So Gamespot has just announced that Demon’s Souls, a Western-styled Action-RPG developed by From Software in the East is their 2009 Game of the Year.

Needless to say, I think they made a great choice. I’ve been playing Demon’s Souls since it came out here in North America, and I can stand by their opinions.

In terms of story, I’d give it to Uncharted 2, but for an overall game award, Demon’s Souls has come a long way from being totally unknown to a sleeper hit, to now a well-deserved GOTY award.

Congratulations to From Software for making the game, and to Atlus for bringing it over!

MOAR SOULLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

The Nexus.

This game is the perfect example of 3rd person, RPG, role playing, multiplayer game… if that is a category. 3RPGRPM? Moving past that, I have to say I really enjoy this game, it just seems fresh amongst the other holiday titles. A perfect blend of open world environment but linear levels makes the player feel as if this is their own world they can never get lost in. Only thing is, this game is a cruel, evil mother. DS enjoys giving you a moment of triumph over an enemy than crushing you under its heel, over and over again. It can be rather frustrating when just starting out, but do not fear people dying a’int all that bad! I mean yes watching your self die a lot does blow but a sense of relief comes in once you are a sprit. Look if you are even remotely into RPGs just get this game, its fri’kin awesome. The feeling of the big V puts all those blood stains into perspective. This game will give you a sense of achievement like no other before it, plus the game have an event going on making the game easy… so ya jump on that wagon now!

P.S. READ THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET

P.S.S IF YOU DON’T YOU WILL FAIL HORRIBLY

Some detail (cuz this post is small)

Nexus/Arch Stones – A soul is for ever bound to the Nexus in DS. When you die, you become a spirit for ever trapped in the Nexus. This is a some what home for the player, a very cold one. You can travel to the Nexus while alive it is not just a place for dead people. You will be able to access a Blacksmith/Spell Teacher/ Miracle Teacher/ Stash/ Stat Upgrades are all available here. The farther you progress through the Arch Stones the more services you unlock. The Arch Stones are “dungeons” there are 5 you can travel to. Each one is very different from the other, its quite fun to explore each. Each Arch Stone ever has its own tale to tell deepening your understanding of the world. Honestly the Nexus is not a bad place to be, so do not worry if you get returned to it often. Do not be afraid of dying, it is just another chance to explore deeper into a dungeon or walk through a fog you were afraid venture into before or go try out a new Arch Stone. You must discover that this game is fine with you dying, so you should not worry about. One big tip is, go find your blood stain after death to collect all the souls you collected from before. Souls are your best friend in this game because this is the currency.

Class System – DS is a RPG with a God of Warish fighting style. If you have even played monster hunter, then you are a step ahead. To me this game is a single player version of monster hunter. The game does have you pick from a generic class at the start but with stat upgrades being picked by the player, these rigid class will often meld together in an ultimate fighter. So with the class system only being chosen for ease or aesthetics purposes players quickly worry about the choices ahead of them vs. keeping true to a class. So newcomers don’t you DARE ask me what class to pick (royalty) because it does not matter in the end! No class is better than another, so pick what looks cool to you.

Combat – DS has a very interesting combat system that we have all seen before but there is something different, the pace of combat. You move around just like you would in another other hack and slash, dashing around your foe slashing at them and the works. There is one major problem though, your damned endurance bar! Ever wonder how any hack and slash hero swung wildly for countless over to no end?! Well I never did until I played this game. I always thought swinging a sword would be fun but these heroes make it look like work! I mean god you swing the darned thing twice and you persons heart rate hits 4 digits. This makes the players dodge and guard attacks often so your foe is left exposed before you are willing to attack, otherwise you are just wasting that precious endurance. This massive change in fighting slows down* combat so much you and your enemy often walk to each other, just so you have energy left to fight. The game brings in some core ideas for RTS and implements them flawlessly into this RPG. I personally love this idea, it’s like someone just decided to make a game just for me. I always love RTSs, I honestly feel as if I have played them all. On the other hand RPGs bring so much to the table you just want that combo. DS has done that with their game, making the player thing before every blow making sure every move is the right one before swinging the sword.

* The whole game isn’t slow, it’s just the combat alone really I find slow.

