And it is so beautiful!  And I’m so proud!  And I really have to thank all of the volunteers at the Accreditation & Uniform Centre for doing such a wonderful job at moving us all through quickly and efficiently.  They have it all laid out in a row.

When I arrived I checked in at the door of the PNE Forum (I was a little concerned at this point as I was not on the list) but the volunteer at the desk took my name and sent me on to the next room, where they checked my ID and their computer and luckily I was there!  At ID check they gave me a slip of paper and sent me on (just follow the red line) to the photography centre.  I had my photo taken (‘just like a passport photo’, really? I always smile, how is someone going to recognize me deadpan??) and then from there onto the printer.  We all lined up behind our designated printers and waited for our accreditation, which of course was promptly laminated and put onto a lanyard.  So cool to have my accreditation in hand (even if the photo is goofy!)!  Then off to uniforms (follow the yellow line this time).

There was a bit of a line for uniforms, conveniently right beside a small Vancouver 2010 merchandise shop (I didn’t buy anything at all!  So proud ).  Some of us chatted in line, so that was nice.  Then they checked my accreditation and gave me a sheet of paper and sent me around another corner (grey line this time) and I pretty much immediately went into the fitting room area.  Everyone must try on the uniform pieces to make sure you get a good fit!  Marianne helped me with mine, she was so sweet!  I just barely managed to not cry as I put on the different pieces!

Marianne marked down my sizes on the paper I had been given and then sent me along to the pickup room.  A volunteer there took my paper (smiled with glee that it was an ‘easy’ order as everything was the same size) and started filling my tote bag with my volunteer pants, two long-sleeve t-shirts, vest, jacket, toque and welcome gift (I was grinning by this point!).  From there I headed to the check out area, where they scan through all of the items to make sure that you have what you’re supposed to have.  The final check is on your way out the door, at the far side of the Forum, a very nice volunteer is sitting there wishing everyone “Bonsoir”.  If you answer en français he asks if you know enough to wear a “Bonjour” button during the Games to identify that you can speak French.  I sadly cannot speak enough French to be comfortable with this, but I will try to improve quickly (I have a lot of people who can help at the Olympic Superstore!).

I didn’t entirely pull the bag of goodies apart until I got home, but as I had a late shift it was pretty late indeed before I had a chance to peruse what they’d given us.  So, besides the uniform pieces we also received a “Team 2010 Pocket Guide” that has answers for most things that volunteers will need to know on the job.  In the goody bag there are all sorts of things!  I admit, I am most excited about the Cold-FX snowboard pin!  But there was also some Cold-FX!  Excel Gum!  A FarCoast travel mug (mmm… coffee!)!  And coupons for Petro-Canada, and the Bay including the Olympic Superstore!!  Very cool!  OK – so yes, I did a bit of self-portraiture last night, with my snazzy new uniform, so here are some photos (not quite as exciting as JawnBC’s video mind you! ).

Until 57 days to go…. Happy Holidays and Happy Vancouver 2010!

It’s been a strange week really. I seem to have spent the week being confronted with the fact I’m still a lot more ill than I thought I was.

On Wednesday I had an appointment with Dr B. He’s another GP at my local practice and as Dr N is on holiday for two weeks I had to make do with him. He’s okay, but a little brisk. Every time I’ve seen him he’s made me do a PHQ9 form to assess my levels of depression. It’s similar to a BDI I guess, but with fewer questions and less detail. My score was in the twenties (out of 27), putting me in the severely depressed category. I knew I was still depressed but I’d kinda expected it to have moved into the moderately severe category by now. I do feel better than I did back in February. The depression is less absolute, but I can’t deny that I still think of death and suicide every day, I’m still not sleeping and I still feel pretty tired and down.

For curiosity’s sake I did a BDI as well. I ended up doing it twice as I find it so difficult to decide between answers. My pessimistic score (choosing the worse option if I couldn’t decide) was well over 50. My optimistic score (choosing the better option) was about 45. 30+ is classed as severe depression so it’s a pretty similar result to the PHQ9. It’s a vast improvement on the 60+ (out of 63!) I was scoring in February. I racked up one of the highest scores ever seen at The Priory back then, which is pretty scary really. The improvement is not enough though. How can this be recovery if I’m still in the severely ill category?

I don’t know if I am really severely depressed though, even if my scores say I am. I have been depressed for so much of my life I’m not sure if my results are skewed. I expect even when I’m what I’d describe as well, I’d still be scoring a mild depression score at least.

I was talking about this with a medic friend last night. We were talking about the GPs in the village and I mentioned I’d seen Dr B. She asked me what he was like and I basically said he was okay, but he asks me to do the PHQ9 whenever I see him. She said that GPs are obliged to demonstrate they are giving “adequate monitoring” to depression patients and the PHQ9 counts towards this. It’s interesting as I don’t remember ever doing one with Dr N. I guess he prefers to give adequate monitoring with actually asking me how I am, rather than getting me to select ticky boxes.

