In the interview, Yanovsky talks about how brands can use music as “the framework for their marketing”. Check out some excerpts below at the link:

Sun Kil Moon—Ghosts of the Great Highway Caldo Verde, 2003 Between the band name and ten song titles

Sun Kil Moon—Ghosts of the Great Highway
Caldo Verde, 2003

Between the band name and ten song titles on the debut of Mark Kozelek’s post Red House Painters project, the names of four boxers and one Judas Priest guitarist are mentioned. Often sprawling, gorgeous odes to past relationships and experiences, the songs of Ghosts of the Great Highway work like telescopes to memories of old photographs when set among these real life characters of pop culture. Kozelek has always relied on objects of focus for his imagery—even in the Red House Painters days, there was always a “Rollercoaster” or a “Blue Guitar” he would utilize to get a point across. Though Highway is at best a very loose concept album, Kozelek’s focus is uniform in that these characters become his main source of expression. Granted, it’s not entirely clear what sort of significance they hold in his life—or why we should think they are important—but in the end, that’s not the point. The point is they were significant enough for Kozelek to devote a record to them, and a few people cared enough to listen. Yes, Kozelek still has that stubborn take-it-or-leave-it approach about him, but he also still has one of the best voices in music—a voice that sends the 14-minute-plus “Duk Koo Kim” into epic territory. (Note: This was the RGH selection for best album of 2003.)

Deerhoof—Friend Opportunity
Kill Rock Stars, 2007

One of the coolest things about music is that it does not have to make any sense whatsoever. Sure, there are “rules” and there is “theory” that one can follow if one so chooses, but if one does not, there is no Music Police that will hunt them down if all their songs don’t stick to the verse/chorus/verse formula. Deerhoof know this, and for many years, they have shamelessly produced what many have called “noise”, “crap”, “talentless garbage”, etc. But like a lot of bands that have stuck around and put out albums relentlessly (see Animal Collective), Deerhoof have carved their own little niche into rock music, a niche that cannot really survive without them in it. It’s brilliant, really—how else do you simultaneously justify and solidify your existence? It certainly can’t happen without releasing at least one album like Friend Opportunity, an album that is simultaneously anti-rock and rock tribute, while all the while being so much more. “The Perfect Me” is the perfect opener, wielding a stabbing, infectious guitar/keyboard riff which sounds like some drugged out cousin of Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life”. Deerhoof prove with the following “+81” that their weirdness does not come without pop sensibilities, but predicting what comes next might prove difficult—the beauty of “Whither the Invisible Birds”, the chaotic cadences of “Cast Off Crown”, and the final apocalypse that is “Look Away” are not the everyday rock and roll fare…and that’s a really good thing. (Note: This was the RGH selection for Best Album of 2007.)

The Darkness—Permission to Land
Atlantic, 2003

The Darkness pissed people off in the same way Guns N’ Roses pissed people off back in their day. The only difference, of course, is that when Guns N’ Roses did it, they were on top in the music industry and could not be stopped. The Darkness may have been huge at one point, but they were never overwhelmingly huge—maybe it had something to do with the attitude they adopted being seen as an “old-fashioned” way for bands to act. Or maybe, the music itself was seen as old-fashioned. It is a throwback, but certainly one of the more glorious ones in recent memory. Justin Hawkins’ vocals embody the spirits of Freddie Mercury and Rob Halford—purely metal intentions with a penchant for falsetto and operatic hijinx—while brother Dan’s guitar skills would even be intimidating to the likes of Journey’s Neal Schon. Most importantly, Permission to Land comes chock full of hooks galore from beginning to end. Present of course is the karaoke/drunk party sing-a-long fave “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, but more notable are unshakable power pop gems like “Growing on Me” and “Love is Only a Feeling”, and the impossible-not-to-sing-along-to “Get Your Hands off My Woman”.

The southern region of Algarve offers some of Portugal’s best diving opportunities and, even though it is in the water of the Atlantic which is colder and doesn’t offer as much visibility as the Mediterranean, it remains Portugal’s main diving destination owing to the varied marine life and extraordinary cave diving adventures. You don’t have to dive too deep to discover some of Algarve’s hidden jewels. Diving just ten metres below the surface will open up a kaleidoscope of sea creatures- rock lobsters running into crevices and star fish and cuttlefish swimming in an extraordinary display of yellows and reds.

