of death, dying and the evil of all hallow’s eve… that probably just about says it all for you… The mix starts out innocuous enough and dissipates into some brutal listens that should really shake your spine and leave you quaking in your boots. Sadly, some band’s could be a complete catalog without much effort, making cutting it down to a track an artist interesting. Primer trabajo mencionado en el blog de la banda, nos encontramos ante los pioneros del denominado Melodic Death Metal y ante, en mi opinión, su trabajo más representativo. Una obra que, aún sin estar entre mis favoritas, es muy grata para mi. Combinan de forma soberbia una sección de guitarras un tanto pesada, con unos ritmos de bateria tremendamente rápidos. Las voces son de lo mejorcito que se ha visto dentro del género junto con las de Anders Fridén de In Flames.

En este trabajo nos encontramos con Anders Björler (The Haunted, Terror, Infestation, Liers in Wait) y Martin Lardsson (House of Usher) en la guitarra; Jonas Björler (The Haunted, Terror, Infestation, Demolition) en el bajo; Adrian Erlandsson (Cradle of Filth, The Haunted, Tenet, Brujeria, Decameron, Code, Terror, H.E.A.L., Needleye, Samsas Traum, 12 Ton Method, Paradise Lost, Netherbird) a la batería; Tomas Lindberg (Grotesque, Infestation, Liers in Wait, Lock Up, Nightrage, The Crown, Ben-Hur, Conquest, Disfear, Hide, Skitsystem, The Great Deceiver, World Without End) en el apartado vocal; y, como artista invitado, Andy LaRocque (King Diamond, Illwill, X-World/5, E.F. Band, Gutrix) tocando el solo de guitarra en la canción Cold.

Cabe destacar que las canciones Into The Dead Sky y The Flames Of The End son meramente instrumentales, y que el trabajo fue reeditado dos veces; una en 2002 con las siguientes canciones:

Lo dicho, epic band, epic piece of work. Sin decir que claramente que tanto At the Gates como Slaughter of the Soul en particular han sido una influencia clave para la mayoría de grupos de melodic death metal posteriores, de entre los cuales podríamos resaltar a sus grandes sucesores In Flames. Put simply, this is a collection of lesser known songs by famous bands or cool songs by bands that don’t get much mainstream attention. Check them out.

Opeth – Coil: The acoustic opener to the Watershed album. Just beautiful.

Martyr AD – Broken Mouth: Metalcore before it became big. Sadly, this band split up but not before making two albums, On Earth As It Is In Hell, and the debut The Human Condition In Twelve Fractions, from which this song is taken.

A Life Once Lost – Detest: To be honest, I’m not a big fan of this band, but this song has a groove you can’t help love. There’s not much to this song, and it basically boils down to the first riff repeating over and over. But I keep coming back to it.

Judas Priest – One on One: The first of two Ripper era Priest songs. The two albums Ripper did get a lot of flak from fans, and while they weren’t brilliant they did have their moments. This was one such song. Listen to it in its own right, without the burden of Priest’s discography weighing it down.

Judas Priest – Burn In Hell: The other Ripper era song. Pay attention to how they build up the layers at the start. One by one, sounds are added until the riff kicks in. And what a riff too.

Judas Priest – A Touch Of Evil: This was originally featured on my favourite Priest album Painkiller, but I’ve gone for the live version here. This song has always fascinated me because of it’s obviously dark and menacing tone. Study the lyrics, keeping in mind that Rob Halford hadn’t come out as gay when this song was released. You’ll see the song in a whole new light suddenly.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Evening/Morning: Up-and-coming indie rockers from London. I’d seen their debut album I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose flagged up repeatedly on Spotify and thought I’d check it out. This was the first song I heard, and 2 days later I was buying the album at HMV.

Anthrax – King Size: Another song from an album that gets a lot of shit from fans, but actually sounds quite good if you hear it in isolation, rather than in the context of the bands’ past efforts. Stomp 442 had a lot of groovy stuff, like this song, Fueled and Grunt & Click

Vader – Xeper: Vader have a ton of hits, but this one gets very few outings these days. One of the coolest riffs these guys have written, Xeper is a song that rocks because of its simplicity. And this coming from a band renowned for its technicality. Whiplash guaranteed.

