This post is about the desktop operating systems that fly under the radar of most people. We are definitely not talking about Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, or even BSD or Solaris. There are much less mainstream options out there for the OS-curious.

These alternative operating systems are usually developed either by enthusiasts or small companies (or both), and there are more of them than you might expect. There are even more than we have included in this article, though we think this is a good selection of the more interesting ones and we have focused specifically on desktop operating systems.

As you will see, many of them are very different from what you may be used to. We will discuss the potential of this in the conclusion of this article.

Enough introduction, let’s get started! Here is a look at 10 alternative operating systems, starting with a familiar old name…

AmigaOS 4.1

This month (September 2008) AmigaOS 4.1 was released. Although AmigaOS is a veteran in the field (many have fond memories of the original Amiga computer), its current version is a fully modern OS.

AmigaOS only runs on specific PowerPC-based hardware platforms. The company ACube is currently marketing and distributing AmigaOS and is going to bundle the OS with their motherboards.

Source model: Closed source

License: Proprietary

Platform: PowerPC

State: Final

Haiku

Haiku is an open source project aimed at recreating and continuing the development of the BeOS operating system (which Palm Inc. bought and then discontinued). Haiku was initially known as OpenBeOS but changed its name in 2004.

Haiku is compatible with software written for BeOS.

Source model: Free and open source

License: MIT License

Platform: x86 and PowerPC

State: Pre-Alpha

ReactOS

ReactOS is an operating system designed to be compatible with Microsoft Windows software. The project started in 1998 and today it can run many Windows programs well. The ReactOS kernel has been written from scratch but the OS makes use of Wine to be able to run Windows applications.

Source model: Free and open source

License: Various free software licenses

Platform: x86 (more under development)

State: Alpha

Syllable Desktop

Syllable is a free and open source operating system that was forked in 2002 from AtheOS, an AmigaOS clone. It’s intended as a lightweight and fast OS suitable for home and small office users.

Source model: Free and open source

License: GNU General Public License

Platform: x86

State: Alpha

SkyOS

SkyOS is a closed source project written by Robert Szeleney and volunteers. It originally started as an experiment in OS design. It’s intended to be an easy-to-use desktop OS for average computer users. Well-known applications such as Firefox have been ported to run on SkyOS.

Source model: Closed source

License: Proprietary

Platform: x86

State: Beta

MorphOS

MorphOS is a lightweight, media-centric OS build to run on PowerPC processors. It is inspired by AmigaOS and also includes emulation to be able to run Amiga applications.

Source model: Closed source

License: Mixed proprietary and open source

Platform: Pegasos, some Amiga models, EFIKA

AROS Research Operating System

AROS is a lightweight open source OS designed to be compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 but also improve on it. The project was started in 1995 and can today be run on both PowerPC and IBM PC compatible hardware. It also includes an emulator that makes it possible to run old Amiga applications.

Source model: Open source

License: AROS Public License

Platform: x86 and PowerPC

MenuetOS

MenuetOS, also known as MeOS, is an operating system written entirely in assembly language which makes it very small and fast. Even though it includes a graphical desktop, networking and many other features it still fits on a single 1.44 MB floppy disk (for our younger readers, that was the USB stick of the 80s and early 90s ).

Source model: Open source (32-bit version), freeware (64-bit version)

License: Menuet License

Platform: x86

State: Beta

Read more at the MenuetOS website.

DexOS

DexOS is an open source operating system designed to work like the minimalistic ones on gaming consoles, but for PCs. Its user interface is inspired by video game consoles and the system itself is very small (supposedly this one also fits on a floppy disk, like MenuetOS) and the OS can be booted from several different devices. Its creators have tried to make it as fast as possible.

Source model: Free and open source

Platform: x86

Visopsys

Visopsys is a one-man hobby project by programmer Andy McLaughlin. The development began in 1997 and the OS is both open source and free. Visopsys stands for VISual Operating SYStem.

