set of relationships about things in the world that relate to what we call “me.” Ourselves and the different things in the world, e.g. sounds, colors, objects, other beings and events, serve are the constituents of these relations and we can effectively use our awareness of these relations to act. In the case of, for instance, weighing risk and opportunity, we evaluate the world with respect to factors connected to our well being in attempts to at least preserve and best improve it.

By contrast, we can also use relations to describe, analyze and predict phenomena that are separate from us, such as the distance a projectile will travel when launched by a particular force at a particular angle. Although different in aim, these and other kinds of cognitive acts share a common objective. That is, they function to create relations between things that, as they are perceived, create a bank of information that is itself associated with how the world is. With this information, we then act or react based on or to conditions in the world, respectively, in light of how similar or dissimilar these sets of conditions are.

This description of knowledge emphasizes the perceived relations between and among things “inward” (“me”) and “outward” (“things in the world”). What we extract from these relations is, shortly, information. Information is constituted by “data” about the world at a point, or, in other words, a sampling of conditions at a given moment. For example, in biology, DNA in cells marked with fluorescent dye can be detected via a laser apparatus called a cell sorter. If a biologist “tags” a particular gene, say one associated with a disease, he can look at his results and determine if those cells do or do not contain a particular gene in a significant amount. In learning more about the world (namely, the DNA in the cells in the sample), the biologist gathers information about the world under particular constraints that is borne out of an awareness of the relations in the world. We can call this type of acquisition investigation.

A similar dynamic applies when one uses reflective thought or rational analysis, yet the thing the thought works on is different. In these cases, the “data” is an idea, a memory. We can call this reflection. Nevertheless, these two kinds of acts still share the common attribute of evaluating information in light of pre-existing conditions, inward and outward. So, we have two acts of thought (reflection and investigation) that function in a similar way insofar as they produce a perception of the world. Perceptions, then, have at least two types: investigative and reflective. We use investigative perception when, for example, doing science or playing a sport when evaluating conditions in light of relevant events to determine a next logical step as in the biologist’s case above or in choosing a play in the redzone. By contrast, reflective perceptions come about when examining an idea, be it a statement, theory or claim; or an episodic or semantic memory.

To increase the chance of successful resuscitation following cardiac arrest, this requires an integrated set of coordinated, sequential actions represented by a chain of links. This is known as the Chain of Survival. The links include the following:

> Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system (in Malaysia it is 999)
> Early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions
> Rapid defibrillation (using Automated External Defibrillator [AED] in the case of cardiac arrest in public places)
> Effective advanced life support
> Integrated post–cardiac arrest care (this is a new addition chain as compared to the four-chain concept in 2005 guidelines; thus recognizing the importance of ICU post-cardiac arrest including therapeutic hypothermia in selected cases)

Note that out of the five chains, three chains can be performed by the public; and in fact, most of the time, would probably be carried out by the public as they are the ones who will most likely witness the cardiac arrest on the spot. The medical professionals cannot be in every place every moment. If the public does not perform the first three chains properly, by the time the victim reaches hospital, even in the setting of best advanced life support care, and even if the emergency team successful resuscitate the victim, the quality of life the victim would probably be affected as he/she might have suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen.

This goes to show how vital public or community education and participation is to increase the chance of survival of a cardiac arrest.

After a review of the available research published over a 5 year period, the American Heart Associat

After a review of the available research published over a 5 year period, the American Heart Association released its 2010 CPR Guidelines. As expected, the focus for CPR is on good quality chest compressions. Here are the differences between the 2005 and the 2010 CPR Guidelines:
A-B-C is for babies; now it’s C-A-B!

It used to be follow your ABC’s: airway, breathing and chest compressions. Now, Compressions come first, only then do you focus on Airway and Breathing. The only exception to the rule will be newborn babies, but everyone else — whether it’s infant CPR, child CPR or adult CPR — will get chest compressions before you worry about the airway.

No more looking, listening and feeling. The key to saving a cardiac arrest victim is action, not assessment. Call 911the moment you realize the victim won’t wake up and doesn’t seem to be breathing right.Trust your gut. If you have to hold your cheek over the victim’s mouth and carefully try to detect a puff of air, it’s a pretty good bet she’s not breathing very well, if at all.I have a secret to share: paramedics have been doing it this way for years. Rarely have I seen an EMT or a paramedic put her ear to a victim’s nose and listen for air movement. We just get to work.

Push a little harder. How deep you should push on the chest has changed for adult CPR. It was 1 1/2 to 2 inches, but now the Heart Association wants you to push at least 2 inches deep on the chest.

Push a little faster. AHA changed the wording here, too. Instead of pushing on the chest at about 100 compressions per minute, AHA wants you to push at least 100 compressions per minute. At that rate, 30 compressions should take you 18 seconds.

Besides the changes under the 2010 CPR Guidelines, AHA continues to emphasize some important points:

Hands Only CPR. This is technically a change from the 2005 Guidelines, but AHA endorsed this form of CPR in 2008. The Heart Association still wants untrained lay rescuers to do Hands Only CPR on adult victims who collapse in front of them. My biggest problem with this campaign is what’s left unsaid. What does AHA want untrained lay rescuers to do with all the other victims? In other words, what do you do with the victims that aren’t adults or that didn’t collapse right in front of you? AHA doesn’t provide an answer, but I have a suggestion: Do Hands Only CPR, because doing something is always better than doing nothing.

Recognize sudden cardiac arrest. CPR is the only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest and AHA wants you to notice when it happens.

Don’t stop pushing. Every interruption in chest compressions interrupts blood flow to the brain, which leads to brain death if the blood flow stops too long. It takes several chest compressions to get blood moving again. AHA wants you to keep pushing as long as you can. Push until the AED is in place and ready to analyze the heart. When it is time to do mouth to mouth, do it quick and get right back on the chest.

basil.js is a scripting library that has been developed at the Visual Communication Institute at The Basel School of Design during the last nine months and is now made public as open-source. Based on the principles of “Processing”, basil.js allows designers and artists to individually expand the possibilities of Adobe InDesign in order to create complex projects in data visualization and generative design. Projects include linking common words to form strings of data or word “labyrinths” to isolate relationships.
