Aston Martin DBS: Am vazut-o in James Bond: Casino Royale. Stim ce poate. Dar ce este de fapt?

Raspunsul: Simplu!

Aston Martin will unveil one of the most eagerly anticipated cars of the year when the new DBS is revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 16th, where the company takes a starring role as the featured marque.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, said: “The DBS is the ultimate expression of Aston Martin’s engineering and technical ability. It offers pure performance without compromise.

“The DBS delivers the complete driving experience and bridges the gap between our road and track cars – the DB9 and DBR9.”

Equally at home on a twisting mountain circuit as on the open road, the DBS is a true thoroughbred. The Aston Martin DBS is a 6.0-liter V12 powered, race-bred, two-seater shaped by the aerodynamic demands of high performance, with an exquisite interior that marries beautifully hand-finished materials with the very latest in performance technology.

A combination of elegant design, innovative manufacturing processes, race-derived materials and components and Aston Martin’s unrivalled hand-build expertise makes the DBS a luxury sports car without equal. Every line, crease and curve conveys the enormous potential of the DBS, a seductive blend of refinement and raw power, provided by the hand-built V12 producing 510 bhp, a top speed of 191 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds.

Performance

The need for high-performance stability, handling ability and low kerb weight defined the DBS’s form and construction. Accordingly, the DBS becomes the first production Aston Martin to make extensive use of ultra-light carbon-fiber body panels. High levels of performance and control are delivered by the combination of inherent light weight, near-perfect weight distribution, a supremely powerful and flexible V12 engine, and a performance-honed six-speed transmission, together with new carbon ceramic brakes and an adaptive damper controlled suspension system.

At the heart of the DBS is a 6.0-liter V12 engine. As with all current Aston Martins, it is hand-assembled at Aston Martin’s dedicated engine facility in Cologne, Germany. The classic 6.0-liter V12 features a number of power-increasing enhancements. These include a ‘by-pass’ engine air intake port that opens above 5500 rpm to allow more air into the engine, and re-profiled air inlet ports that further improve airflow into the combustion chamber. Combined with a compression ratio of 10.9:1, the result of these enhancements is prodigious power and torque: the DBS delivers 510 bhp at 6500 rpm. The 3.71:1 final-drive ratio ensures that the additional power is usable, enhancing in-gear acceleration in particular.

Design

The DBS is manufactured using the finest materials, with a combination of hand-finishing and pioneering high-technology processes. From the exceptional quality of the design and finish to the advanced production techniques employed to save weight and create strength, the DBS is both a technological masterpiece and a powerful visual and tactile experience, inside and out.

The external detailing reflects the power and dynamic abilities of the DBS, with revised inlets and enlarged grilles that deliver more air into the engine and increase its cooling capacity. Subtle design details include a new five-bar design for the polished alloy main grille, as well as two additional vents in the enlarged power bulge on the carbon-fiber bonnet. These vents are entirely functional, improving engine performance and efficiency, yet also communicating the increased power output of the uprated V12 engine.

The DBS’s aerodynamic enhancements are shaped by Aston Martin’s racing experience. A carbon-fiber splitter and a new front bumper design help channel airflow around the car’s wider bodywork. The aerodynamics team worked hand in hand with the modeling team to ensure that the forms and surfaces of DBS were sculpted for inherent stability at high speeds.

Interior

The interior of the DBS represents the epitome of Aston Martin’s commitment to using materials honestly, without disguise or embellishment. Lightweight materials are used throughout to save weight; door pulls are made from carbon-fiber, for example, and the carpet has been woven with lighter fibers to save weight. Special semi-aniline leather is used throughout the cabin, saving weight as well as giving a soft feel and distinctive aroma.

As an option the DBS may be equipped with specially developed lightweight seats (outside North America). These feature a carbon-fiber and Kevlar composite structure and are manufactured by a supplier to the motorsport and aviation industries before being returned to Aston Martin’s Gaydon factory for hand-trimming. The structure is created by sandwiching a layer of Kevlar between two layers of carbon-fiber with the outer finish left exposed on the seat backs, lacquered to create a durable and attractive finish.

The start sequence of the DBS is augmented by an all-new centre console design with a cast metal surround, crisp typography and new graphics. The new console has a traditional dial-face clock at the centre, flanked by two rotary controls for the heating and air-conditioning system, fashioned from solid, turned aluminum.

Deliveries of the DBS are expected to commence during quarter one 2008, with prices to be confirmed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

While Bendtner was left just shaken up and with some bruises, his $270K ride was totaled; is there no god? Won’t anyone think of the poor factory artisans who assembled this marvel of modern engineering?

By: Juan G. Robbin

Miami Florida reveal of the Aston Martin DBS Volante

Aston Martin is on a roll. The current line up of exquisite bespoke high end, luxury sports cars has a dramatic new addition. The Aston Martin DBS Volante! Fresh from recently having the chance to drive the spectacular DB9 Volante, I was looking forward to seeing how one of these super-cars can be made even more capable and sportier.