Megadeth – Five Magics: Ok, so every track on Rust In Peace is legendary. But this one gets mentioned a whole lot less than Hangar 18, Holy Wars or Tornado Of Souls. A slow starter, it picks up the pace along the way and once the ridiculous guitar part kicks in at 4:46, you’ll be convinced. Awesome.

Megadeth – Psychotron: Lyrically, it’s not the cleverest thing Mustaine has ever written. But with a catchy riff like that, who cares?

Chimaira – Six: A true hidden gem. This 9 minute epic incorporates everything from jackhammer double-bass to eastern influences, in a song about surviving adversity to come out stronger. Inspirational and grandiose in equal measure.

Black Label Society – Bridge To Cross: For a bunch of guys known for their rambunctious brand of metal, this makes for a stark departure. Acoustic, moody and as close to a musical equivalent of melancholy as you’re likely to get.

Youngblood Brass Band – Elegy: I love this song. This is the live version, and the instruments sound so much more vibrant here. Look up the lyrics, the subject matter may be your average heartbreak, but DH Skogen is a clever lyricist.

Rage Against The Machine – Snakecharmer: Buried deep in the Evil Empire album, this song has one of the coolest grooves Tom Morello ever came up with, if you ask me.

Rage Against The Machine – Fistful Of Steel: Track 8 from the self-titled debut. Zack is outraged in most of his songs, but you’ll feel it a lot more on this one.

Tool – The Pot: Simple, yet so effective. The riff is probably the simplest one Tool has ever written. But how can you not scream along with Maynard every time he says, “You must’ve been HIGH!” With great bass lines to boot.

Tool – Swamp Song: I can’t believe this wasn’t released as a single from the Undertow album. Tool at their lyrical, belligerent best.

Slayer – Threshold: Taken from the God Hates Us All album. Pure aggro; I dare you not to scream along with Araya at the end when he’s shouting “I CAN’T STOP THE RAGE, I CAN’T STOP THE HATE YEAH!” Violent music at its punchiest.

Slayer – Catatonic: One of ‘those’ Slayer songs, where they don’t play at 2 billion BPM for a change. And that just makes the riff and the vocals that much more menacing and intense.

Metallica – Carpe Diem Baby: Buried very deep on the much-maligned Reload album, this one is actually a very good mid-tempo rocker. No, it isn’t thrash metal, but it’s still a cool song that is moody, dark and heartfelt.

Metallica – Ronnie: The most un-Metallica song ever written, this song from Load has more in common with blues than metal. Again, just forget for a second that you’re listening to a band that is famous for thrash metal, and you’ll see how this a brilliant song.

Apocalyptica – Farewell: I love songs that have an emotion to them. And if you don’t know what I mean, listen to this song and you’ll understand. It’s as if someone wrote the soundtrack to sorrow.

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun: I chanced upon this song because it was featured on the movie Collateral. Again, a great example of a moving song that has an emotional side to it. Chris Cornell has a great voice, and he puts it to good use, especially on the last verse.

At The Gates – World Of Lies: Taken from the genre-defining Slaughter Of The Soul album, I’m baffled why this song doesn’t get lauded more. Pure genius.

Florence + The Machine – Between Two Lungs: Everyone’s going gaga over Dog Days Are Over, but for me this song is the highlight of the album. Lyrically, it’s by far the cleverest song on the album – love is the thing between two lungs, and the song is about how the emotion is passed from one person to the other. Musically, the song is typical Florence – a slow start and gradual build-up right till the climax when it explodes into harmony. And the song is as every bit as sexual as that sounds.

The Crown – Death Is The Hunter: With a name like that you know it’s not going to be a love ballad. The Crown is one of the most underrated heavy bands in recent times. They’ve broken up sadly, but not before leaving us with a solid 6 album catalogue.