I mentioned my scores and how I wasn’t sure how accurate they were. She suggested that sometimes the scores can be a little skewed by insight and they often don’t reflect how well someone is functioning, which seems fair enough I guess. She said I’m clearly functioning a lot better than my scores suggest, which I think is true, but I guess that comes with years of practice in hiding things. I function in autopilot, hiding the thoughts, but the thoughts are still there.

To add further doubts to my idea of recovery I got a letter from the ESA decision maker yesterday. They are finally processing my application under the youth rules and the decision maker has sent the sheet explaining how much I will receive. Looking at it, I’m being paid the amount pertaining to the Support Group. I presume this means they have my medical result and not only have I passed, but I am deemed too unwell to even contemplate work and thus have been placed in the Support Group. This is a big surprise. I had worried so much that I wouldn’t even pass the medical, let alone be placed in the Support Group. I haven’t received the letter confirming my medical result yet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is wrong, but it shouldn’t be. I will be interested to see what score I actually received. Another set of points telling me how ill I am.

I don’t know how I feel about being in the Support Group though. In a way it is positive. It means I don’t need to do the pointless Pathways to Work interviews and I also get a little more money, which of course is good. It means there is no pressure to try and get back to work before I am ready. I will not be bullied by the DWP to do so.

At the same time though I can’t help but feel disappointed. I feel like I’ve been written off. I am too ill and disabled to even consider working. That’s something I can’t handle and really don’t want to admit. I want to get back to work and I want that to be something achievable in the near future. It makes me feel like this is all pointless. I want to be recovering and this makes me wonder if I really am. I had felt I was making progress, but that progress is clearly not enough. This is all just fuelling the “fuck it, this isn’t worth it” thoughts. I don’t want this.

I’m a little worried too and I almost feel guilty. I wonder whether this is the right decision. I kinda feel like I have cheated the system because I didn’t expect to pass the medical. I know how notorious these medicals are. I know that hardly anyone passes, let alone gets placed in the Support Group. I wonder why I have got through when so many others haven’t? Am I really that bad? I know I can be in denial and I guess in a way these doubts show that, but I am still unsure. It just feels a little wrong.

I wonder if this process is designed to make you feel guilty? There is such a stigma against incapacity benefits, that you feel awful to be claiming them, yet if you are entitled to, it would be stupid not to. There is so much attention paid to people that cheat the system that genuine claimants worry they will be tarred with the same brush. I had no intention of cheating the system and I didn’t do anything to do so. If anything I down played how bad things were. There was no exaggeration, yet I feel like I have cheated. Surely this is wrong? Surely I should just be glad that the right decision has been made? Yet the doctors at Atos have such a bad reputation I even question a positive decision.

WOW!  WOW! WOW!  I’m excited!   Yes, I know I’m pretty much excited every day, but today is really great!  We are now only 100 days from the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games or 13 Mondays!!  And 128 days until the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games!!  WOW!  There is at least one new pin out today… And that’s what I’m going to start this post with, though it’s been a pretty great day!

La cible : les manœuvres qu’aurait tentées le fonds Pardus pour prendre le contrôle de la SSII. L’association voit encore dans l’indemnité de départ de Philippe Germond un abus de bien social.

L’AFP révèle qu’une association baptisée Les Arvernes, qui se présente comme un groupe de défense des intérêts industriels français (les Arvernes s’étaient déjà opposés à la direction de Safran et à Lakhsmi Mittal lors de la fermeture de l’aciérie de Gandrange), a déposé mercredi 3 décembre une plainte contre X, en raison de soupçons de corruption au sein d’Atos-Origin.

While some of the largest players such as IBM and Accenture have provided a service delivery platform or two (IBM for Sprint and India’s Bharti Airtel, Accenture for Turkcell), a strike force of small independent software vendors (ISVs) has been crafting and deploying SDPs for broadband operators. And some of IBM and Accenture’s fellow heavyweights not only have taken notice but have taken out their checkbooks to bring some of that upstart-developed goodness home for the holidays.

In early October, Convergys, formerly known as Cincinnati Bell Information Systems (CBIS) and a long-standing leader first in customer care & billing and more recently in (customer) “relationship management,” announced it is acquiring Ceon. As discussed earlier in this space, Ceon has been one of the capable competitors to Sigma Systems in the broadband service fulfillment market with its Ceon Product Control Center. Convergys is combining this tempting new fare with its Infinys platform and serving it up as Convergys Enterprise Product Management Solutions. The offer is designed to help service providers more effectively manage product lifecycles across all network domains, shortening time to market for new convergent offers and hiking quality while reducing the cost of managing a large product portfolio-or in its words, to “construct, manage and deploy a layered catalog that includes the full technical and commercial definition of products and services.” At least one service provider, ice.net, formerly known as Nordisk Mobiltelefon and still known that way if you go by its URL, has deployed the new system.

