Thursday night, voices of Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas broadcasted loudly in the background—n

Thursday night, voices of Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas broadcasted loudly in the background—nothing from the norm of any night at 6 p.m. (in my house). Except this night “Noticiero Univision” (Univision News) captured my attention even more. For those close to me it would be no surprise I’d listen more closely to news about the Dominican Republic, but this time the news had captured my attention because of the day I just had.

Univision featured the National Commission for the Society of Information and Knowledge (CNSIC) president, Jose Rafael Vargas, reporting a 69.4% internet access increase in the Dominican Republic. Over two-million Dominicans have joined the World online this past year, which is a triumphant victory for the impoverished island.

This interested me even more because earlier I had been following the Twitter posts covering the Center for Social Impact Communication’s panel discussion about the Pan-African role of digital communications and social media. (Key points were posted for those unable to attend the actual panel discussion.) The panelists presented insightful facts, including “Internet growth rate in Africa about 800%,” which proved to be pretty impressive, but is really only a 5 percent penetration rate in Africa. The highlight of my reading was a comment I read by R. Bhargava. Founding member of the 360 Digital Influence Team at Ogilvy and author of award-winning publications, Bhargava stated, “the future of ‘Brand Africa’-continue to see rise of individual stories, different from the continent as a whole.”

Could this be the same thing around the world—not just in Africa? Is there a worldwide increase of individuals joining online discussions and sharing their individual stories? Yes, and now more than ever. The numbers presented by the CNSIC president and panelist members at the Georgetown University panel discussion had proven this fact to be true.

It became more relevant when I thought how this personally related to me. Just this month, my cousin—a new member of Facebook en Español—had traveled to Santiago Atitlan (Guatemala) and posted very beautiful images on his Facebook account of Lake Solola. Separated by thousands of miles, we shared messages about our lives and experiences; just like we were chatting at the neighborhood bus stop (like the good-old days).

The more and more I follow this new social media trend, my interest becomes centered on global development. The online communities we are forming, are not only with our neighbors and closest friends, but with individuals from many different walks of life and geographical locations. These individuals share common interests and stories.

I hope this development translates into other countries!

Ilja

Up to 2008 Cayaya Birding organized Christmas Bird Counts in Tikal and at Atitlan Volcano, and on 2009 we will begin the tradition Antigua Guatemala.

In 2008, a total of 48 observers participated at Atitlan Volcano, and 42 in Tikal. Among the observers were several birdwatching novices, showing that Christmas Bird Counts help the Guatemalan birding community to grow. See the reports of both counts: Atitlan Volcano and Tikal, and the coverage of Christmas Bird Counts in the Guatemalan press.

6AM on our last full day in Guatemala came far too early- it was mostly dark as we loaded our bags into Quique and Penny’s Toyota SUV and struck east on Guate’s main highway CA-1, saying goodbye to the incredible people we’d met and their unforgettable stories… Edin’s son begging him not to spend his shoe money on yet another octavo with his drinking buddies, Isaias’ journey on foot from Guatemala to Phoenix, then in a packed van driven by a coyote to Nueva York at age 17. Now he’s 20 and a hero to his community. Nothing like getting to know an illegal immigrant to change your perspective on illegal immigration.

The people of Santiago de Atitlan are noted for their worship of Maximon(San Simon de Guatemala), an idol formed by the fusion of traditional Mayan deities, Catholic saints and conquistador legends. Gifts are offered to Maximon for good fortune. Coca Cola and liqueur are often given (note the cigarette in Maximon’s mouth).
