Wilson Rising Stars Mladenovic and Berta End Year #1 on ITF Junior Circuit

Wilson owned the top spots on the ATP and WTA Tour in 2009 and also claimed the top spots on the ITF Junior Circuit as Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Berta ended the year #1. Just as Wilson had Roger Federer and Serena Williams as a young upcoming players, Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Berta are the rising stars of today’s game.

Kristina Mladenovic played with her Wilson [K]Tour racket to have a great 2009, as she took the French Open Girls’ Singles title, Roehampton Girls Singles title, reached both the Girl’s Singles and Doubles finals at  Wimbledon and most recently, reached the Girls Singles final of the prestigious Orange Bowl International Championships, which solidified her year end #1 ranking on the ITF Junior Circuit. 16 year old Mladenovic also had success at the pro level, as she reached the semifinals of the $100,000 ITF Pro Circuit Cagnes-Sur-Mer Challenger and finished the year ranked 202 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

With his [K] Six.One 95 racket, Daniel Berta ended the year at the top boy on the ITF Junior Circuit. Berta won the 2009 French Open Boys’ Singles title as an unseeded player, defeated 11th seed Mina 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 for his first ever junior Grand Slam title and became the first Swede to win the boys’ title since Carlsson in 1984.

As Berta and Mladenovic continue to reach new levels of their game, they will both be equipped with new BLX rackets and will debut them at the 2010 Australian Open. Wilson takes pride in helping players from the developmental stages through Grand Slam victory. We look forward to watching the impending success of these rising stars.

Hello to all fellow Wilson racquet sports lovers !! My name is Lester Cook and I am a touring tennis professional from Los Angeles, CA.

Wilson has asked me to blog about my adventures and travels this year and I am very excited to share my stories with you. I am 25 years old and currently ranked 225 ATP in singles and 185 ATP in doubles. I have just returned from a trip to Atlanta, GA where I was invited by the USTA to particpate in an Australian Open Wild Card playoff. They invited 8 of the top American Pro’s to play in a mini tournament where the winner would get a Wild Card into the main draw of the Australian Open (every year the USA and Australia trade a WC into eachother’s Grand Slam)

Unfortunately, I was outed in the first round against a fellow Wilson player Michael McClune. It was a last minute invitation and I did not feel like I had enough time to train and be ready for the tournament. But the good news is that I am still in the qualifying of the Australian Open and that is where I will be starting my year.
In the meantime, I have started my off season training at the USTA national training center in Carson, CA. There is always good coaches, trainers and good players around for me to get my necessary playing time in. I am currently writing this blog in a state of fear that my legs will begin to cramp again, thanks Rodney!! But this is the type of training necessary if I am going to be ready for the hot conditions down in Australia and not to mention the rest of the year.

Tomorrow, I will be training with the guy who knocked me out of the Wild Card tournament in Atlanta, Michael McClune. I guess I should run him around for some payback. Wish me luck.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams are #1

She won her 10th and 11th Grand Slam singles titles, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Serena is the only woman to win two Grand Slam crowns this season and also won 3 Grand Slam doubles titles with Venus at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

ATP World Tour Finals – London,

22-29 November 2009

Defending champion Novak Djokovic can be considered the man to beat at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after concluding the regular ATP World Tour season with consecutive titles, but the 22-year-old Serbian downplayed his status as the ‘favourite’ during the media round tables Friday in London.

“It’s not for me to say if I’m favourite or not, considering the players who are participating in this tournament,” he said. “I don’t think any of us are big favourites because it’s the best eight players in the world, it’s very unpredictable. I think it’s going to be a very interesting tournament because it’s held for the first time in London, it’s in a new venue which no one has experienced before.”

Oh, de ironie. Voor een groot deel van het jaar is het vrouwentennis belachelijk gemaakt, vanwege het feit dat Dinara Safina de nummer één van de wereld was, zonder dat ze een Grand Slam-titel had gewonnen. Dat terwijl nummer twee Serena de Australian Open en Wimbledon in haar zak had zitten. Maar wat leert de huidige ranglijst bij de mannen ons?

Arme Dinara. Waar ze ook kwam in de zomer, steeds weer werd ze lastig gevallen door journalisten met die ene vraag. “Voel je je wel de echte nummer één?” Safina werd er gek van (daar is niet veel voor nodig voor een familielid van Marat…) en ging onderdoor aan de druk. Op Roland Garros gebeurde het al, toen Safina net de nummer één-positie in handen had. Ze domineerde twee weken lang in Parijs, tot ze in de finale compleet verstijfde tegen landgenote Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Safina beleefde weinig plezier aan haar tijd als nummer 1

Toen kwam Wimbledon, waar Safina in de halve eindstrijd werd vernietigd door Venus Williams. Safina deed de geloofwaardigheid van haar topklassering weinig goeds, door slechts één game te pakken tegen de oudste Williams. Ze werd uitgelachen vanwege haar karrevracht aan dubbele fouten.