Miami, chosen as one of two cities in the US for the Aston Martin DBS Volante preview, shined under the warm, moonlight night. The invitation only event, hosted by Mr. Julian Jenkins, V.P. and General Manager of Aston Martin North America, took place in the stylish Moore Building in Miami’s Design District where invited guests got a chance to see these sensational Aston Martin cars for the first time.

Upon arrival at the Moore Building, guests got their first glimpse at the fabulous Aston Martin DBS Volante and coupe in a glamorous setting. The display area was transformed into an uber-chic, lounge-like area, where the expansive, multi floor courtyard was aglow in lights, strategically reflected onto large white screens creating an aura of high tech elegance. Bars and food stations flanked the corners as well as a perfectly executed Aston Martin winged crest logo made from a huge clear block of ice. There was a large movie screen suspended above showing, of course, various action scenes from multiple James Bond movies depicting classic Aston Martins helping Agent 007 save the day.

Both the DBS Volante and Coupe commanded center stage. A treat came when I had the chance to spend some time and chat with Mr. Marek Reichman, Design Director of Aston Martin, who graciously gave me his instant reaction as to impressions of the DBS and Aston Martin’s storied heritage. His take on the DBS was simply, “The bespoke, sporty expression of the DB9.” He considers the DBS to be “A tough guy wearing a tuxedo” and regards Aston Martin to be a brand of “Restrained elegance.” Well, as it turned out, Mr. Reichman is definitely not only a world class automobile designer but also a really cool car guy to boot!

As the night progressed the crowd grew with swanky clad Miami Socialites as well as a sprinkling of celebrities and wannabes. The dazzling haute watch maker, Jaeger-LeCoultre was on hand not only showing off some of their exquisite watches, but also highlighting a joint collaboration with Aston Martin, the exclusive men’s AMVOX2 Transponder watch, which also has the unique capability of opening and closing the DBS.

Miami’s glitterati, who definitely know how to party and have a good time seeing and being seen, were smitten with the two incredible cars on display. All night long, guests posed for photos and detailed both DBS’s with tremendous enthusiasm. The DBS Coupe is currently available for sale at $269,000.00 and the DBS Volante for $282,500.00. Aston Martin is planning to sell just 100 DBS Volantes in the United States for 2009, orders are being taken with 1st deliveries in the fall. Build time for one of these sumptuous vehicles is approximately 200 man-hours (one month).

As the evening ended, I left the event and retrieved a fancy German sedan from the valet, that all of the sudden felt so pedestrian and ordinary after spending a few hours with an “objet d’art” like the Aston Martin DBS Volante.

I am a HUGE car nut. I have loved cars since I was a little kid, and have both ridden in and driven some pretty sweet rides. However, after careful consideration, I have come up with a list of 10 cars that I would DIE to drive

Bugatti Veyron 16.4

Ferrari Enzo

McLaren F1

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

Audi R8 V10

Bentley Continental GT Speed or SuperSports

Nissan GT-R

Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe

Aston Martin Vanquish or DBS

Porsche 911 Turbo w/ PDK

These cars represent the pinnacle of speed, comfort, automotive engineering, and luxury. Most of the cars on this list have top speeds in excess of 180 mph, and price tags ranging from $85,000 to $2,000,000. I hope, by the time I die, to have driven and/or owned every car on this list.

If anyone out there wants to make a dream come true, let me know!

UPDATE:

I got to ride in an Aston Martin Vanquish, which was uber cool.

The Times Online has a nice little piece on the Powell family, who for the past two generations have done stunt work for the James Bond movies.

The Powell family is among the best-kept secrets in film, having performed Bond’s stunts for more than 40 years. In 20 films, Fred “Nosher” Powell, 80, and Dennis “Dinny” Powell, 76, or Nosher’s sons Greg, 54, and Gary, 45, have helped successive Bonds from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig do the dirty business of making Bond look good.

If that sounds like fun gig, bear in mind that the elder Powells now have badly impaired hearing (after all the gun use), and a history of broken bones. Still, how many people can say, as Gary can, that they’ve personally trashed seven Aston Martin DBSs within two consecutive weeks?

The Family Who Do Stunts for James Bond is a fascinating look-behind-the-scenes story of the evolution of cinema stunt work, and another chapter in the ongoing history of the James Bond films. It’s worth your attention.

Aston Martin

This is one of many illustrated classic car guides I’ve created for the eBay community. I hope you enjoy it and if you would like to find out more about the classic Aston Martin car art featured in this guide please click here.

This guide includes several classic Aston Martin car models.