Cave Dives

The three caves of Sagres offer an exciting opportunity to get up close and personal with Algarve’s underwater stalactites in large cave rooms. Dive up to 24 metres into these rocky labyrinths. If you look out from Sagres Harbour you’ll see two islands. The islands offer magical dives and boast some beautiful rocky outcrops and an underwater cave and have many areas protected from the wind that provide an ideal habitat for marine life. Some of the exotic creatures you’ll come close to around these islands are sea breams, damsel and star fish and even spider crabs. The Shadow Canyon in Sagres will provide you with an ethereal view of light from above and marine life in the form of octopi and nudibranchs abounds.

Dives a little south of Sagres, off Lagos in the Algarve region, are no less magnificent. The variety of volcanic rock and outcrops would hold any geologist enthralled. Rocha Negra offers a volcanic rock wall dive of 16 metres below sea level. The volcanic rock is visible above sea level and the rock wall is up to seven metres high and offers intriguing large overhangs. Expect to see bass and fan corals. For colourful corals and interesting groupings of rock, you can do no better than Porto de Mos. The deeper reef dive of Rondão do Alvor has many flat-topped rocks, sitting at interesting angles and provides hours of exploration opportunities. Dive into the long cave to discover the hidden spider crabs.

If you aren’t a certified diver and prefer to snorkel, there is an opportunity for great snorkeling near the coast at Ponta da Piedade, which is near Lagos. The shadows thrown out by the caves in the sunshine and the eerie green waters make these a magical experience for snorkelers. The waters of the Algarve offer something for everyone, and they should definitely be at the top of your scuba diving list.

Steel Pier menutup pintu pada Hari mengembalikan jati diri bangsa Buruh Weekend untuk terakhir kalinya. Bau laut udara laut gulali popcorn dan hot dog sudah hilang selamanya. The Pier diperluas ke Samudera Atlantik hampir . kaki.

Cascais is a town on the Atlantic Ocean about 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, Portugal. It is a cosmopolitan suburb of the Portuguese capital and one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugals royal family in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Nowadays it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists. It has a regional airport in Tires Airport Municipal de Cascais.

Cascais was once a little fishing village that has now become one of the wealthiest areas of Portugal and tourists favourite.

Cascais is protected from the strong winds of the Atlantic which can be felt further along the coast and fishing boats still line the fishermans beach for this reason.

King Luis I started the aristocratic trend for building palaces and mansions here when he made the Citadela his summer home in 1870. Fifty years later the creation of the first electrified rail line stretching from Lisbon to Cascais also brought increasing wealth to the town. The greatest economic boost to the region came with the outbreak of World War II, during which Cascais became the home of dozens of royal exiles and their entourages.

The bars alongside the beaches are very busy throughout most evenings but the town centre is surprisingly quiet after midnight, as most revellers head to Lisbon for their all night partying.

The British visitor will find a large number of English and Irish themed pubs for those who cannot bear to miss Premiership football or rugby games.

For those less concerned with finding a home away from home Cascais has a wide range of quality restaurants and bars where English is spoken.

The road leading out of Cascais towards Guincho passes the Boca do Inferno, a jagged cavity in the rocks that meet the Atlantic. The sea comes flowing through the natural arch creating a whirlpool within the enclave. It was here that the self styled magi and Great Beast of the Apocalypse Aleister Crowley faked his suicide in the hope of shaking off his pursuing creditors. The Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa assisted him in this endeavour, and it may well have been due to Pessoas poetic imagination that the Great Beast decided to attempt his sham suicide at the Mouth of Hell.

Today there is a large yacht harbour and several small sand beaches in and around town. Cascais is easily reached from Lisbon by car, or by frequent inexpensive commuter trains.

Ericeira is a fishing village 50 km northeast of Lisbon, 25 km from Sintra and 10 km from Mafra. It has the Atlantic Ocean as an eternal companion. Out of this relationship, the sun has given the best of its light and an ocean of traditions has been born.