Dimmu Borgir – Eradication Instincts Defined: I always thought Dimmu’s orchestral arrangements hit a new high on this album, Death Cult Armageddon. No song symbolises that more than this one; it gives epic a whole new meaning.

Dimmu Borgir – Burn In Hell: A cover of the Twisted Sister song, and it’s one of those rare ones that manages to sound better than the original.

Pantera – It Makes Them Disappear: A slow, moody and brooding song, but in the Pantera style so there’s lots of distortion and squealing guitars. The lyrics are some of the darkest Pantera ever wrote, made all the more eerie by the calm riffing.

Pantera – Electric Funeral: An amazing cover of the Sabbath classic.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – War: 8 brothers come together and play instrumental music in this brass band. The songs are good, but the live performance is absolutely electric. I was lucky enough to see them live twice, and if you ever get the chance to do the same, you should definitely go. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Disturbed – Droppin’ Plates: Delve deep into the debut album The Sickness, and you get this gem. There’s angry songs, and then there’s angry songs that scare you because the tone is so calm it’s absolutely psychotic. Nice.

Your Demise – Black Veins: The next big thing in hardcore, from St. Albans in the UK. Just hear the song, it speaks for itself.

Mudvayne – Prod: I think Mudvayne were brilliant on their debut album L.D. 50, because songs like this took them out of nu-metal and put them closer to progressive territory. An eerie heavy song if there ever was one, punctuated by Ryan Martinie’s brilliant bass playing.

Trivium – The Crusade: I absolutely detest this album, but this 8 minute instrumental almost redeems all the garbage that precedes it. It’s not that the fretwork is brilliant – I hate artists who spend their time showing off their skill and forget to write a song – it’s the melodies and the hooks that make this song so catchy and memorable. That it is a technically difficult song is the icing on the cake.

Korn – Justin: As kooky and bizarre as anything else that had made Korn a big hit at the time. Freak On A Leash may have won the grammy, but the whole Follow The Leader album had nu-metal gems like this one.

Cancer Bats – Smiling Politely: Are they a punk band? Are they a metal band? I don’t think the Cancer Bats know themselves. This song certainly has a metal feel to it, and it’s got Billy Talent’s Ben Kowalewicz guesting on vocals. Gotta love that riff.

Captain Beefheart – Abba Zaba (Live): I couldn’t find the full song anywhere online, so check out the preview that Amazon lets you hear. Beefheart was an absolute genius, and as is normally the case with geniuses, absolutely insane. This song always captured that fine line between genius and insanity that was Beefheart. Look up his bio on wikipedia, you won’t be disappointed.

Euphoria – Maeri: These guys were one of the first ‘bands’ in India to find some mainstream success. I’m not a big fan of their pop-rock style, but kudos to them for taking a band (in the western sense) and making it mainstream in India. In particular, this is a tune I keep coming back to. 3 notes open the song, and vocalist Palash sings about a love lost. Probably the most bitter-sweet song I’ve ever heard. Even if you don’t understand Hindi, you’ll get the drift if you watch the video.

Lamb Of God – Condemn The Hive: This one is a Japan-only bonus track and I don’t see why, because it’s as good as anything on the Wrath album. Just enjoy.

Machine Head – Negative Creep: A metalised version of the Nirvana song. Grunge fans will hate it, which is why I love it.

The Doors – The End (Live): This song isn’t really a hidden gem, but the live version isn’t worshipped as much as it should be. Live at the Hollywood Bowl in ‘68, you get Jim Morrison at his best, joking with the crowd and singing alternate lyrics. It was a beautiful song to begin with, but this version take it a notch higher.

Well, here it is. I’ve been meaning to put this up somewhere for a year now. The decaying masters of disgusting rotten death/gore/grind, Repulsion! If you see their name on a concert bill you’ll probably be in shock, as I was. They have been around since the early 80’s but have broken up a few times, and only released one full length album, Horrified. Which is in fact a compilation of demo material, but treated like a full length. Anyways, read their wikipedia entry for a more detailed history.

At this show they opened for At The Gates on the “Suicidal Final Tour”.

