Ordered my white Asus Eee PC 1000HA off of Amazon for $429.99 in early November (now $419.99, or $389.99 in black) and have been using it ever since. Netbooks specifications are nearly indistinguishable, so I spent two long months weighing the options. I chose the Asus Eee PC 1000HA because of these factors, ranked in order of importance:

1. Minumum 10″ screen. Tiny screens mean tiny keyboards. 
2. Long Battery Life. As a lower quality laptop, it might as well have one clear advantage. 6-cells were not available for 10″ netbooks, and the ones that did were priced well over $450.  The 10″ Samsung NC10 was my second choice,  since it averaged 6-7 hours in battery life tests and has Bluetooth, but it was $500 at the time. 
3. Costs under $450 with Windows XP. No other brands offered a 10″ 6-cell battery at $430. Wasn’t ready to dive into a whole new OS with Linux, which was always packaged with SSD anyway, but was alright with an upped price for Windows XP.
4. Minimum 80Gb HDD. Solid state hard drives are still pricey and I can do without. I wanted at least an extra 80Gb to cover the multimedia file overflow from my primary laptop.
5. Not ugly. Preferably white or silver. HP Minis still have the best build aesthetics, but are weak on battery life.

Pros: Extremely fast to boot up and shut down (5-10 seconds) and I get 4-5 hours on a full charge with medium brightness and Wi-Fi. Plastic casing feels surprisingly solid. Great multi-touch trackpad. Non-glossy screen. Wireless range and signal pickup are superb. Connects to my 32″ LCD HDTV with no problems. 

The buttons are underneath the trackpad and not on the sides, as you’ll find on many other netbooks. The keyboard is 92% full size, so it’s cramped but easy to adjust to. Pressing Ctrl-/+ (normally minimizes font sizes) resizes whole webpage, images and all! Four buttons above the keyboard are programmable. Brightness/volume/display controls are accessible via Fn+Function keys, just like on my PowerBook’s keyboard, as are power management and wireless connection options. The charger is white and appropriately light.

Cons: The “Pearl White” colorway means a sickening toothpaste/Barbie-doll pearly. Momentary gag reflex upon unboxing, which has passed. Pearl is nice and shiny, but matte white would have been better. Speakers are terrible, but that hardly matters with external audio. No optical drive (duh). No Bluetooth, but this was quickly remedied by purchasing a bluetooth dongle with software for ~$4 off of eBay. The capslock doesn’t have a light. Mac OSX > Windows XP (at least it’s not Vista!)

Bottom Line: A durable, decently powerful, internet friendly, and portable netbook to have on eight hour runs to campus and work. It’s very straightforward to use and only demands one recharge per day. “Easy. Excellent. Exciting.” [Read in-depth reviews @ SlashGear & NotebookReview.]

Windows XP’s interface made me feel traitorous, I mean, weird. Accessing applications via the Mac dock is much more intuitive than using the accursed Windows taskbar or desktop icons. Scrolling with two fingers on the multi-touchpad gave me the idea to Mac-ify the appearance of my netbook. To make myself a bit more comfortable on a foreign Windows OS, I:

1. Changed wallpaper to a Mac OSX Tiger Aqua.
2. Installed Mac mouse pointers.
3. Removed extraneous desktop icons. 
4. Installed Safari, iTunes, and Firefox for Windows.
5. Hid and replaced the Windows taskbar with the ObjectBar.
6. Simulated the Mac dock with RKLauncher, and customized with icons from the ObjectDock gallery. Shortcuts to Control Panel, Games, My Documents, Programs, etc. 
7. Downloaded Shock Aero 3D to mimics the task-switching effects of Exposé and Shock 4Way 3D to mimic the virtual desktops of Spaces. There’s no real clone of Mac Exposé, unfortunately – aw, I miss fn+F9/F11-ing.

Apparently Asus makes 10-cell battery for the Eee PC and am tempted to get it when this 6-cell batterydies. That’s like what, 7-9 hours of battery life on a single charge? I could deal with it looking like a hammerhead netbook. Sharks are cool.

เพราะทั้งนี้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับความชอบของแต่ละคน ว่าจะเลือกสีอะไร และชอบเครื่องของแบรนด์ไหน มากกว่ากัน

Orange has had a lot of success with its “connected laptop” range since it launched in August and this Asus  Eee PC 901 laptop is expected to do very well in the run up to Christmas. The laptop weighs only 1.1kg, making it truly portable for those who want mobile broadband 3G connectivity on the move.

요즘 유행(?)한다는 넷북을 하나 장만했다. 사실 dell에서 최근에 나온 것을 주문했었는데, 여러가지 이유로 해서 결국엔 주문을 취소하게 되었고, 그 이후로 잠시 잊고 지내다가 결국엔 Asus에서 나온 놈으로 장만했다. 가장 큰 핑계이유라면, 지금 쓰고 있는 dell 랩탑이 지나치게 열을 많이 받는다는 것. 물론 이 놈도 넷북 축에 끼일 정도로 작은 놈이긴 하지만, 외장 팬을 가지고 다니자면 너무 불편하다능…

좀 리서치를 해보니 Asus도 나름 괜찮은 선택인 것 같다. 무엇보다 가격 면에서 나한테는 좋은 선택이었다. 아래는 상자에서 막 꺼내서 늘어놓은 것. AC 어댑터와 배터리, 본체, 아래는 파우치. 만년필은 크기 대조를 위해서 놓아둔 것이고, 고 옆에는 껍데기 닦으라고 들어있는 헝겊쪼가리.

