When a new virus hits the Internet there is little that an anti-virus software can do to stop the malware on the very day. But now, British engineers have come up with an answer to the problem.

Engineers Simon Wiseman and Richard Oak from defence technology company Qinetiq, Worcestershire, have found a way to stop computer viruses in their tracks by intercepting every file that could possibly hide a virus and adding a string of computer code to it that will disable any virus it contains.

Their technique mainly targets emailed attachments and adds the extra code to them as they pass through a mail server.

A key feature of the scheme, which they are patenting, is that no knowledge of the virus itself is needed, so it can deal with new, unrecognised “zero day” viruses as well as older ones, journal New Scientist reported.

Many mailservers already block attachments that will run as executable programs – such as PC files with a .exe suffix – in case they are viruses.

But virus writers have tricks up their sleeve to get round this. For example, they can disguise files as an innocent Microsoft Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file to fool unsuspecting users into converting them into an “executable” program file that will run on their computer.

Qinetiq aims to prevent this by inserting a line of machine code – the raw code that microprocessor chips understand – into the header area of incoming files.

Once the customer’s needs are determined, it’s time for Fred Schultz, owner of Landsite Development

Once the customer’s needs are determined, it’s time for Fred Schultz, owner of Landsite Development in Spokane, Wash., and his crew to get to work creating their customers’ distinct landscapes. To complete a job on time, on budget and to the customer’s satisfaction, Schultz knows that having a trained, experienced crew with access to the right tools to get the job done really pays off.

Having the right equipment in his fleet means teaming up with his Terex distributor, FMI Sales in Spokane, Wash. “Because Fred and his crew do everything from general landscaping work to snow removal,” says Dave Kopp, sales manager with FMI Sales, “they need equipment that offers them the versatility to handle a multitude of tasks.”

Schultz has been a customer of FMI Sales since 2003, purchasing an ASV RC-30 and a RC-60 compact track loader, as well as a host of attachments including a Harley rake, trenchers, augers, a snow plow and snow blowers. “We considered several factors,” says Kopp, “such as the type of environments and ground conditions the crew works in, before recommending the ASV line of compact track loaders, attachments, undercarriages and traction solutions to best suit Fred’s needs.”

In January 2008, Terex Corp. acquired ASV Inc. and has since merged the compact equipment legend’s products under the Terex® brand. The models Schultz owns are now the Terex® PT-30 and PT-60 compact track loaders.

According to Kopp, Terex® compact track loaders are hard to beat for grading work, as well as for working on and around existing landscapes, because of their low ground pressure. These loaders are also extremely stable on steep or uneven ground and have excellent traction in muddy, snowy and icy conditions. The narrow profile of the machines also allows Schultz and his crew to gain access to tight, space-restricted job sites, like fenced-in backyards.

“Using compact track loaders has totally revolutionized our business,” says Schultz. “We are able to bid on larger projects, and we’re able to work in all weather and ground conditions. We can keep up to five full-time employees busy year round with all the work we are able to do.”

To keep his equipment fleet up and running, Schultz invests the time and money needed to conduct all of the regularly scheduled maintenance tasks, as well as to keep up-to-date on the warranty work. He also makes sure that certified mechanics are involved with his equipment maintenance. “Keeping our equipment well-maintained is the key to our productivity,” says Schultz.

A strong relationship with Kopp and FMI Sales also plays a big role in keeping Schultz’s equipment fleet in tip-top shape. “As an equipment dealer, we need to quickly access the necessary parts and service our customers need to keep their equipment operating with little or no downtime. If downtime is necessary, we make sure we have equipment on hand for our customers to rent so they can keep working. We make their needs our first priority!”

According to Kopp, FMI Sales carries a full line of Terex® compact equipment, including compact track loaders, excavators, wheel loaders and tractor loader backhoes, to meet customers’ changing needs. Many customers, including Schultz, often need to rent additional equipment to supplement their fleets. “If I don’t own it, I rent it,” says Schultz.