Weapons/Magic/Miracles – So DS is not short on stuff to hit people with. You have to pay attention to what type of damage the weapon does. Swords just aren’t swords, this goes for any weapon. There is a break down to a vast amount of sub-weapons. This really does matter because what type of damage you are pulling on a foe. Branching away from your normal damage you can do Blunt, Slash, Pierce damage. You can imagine that certain types have their uses. I personally fall back on Asian swords most of the time, I like how fast they are and they cause bleeding in a foe. Magic is little bit easier to understand, you got offense, support and situational spells. Offense of course is where your damage is at. Support helps guard you against damage and element based attacks. Situational are for those odd moments in a game example is when a Black Soul invades your game. Magic is my fallback for when a monster has good close combat skill. The floating octopus men for example kill me in one hit, so I use magic to keep them at bay. There are tons of weapons to pick from each with their own dynamic upgrade path that makes the weapon feel personal. So make a choice and stick with it. Though I have been reading that a certain type of weapon ends up being the best but who cares, get that weapon on your ultimate character.

There is on last thing to mention about magic, healing and curing aliments is split from magic. They have their own category, Miracles. This requires a little talisman do-hicky. This of course lets you heal your self, cure poison or stop bleeding. Also, I have seen some later Miracles that return you to the Nexus and such, so there is quite a bit to consider.

Armor/Shields/Rings - Ok so armor, is armor, it defends crap, bigger it is slower you are. Shields are very important to me, I defend everything. Once again though, shields are just shields. Rings give you a buff, if you don’t know what that is…go wiki it. Ranges from anything to more crap you can carry to MP regeneration. There is a big debate doing on between people that use armor and those that don’t. Some are arguing that armor does nothing, saying they take about the same damage with none, then full elite armor. Since not wearing armor will speed you up it is quite an interesting idea. I think armor defends you, plus the resistance ups are very nice.

Multiplayer – DS has quite the interesting multiplayer, I have none like it before. You have the option at any time to leave a message for people to see. The content is determined by you but you pick from preset messages. If you come across a narrow hall way where you got ambushed, you can back track and leave a message for another player saying “Watch out for an ambush”. That player in return can recommend your message if they so chose to. This will fill your HP bar the instant they recommend or the next time you play the game. This is not all though you also have the option to invite players to your world or travel to another player’s world and the every evil invasion of another world. Being invited to another’s world or inviting some one over is a way to help some one out. You work together with the other player to bring down a boss or to get past a difficult area. When a player invades your objective is to kill the other player. You appear as a Black Phantom, if you kill a player while doing this you regain your body if not you’re returned to your world. If you kill a black phantom you get some souls…I’m not sure because it hasn’t happened to me yet (thank god). That about sums it up, honestly multiplayer in this game is just refreshing.

Ok if you like RPGs uh….. BUY IT!

Persona 4 changed the way I viewed RPGs. It was a huge step forward in role playing game storytellin

Persona 4 changed the way I viewed RPGs. It was a huge step forward in role playing game storytelling and despite the technical limitations of the PlayStation 2, it managed to suck me into its world for over 80 hours. In short, Persona 4 is amazing.

Now, having said that, I must be upfront about my experience with Persona 3: FES. I played this game after I played Persona 4…and even though I know most games in retrospect seem inferior to newer versions (which is why I always try to play the earliest games in a series first to get the maximum, intended effect from each one), I don’t think I’m alone in doing this with Persona games. While Persona 3 may have gotten quite a bit of praise upon its initial release, Persona 4 was more of a critical and mainstream hit than its predecessor, so I think a large chunk of its players experienced it after Persona 4, just like me. If you fall (or expect to fall) into that group, this review is for you.

I’ve been going back and forth for awhile trying to figure out what to say exactly when it came to putting my thoughts about Persona 3 in written form… …because what I’m about to say may sound horrible to Persona fans. But I must say it. I have to say it. If I don’t, I would be lying…and when it comes to games, I can’t bend the truth to make turds become gems.

Persona 3: FES is a disappointing and laborious experience. Even when not compared to Persona 4 the game falls far short of the standards set by other games in the genre over the years…so I can understand why it was only a niche hit years ago and not even in the same league as Persona 4. For starters, the story is abysmal. You start off almost immediately being caught up in a supernatural battle with no explanation whatsoever. Then you are living in a dorm with other students who go to High School and within a few weeks of school you are already part of school clubs, most likely dating, knowingly defending the world regularly and basically doing everything at the wrong pace.