Source model: Open source

License: GPL

Platform: x86

State: Final

The OS future

Even if none of these operating systems ever were to “make it” and become mainstream (and admittedly, some of them simply are not intended to be mainstream), the passion behind them is real, and many have the potential to introduce new and fresh ideas.

All this independent development can act as a kind of think tank, if you choose to look at it that way. It’s quite possible that concepts introduced by a niche OS will later be adopted by a larger player on the OS market.

There are lots of interesting things happening today with the rise of virtualization and the “always online” nature of today’s computers that opens up incredibly interesting possibilities. For example, what we have read about Microsoft’s internal research OS Midori (the one that will retire Windows) sounds highly interesting.

Wherever the future operating systems may come from, be it from the already established players or some kind of newcomer, we are looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for us. We suspect that there is a significant “jump” in the evolution coming up just around the corner.

Who knows, a couple of years from now maybe all the computers here in the Pingdom office will be running the UltraMagicalSuperVirtualOS version 1.2?

What are your predictions for the future of operating systems?

God botherers. Man, they give me the creeps: they fuck with my chakras and meridians big time. Deluded fundamentalists, all of them. Lonely lost little humans, unable to cope with the indifference of Nature and the enormity of the Universe, so they conjure up an imaginary friend in order to help them deal with their reality, and then they run around spouting propaganda down the throats of all those who don’t have an imaginary friend. Telling the non-believers they’re shameful sinners and they’re going to burn in hell (or at the stake) if they don’t hurry up and start believing. Perpetrating heinously vile acts against fellow humans in the name of (and with apparent permission from) their invisible friend. Quite hysterical en masse: totally irrational. Wankers.

Harsh, you may say, but so what? My words are nowhere near as harsh as the actions of the psychotic Crusaders and Conquistadors of earlier times. Since when is genocide saving people? Did Hitler save the Jews, did he?

When you speak to a believer, and they discover your non-belief, and you see their ears close up and their eyes glaze over as they imagine you burning in their own private vision of whatever the fuck they think hell is, and you watch them become a brick wall and ignore whatever knowledge is passing from your lips because they’re too busy professing to want to save you (and your poor lost soul), well then, you may just form the same opinion as me.

There is simply no point in having a deeply philosophical conversation with a believer. They have wool in their ears as well as over their eyes, and they only see one answer to all questions. God. God did it/made it/wants it/needs it/teaches it/hates it/loves it…whatever. How about we made God, and everything that the God botherers think He wants is just their own ‘character defects’ projected onto the rest of the world. How about that?

Why must they incessantly try to convert me with their ridiculous propaganda? Bibles in hotels and leaflets in the mail and knocking on my door. Invading my personal space – not to mention the waste of trees – so they can try indoctrinating me into their mindset. You can’t trust somebody that only reads from one book. It’s all Propaganda. The word itself became common use in 17th century Rome due to the church. It was used to describe the congregatio de propaganda fide – the congregation for propagating the faith. Propagate comes from the Latin words propago and propagauis – to peg down, to propagate. To peg down, eh? Well, it seems to me that religion has been doing a marvellous job of that for the last three fucking millennia. Yay for them.

But they keep claiming they can save me. Save me from what? The beauty of the Earth and everything that dwells upon it? The wondrousness of the Cosmos? My intelligence? My Self? I’d rather not be saved from any of those things, I’d rather explore them.

I can’t understand why these freaks can’t just leave me the fuck alone to find my own answers to the Universe. They’re always imposing their allegedly ‘correct’ knowledge of the Universe upon the whole fucking world, while discrediting any other speculation on existence at the same. Spread the word, all that bullshit. Be a good little servant to God. These freaks get into positions of power on this planet – fingers on buttons, so to speak – and, still to this day, anyone who doesn’t believe is treated as a heretic: a heathen outcast deemed not worthy of attention.