The other reason for my absence has been all the grief I have had from Snow Leopard for the past few

The other reason for my absence has been all the grief I have had from Snow Leopard for the past few weeks.

I currently have a Macbook in rehab and for my iMac I have had to set up a new administrator to resolve a string of irritations.

My conclusion…do not upgrade to a new itteration of an OS until some other monkey has gone through the teething pains. For £20 odd quid I feel like taking Apple to court to claim back my lost time!!

The major problems have revolved around attachments, any attachment really , PDF, .doc, .jpeg, Snow Leopard is not precious. And in my line of work attachments are important.

Safari crashes the most, Word for Mac regularly and yousendit does it frequently.

So I have binned Safari for now…being pretty is one thing, being able to hold a conversation is far more important.

As you know I have given up on Mail as it is not built for power.

The bottom line is I have had to go through the irritation of setting up a new administrator account and all the pain of resetting my settings and permissions. Looking at things in glass half full mode though that has been an interesting learning curve.

With Windows 7 starting to catch up to Mac OS Apple needs to really pick up its game.

Why does it seem harder than usual this time? What’s so different this time? I really can

Why does it seem harder than usual this time? What’s so different this time? I really can’t put into words how I’m feeling right now.

I have about 37 more days to prep myself, to pack up and then say “goodbye”. Why does 37 days seem so short now? Especially when there have been days which I absolutely abhor work and the people here, days when I wished I could just vanish from this place forever, days when I hate the people here so much.

This is very weird. I’ve NEVER had to experience anything like this in my working life thus far; usually I’d be more happy to leave than anything else. It was like that for Hangten, it was like that for M.A.C, Vegas, Acepro and Art Tree. Why the sudden emotional attachment for this place now?

I guess the people here (good ones and bad ones alike) grew on me, the place grew on me, the inside jokes, code languages, laughters, tears and even tension all grew on me, in one way or another.

I am very attached to a couple of colleagues, I am very attached to my Boss. I can’t thank Mr. Mok enough for all the support and understanding he’s given me.

Truth be told, I’ve never met a superior like him before. Shan’t go into details about the kind things he’s done for me and how much support he’s given me for the past one and a half years. Other than the employer-employee relationship between us, we are also friends.

Leaving this place feels like leaving home, feels very shitty. I’m rather apprehensive and skeptical of the future – I’m in fact, scared. Could all these be happening because I am older now? I don’t know.

Don’t ask me where have my guts went to, I have no idea either. I’m so afraid I may meet people worse than the ones here, I’m so afraid my future Boss is gonna be a b*stard, I’m so afraid that I won’t be able to get used to the new environment.

I know that leaving for the next job is perhaps all for the better, if I think of it in the practical way, that is – considering the fact that the other side has made their stand very clear about job progression plans for their employees. But then again, you can never be too sure (or unsure).

What if I won’t be happy at the new place? What if 3 months down the road I realise that I’ve made the wrong choice? What if I screw up my own life because of this very decision? So many what-ifs, it’s fucked up.

I can’t take back my words or that letter now, because if I do, no one in this place is ever gonna take me seriously again. They’d probably think I’m either 1) nuts or 2) immature.

They won’t understand how this emotional attachment thing works and how much I treasure the good people I meet; so much so that I may just be willing to eat humble pie and take it all back. However, since I most likely won’t be able to seek any shared sentiments from anyone, I’d better not be stupid and harbour any second thoughts.

You know what? Right now, I think either way it’s gonna be a stupid decision. I shouldn’t stay plainly because of my emotional attachment with some of the folks here, I shouldn’t not stay because I am too proud to take back a letter and a few sentences. I shouldn’t leave for more dimes and nickels, I shouldn’t not leave for more dimes and nickels.

Either way, I’m fucked. For now at least.