En la banda está el señor Thomas Lindberg, más conocido por ser el vocales de At The Gates o de Skitsystem. Precisamente, los últimos irían más en la línea de Disfear. Crust/DBeat. Vamos. Jag vet att jag har varit världskass på att uppdatera. Men jag tänkte att de skulle vara bra att uppdatera nu, eller ja, iaf på tiden är de i vilket fall. Så vad har jag pysslat med då som har tagit min tid? Framförallt har jag varit sjuk, så jag har inte kunnat göra så mycket, varit hemma och strosat omkring och läst böcker, lyssnat på musik, och sedan åkte jag, pappa och brorsan till Sthlm, då pappa är där ifrån. Jag och pappa tog med min ena faster och så åkte vi till Åland, de var väldigt mysigt. Ålandsbåten var väldigt speciellt dock. Va som en mini Stena Line, fast mer folk *skratt* tror att alla ville till Åland i sommar. När jag satt där på båten så satt jag och funderade på i vilka länder jag har varit i. Dock har jag sådan där halvkoll på hur många gånger jag varit på de olika ställena. Men vi tar lite gissning… Sverige (såklart), Norge (x1), Danmark(x15 – räknar inte genomresor), Tyskland(x6 – räknar inte genomresor), Polen(x2), Estland(x1), Frankrike(x6), Spanien(x1),Ungern(x1), Malawi(x1) och Finland (x1 – Åland) sedan har jag varit i Nederländerna och Sydafrika med om vi räknar länder där jag mellanlandat ^^.

Sedan kvar i år har jag; Danmark, Ungern och eventuellt England kvar att åka till. Så de blir lite blandat. Vilket betyder – ja, jag borde skaffa mig ett jobb. Men jag är optimistisk och jobb kommer nog så småningom. Förhoppningsvis innan skatteåterbäringen är slut! =)

I helgen som kommer så är de Metaltown, jag var där förra året och de var grymt mycket folk som var ute och rörde sig på gator och torg, men framförallt på bananpiren (frihamnspiren) de som kommer spela är;

• Slipknot (US) - Är inte mitt favoritband, men ser dom gärna för att ha sett dom.
• Marilyn Manson (US) – Samma här, ser gärna för att ha sett, men skulle nog aldrig betala för att gå på en konsert annars.
• Disturbed (US) – Dessa ser jag fram emot att se =)
• Volbeat (DK) – Har jag sett en massa gånger, men tycker riktigt mycket om deras musik. Så de ser jag verkligen fram emot
• DIR EN GREY (JAP) – Lite blandade känslor har jag om dessa dock
• Children of Bodom (FIN) – Haha, de ska bli intressant, har inte lyssnat på dem sedan jag var tillsammans med Per och de var 4år sedan!
• Opeth (S) - Jag kan ju gissa att Kim kommer att stå allra längst fram, dock kommer jag stå i mitten, hoppa med, utan att riskera klämskador!
• My Dying Bride (UK)  - Har inte hört så mycket av dem vad jag kan minnas
• The Haunted (S) – De var ett antal år sedan som jag lyssnade på dessa, de måste varit under gymnasietiden =) Underbara tid!

Då var den äntligen här! DARK TRANQUILLITYs Punish My Heaven, uppföljaren till AT THE GATES Blinded By Fear i bluegrass tappning. Det är en djävligt schysst version och man förstår att Punish My Heaven var mycket svårare än Blinded By Fear att transponera.

NP: Rosetta – Départe (Galilean Satellites, 2005)

Det är egentligen en dålig idé från början. Mitt nya projekt. Projekt: Nostalgi! Skivspelaren på bilden är av samma modell som jag runt 1983-84 spelade MÖTLEY CRÜEs Too Fast For Love och Shout At The Devil på. En gammal hederlig Luxor 4221:a från mitten av 70-talet, det här var en av Luxor Radios budgetmodeller och kostade i runda slängar 3000kr (enligt en källa på nätet). En 2:a i mina gamla kvarter i Alinge kostade strax under 2000kr 1975 och idag kostar en Rega P1 runt 2500. Ni förstår ju vilken nivå vi ligger på här.

