In over 540 beautifully colored and easily understood illustrations, it teaches the complete human body with unsurpassed clarity and accuracy. This new edition features 57 revised, 200 relabeled and 17 wholly new plates, drawn fully in the tradition of Frank Netter, and includes more imaging and clinical images than ever before.

By Jeff Parker (writer), Carlo Pagulayan (artist), Jason Paz with Noah Salonga (inkers)

The Story: Jimmy Woo makes Norman Osborn’s black list by returning the gold reserves that were stolen from the government two months ago. But no sooner he get back, he sets off on a private mission to get more information on Suwan and leaves his new ex-SHIELD administrator in charge. Unfortunately, there’s a problem at the Atlas Las Vegas Biolab. It’s gone feral with neglect and managed to annoy the Hulk. Then, it’s Atlas against the Incredible Hulk.

What’s Good: The strength of this issue owes itself in equal parts to art and story.

The art is detailed and expressive. For example, the expression on Bruce Banner’s face when he’s being drugged by the Atlas Biolab, the subtle touch of green in his eyes… simply beautiful. The Hulk’s transformation is fantastic as well. I haven’t seen a lot of artists take on the half-transformed Hulk and do a good job. Jimmy’s hovercar is a nice little retro touch, as is M-11 as always. And without a doubt, Mr. Lao the dragon is a never-miss always feast for the eyes.

The foreground story of the Agents battling the Hulk, was satisfactory, but unoriginal. The luminary part of the book was all the backstory development. Woo’s flashback in the dragon cave was just a conversation between him and Mr. Lao, but the content was so interesting and tense that Parker had me begging for more. The introduction of the Jade Claw was also a tantalizing dvelopment that will have me impatient for issue #9. Lastly, all I can say about Ken Hale the sniper is… cool.

What’s Not So Good: I couldn’t find much to complain about in this issue, but let’s pretend M-11 is forcing me. Then I’d have to say I’m indifferent to Venus. She’s one of the team’s powerhouses, but in terms of personality she’s really just an extra who also happens to be a plot device. That may change and I know there’s some interesting stuff to her (her non-human origin for example), but right now, almost everyone else is way more interesting than she is.

Conclusion: Pagulayan’s art, combined with Parker’s strong, well-paced un-ravelling of ancient and recent mysteries make this a very solid issue.

Grade: B+

I can’t believe I spent money on the 3rd edition CD-ROM atlas a couple of years ago. If you are a radiology resident, do not buy this! The image quality is poor, the resolution is awful, the images are too small even if you decrease the screen resolution, and the cross sectional images are worse than the images we acquire with extremely outdated county hospital equipment. The cross sections from the CT brain are acquired in an oblique projection, making them difficult to compare with the images obtained at most hospitals. The MRI images are way outdated. I just pulled up some angio images to go over vascular anatomy for the upcoming oral board exam and these images are awful! No celiac axis, no detailed pelvic vasculature. I am angry and embarrassed that I spent $80 on this. Fortunately, my book stipend paid for it. I don’t want you to make the same mistake. You should expect better quality images for such an expensive atlas.

The illustrations are of superb quality, and cover a wide range of images, including CT scans, MRIs, angiograms, etc. The only real limitation of the atlas is that it does not cover any pathological anatomy. We have used the Barrett atlas for MRIs in the past, but will probably discontinue using it since the Weir text has very similar MRIs. We will continue using the Wicke text, but the Weir text has figures comparable to a fair number of the Wicke figures, in addition to having the best array of MRIs, CT scans, angiograms, etc.

Outstandingly realistic three-dimensional photographs and illustrations, plus a consistent chapter organization, summary tables, and other user-friendly features, enhance readers’ mastery of essential information. It provides students with a unique resource for use before, during and after lab work, in preparation for examinations, and later on as a primer for clinical work. * LARGE PHOTOS, typically just one per page, taken in such a way as to be as intuitive as possible: so, no more squinting over a small photo or wondering where on the live body the dissection image might relate to; * DIGITAL PHOTOSHOP TECHNIQUES used on some of the dissections to color enhance structures and thereby combine the best features of a photo atlas and an artwork atlas like Netter (see p.9 of the sample chapter): so, no more puzzling over structures that are hard to distinguish from the background of the dissection, a criticism often levelled at photographic atlases; * Simple, non-parallel LEADER LINE LABELLING as opposed to matching numbers to a key at the bottom of the page: so, no need to spend time trying to find a number on a dissection, then matching it to a key at the bottom of the page; * ORIENTATION INSERTS when the dissection photo is an extreme close-up: so, students won’t be baffled anymore by close-ups they cannot understand;…….
Readmore
You are able to see the structures in the dissection, but I would like to see different angles of the dissection to get a full view of the structures.
“Fantastic. Review by former Physiology Fellow/Biochemist/Research Scientist” 2006-10-12
By Patrick D. Goonan (Pleasanton, CA)
This is a fantastic book and a bargain for the price. The photography is stunning. The choice of anatomical views and overall organization is superb. There is also a lot of histology content and it is well done. The same is true for the diagrams.

If you are taking a rigorous neuroanatomy class, this is a must have book. If you are not interested in this level of detail, it is still a great book to own at this price. I don’t think you will find anything even close to this quality for the cost.