En Serena Williams zat ondertussen maar te lachen. “Tja, we weten allemaal wel wie écht de beste is”, sprak ze tijdens een persconferentie.

Maar alsof dat alles nog niet genoeg vernedering was voor de arme Russin, verloor Safina op de US Open al in de derde ronde van de laagvlieger Petra Kvitova.

Om haar seizoen echt in stijl af te sluiten, vloog Safina er in haar laatste twee reguliere toernooien nog eens uit tegen de nummers 132 en 226 van de wereld. Tijdens de WTA Championships gaf ze er al na twee games de brui aan tegen Jelena Jankovic met een rugblessure.

Maar pfoe! Gelukkig won Serena Williams ook het eindejaarskampioenschap in Doha en nam ze daarmee op de valreep toch nog de nummer één plek over van Safina. De vrouwentour was gered.

Tja en dan staat daar tegenover het florerende mannencircuit, waar Rafael Nadal en Roger Federer al jarenlang de dienst uitmaken aan de top van de wereldranglijst, en waar niemand de laatste vijf jaar ook maar heeft getwijfeld aan de credibiliteit van de toppositie. Federer was van 2004 tot en met 2007 de onbetwiste nummer één, net als Nadal dat in 2008 was en Federer opnieuw in 2009.

Nadal zou zomaar de nummer 1 van 2009 kunnen worden

Ho eens even. Wat valt ons op wanneer we de ranking van deze week erbij pakken? De voorsprong van Federer op zijn naaste belager Nadal is minder dan 1.000 punten, voorafgaand aan de ATP World Tour Finals in Londen van volgende week. De Zwitser heeft daarbij nog 200 punten te verdedigen van zijn optreden bij het eindejaarskampioenschap in Shanghai van vorig seizoen, tegenover de lege 0 van Nadal.

De winnaar in Londen kan tot 1.500 punten voor de wereldranglijst verdienen (wanneer hij ongeslagen het toernooi wint). Elke overwinning in de groepsfase is goed voor 200 punten.

Federer maakte onlangs een slordige indruk in de finale van zijn thuistoernooi in Basel, waar hij verloor van Novak Djokovic, terwijl de vijftienvoudig Grand Slam-kampioen afgelopen week in Parijs al na één duel zijn koffers kon pakken.

Nadal profiteerde van de verrassende overwinning van Julien Benneteau op zijn rivaal door de halve finale te halen. De Spanjaard kende een stroef begin van de week (Nadal overleefde vijf matchpoints tegen Nicolas Almagro in de openingsronde en zag Tommy Robredo serveren voor de wedstrijd in zijn tweede partij) maar liet in zijn kwartfinaleduel tegen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga voor het eerst sinds het voorjaar weer wat van zijn beste tennis zien.

Een ontketende Novak Djokovic weerhield Nadal van een finaleplaats, maar wanneer hij zijn stijgende lijn in vorm doortrekt naar de O2-Arena, is er geen enkele reden waarom Nadal niet kan strijden voor de titel in Londen, en daarmee de nummer één-positie van Federer aan kan vallen.

Ziet u het al voor zich? Roger Federer die in het jaar waarin hij zijn career Grand Slam bereikt met het winnen van Roland Garros, en het Grand Slam-record van Pete Sampras breekt op Wimbledon, alsmede de US Open en Australian Open finales haalt, het seizoen afsluit als nummer twee van de wereld? En dat zelfs terwijl Nadal maandenlang geblesseerd is geweest en Wimbledon heeft moeten missen. Wat zouden Dinara en Serena lachen.

Desde la consagración de Juan Martín del Potro (N°5 del ranking mundial) en el US Open, donde venció en una inolvidable final al suizo Roger Federer (N°1), los tenistas argentinos no han podido obtener buenos resultados en el circuito ATP. El final de una temporada larga que empezó en los primero días de enero y el desarrollo de certámenes indoor, los cuales no son la especialidad de nuestros representantes, acentúan aún más esta realidad.

El tenista tandilense se vio imposibilitado de aprovechar el golpe anímico que significa ganar un Grand Slam (más considerando las circunstancias) y se vio inmerso en diferentes problemas físicos que lo arrastraron a abandonar de manera temprana de los torneos en los que se presentó o desistir antes de comienzo de algún certamen, como es el caso de este semana en el ATP 500 de Basilea.