워낙에 작다보니까 cd/dvd 드라이브는 당연히 없고, 따라서 필요없는 소프트웨어를 지우고 내가 필요한 놈으로 다시 까는데 조금 불편함이 있긴 하다. 지금은 필수 소프트웨어들을 인스톨하는 중.

가만보니, 딱 yellowpad 크기다. 자판은 솔직히 말해서 좀 작은 편이긴하나 어차피 책상에서 쓸 때는 외장키보드를 쓸 수 있고, 모니터도 오래 쓸 경우에는 외장 모니터를 연결해서 쓸 수 있으니까 사용에는 커다란 문제는 없을 듯 싶다.

기존의 HDD가 아닌 SSD라는 형태의 디스크인 까닭에 약간, 아니 상당히 하드디스크의 용량이 작기는 하지만, 어차피 서브노트북으로 쓰는 것인지라 무리는 없을 것 같다. 게다가 지금 깔리는 것으로 보면, 내가 쓰는 필수 프로그램들 정도는 무난하게 설치해서 쓸 수 있을 듯. SSD인 경우에는 충격으로 인한 파손의 위험도 HDD보다 월등히 적고, 열이 발생하는 일도 적은 ATOM CPU를 사용하고 있어서 나로서는 가장 최적의 선택이 된 것 같다. 물론 소음도 거의 없다. 거참 신기하게 느껴진다. 랩탑에 손 올려놓고 있으면 뜨뜨~~읏하고, 맨날 왜~~~앵 거리는 소리에 익숙해있었는데 말이지…

세상 참 좋다.

나중에 쓰다가 2mb(응?)로 메모리를 올릴 수도 있을 것 같긴 한데… default인 1mb로도 충분할 듯 싶다.

업데이트:

필요한 소프트웨어를 죄다 깔고도 하드가 조금 남는다. 어차피 사진관련 소프트웨어는 설치할 생각도 없었으니 괜찮고, 최소설치를 했던 다른 소프트웨어들도 충분히 여유있게 다시 설치해도 될 듯. 어차피 sub로 쓸 생각으로 장만한 것이니까, 여기에 자료들을 담아둘 일도 없고… 디카에서 쓰던 SD메모리 카드도 있고, thumb drive도 있고하니 자료들 이리저리 옮기는 것에는 문제가 없다. 역시 자판이 조금 좁기는 하다. 내가 원래 ‘한 타자’하는 편이라고 생각했는데, 이 좁은 자판에 익숙해지려면 약간 시간이 걸릴 듯도 하다. 그러나 아주 불편할 정도는 아닌 듯.

무엇보다도, 내일부터는 [랩탑 자체는 사실 문제가 없다] 팬이 달린 패드와 불편한 AC 어댑터를 들고다니지 않아도 된다는 것이 좋다.

I somras köpte jag en Asus Eee PC 701 som jag blev blixtförälskad i. Datorn var liten, välbyggd och packad med smarta funktioner till ett mycket bra pris.

Efter sommaren sålde jag datorn och fick tillbaka mina pengar, i väntan på Asus Eee PC 901, som bl.a. har större skärm och en snabbare processor.

Nu när 901:an väl är ute i handeln… eller i nätbutikerna i alla fall, så känner jag mig rätt besviken. Framförallt på prissättningen. 901:an kostar nästan det dubbla i jämförelse med 701:an. Vad är det egentligen man får för sina pengar?

Nedanför går jag igenom de för och nackdelar som skiljer Asus 3 populäraste modeller åt.

+ Kraftfull nog för surfning, filmvisning och kontorssysslor

+ Större skärm (8.9″ istället för 7″)
+ Högre upplösning (1024×600)
+ 16gb SSD hårddisk (istället för 8gb, med Linux versionen)

+ Något större tangentbord
+ Fortfarande bra pris (ca 2400:-)
+ Dubbelt minne (1gb istället för 512mb)
- Något tyngre (990g istället för 922g)
- Några milimeter större här och var

Asus Eee PC 901 (i jämförelse med 701 & 900)
901 har alla fördelar som 900 har, och dessutom:
+ Snabbare processor (1,6MHz istället för 900MHz)
+ Längre batteritid (4-7 timmar istället för 3-4)
+ Bluetoothstöd
- Nästan dubbla priset i jämförelse med 701:an (ca 3800:-)
- Du får en normalstor, kraftfullare, laptop för samma pris
- Något tyngre (1140g)
- Några milimeter större här och var

Användningsområden
Själv använde jag 701:an till att surfa med, skapa dokument, bildredigering, filmvisning (klarade till och med 720p video!), videosamtal med Skype, enklare spel m.m. Det vill säga allt som dessa subnotebooks / netbooks / mini laptops är gjorda för.
I alla dessa syften så räckte 701:ans kraft till alldeles utmärkt. Det som gjorde att jag ville gå vidare med en annan mini laptop var framförallt att jag upplevde upplösningen på 800 i bredd som för litet. Jag fick klaustrofobiska känslor när jag surfade runt på sidor som var anpassade för 1024-upplösning (vilket många är idag).