Earlier in 2008 another capable competitor to Sigma became another acquired competitor. After a string of other acquisitions, B/OSS kingpin Amdocs took its most important step toward becoming a broadband-ready provider by acquiring JacobsRimell. Integrating the service fulfillment mini-mite into its software suite means Amdocs, like Convergys, now has a CRM+SDP one-two punch for delivering and managing converged services.

Also in 2008 another Sigma nemesis, Axiom, was acquired by Comptel to position Comptel to capitalize on the converging IP service trend, and to leverage Axiom’s strong market presence in EMEA and APAC, spurred partly by the ISV’s partnerships with systems integrators such as Atos Origin and TietoEnator. At the time of the acquisition Axiom had 35 customers including BT, Telecom New Zealand and Singtel.

Which begs the question: When all around it are being snapped up by bigger fish, why does Sigma remain as the only ISV that matters in the broadband SDP space, almost resolutely so? (C-COR, which at one point spiked a blip on the radar, is now playing a post-acquisition supporting role inside broadband equipment provider Arris Interactive. Sigma itself took another competitor, Alopa, out of the market by acquiring its broadband software assets in 2006.) Maybe Sigma has a bad taste in its mouth from its last venture into life-as-the-acquired: In 2002 it was bought by broadband equipment manufacturer Liberate in that company’s attempt to emulate the hardware + software machinations being tried at that time by its colleagues in the telecom equipment sector including Lucent and Nortel. Then, when Liberate ran afoul of regulators and heads began to roll out of the executive suite, Sigma was “liberated” to resume life as an ISV. Or maybe there’s a lingering market perception that Sigma is something of a one-note regional player itself, in that all of its customers save one (Telus) are cable MSOs and the vast majority are located in North America.

I predict that as the ADP (acquisition delivery platform) continues to accelerate the consolidation of smaller firms with great technology into larger players we’ll soon be talking about a new corporate address for Sigma to call home. Does the word “soon” build the ultimate fudge factor into that statement? Absolutely. After all, it’s the holidays.

Atos Origin est une Société de Services Informatiques qui génère un chiffre d’affaire de 5 milliards d’euros avec plus de 50 000 salariés dans le monde.  Une de ses pépites, Atos Worldline, tient un rôle important auprès du GIE des cartes bleues.

Thierry Breton a été nommé à la tête du groupe pour accélérer la mise en œuvre du plan de transformation 3 Objectifs à 3 ans. Ce changement intervient après plus d’un an de turbulences au sein de la société. En avril 2008, deux fonds d’investissement Pardus et Centaurus (qui détenaient  conjointement 21,7 % du capital) avaient demandé un changement de stratégie, notamment une cession de la filiale Atos Worldline.
Des propositions refusées par Philippe Germond qui avait dû batailler jusqu’au 30 octobre, après un nouveau pacte d’actionnaires et l’annulation de l’Assemblée générale en mai, pour faire adopter son plan stratégique et apaiser ses relations avec les actionnaires.

La capitalisation boursière d’Atos Origin est très faible, moins de 1,2 milliards. Alors que vient faire un Arverne à la tête de cette société non CACienne ?
Tout le monde connaît sa proximité avec Didier Lombard, ainsi que son amitié pronfonde avec l’actionnaire Bernand Aupetit qui dirige le fond Centaurus.

Orange Business Services (OBS) est un concurrent d’Atos Origin, qui offre ses prestations auprès des entreprises, mais peine sur le marché de l’intégration et de la VoIP.
En outre OBS n’est pas armé pour attaquer de futurs marchés tels que les moyens de paiements mobiles.

Une acquisition d’Atos Origin par France Telecom aurait ici tout un sens. Sur un plan financier, cela permettrait d’acquérir du chiffre d’affaires à faible coût avec un caractère relatif pour les actionnaires de France Télécom. Le PER (rapport entre les bénéfices et la capitalisation) est de 6,5 pour Atos, contre 9,5 pour France Télécom.

Reste une question en suspens, quelle date ? 2009 ou 2010?

Clearly the Government chooses its contractors on the basis of the cheapest bid, without any regard for little things like competence. Many of the security and information breaches over the last couple of years have been by EDS. This time it is by Atos Origin.

A memory stick containing all the confidential pass codes to the tax websites was found in a pub car park. As a result the Government had to shut down access to driving licence applications, VAT returns, pension entitlements and child benefit.

