Ach  ja, unsere asiatische Gerüchteküche! Nun will man in Fernost erfahren haben wollen, dass Asustek sein Ziel, bis 2011 in das Spitzentrio der Notebook-Anbieter vorzustoßen, durch Übernahmen erzielen will.

Ganz oben auf der Wunschliste soll die entsprechende Abteilung von Toshiba stehen.

Insgesamt wäre das eine plausible Entwicklung: Im Gegensatz zur Desktop-Rechnern gibt’s bei Mobilrechnern noch Wachstumspotenzial, was wiederum aber alle Hersteller auch wissen und sich daher heftig um diesen Markt balgen, was wiederum zur Folge hat, dass die Margen sinken.

Dass Asustek in diesem Spiel gute Karten hat, liegt auf der Hand: Mit dem starken Standbein im Netbook-Segment kann man bestens darauf reagieren, dass der Übergang zwischen Net- und Notebook fließend wird, und wenn man Toshiba die Notebook-Abteilung abschwatzen kann, ist man bestens für den Trend gerüstet, Netbooks doch noch ein bisschen leistungsfähiger zu machen … [dieter]

So mancher Käufer der kleinen Minimobilen durfte im Rechneralltag feststellen, dass die Performance doch ein wenig mager ausfällt. Da lässt sich ein wenig nachhelfen.

Der erste große Netbook-Wurf war der Eee PC. Weil der in zweistelliger Millionenauflage gekauft wurde, wendet sich die Nachrüstplatine “Active SaberTooth S4 SATA Mini PCIe SSD” in erster Linie an die Eee-Modelle 900, 900A, 901 und 1000.
Dank sequentieller Lese-Algorithmen komme das Flashlaufwerk auf interne Datenübertragungsraten von bis zu 130 MB/s. Das sollte im täglichen Netbook-Betrieb durchaus für spürbaren Tempozuwachs reichen.
Das Nachrüstlaufwerk mit dem ach so griffigen Namen gibt es wahlweise in den Kapazitäten 16, 32 sowie 64 GByte und kostet dabei von knapp 50 bis rund 140 Dollar. Eine durchaus erschwingliche Tuningmaßnahme. [Ralf]

Während Intel sich noch zurückhält, prescht Asustek mutig vor und wirft die erste Hauptplatine mit USB 3.0-Ports auf den Markt.

Das Board namens “Asus Xtreme Design P7P55D-E” scheint weit und breit das allererste seiner Art zu sein. Es basiert auf dem Intel P55-Chipsatz, benutzt einen fremden USB 3.0-Controller (von NEC?) und verfügt zunächst nur über zwei 3.0-Ports. Zusätzlich gibt es noch 10 alte USB-2.0-Ports, sicher ist sicher.
Asustek verspricht CrossFire- und SLI-Support, verbaut zwei PCIe x16-Slots, ein paar Gigabit Ethernet-Ports sowie eSATA. Leider gibt es noch keine Preisangaben aus Taiwan. [Ralf]

Der passt unter jeden Tisch: Der ESC 1000 ist der allererste Superrechner, den Hersteller Asustek je gebaut hat. Vier verschiedene Prozessortypen bringen gemeinsam 1,1 Teraflops Rechenleistung.

Eine Billion Floatingpoint-Berechnungen pro Sekunde sind eine beachtliche Rechenleistung. Die kriegt der ESC durch die Kombination aus Intel Xeon W3580 (3,33 GHz, LGA1366), Quadro FX5800 und dreier Tesla c1060, die auf 960 nVidia-GPU-Cores zugreifen, hin.
Die Power eigne sich für wissenschaftliche Berechnungen, Raytracing, Konstruktionsberechnungen oder medizinische Kalkulationen.
Der ESC 1000 ist für ein 64-Bit-OS gedacht, enthält 24 GByte DDR3-RAM der neuesten Generation  (1333 MHz) sowie in der Grundausstattung 500 GByte SATA II-HD und ein 1.100 Watt Netzteil. Die Gerüchte, das System koste inklusive Software und Service etwa 14.500 Dollar, wurden von Asustek dementiert. Der Stückpreis werde erst genannt, wenn es zur globalen Markteinführung komme. Sieht ganz so aus, als könne der eBook-Reader das werden, was zuletzt das Netbook war: Erst allgemeines Gegrummel, was man mit so einem Ding denn machen solle, dann Überraschungserfolg eines einzelnen Herstellers, und schließlich will jeder sowas im Sortiment haben.