Dock ifrågasätter jag min egen pris spekulation, känns lite orimligt att min farsa ger mig en skivspelare som 7 år tidigare var dyrare en månadshyra för vår 3:a. Efter en mer noggrann efterforskning uppges efterföljande modell, Luxor 9381, ha kostat 700kr. Enligt HiFi-handboken låg priset för en Luxor 9381 på runt tusenlappen. Det låter ju också som en mer rimlig prisklass för farsan som då var en riktig metallarbetare!

Bara de grejorna går på från 600 kr upp till 1500 beroende på vilken pickup jag väljer. En billig gul som kommer vara direkt oestetiskt eller en, som om renoveringen inte blir bra funkar lika bra på någon annan spelare, lite dyrare Shure eller Nagaoka..? Vi får se, beställning kommer ske när skatteåterbäringen har kommit så fortsättning följer…

Två dumma misstag

Hur mycket har jag betalat då? 50 spänn, så det kvittar mig om jag får ordning på det eller ej. I alla fall i dagsläget när jag inte har slängt ut dryga tusenlappen på reservdelar. Dessutom har jag hittat en auktion på Tradera där samma modell gick för 245kr, tillsynes välvårdad och i bra skick, dessutom fanns den här i Stenungsund. Synd!
För att spä på hur synd det är om mig ytterligare, och blottlägga min dumhet, så måste jag berätta om en Sansui 350A stärkare som jag hittade på Returvaruhuset i onsdags. Visste inte vad det var för stärkare och märke, men jag viste att man (jag) skulle kunna göra ett fynd! Istället för att paxa skiten och hämta min flickvän plockar jag ut stärkaren ur hyllan, det är att riktigt kabeltrassel och jag misstänker att ingen hade tittat på den efter den ställdes dit, jag tittar länge på den och antecknar namn och modell. Sedan skyndar jag i väg för att plocka upp AntiCristel. Efter en befogad utskällning, en sökning på nätet och ett skamset telefonsamtal fick jag ur mig vad det var som hade förhalat mig. (Nä, det var absolut inte mitt eget fel.) Efter en snabb överläggning beslutades det att jag kunde lägga 200kr på stärkaren. Till min STORA besvikelse är dock stärkan redan såld och jag grämer mig nått enorm över mitt misstag. Dessutom sabbade jag min flickväns dag också.

Trösten

Så Luxor spelaren får ses som lite tröst, det räckte dock inte utan jag var tvungen att bre på med en platta också. Det är den ni ser på bilden. Senaste CANDLEMASS mackan Death Magic Doom slank ner i en skivkasse från Bengans.
Såg förresten Jesper Strömblad sittandes i en soffa på Bengans Café, han såg ut väldigt fräsch ut tillskillnad för ett tag sedan då det meddelades att han tog en paus från IN FLAMES för att ta tag i sitt alkoholberoende.
Dessutom såg det ut som Tomas Lindberg gjorde sin första dag på hyfsat nyöppnade Rockhouse Records.

Här kan Anders Lundin och Lasse BH slänga sig i väggen. Riktig allsång upplever man bäst i en trång konsertlokal full med hårdrockare och ett jäkligt taggat At The Gates på scenen. Galet klipp där publiken fullständigt överröstar Tomas Lindbergs sång. Man blir nästan tårögd.

Winter is closing out, Spring is slowing coming in, and as always, I’m attempting to balance out my weight. My lbs. have always fluctuated from skinny/little flat stomach to chubs/little unsightly stomach pouch. I blame it on the cold Chicago months, because I blame everything on the cold. I blame it on good food, because I love me some amazing savory, flavor-filled food. I also blame it on the stress of life, and the comfortable chair I have at my 9 to 5. Regardless of the culprit, I’m on my grind, I totally joined X-Sport (they have a sauna, duh) and the Ipod  I stole from Charles has been my best friend. I’ve deleted all of his MP3’s (aka Enigma’s “Return to Innocence” and the entire Incubus discography) and have added my personal MGB touch. Here’s some of the music on there.
