Few years back one of the main factors that stopped me from installing Linux on laptop was the Wi-fi

Few years back one of the main factors that stopped me from installing Linux on laptop was the Wi-fi support. Many prospective Linux users might have apprehension about installing Linux because of this legacy. One thing that you have to keep in mind when you start using Linux is that tomorrow will be years ahead of today in open source world. So buy the time you actually start using wi-fi, somebody somewhere might have developed the necessary driver usually by ingenious reverse engineering.

So here i have compiled various Laptop(wi-fi) providers and there Linux support sites and few comments

DELL(Broadcom)

Dell, with some help from Broadcom and Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has released a Linux friendly Broadcom Wi-Fi driver for both 32 and 64-bit Linuxes. For Dell users, this means that they now have Wi-Fi support for the Dell 1490, 1395, 1397, 1505, and 1510 Wireless cards.
So Dell Studio series and Inspiron Series will work.The drivers should work with any Broadcom card using one of the supported chipsets on any modern Linux

Download Driver-Direct Link

Support for Opensuse 11.x

Atheros

If you use Wi-Fi on your laptop, there’s an excellent chance you’re using Atheros chipsets for your wireless networking. Atheros’ silicon is in gear from Linksys, D-Link and Netgear to name but a few vendors.Atheros does a reasonable job to support Linux drivers. he MadWiFi driver for Atheros wireless cards are not included in the distribution as its HAL module is only available as proprietary. However, it is possible to use this driver.

Opensuse Link -Excellent Explanation

Intel

Drivers for the Centrino,2100/2200/2915 devices can be found in recent kernel so it is not necessary to install it seperately. It will be working out of the box for kernels after 2009 Jan

Acer (ATMEL)

These cards are also natively supported and hence should not be problem.

Linux Wi-fi compatibility

Wireless Adapter Chipset Directory compiled by HJ Heins. Please note the last updated date to make sure you have the latest information.

NDISWrapper

NDIS wrapper provides a additional layer which can support drivers designed for windows to run on Linux. Here is a list of drivers supported by NDISwrapper.But whenever available use native Linux Drivers.

STAY AWAY CARDS

The list may not be accurate and up to date

Prism54,Texas Instruments, Intersil

More Information

Network debugger Script

A very good diagnostic script for network problems of all kind (not only WLAN) can be found here

It is quite useful in getting help for your networking problem. Run it before you start asking questions.

Thanks to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for providing bulk of the information . Also to opensuse wiki

No caso do chipset SiS nada funcionará direito.

In the previous post, we looked at Infineon’s strengths in wireless. However, Infineon’s portfolio is still incomplete in the area of connectivity solutions, which are playing a major role in the convergence trend.

Infineon remains a minor player in Bluetooth. Infineon lacks much of the IP related to connectivity solutions. Infineon’s Bluetooth and GPS solutions use third-party software stacks. As a result, Infineon does not offer any combo chips for connectivity. There are none promised in the future, either. Most other major vendors offer combo solutions that provide space and power consumption savings.

After Broadcom acquired Global Locate, Infineon had to look elsewhere to offer a GPS solution. The company now partners with Epson to offer a GPS/A-GPS solution. Xposys integrates Epson’s GPS expertise with Infineon’s renowned RF know-how. Xposys has been winning praise for its higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. However, Xposys is a software-based GPS solution and its success depends on performance in the real world.

Lost Chance

Because Infineon’s deficiencies in connectivity extend beyond GPS, it could have partnered with the likes of Atheros with presence in multiple connectivity technologies. Infineon has near zero presence in the fast-growing wireless LAN market. Infineon’s play in WLAN for mobile devices is limited to providing Low Noise Amplifiers and RF transceivers. Infineon’s earlier plan to provide Atheros’s Wi-Fi solution alongside its baseband was not successful. This was bad execution considering that a similar approach by Qualcomm had worked, and Atheros’s Wi-Fi solution has been shipped in a multitude of dual mode 3G designs. Atheros provides solutions for all major connectivity options: Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. With their complementary portfolios, Atheros and Infineon would have made great partners. The combination would have had a complete portfolio except for an application processor. Alas, with Infineon partnering with Epson for GPS, such an alliance is unlikely now.

Application Processor

Another important piece of a mobile phone that is absent from Infineon’s portfolio is the application processor. Flash memory is the most expensive piece of silicon in a mobile phone. Where they are discrete parts, application processor is in a close race with baseband IC for the second spot on a BoM.