The book is mostly color plates; however, the descriptive text is useful and concise. I give this text my highest recommendation and have no reservations about it. It is good for advanced, intermediate and beginner level studies. In short, it is a highly accessible text even for psychologists and therapists who don’t normally need this level of detail.

If you are a physician and what to show what is going on to a patient, this book is a perfect visual aid. However, the structures are real human brains, not diagrams. This may be a problem for some patients because there are also some very “visceral” cross sections through the head and skull that might be a lot for some people to handle.

As a GUILD CERTIFIED FELDENKRAIS PRACTITIONERcm, I found the surface anatomy pages particularly invaluable. The extraordinary illustrations on these pages enable one to view in precise detail the relationship between the surface landmarks of the body such the chest and shoulders and the specific bones which lie under these areas. Being able to view such a relationship is extremely helpful in my work. Indeed, these surface anatomy pages as well as the CT, MRI and x-ray images in Gray’s Atlas of Anatomy provide a very clear and vivid idea of what lies beneath…

“Comprehensive text” 2007-12-11
By Haemulon
This is an excellent text for medical histology. I have read this book cover to cover twice and highlighted the heck out of it. My opinion is that if you know this book, you will know general medical histology. At times the material is much more detailed than you will need to get through your Histo course, but it is well worth it for developing a greater depth of understanding. The book has excellent microphotographs and illustrations throughout, so you won’t be left wanting when the text gets really dense. Be forewarned though, this book has numerous errors. Most of them are small (like typesetting, spelling, and figure labels) but others are more fundamental mis-statements (or perhaps misleading statements) about molecular mechanisms and processes. These problems do not take away from the value of the text however, since the more significant errors are usually in the minutia and may just be a product of the publication lagging behind our evolving understanding of different processes. I would definitely buy and read this book again.

“The best Histology book that I’ve found.” 2007-10-08
By J. Greene (USA)
This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

Earlier this month, I shared with my readers what we all have in common with sea lions. Today, I’d like to reveal what we have in common with batteries.

Batteries, like the one shown above, have two terminals. One is marked (+), or positive; the other is marked (-), or negative. When properly aligned, the battery produces energy.

But what happens when the battery’s terminals aren’t lined up properly? It can’t function! Even a perfectly good, brand new, fully charged battery will not perform the way it’s supposed to if it’s misaligned.

Our bodies work in a similar fashion. The head, neck and spine need to be properly aligned in order for your nervous system to function the way it’s designed.

Health is your normal, natural state. At conception, two cells become four, four become eight, and so on until those original cells develop into trillions. This immensely complicated process doesn’t need help. If nothing interferes with it, children are born; healthy! So remember that as early as Day-1 we were designed to be healthy.

Upper Cervical Care is a system of analysis that focuses on the relationship between the spine and your nervous system. A fully functioning nervous system free of interference not only restores health, but it maintains health!

Even the healthiest of people can get sick as a result of spinal misalignment. This is why it’s necessary to have a chiropractor. You have a medical doctor… You have a dentist… and just like these professionals play an important role in your life, so does a chiropractor!

It’s time to get your power turned on.

The image below depicts a structural imbalance in the body resulting from upper cervical misalignment.

You might be surprised to learn that many cases of shoulder, back and pelvic pain are actually caused by a problem in the neck!

In an attempt to keep the eyes level with the horizon, your spine will bend, twist, and adapt as much as necessary.

Here’s what I want you to remember… If head/neck misalignment caused your pain sensations to develop, but you only address the other body parts that hurt, the problem will never go away.

When planning a trip you would want to know how far the destination is, how to get there exactly and

When planning a trip you would want to know how far the destination is, how to get there exactly and be sure not to miss the turn. So, you can get a GPS device and install in your car. But, if you don’t have a GPS device, then you will consult the map. Here is an amazing site that simplifies your work of getting directions. Fresh Logic Studios is a site that allows you to find directions in a very easy manner. Also, you don’t have to sign up with them to use this service. In the homepage, click on atlas where it takes you to a world atlas. This is simillar to the Google maps but it is more interactive. Of course, it must still update a lot for India, but you have enough locations to use this service. When you are on the atlas page, there will be a menu on the top with options such as directions, tools, etc.. Click on directions and a box will open up on the left side. This is where you enter the location. As shown in the snap below, I have entered Bangalore and a lesser known location called “Sagar”. There are two sagars and the app will ask you to choose which one. After that click get directions and you will get the detailed directions with where to make the turns and the distance (in miles) and estimated time to reach that location. You can zoom in and see and also print this on a paper with the print option shown in the red circle be on the third snap. Cool isn’t it?

Not only that, the basic menu also has the find location to find any location in the city. But it still needs to update its database. Although it shows the roads, it cannot show it in the atlas, it can show it on the satellite images. This can be enabled from the satellite menu in the right corner below the top menu. Refer the 4th image in the gallery for this. There are more options in the advanced tab as well. The events option will list the events that will be happening in the city. It works only for major cities. I tired Bangalore and got quite a few results. Click on the one you want and a new box opens up giving a little details. To know more just click event in this new box and it will open the relevant site. Really nice tool. The rest of the options still need updating. But the site is really cool and is functional for the Western countries. Also, on signing up you will get 1 GB space to store your files and you can make friends and update your location on the atlas. Also, there is the experimental section where the users’ tweets are displayed real time. Do check it out.