DB2/4

Introduced to the public at the London Motor Show of 1953, the DB 2/4 was a continuation of the DB2 theme. The 4 designation denoted four seats and to provide extra room the model was given an extended roofline and much larger rear windows. The longer rear fender development gave the DB2/4 a sense of bulk not found in the DB2. Originally fitted with a 2.6 litre engine, this was enlarged to 2,922cc (140bhp) in April 1954, which improved the top speed to an impressive 118mph and 0-60mph in around 10.5 seconds. Both closed and drophead versions of the car were offered from the beginning of production. Total production for the DB2/4 Mk1, DB2/4 Mk2, and DB Mk3 was 565, 199 and 551 vehicles respectively.

DB4

Aston Martin chose the London Motor Show of 1958 to launch the new DB4, although the DB2/4 Mk 3 was not discontinued at that time and production of the two models overlapped until July of 1959. The DB4 featured a new aluminium twin cam 3.7 litre engine designed by Tadek Marek and superb new body by Touring of Milan, making it a truly handsome sports car. The DB4’s stunning top speed of 140mph and 0-60 in 9 seconds was matched by precise handling and excellent four-wheel brakes. Numerous production changes in both body (such as enclosed headlights on late DB4s) and mechanical details resulted in five distinct series with production ending June of 1963 and totalling only 1,113 cars.

DB5

Compact and purposeful, the Aston Martin DB5 was produced between July 1963 and September 1965. Rounded front fenders immediately distinguish the model from the early DB4s but the car does share its design with the late Series IV and V DB4. The advantage of the DB5, which represents for many, the best of the post-war production Astons, is the extra performance provided by the powerful 3,995cc engine. In standard tune the six cylinder three SU unit produced 282BHP @ 5,500rpm (Vantage up-rated to 325bhp) and maximum speed had increased to 145mph. In addition to 886 standard Aston Martin DB5s, 123 convertibles were produced together with 12 shooting brakes by coachbuilders Harold Radford.

DB6

Announced at the 1965 London Motor Show and an obvious development of the DB5, the DB6 marked the increasing trend away from the sporting side of the early Aston Martins. Clearly bigger and different, the DB6’s roofline was some 2 inches higher and the rear window no longer faded away to a point as on the DB5. At a glance the most distinguishing feature was the upswept tail of the DB6. The basic 3,995cc dohc engine was retained but power steering was offered, along with a limited slip differential and also air conditioning. Automatic transmission was a no-extra-cost option and creature comforts were greatly improved over the DB5. A total 1,782 (including Volante) cars were built between October 1965 and November 1970.

DBS

Styled by William Towns, the DBS was introduced in September 1967 as a ‘next generation’ replacement for DB6. Despite a new body, the mechanicals were basically the same as the DB6 MkII since Tadek Marek’s new V8 engine, for which the DBS was prepared, was not ready in time. Some 200lbs heavier than a DB 6 Mk II, performance of the DBS inevitably suffered. Nevertheless the 140mph top speed and 0-60 in under 8 seconds could hardly be considered inadequate. Among the plus points for the DB S were a larger interior and a generally higher level of refinement. DBS production amounted to 790 cars built between October 1967 and May 1972 before being replaced by the DBS V8.

AM V8

The new Aston Martin was announced on April 24th 1972 with a revised front. The outline of the grill was now more in the David Brown tradition and the two headlamps also chose to pick up on the earlier styling themes. Maintaining the usual high standards that had come to be expected of the Aston Martin, it was the AM V8’s performance that was particularly impressive. Zero-to-sixty times hovered around 6 seconds with high maximum speeds now in the 150mph-160mph range. Continual refinement lead to five distinct series being produced and in 1978, the Volante convertible was added to the Aston Martin AM V8 range. The Volante, built on the AM V8 platform, was a very handsome and desirable option.

Aston Martin has revealed the new DBS Volante ahead of its world debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. The DBS Volante is Aston Martin’s 16th convertible in its 95 year record and represents the supreme combination of luxury with open air sports car performance. The motorised retractable fabric roof can be opened in just 14 seconds.

Powering by Aston Martin’s 6.0-litre V12 engine with 510bhp (380kW) and 570Nm (420 lb ft) of torque, the Volante is not just a puzzle’s car. Naught to 100km/h comes in 4.3 seconds and top end is 307km/h (191mph). It’s a right performance GT with two rear seats however Aston does concede the rear seats won’t be as drudgery as those of a typical vehicle. This is not a habitual car however, it’s a new DBS Volante.

The two existing gearbox choices are a 6-tempo manual and a routine six-velocity ‘Touchtronic’ that can be engaged via paddles. Keeping the car on the boulevard are 8.5′ x 20 Pirelli P Zero 245/35 front wheels and tyres as well as 11 x 20 Pirelli P Zero 295/30 at the rear. Stopping influence comes from carbon stoneware brakes. Engineers have utilised trial like carbon backbone front wings, gumboot lid and bonnet to moderate import. In the end it weighs 1810kg which is akin to mid-sized German luxury sedans.

Inside passengers get comfortable to skin like the Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound 13-narrator sound scheme, integrated iPod connector, a USB connector and a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) satellite navigation approach.

Bond, James Bond" width="300" height="225" />
Confort, placer.. Bond, James Bond