Jag började snegla på Asus Eee PC 901, Acer Aspire One och MSI Wind u100 istället. Alla har större skärm, högre upplösning och Atom processor - som ger längre batteritid.

Nu har jag bestämt mig. Det blir ingen av dessa.

901:an är för dyr. Acer Aspire One är ett väldigt trevligt alternativ men tangentbordet kändes sladdrigt i jämförelse med Asus. MSI Wind har jag hört mycket positivt om, men har aldrig kunnat testa i verkligheten eftersom den har dåligt med återförsäljare i Sverige.

Därför väljer jag Asus Eee PC 900 istället. Den har alla de fördelar jag verkligen behöver (större skärm, högre upplösning och mer minne) till ett mycket bra pris. Det blir mycket dator för pengarna och 901:ans fördelar  kan jag leva utan.

Ja, jag vet att det finns femtielva andra netbooks också. De här är de modeller som skapar mest buzz i den svenska handeln just nu. Acern är redan ute i butikerna, och vilken dag som helst så kan nätbutiker och affärer börja leverera Asus Eee PC 901 och MSI Wind.

Själv kommer jag invänta netbookarnas ankomst i affären så att jag kan klämma och känna på dem på riktigt. För min del står valet mellan Asus eller MSI. Asus vet jag redan är bra. Om MSIn har ett så trevligt tangentbord som folk säger, så kan den vinna striden. (Även om det känns surt att behöva betala för ett Windows system när Asus egna Linux-variant funkar så bra.)

Ultra Mobile Laptop from Fujitsu

Fujitsu announced a UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) called the Lifebook U2010. It runs on an Intel Atom Z530 (1.6 GHz) processor, has a 5.6 inch 1024 x 768 screen, and claims an 8 hour battery life. It comes in many colors and includes a built-in webcam. The reported price of $1300 is quite a bit more expensive than the comparable $500 Asus Eee PC 901.

Two Cool New Nikons

The Nikon Coolpix S560 is expected to go on sale at the end of August and will sell for around $250. It’s a 10 MP compact camera with 5X optical zoom, ISO up to 3200, advanced face detection features and optical image stabilization. It will record 640 x 480 video at 30 fps.

The Nikon Coolpix P6000 is even cooler than the S560 (and twice as expensive at $500). It’s a 13.5 MP compact camera with 4X optical zoom and optical image stabilization. One feature you’re paying extra for is a built-in GPS that “geo-tags” your pictures. This camera could be the closest thing to an SLR that fits in your pocket.

Another Game for NVIDIA’s PhysX Engine

NVIDIA announced that CAPCOM’s upcoming Bionic Commando video game will use GPU-accelerated NVIDIA PhysX technology to enhance the game’s debris, smoke, dust, and weapon effects. Bionic Commando, which will be released by GRIN in early 2009 should offer super realistic images generated by the CUDA general-purpose parallel computing processor.

Batman Game Coming in 2009

A new videogame from Eidos Interactive called Batman: Arkham Asylum will be made available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Games for Windows in 2009. The game is being developed by Rocksteady Studios and puts players in the role of Batman as he delivers the Joker to Arkham Asylum.

New Thinkpad for Digital Artists

The Lenovo ThinkPad W700 has a big bright 17-inch screen but only weighs just 8.4 pounds. The Quad-core Extreme chip should provide lots of horsepower. The W700 is the first laptop with an integrated color-calibration system using a set of built-in color sensors along with an onboard Wacom graphics tablet. This laptop won’t be cheap, costing $3,000 before adding the extras and may go for as much as $7500 fully loaded. It’s due to go on sale in September.

News on the Much Anticipated Laser RPTV

The hype is for a projection TV with an extensive range of colors and the best depth of field of any display technology. Add to that a claimed 75% reduction in power over an LCD TV along with a 50,000-hour life span. Sound impressive? A handful of reporters were given a sneak peak at this TV at the 2008 CES and they were impressed by what they saw. Mitsubishi says they will offer a 65” Laser DLP set called LaserVue in September. The price could be less than $2,000.

Gambar atas adalah Asus eee PC 900 yang mengusung layar lebih besar dengan ukuran diagonal 8.9 inci, dibandingkan dengan pendahulunya (seperti Asus eee 2G, 4G dan 8G dengan lary 7″-nya). Layar yang terlihat mengisi seluruh area LCD, meminimalkan ketebalan bingkai di sekelilingnya. Di model ini juga Asus memperkenalkan untuk pertama kalinya touch pad yang bisa dioperasikan dengan 2 atau 3 jari.