The Prime Minister has now even admitted the government cannot promise the safety of personal data entrusted by the public. He has not changed his plans for ID cards for everyone, which security experts have said will be hacked almost as soon as they are issued. So the Prime Minister is saying that even though the data will be completely insecure and unreliable, and will be used illegally to the detriment of an incalculable number of citizens in terms of financial loss and identity theft on top of the usual invasion of privacy, the Government must have it to control terrorism and immigration.

For Erwan: French IT service provider Atos Origin has rejected a €1.6B takeover approach by Candover for its Atos Worldwide unit, which specialises in electronic payment systems.

Since the offered was received, Centaurus Capital has halved its stake in Atos and now controls a combined 16.71% interest along with fellow hedge fund Pardus. Meanwhile PAI Partners has upped its stake to 22.61% and has become the company’s largest individual shareholder. PAI was the founding shareholder of Atos when the company was created through the merger of Axime and Sligos, with the investor holding 100% of the company until its listing. The private equity firm also oversaw Atos’ merger with Origin in October 2000.

International IT provider Atos Origin has won a new contract with the UK Gambling Commission to implement systems that support the Commission’s licensing and compliance work for arcades, betting shops, bingo halls, casinos, gaming machine suppliers and lotteries, as well as British-based gambling websites.

The company will implement Siebel 8.0 to provide the Commission with a single, up-to-date view of each operator for both office-based and mobile staff, it announced this week.

This new CRM platform will provide Commission staff with the necessary regulatory information and intelligence at the right time and in the right place, says Bill Butler, Director of Corporate Services at the Commission.

“Following a competitive process, we selected Atos Origin because it demonstrated that it understands our needs and has the capability and experience to deliver,” he said.

Anne Ware, vice president for Public Sector operations at Atos Origin, commented: “Having the correct information to hand at the right time is essential for all organizations. For the Gambling Commission, this new solution will help them to keep gambling fair and safe for all by making it easier to ensure that operators are fulfilling their requirements.”

The Gambling Commission is the independent regulator of all commercial gambling in Great Britain. It is an independent, non-departmental public sector body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Atos Origin has a long-standing relationship with DCMS, the UK Government Department responsible for amongst other things, Government policy on the arts, sport, the National Lottery and the 2012 Olympic Games & Paralympic Games. Moving down the list of TOP Olympics marketing efforts, we have Atos Origin.

Atos Origin manages and integrates the contributions of all technology partners and suppliers to deliver seamless and secure technology operations and services that provide instant communications to athletes, spectators, organizers, officials, media, television viewers and Internet users worldwide. The company became a Worldwide Olympic Partner when it joined the TOP Programme as SchlumbergerSema in 2001.

So as an IT service provider, their marketing efforts are really pretty limited.

1) It’s mostly business to business deals and their main point of joining the games was to showcase how they can work with potential partners.

I quote from this article what the Olympics can do for a B2B marketing:

“The Games are very useful in raising the broader awareness of our firm through the recognition power of the Olympic rings. You are also more credible as a business if you are associated with the Olympic rings.

“The visibility of the rings has also been used internally; it is very reassuring for our staff to know the firm is associated with the Games.”

2) They’ve also helped the IOC achieve its aim of zero carbon emission games this Summer to make it “the green games”

I’m sure Jacky Tai would have more to say, I wonder if more efforts could be done for a B2B marketing. As I work for Atos Origin, who does most of the IT of the Olympic Games, there is a lot of buzz going on internally about the Games. One of my colleagues went there as a volunteer (Atos Origin lets a certain number of volunteers come to the games to help out and experience the event) and he is doing a good job of keeping his blog up to date. The details are as under:

1. Eligibility:

BSC (IT)/ BE/ MCA/ MSc/ BCA/ MBA(IT/Systems) with /  without IT experience with excellent communication skills.

2. Selection Procedure:
i. Aptitude Test
ii. HR interview/s.
iiii. On clearance of Aptitude and HR interview/s, successful candidates shall get an offer letter from Triumph Systems & Solutions Pvt Ltd.

3.  Salary: The salary payable shall be as follows:

Stipend from Month 4 upto Month 6  Rs. 5000/- per month for on-the-job training
Salary from Month 7 upto Month 9  Rs. 10050/- per month
Month 10th onwards Rs. 15000/- to Rs 25000/- per month depending on the caliber and performance of each individual.

4. Training:

The candidates appointed on joining shall undergo rigorous training for 3 months in Java Technolgy and Finishing Skills with additional 1 month on Projects and subsequently deployed on challenging Projects either at TriumphSys or directly with reputed Organizations.

5. Commitment:

The selected candidates will have to pay fees of Rs. 70,000/- for the training. (Non Refundable)

6. Clients: Triumph has been serving leading software organizations for their requirements in Training, Resourcing and Consulting.