In the iPhone, its most popular design win to date, Infineon’s baseband processor and RF transceivers work in conjunction with Samsung’s (or is it Apple’s own?) application processor. Even if speculation of Apple working on a home-grown application processor proves to be false, Apple is unlikely to switch to a combination application processor+baseband processor approach anytime soon. Performance is at the heart of iPhone, not cost concerns. Infineon might be able to hang in there for a little longer.

Infineon could lose if Qualcomm’s efforts to have a piece of iPhone hardware were to bear fruit. It would be interesting to see if Qualcomm can entice Apple with an irresistible part. This is more likely with a combo communication processor, if Apple were to introduce a lower-priced, reduced performance model in the iPhone lineup. In the meantime, Infineon should partner with an application processor provider to be able to complete with other major players.

In sum, the lack of internal IP for complete connectivity and of an application processor will hurt Infineon’s chances of design wins. Partnerships are necessary to close the holes and provide complete platform solutions.

Atheros, a Wi-Fi chipmaker, said today it’s agreed to buy Intellon, a maker of chips that turn

Atheros, a Wi-Fi chipmaker, said today it’s agreed to buy Intellon, a maker of chips that turn the home’s electrical network into a conduit for broadband, for $244 million. While most of us use Wi-Fi for our home network, it needs a stronger — and more reliable — wired infrastructure to aggregate and move the ever-increasing amount of HD video streams, music and telephony around. Which is why Atheros CEO Craig Barratt, while discussing his company’s proposed acquisition of Intellon on a call with financial analysts, described powerline networking technology as the backbone of the home network.

Indeed, today’s announcement makes clear that Wi-Fi is not everything to everyone. Of course, Intellon’s strong gross margins and talk of sequential quarterly growth helped endear it to Atheros (and to the analysts on today’s call) as well. Intellon said in July that gross margins for its most recent quarter had exceeded 50 percent, and that revenues had increased 14 percent on a sequential basis. Intellon has done well selling its powerline chips into the European IPTV market, and has seen increasing interest in them for smart grid applications. It’s also been hawking Ethernet over coax solutions into China, and has been investing in the upcoming G.hn wired home networking standard.

Given all this, the combined company will be positioned strongly for the future, as more carriers in the U.S. and in other markets look for both wired and wireless network capabilities to integrate into their residential gateways and set-top boxes in order to move digital content throughout the home.

So what does this acquisition mean for other Wi-Fi providers? Most will need a wired solution to leverage in-home wiring, such as coax or powerline. While Broadcom has already made a big strategic acquisition of MoCA (coax-networking) provider Octalica, this move by Atheros might pressure the company to shore up its powerline technology, especially given that MoCA is largely a U.S.-centric play. Other HomePlug players include Gigle Semiconductor and Coppergate (which acquired the HomePlug assets of Conexant), while Spain’s DS2 offers a competing powerline technology in UPA.

One way or another, the home network will continue to evolve, as I wrote about in a recent analysis over at GigaOM Pro (subscription required). In the meantime, Atheros’ acquisition of Intellon is just more proof that we are indeed moving towards the vision of a multilayered media network first envisioned so many years ago.

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic

Menuruti perintah akhirnya saya restart notebook, tapi upss… wireless atheros koq gak aktif ya?!

    $ sudo apt-get install build-essential

Download driver madwifi dari sini dengan perintah:

    $ wget http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-current.tar.gz

Disable Atheros Hardware Access Layer (HAL) and Support untuk Atheros 802.11 wireless lan cards melalui menu System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, kemudian reboot (jika diperlukan). Edit berkas linux-restricted-modules-common untuk memastikan modul ath_hal tidak lagi dimuat

    $ sudo gedit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common

Tambahkan ath_hal pada Disabled_Modules.

DISABLED_MODULES=”ath_hal”

    $ tar xzvf madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-current.tar.gz

Masuk ke direktori dimana madwifi Anda letakkan, gunakan perintah:

    $  cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4068-20090705

catatan : madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4068-20090705 adalah nama direktor/folder hasil untar file madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-current.tar.gz
Kemudian Jalankan script madwifi-unload dan find-madwifi-modules.sh, gunakan perintah:

    $ sudo ./madwifi-unload
$ sudo ./find-madwifi-modules.sh $(uname -r)

Keluar dari direktori madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4068-20090705, gunakan perintah:

$ cd ..

Jalankan perintah berikut untuk memastikan driver terdahulu bersih.

$ make clean

Masuk kembali ke direktori madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4068-20090705, Jalankan perintah-perintah berikut:

$ make
$ sudo make install
$ sudo modprobe ath_pci

Sampai tahap ini driver atheros sudah terinstal.