The hospitality of its people, the harmony of the old village with its narrow cobblestone streets, characteristic housing, singular monuments, the sea, the fishing, the cuisine, the bold Atlantic views and the multiplicity of cultural programming interlace here in a grand way to welcome its visitors.

Its fine seafood restaurants have made the town very popular as a place to enjoy an evening out with friends.

Ericeira is also well known amongst the surfing community, who travel from around the world to take advantage of the powerful Atlantic waves that can be found here.

Walking down through the old village with its picture square painted houses and cobbled streets the visitor passes a variety of restaurants, all offering exceptional seafood menus. The seafront offers wonderful sunsets and interesting places of worship, such as the St Sebastian chapel.

In 1910 Ericeira became the point of departure for the royal family when they were forced to leave Portuguese shores and take sanctuary in the UK.

The Portuguese republican movement had developed a powerful base of support in Lisbon where half the countries teachers, doctors and accountants resided.

Thirty per cent of Portugals industrial employees worked in or near the city and dozens of newspapers were appearing to cater for the political culture taking root in the capital. Junior army and navy officers, factory workers, journalists and civil servants were joining together to be initiated into the Carbonari secret society that had spread from Italy to Portugal.

The Carbonari were dedicated to the overthrow of the monarchy and the rolling back of the powers of the church. The signal for the revolution to roll came from the naval ship Admastor on 4th October 1910. The monarchy was caught completely unawares by the speed of events. King Manuel II was playing bridge with the visiting president of Brazil, when he was advised to travel to Mafra where the royal family spent their final night, before sailing into British protection from the shores of Praia dos Pescadores in Ericeira.

In the heart of the village sits the Casa da Cultura of Ericeira. This contains a library, auditorium and art gallery named after Jaime Lobo e Silva, a local band conductor and historian who died in 1943. There are regular performances of classical music by world class musicians that at a mere 3 euros entrance fee should not be missed.

Confirmation of an impending Google phone, the Nexus One, has the tech world in a lather, but detail

Confirmation of an impending Google phone, the Nexus One, has the tech world in a lather, but details about the phone itself remain scarce, and, true to form, Google’s public statements are limited to posts on the company’s blog. The touchscreen handset will be offered through Google’s web site, according to All Things Digital, and will launch with the help of T-Mobile USA but won’t enjoy the benefit of a carrier-subsidized price tag. Below is a quick rundown of all that we know, what we don’t know, and what the long-awaited Google Phone might really mean:

What it is:

Pictures from Engadget confirm that the Nexus One’s design is similar to the HTC Bravo that appeared on a leaked company road map for the first half of 2010. The phone supports Wi-Fi and appears to come loaded with Google Navigation and the new Google Goggles, an image recognition app that uses photos to search the web.

The phone uses GSM technology — an option Google pursued after Verizon Wireless declined to help Google push the device, according to All Things Digital. And the phone will be sold unlocked, allowing consumers to use SIM cards to make calls on the networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. Whether the handset will support 3G bands for both carriers, though, is unclear — and, as Kevin at jkOnTheRun notes, highly unlikely.

There are also rumors that it supports Flash and has a 5-Megapixel camera.

What it will cost:

The biggest question surrounding the Nexus One is its price tag. Unsubsidized high-end handsets such as Nokia’s N900 typically cost between $500 and $800, leaving them well out of the reach of most consumers. Google may look to lower the price by subsidizing the phone itself — perhaps with advertising dollars — but the company remains mum on its plans.

Nexus One owners may have to pay a hefty sum for the hardware, but they may be able to take advantage of T-Mobile’s discounted “Even More Plus” plans for service. The prepaid, no-contract plans debuted in October without support from subsidized handsets and are targeted at users who already have a phone or are willing to pay full price for the hardware. The plans, which T-Mobile touts as “1/2 the price of comparable AT&T or Verizon plans,” include an unlimited-everything option for $80 a month and a voice-only unlimited offering for $50 a month.