Yet where would we be without these so-called heretics: the season-worshipping Pagans that developed agriculture, the shamans and naturopaths that have such knowledge of the natural environment they can find medicines anywhere on the face of the Earth, the scientists that questioned the Universe and brought about the modern era. These people helped the human race evolve. Where would we be without free thought?

The belief in God is like a remora on our psyche. A parasite: eating away at the Self and the Now, and gorging itself on our fear of the unknown, our fear of what is to come. Especially the fear of death. Because nobody knows what happens when we die, we make up fanciful stories of Heavens and Hells to cope with the stinking, rotting reality of death. To soothe our fear and sadness. Seriously though, what need of fear do we have? None. No need whatsoever: we are the smartest creatures on the planet, top of the food chain, with no known predators – except for ourselves – and yet we are full of fear.

Sure there’s something out there that’s bigger than us. It’s called the planet, it’s called the solar system, it’s called the galaxy, it’s called the universe, and it’s fucking massive. And we only have one lifetime to experience and enjoy (not destroy) this wondrous existence we call life.

It makes me nervous knowing that a good majority of the population suffer ‘delusions of divinity’ to the detriment of the planet and society Here and Now. To know that these numbskulls believe they’re ‘going to a better place’ in the ‘afterlife’, and to see them trash the shit out of their current place of residence (the Earth), their actual life, it really worries me. Seeing people constantly searching, hoping, for a controlling factor behind the seemingly random and out of control nature of the Universe makes me think humans can’t accept reality.

Call me a heretic, an infidel, an atheist, whatever. But, I only have one lifetime, one body, and one mind, to discover all that I can about this wonderful place, before this vessel becomes broken and beyond repair, and my energy gets recycled back into the Universe. I can see bad things happening over the horizon if the Muslims and the Christians can’t grasp reason and logic, and can’t get over the ‘differences’ in the way their imaginary friends present themselves.

If these oppressive, intolerant, dogma spouting bigots keep on ‘keeping on’, then we are all going to end up FUBAR. Just look at the last 2000 years of our history. These freaks keep repeating the same actions (wars, genocide, oppression, suppression) all because the next guy doesn’t think the way they do.

We must take the next evolutionary step and remove this illness from the collective consciousness, remove it from the organism that is the Earth, and remove it quickly, before we cause the extinction of ourselves and the planet.

I came across an interesting web-page today. It was all about different evils in the bible (rape, murder, human sacrifice and slavery, for instance) and impossibilities about the god of the old and new testament. It’s a particularly intelligent, if rude, site.

The most interesting thing I came across was a page about the definition of atheism. It brought up several curious thoughts, and has taught me a little as well.

Firstly, atheism is apparently not the combination of a (without) and theism (belief in a god). It is, according to this site, the combination of atheos (godless) and ism (belief, which was tacked on later). This means that it isn’t so much a person without belief in a god as it is a person with belief in Godlessness – a person who believes that there is no god. This certainly makes more sense, if you think about it, because our definitions are defined by popular use. For just one example of how that plays out: those who call themselves agnostics usually do so because they are undecided, and don’t know if there is a god or not. That would mean they don’t believe in a god. So with the definition of atheism I’ve found nice, they would be atheists. They don’t believe in a god, but they don’t believe there isn’t one, so we need to make sure we realise that they are agnostic, not atheist. Thus, atheism should be a belief that there is no god.

The reasons people like me prefer the lack of a belief definition is because it says right up front, “I don’t need faith to say I’m an atheist” and “this is not a belief, it is a disbelief.” However, we can’t always go by what is pleasant, so on this instance I’m going to have to say that atheism is indeed a belief that there is no god. If we find those who try to argue it takes just as much faith, then we shall argue with them, not just change our name.

So yeah, kinda rushed and quick, but I see the errors of saying that atheism is a lack of belief. It is not a lack of belief, it is a belief that there is no god.

HTTP: Apache V1.3.9
FTP: wu-ftpd 2.6.0
CVS: CVS V1.10.
DNS: Bind
Mail: QMail