Mit der Ankündigung von MSI jedenfalls, im der ersten Jahreshälfte 2010 auch einen Reader vorstellen zu wollen, ist das Feld der Konkurrenz noch ein wenig größer geworden.

Das Gerät von MSI scheint jedoch seine Tücken zu haben: Dass man einen Nvidia Tegra-Chipset verwenden will, scheint zu technischen Problemen zu führen, die Zeit zur Lösung benötigen, weshalb MSI auch erst nächstes Jahr mit technischen Details rausrücken will

Скоро след това се очаква Micro-Star International (MSI) и Acer също да обявят своите нови ултра-тънки модели, твърдят източници.

The PC industry is highly competitive where companies are required to sell in large volumes to generate an incremental profit. The traditional PC business model (e.g. Dell, HP, Apple) for introducing innovation to their product line (and thereby attempting to differentiate) by adding the latest hardware features (CPU, memory, hard drive, motherboards) and sell it much higher because the cost of the components tended to be higher or introduce a new design. Over a period of time, by reaching certain volume, the cost of the machine tends to decrease because the cost of components decrease as well as manufacturing costs are cheaper. e.g. Dell could sell a company at $3500 in year 1 but the same company in year 2 would be $2000, etc..

The Netbook has changed the PC’s way of innovating by introducing low-cost ultra-portable machines with small amount of CPU, hard drive, and memory. Asustek “borrowed” the concept from Negroponte’s OLPC initiative with Quanta. Quanta and Asustek are the largest Taiwan computer manufacturing firms — Asustek discovered this early and decided to re-define the industry. Rather than simply be the outsourcing partner for the majority of PC firms, they decided to develop these machines with their own brand (eeePC) leveraging their existing resources to develop the machines. The major PC manufacturers were slow to market because they felt their products were superior and that customers would not the “Netbook” experience — suprisingly — it became a success and all PC manufacturers had to adapt and develop their own version of the Netbook. The Asustek “eeePC” has become the most common netbook brand. The challenge with these Netbooks is that it eats into their higher margin PCs — as Asustek continues to innovate and introduce better Netbooks, they would be closing the gap compared to laptops and indirectly reducing their competitors profit margins.

Zwar gehen viele  Hersteller davon aus, dass ihre Kunden nicht bereit sind, einen Windows 7-Aufschlag zu zahlen; mittelfristig allerdings, so glaubt man, führt wohl kein Weg an dem neuen Microsoft-OS vorbei, weeshalb jetzt schon mal die Bestände reduziert werden. Den Käufer soll’s freuen.

Offenbar soll die Strategie eingeschlagen werden, Rechner mit Intel Atom N70 und N280 weiterhin mit Windows XP anzubieten, Netbooks mit Atom N450-Prozessor sollen dagegen mit Windows 7 ausgerüstet werden. Derzeit kostet eine OEM-Version von XP zwischen 25 und 30 Dollar, Windows 7 dagegen soll zwischen 45 und 55 Dollar liegen.

Bereits begonnen mit dem Netbook-Abverkauf hat Asustek: Hier sind die 7- und 8,9-Zoll-Modelle dran, die auf dem asiatischen Markt inzwischen zu Preisen von 153 bis 219 Dollar verscherbelt werden.

Ende Juli soll der Verkaufsstart des “Disney Netpal” in Kanada und den USA bei Toys R Us stattfinden. 2004 hatte der Konzern es schon mal mit einem 1.000-Dollar-Desktop versucht, mit mäßigem Erfolg. Nun versucht man die große Fanbasis, die jüngst vor allem durch Piraten der Karibik und High School Musical gewonnen werden konnte, zu aktivieren. Daher gebe es auch passendes Zubehör wie DVD-Player, Lautsprecher, Alarmwecker und Gettoblaster in den entsprechenden Designs.

Langsam, aber sicher scheint der Markt für Android-Handys in Schwung zu kommen: Pünktlich zum Auftakt der IT-Messe Computex kündigt nun auch Acer an, der Open Handset Alliance (OHA) beizutreten, die sich der Produktion von Telefonen mit dem neuen OS verschrieben hat.

Zusammen mit HTC und Asustek ist damit ein dritter taiwanesischer Großhersteller an Bord, was bedeutet, dass uns noch im Laufe des Jahres eine Flut (na, sagen wir mal besser: Welle) von Smartphones mit dem Google-OS erreichen wird.

Real True Internet News was not able to get in touch with a representative from ASUS (which is perhaps most well known for introducing the EEE PC netbook computer) but we were surprised to see Jesus show up for an interview as a disembodied voice.