La actuación de los otros compatriotas tampoco es para destacar. La excepción a esta situación es el marplatense Horacio Zeballos, quien arribó a la final del ATP 250 de San Petersburgo el pasado fin de semana.

Mayer batalló pero no pudo con Murray

Para graficar el bajo nivel que viene demostrando la legión argentina en las últimas semanas, vale recordar que Juan Mónaco (N°30) perdió en el día de hoy ante el ruso Nikolay Davydenko (N°7) por 6-3 y 7-5 y fue eliminado en la segunda rueda del ATP 500 de Valencia, mientras que Leonardo Mayer (N°64) también se despidió al caer ante el británico Andy Murray (N°4) por 6-4, 3-6 y 6-3. Con estas dos caídas, el tenis argentino se quedo sin representación en los torneos que se disputan durante la presente semana.   

La carrera hacia el ATP World Final de Londres

Con la victoria obtenida ante Leonardo Mayer, el ruso Nikolay Davydenko está cada vez más cerca de obtener la clasificación al ATP World Finals (ex Masters).

Con el objetivo de lograr un pasaporte a Londres, existen varios jugadores para ocupar las dos plazas vacantes que quedan: el español Fernando Verdasco, el chileno Fernando González y el sueco Robin Soderling, son los que más chances tiene de obtener un lugar en la cita que reune a los ocho mejores jugadores de la temporada.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro y Roddick ya se aseguraron un lugar en Londres.

El marplatense Horacio Zeballos (54° del ranking mundial) cayó ante el ucraniano Sergiy Stakhovsky (93°) por 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(7) en la final del torneo ATP 250 de San Petersburgo.

La caída se produce en la primera final que disputa el tenista zurdo. Sin embargo, con este buen rendimiento de la pasada semana, Zeballos escaló 12 posiciones en el ranking mundial para ubicarse en el puesto 42°.

This was not the main ingredient of the bomb he had just exploded in the  sports news last week.  It was primarily the revelation that he used a banned drug crystal meth during 1997.  Tennis world is shocked from the interview by People Magazine especially those idolizing one of the legends of the tennis world.  It was the admittance of the sport’s mortal sin  in his upcoming autobiograhy that a failed drug test was thrown out after he lied by saying he “unwittingly” took the substance.  The revelation drew worldwide attention and reaction from tennis stars like Martina Navratilova and the current top players in the ATP tour Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who both said this might hurt the sport’s credibility and doubts  for any victory might have tainted with enhanced substance.  Andy Roddick  said Andre will still be his idol no matter scandal he get involved as through the active years, Andre was such a nice person to him.

What caught my attention was the revelation he wore hairpiece during those years to avoid derision, criticism and mockery and as a  high profile sports celebrity he became self conscious when he started getting bald.  Hair is the crown of one’s body so it can affect one’s look and proper grooming contributes a lot so wigs and toupees are here to provide.  In recent years,  hair transplant becomes a popular alternative especially if one has the money to spend for the high cost of surgery and maintenance.

Andre revealed it was Brooke Shields, his stranged wife who advised him to  transformed into the real him, the bald Andre Agassi who I used to know when I started gaining interest to the sport at the onset of the new millenium.  Andre became my idol and the first racket I bought was Head whom he was endorsing then.  I still have it and would keep for good as part of a memorabilia.  During my playing years in Nigeria, many called me Agassi as  I was sporting the same skinned head look .

It was in the hair issue I was stunned from the sensational news about Andre Agassi that graced yahoo sports headlines as it is in this particular thing I could relate myself and experience to Agassi but as a fanboy of  the ever popular 8 times Grand Slams Winner and one of the elite champions who won all the majors, the revelation will not change my perception of Andre and possibly if I have chance, I will be the first to buy his book ” Open“.

So here we are entering the last week of October.

The US Open was finished six weeks ago, the season ending ATP Tour event is still a month away and the Davis Cup final takes place a fortnight later.

Welcome to tennis, the sport of which there is no off-season.

Unlike golf, which got its act together and mandated a schedule in which the meaningful tournaments take place over nine months, the tennis season drags on and on. The Davis Cup final finishes on 6 December, about four weeks before the Hopman Cup and the Brisbane International start the new season.

The problem for tennis is that the longstanding tournaments continue to be played, while new markets need to catered for. February, once a quiet month in the wake of the Australian Open, now has a vibrant South American swing and the growing number of Argentinian, Brazilian and Chilean players all want to take part.

Understandably wanting to cash in on China, tennis has now scheduled big tournaments towards the end of the year in both Beijing and Shanghai, but perhaps as a sign of the growing tennis fatigue, many players opted to miss the recent Shanghai event, even though it held Masters’ status. Little wonder that Nikolay Davydenko was the champion.