Since RPGs rely so heavily on storytelling, the slowness at which the main plot unfolds is maddening while the character progression is often too fast for its own good (for example, super quick n’ easy dating or giving away too much too soon – like becoming part of the Dark Hour group). I didn’t have nearly the drive as I did in Persona 4 because the story takes forever to develop and even at 15 hours in I was bored out of my mind. At that point all I discovered was that during the Dark Hour monsters attack, there’s a giant building named Tarturus you have to explore and your classmates are mostly useless (including the ones you live with).

It’s weird. There’s no person to connect with, no mysterious story to get wrapped up in, no major hints towards what is going on for the first dozen or so hours of the game. Perhaps there was going to be a big reveal an hour beyond where I stopped playing, but it doesn’t matter. Point is, if an RPG takes over a dozen hours to even get you interested in the story, something is horribly wrong.

Even if the plot was a bit slower than usual in starting up, the battle and exploration systems could have made up for it if they were done well. Well, in Persona 3, expect nothing but major disappointment in both of those areas (especially if you liked Persona 4’s variety and depth).

In Persona 3, you must make your way up the colossal Tarturus one floor at a time. You can’t go down a floor once you go up stairs so if you didn’t explore enough or aren’t sure you can make it up several floors in one run to reach a teleport back to the ground level, you basically hit a road block. The enemies also seem much harder to avoid than they are in Persona 4 which leads to aggrivation on my end because there are many times when it’s better to sneak by than to fight certain baddies.

As far as the combat system goes, the battle design in Persona 3 is utterly broken. There’s a reason why you rarely see RPGs where the AI controls your opponents while you play: Because computer-controlled characters are idiots. Unlike Persona 4, you don’t have the option of controlling every action of all your characters. In Persona 3, your one, playable main character essentially turns into a healer by default because if you don’t heal allies, use items, replenish their skill points or revive them no one else will (or if they do, they’ll use the wrong thing at the wrong time). That stupid design decision turned even the most basic of battles into frustrating time wastes where you end up feeling like more of an observer than actual participant. It also made the battle system insanely shallow because if you can only control one character and not four, you’re going to play the game much “safer” and not even attempt to bite off more than you can chew enemy-wise and hope for the best. If you don’t have full control of your party, you don’t even have a chance to be strategic.

And to top it all off, we have an unforgiving exhaustion/fatigue system thing that effectively makes your characters useless if you try to grind and explore too much in Tarturus for too long. So, if you know you have X amount of time to level up before the next big event, you can really only do so much between now and then because if your teammates are exhausted for days on end (and sometimes outright refuse to go even if they’re rested). The whole tired/rested bit is one of the worst things I’ve seen in gaming ever. Imagine if you were playing a game that you needed to play a lot to build up your strength…and the game blocked you from playing every other day because it determined you were playing too much. What the heck.

Oh, and lets not forget the collection of Personas. The “not enough info” interface, menus, descriptions, etc. are much more vague than that of Persona 4 and will no doubt cause confusion for those who played P4 first (because a lot of Persona stat checking and collecting was required in it—and this was a non-issue in that title). It’s just not as easy, fun or rewarding to deal with Persona collecting or maintainance this time around.

The music and voice acting in Persona 3 are equally underwhelming and at times outright terrible. The looping, bizarre Japanese rap/pop songs are bad in a way you can only imagine and the voicework is forgettable. Don’t not be shocked if you press mute every now and then while in town. I will say that some tracks are okay (same with a few voice actors here and there) but unfortunately the bad outnumber the good in this department.

Last but not least, the characters in Persona 3 are lame. Well, at least the ones that you interact with for the first 15 hours or so. They all seem snobby or flat out stupid (one of the two extremes) and unlike Persona 4 where you looked forward to hearing what your group had to say, in this game your eyes glaze over and ears close when the key characters chat about whatever it is they like/don’t like at the moment. Plus, Junpei looks and sounds like a little twirp with that stupid soul-patch…I couldn’t stand that character at all (he looks awfully sickly as well – terrible character design).

