The final day of fashion shows at Eco Fashion Week S/S13 featured three shows showing a huge range of styles.  The first show was a group of six designers from Quebec, the second and final shows featuring local Vancouver designers.

Opening the evening was Myco Anna, a clothing and accessory label that mixes new and recycled fabrics.  The pieces feature the blocking of different fabrics, often with just a small element, drawing attention to the unique shapes.

Ressac bags were showcased.  Each bag is made of punctured inner tubes, which are collected from bike repair shops.  There was actually a second accessory designer, C5H8, who also created bags and belts from bike tires and air chambers.  Apparently there are a lot of flat tires in Quebec, but it results in unique materials that can be worked to look like leather and produce beautiful accessories.

The Respecterre clothing line from Quebec is a line of casual ware produced by an ecovillage community in Quebec, using eco-textiles such as bamboo, hemp and lyocell.

The Voyou line from Quebec is striving to create clothing accessible to everyone, while at the same time being reflective of their community.  The collection was soft and feminine, using a lot of cotton and natural fibers.  It felt very wearable and casual; perfect pieces for summer afternoons or garden parties.

The final show of the Quebec designers was from atelier b., a collection designed by two women who have always focused on combining ethical production, innovation and quality.  The pieces also felt very summer-daytime, but where more tailored and structured, the feeling was a bit more classic. There were a few men’s pieces and bathing suits as well, and some beautiful rope-inspired accessories.

The second runway set featured two designers, RISE Upcycling  and Standing Armed.  RISE considers itself a “collective”, a group of designers all working towards creating a mass market demand for used and upcycled clothing through the use of a branding image.  That image is a small red feather embroidered on each piece of clothing, intended to build logo power (think the Nike swoosh) and as they put “bring sexy back to thrift”.

The collection was young, fun and 80’s inspired and featured unique and interesting details in how the used garments were altered.  There were a lot of bright denims, cut off shorts and tanks.  You could see how the designers had reworked existing garments and created new unique pieces.  There was excellent added details, and of course a little red feather.

The Standing Armed collection was a strong contrast to the pieces from RISE, with graceful and easy femininity.  The S/S13 collection featured mostly soft colours and natural fibres, with added dimension using a beautiful brocade fabric.  The cut of the long dresses was very flattering and sexy, and had beautiful movement.  There were also some pieces with darker tones and black dresses perfect for summer evenings.

The closing show of the 5^th season of Eco Fashion Week was from veteran local eco-designer Melissa Ferreira’s Adhesif Clothing.  The S/S13 collection was a tribute to her past designs, as Adhesif will be celebrating their 10^th anniversary this coming spring.  Each of Melissa’s pieces uses vintage and/or recycled materials, creating a full collection of one-of-a-kinds.  Adhesif collections are commonly a lot of dresses, and always a large mix of textiles and patterns, creating playful and bold designs.  This year’s collection definitely didn’t disappoint and was a fabulous way to wrap-up the runway shows of Eco Fashion Week S/S13.

My highlights: the bright, cut-off denim shorts from RISE, with an added bow detail to the back pockets, making me wish I was still 18; a backless black dress from Standing Armed that floated down the runway and will never go out of style.

The four-day event kicked off with a contemporary dance runway  by Nicole Bridger-  a Vancouver designer who is influenced by divinity and love for the environment. The performance was breathtaking as the models strutted their stuff sans heels and interacted with the audience. Not your traditional catwalk is what I’m saying.

Day two featured the 68lb challenge with Kim Cathers- my inspiration and fashion hero from now on. The average spoiled North American tosses 68lbs of textiles and clothing items a year, and Cathers put together and entire line of haut couture from 68lbs of Value Village discarded materials. Isn’t that the most epic thing you’ve heard? I wish I had her sewing skills, her designs were more contemporary and chic that gowns you’d find in Topshop!

You can check Ms.Cathers out at Kdon designs, I would do it. I would also buy a sewing machine. I did and I am terrible so far, but, since I am ambitious when it comes to fashion  I figure in a year I’ll be Cathers-Creation ready.

Day three of the runway series was just as fantastic with Adhesif clothing, by Vancouverite Melissa Ferreira, who shared the brilliant color scheme for spring/summer 2013. Lucky me- I have tons of purple and orange, now to find some fuchsia.

Inspired by sustainable fashion and Eco-friendly designs, yet I left feeling like the least-best dressed in the room.

It was a pleasure to see MYCO ANNA , RESSAC, RESPECTERRE, VOYOU & C5H8 by Ethik-BGC + atelier b. from Quebec. I liked the simple, well-made clothing from atelier b. I was intrigued by the styling and spoke to the designer who said most of the rope accessories were from a Quebec Designer but done in conjunction with atelier b. designs. MYCO ANNA had very interesting designs. The detail on a black top and skirt was very striking. Often Eco Designers use too many knits and they can become predictable, this designer used knits in a very interesting way.  The recycled rubber bags and belts from C5H8 by Ethik-BGC were really unique and again well made. I hope we can see more of what Quebec has to offer and perhaps have Vancouver Eco-Designers go to Montreal.

Two Vancouver favourites, Standing Armed and Adhesif were the last to show their collections. Standing Armed had lovely, simple dresses, skirts and jackets all accessorized with brass necklaces. The brocade fabric used in some of the designs looked like Indian sari material. Brocade is use extensively in the Baroque fashion trend. The designs were all simple and very wearable.

Adhesif, a long time Remaker designer, showed her quirky style with striped skirts, a scarf burgundy print  dress and a dress with striped bodice. All Spring/Summer 2013 trends. Fleuvog shoes and Bronsino belts were used to accessorize.

The last day of Eco Fashion Week was the speaker series that was well attended by students studying fashion and industry professionals. Social Alterations, a non-profit group, collects fabric ends that they sell every month to the public and designers. This prevents it from going into the landfill and provides affordable fabric for designers.

Greenpeace had an interesting presentation detailing the significant amount of pollution in rivers in China. The pollution and poisons are coming from the fabric processing and printing industry. SustainU gave us hope for the future with a new multi-million dollar plant in the USA that re-spins fibers from waste for all kinds of new products. Finishing off the speakers series was Mellissa from Adhesif  who walked us through her process of reclaiming fabric from used clothing and remaking it into something fabulous.