What it means:

It’s easy to pit Google’s Nexus One against Apple’s iPhone in a battle of smartphone heavyweights, but the the company’s strategies are still very different. Apple continues to embrace subsidies and target consumers with affordable devices, while Google’s upcoming phone could be prohibitively expensive and will likely be targeted directly at developers. The move is likely to effectively spur development of some innovative new Android apps, which certainly is a primary goal for Google. But it might also be a first step toward opening consumers’ minds to the concept of unsubsidized phones that someday can move from network to network. That’s an objective Google has been working toward since 2007, when it began lobbying the FCC to adopt open-access rules that require mobile carriers to support any device or app that can connect to their networks. The rules were adopted at last year’s spectrum auction, giving Google the opportunity — in theory, at least — to deploy a host of offerings across multiple networks. So Nexus One could be Google’s opening salvo in making that scenario reality

PC Magazine: It’s clear that American consumers want some sort of messiah to save them from the structure of our wireless industry. But it’s not going to be Apple, and it’s probably not going to be Google, either.

Wired: This may turn out to be a Zune-like move, where Microsoft alienated hardware makers by ignoring PlaysForSure in favor of its own new DRM scheme. Or the Nexus could be a light that burns twice as bright as all the existing confusion of Android handsets combined, thus building a brand that can rival the iPhone.

Since summer this year, AllSaints have launched a fully transactional US Site with a DC in New Jersey, meaning all US sales are now in dollars and are shipped within the US. Furthermore to the Atlantic-expansion, a concession began the store roll-out within Bloomingdales New York, followed by L.A Robertson and Miami is very close to opening. In the new year there will be a flagship in New York and Boston will follow. Additional language sites have made shopping even easier for French, Italian, German and Spanish speakers.

One of the most fascinating articles I have read in a long time: Most of us have genes that make us

One of the most fascinating articles I have read in a long time:

Most of us have genes that make us as hardy as dandelions: able to take root and survive almost anywhere. A few of us, however, are more like the orchid: fragile and fickle, but capable of blooming spectacularly if given greenhouse care. So holds a provocative new theory of genetics, which asserts that the very genes that give us the most trouble as a species, causing behaviors that are self-destructive and antisocial, also underlie humankind’s phenomenal adaptability and evolutionary success. With a bad environment and poor parenting, orchid children can end up depressed, drug-addicted, or in jail—but with the right environment and good parenting, they can grow up to be society’s most creative, successful, and happy people.

And while we’re on genetics, check out Kay Hymowitz’s City Journal article, “Femina Sapiens in the Nursery,” too.

Evolutionary psychologists are sometimes accused of not giving proper due to the flexibility of the human brain. In her recent book Mothers and Others, for instance, Hrdy argues that just as animal males don’t tend to their infants, so human fathers can’t be expected to hang around for the long run. But at their best, scientists are apt to describe the brain as chemically and neurologically predisposed to certain behaviors—nurturing babies in the case of women, for instance—while capable of adapting these behaviors to enormously varied environments. Sometimes those environments even change the brain’s chemistry, a process that the writer Matt Ridley calls “nature via nurture.” When Hrdy presumes the fecklessness of men, she underestimates the environmental pressure of social norms. The human record suggests that social norms, especially the universal one of marriage, can reinforce fathers’ ties to their children, which in turn might even become part of the male neural architecture. Recently, neuroscientists have even discovered evidence that married men’s testosterone levels fall at the birth of their baby.

I concede no opinions about ev-pscyh yet, but Dr. Science approves:

That is quite possibly the best account of the topic I have ever read! She pretty much gets everything right. The science doesn’t prescribe social policy, but rather informs it. How do we come to grips with all of the evolutionary inertia/path dependency that has built up over millions of years, reconcile it with our visions of what “the good life” ought to be, and set ourselves on a course to a better society?

That is the debate we ought to be having, but step one is accepting where we are at the moment with regard to our understanding of the world (science). And yes yes yes, our decisions about the kind of society we choose to create and live in will, over eons, create new selection pressures and reshape our evolutionary trajectory. And as Kay so eloquently points out, technology has already done a lot to change the selection pressures. Maybe a million years from now, our descendants will bemoan how much nature predisposes us to an asymmetrical paternal investment into offspring and they will create new technologies and social policies to swing nature back in the other direction once again.