Decent off-seasons are important in any sport. It is not just the players who need the break, but the surrounding industry – coaches, trainers, umpires and support staff as well as fans – who also need significant down time.

But four weeks at the end of the year doesn’t cut it, because within a few days, the players need to start training again in preparation for the Australian summer – a gruelling campaign for those coming out of the European and North American winter.

If The Toy Department was running tennis, the sport would follow the lead of golf and finish all its significant events, including the ATP and WTA finals and the conclusions to the Davis and Fed cups by the end of October, leaving two clear months for the players to rest and recuperate. If, like the golfers, they want to continue lining their pockets for the rest of the year by playing exhibitions and non-sanctioned events, that’s fine with us.

But the results won’t count, so we won’t have to pretend it matters.

La presencia de argentinos en el torneo ATP 250 de Estocolmo llegó a su fin en el día de hoy, Las derrotas del correntino Leonardo Mayer frente al brasileño Thomaz Bellucci por 7-5, 3-6 y 6-3, y la caída de Juan Mónaco ante el local Joachim Johansson por un doble 6-4, ambos en segunda ronda, dejó al certamen sin representantes nacionales.

En Rusia, los compatriotas que decidieron probar suerte en el ATP 250 de Moscú, no tuvieron mejores resultados. Horacio Zeballos y Martín Vassallo Argüello cayeron en su presentación de primera ronda antes los locales Mikhail Youzhney y Andrey Golulev, respectivamente.

Por otra parte, Juan Martín del Potro retornará al circuito el 2 de noviembre próximo en el ATP 500 de Basilea. De esta manera, descartó su presencia en el torneo de Viena que se disputará a partir de la semana entrante, con el objetivo de tener una semana más de descanso y recuperarse de la molestia que lo aqueja en su muñeca derecha, dificultad que lo obligó a abandonar en el Masters 1000 de Shanghai.

El gran objetivo, como campeón de US Open que es Del Potro, es coronarse en la gran cita de Londres: el ATP Tour World Finals, torneo que reunirá a los ochos mejores jugadores del ranking mundial (junto a Del Potro, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray y Roddick ya están clasificados) y que comienza el 22 de noviembre.

Por su parte, David Nalbandian reaparecerá en el circuito profesional, después de once meses de inactividad como consecuencia de una operación de cadera. Según un comunicado del director del torneo de Auckland, Richard Palmer, el cordobés participará de este certamen ATP 250. Su último encuentro fue el 3 mayo de este año, cuando cayó por un doble 6-2 ante el chileno Paul Capdeville en Estoril.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Victorious in Tokyo

ATP World Tour No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga used his Wilson [K]obra Tour racket as he clinched his third ATP World Tour title of the season in Tokyo. The dynamic Jo-Wilfried powered his way to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Youzhny in the final of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships.

Since finishing runner-up to at the 2008 Australian Open, Tsonga has reached five ATP World Tour finals and won all five titles.

“Jo-Wilfried is a true force on the ATP Tour,” says Massimo Calvelli, Wilson Tour Director. “Not only is Jo-Wilfried a great player, but his pure joy for the game is infectious and he is a great ambassador for tennis.”

With his victory in Tokyo, Tsonga received 500 South African Airways 2009 ATP Ranking points to bring him closer to earning one of the three remaining singles spots at ATP World Tour Championships, to be held at the O2 in London, November 22-29.

“I am so happy to win another title and this puts me closer to London,” said Tsonga. “I have so much confidence now going into Shanghai and all the indoor events. It’s a great time of the year for me.”

Wilson players Roger Federer and Serena Williams sit atop the professional tennis ranks.

Roger Federer is #1 on the ATP World Tour and continues to be nothing less than extraordinary.  Earlier this year, Roger made his mark on tennis history as he used his Wilson [K]Six-One Tour racket to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon to lift his major title count to a record 15 Grand Slam titles.

“This year has been fantastic for me and I look forward to finishing the year on a successful note,” said Roger Federer, the greatest player of all time. Serena Williams regained her world #1 WTA Tour ranking after using her [K]Blade Team racket to reach the Round of 16 at the China Open last week.

Williams now has the chance to add to her career total of 72 weeks at number one. “Obviously I’m happy to be there because I’ve worked so hard this year to get there. I think I’ve earned it,” Williams said.

It has been a great year for Serena as she took the Australian Open and Wimbledon singles titles. She has also had success on the doubles court with sister Venus as they took 3 of the 4 Grand Slam Women’s Doubles titles in 2009.

“Wilson’s tennis history is unparalleled,” says Wilson Tour Director Massimo Calvelli. “Roger and Serena are a tremendous part of the Wilson tennis heritage and we are extremely proud to have them on the Wilson team.”