But, on the upside, while you are zoning out during the story bits at least you have a few seconds to think about what other games you’d rather be playing instead.

Graphics: 7 | Sound: 4 | Play Control: 4 | Fun Factor: 4 | Final Score: 48%

Disturbingly hard but equally rewarding franchise, Etrian Odyssey is getting a third installment whi

Disturbingly hard but equally rewarding franchise, Etrian Odyssey is getting a third installment which adds something of a nautical theme this time around. Previous games took place in a familiar wooded setting whereas Etrian Odyssey III will “partially take place on the high seas” (via GoNintendo). Adding to that is a multiplayer mode allowing 5 players to sail around together. Character art and classes are getting a full overhaul with even more classes to choose from.

In case you’ve missed the series, Etrian Odyssey is a brutally hard RPG by Atlus (becoming known for their unforgiving RPGs) which had players draw their own maps as they explored a multi-leveled dungeon. Sounds boring but they are really quite fun – if you can handle having your party beaten by a butterfly.

So far the game is only announced for Japan with a teaser site available for all who can read kanji. Sadly, much like Rune Factory, Etrian Odyssey is still yet to have the second game released in Europe so the only chance we have is to import it when it comes to America.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, received its North American release in August 2003 and helped cement Nippon Ichi Software (NIS) as a fan-favourite publisher and developer. This was only the third game NIS released in North America, pre-dating NIS America (NISA), and was published by Atlus.

It's Disgaea, dood!

This inaugural chapter in the Disgaea series chronicles the misadventures of Laharl, the demon prince and would-be Overlord of the Netherworld. The game opens with Laharl waking from a two year nap to find one of his vassals, Etna, standing over him surrounded rather conspicuously with weapons. She informs him that his father, King Krichevskoy has died, and the Netherworld is in chaos with no recognized ruler. The player journeys with Laharl and his assorted vassals as he strives to claim and then maintain his birthright. Along the way he is joined by Flonne, an Angel Trainee from Celestia as well as Jennifer and Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth. Words simply cannot express the bizarre and hilarious nature of the group’s missions and interpersonal relationships.

Character design and development is truly where this game shines. Every character is brilliantly faceted, memorable, and generally hilarious. Captain Gordon is the typical cheesy 1930s comic hero, right down to his campy, bravado-riddled voice. Etna and Laharl are so unabashedly evil, and serve as wonderful foils for the love-obsessed, sweeter-than-sugar Flonne. Meanwhile, the denizens of the Netherworld are surrounded by Prinnies: essentially peg-legged penguins who scream “dood!” and explode at the slightest provocation.

Another selling point of the game is its battle system. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a turn-based tactical RPG. Characters move or throw each other across a map and attack enemies using an assortment of physical, magical, and otherwise ’special’ attacks. A key element to the battle system, this game’s je ne c’est quoi is the Geo Panel system. The map may contain Geo Symbols, items that add certain extra effects to map panels that are the same colour as the panel the Geo Symbol is on. There are a wide variety of positive and negative effects available, and generally affect both friendly and unfriendly units. Some examples of possible effects are immunity, silence, and increased damage. Strategic players can move or destroy Geo Symbols to give themselves an advantage.

There is so much to this game. There is truly an overabundance of job classes to choose from for players, as well as playable monster races to choose from. Disgaea is also rich with side content, though as one NPC reassuringly tells the player, the game actually can be completed with minimal knowledge and exploration. It is simply more interesting to explore things like the Item World, and the Dark Assembly.

Worst. Assassin. Ever.

Although the game is more than a few years old, being an early release on the Playstation 2, it has aged quite gracefully. The quality of the dialogue and voice acting still ranks very high. The graphics are of the slightly exaggerated anime style as opposed to a more realistic style, and this style has not changed considerably as we have moved into the current generation of consoles.

If anyone has not taken the time to explore this series, kindly remove thyself from beneath yonder rock, and give it a chance. As any gamer familiar with this or other NISA work can attest, a short review can really only scratch at the surface of what these games offer.

!Bienvenidos a Boletaria! Cuidado adelante....

No es como Lord of the Rings, God of War, Castlevania, Devil May Cry o Dynasty Warriors (Basura-.ed).