A lot of us are already well familiar with the frustrations of spam: unsolicited e-mail advertisemen

A lot of us are already well familiar with the frustrations of spam: unsolicited e-mail advertisements. In recent years, unwanted emails have evolved in an attempt to avoid increasingly specialized filters and wary consumers. We've put together a list of red flags to help you quickly identify e-mails that may be harmful to your computer and your bank account.

Suspicious attachments

Attaching files to an email is a quick and simple way to share files with your friends and family. The unfortunate downside is that unscrupulous scammers can attach files like viruses and trojan horses in the hopes that an unwary recipient might download the file and infect their computer. Whenever you see an email with an attachment that you were not expecting, be cautious about downloading the attachment or even opening the email.

Links that don't make sense

In an email that claims to be from Yahoo, a link to a specific page on Yahoo's site appears. So why does the text of the link not begin with “http://yahoo.com”? Because it is a scam. Many scam artists attempt to gain account information or even credit card numbers by pretending to be respectable websites looking for information about your account. These emails will typically have a link to a page where you can reset your password, confirm your credit card information, or log in to access some special new feature. To spot these bad links, you need to look at the url: the address of the page that is being linked to. All urls begin with “http://” or “htpps://” and from there vary from website to website. If the url isn't visible in the text of the link, you can hover your mouse over the link and the url will be displayed in the lower left corner of your web browser.

Notices about accounts you don't have

Malicious emails that mask themselves as being from major websites are counting on their recipients actually having accounts with that website in the first place. If you get an email about your facebook account when you never even signed up with facebook, chances are very good that this is a phishing or virus email.

Password reset requests you didn't send

One of the most common email scams currently in circulation is the fake password reset. These emails claim that you recently requested a new password, and direct you to a webpage where you can enter your “old” account name and password. You may be able to pick out these emails by the link urls or because you don't have the account that you would ly be resetting a password for in the first place. Even if you don't see anything wrong with the link or the account information, never respond to a password reset email that you did not specifically ask for.

Sender addresses that don't add up

An email from YouTube.com will be sent from an account that ends with @youtube.com. If “joey5683426$$@ytmail.com” is sending you vital updates about your YouTube account, it's a safe bet this is also a malicious email. If your email system hides sender information, you can change your settings to show full headers or usually click a link right in the email to show all of the sender information.

Money transfer plots

Typically claiming to be from Nigeria, these emails claim that there is some obscene amount of money sitting in an account somewhere that the sender wants transfered to the US before something horrible happens to it. It's not unusual for these emails to be completely in upper case and poor English, although there are exceptions. These emails are phishing attempts, trying to get your bank account information so that the sender can access your funds. No matter the pretense for the email, you should never share bank account information with anyone you don't know. Recent varieties of these emails claim to be from “a member of your church.”

Bizarre emails from contacts

The most dangerous and hard to pick out malicious emails are the ones that come from your friends and other contacts. Typically if you receive a suspicious email from a friend or family member, it is either because their machine has been infected or because their email account has been compromised. If you see an email from one of your contacts that contains strange characters in the subject, has attachments that you weren't not expecting, links to a file sharing site, or otherwise looks unlike the emails you're used to from that person, take the time to contact them before clicking on any links or downloading any attachments.

Emails from yourself (that you didn't send)

These kinds of emails can be unsettling when you find them. If you find an email from your own account sitting in your inbox that you know you didn't send (and you haven't given anyone else access to your account) immediately change your password and security question for your account. Next, check out your “sent mail” folder to see if any other emails went out that you were unaware of. Let everyone who received one of these suspicious emails know that you did not send the emails, that they should not read them or click any links or attachments and that you suspect your account was compromised. You can also let your email provider know about your concerns. If this problem comes back, your computer may be infected and need virus cleanup service.

As users and spam filters become more aware of these malicious emails, scammers will develop new ploys to get at your computer, bank account, and other information. The best weapon against these attacks is a healthy dose of skepticism, though even cautious users can fall victim to scams and viruses.
Landscape contractors are always looking for tools to help them do their jobs more efficiently, beca

Landscape contractors are always looking for tools to help them do their jobs more efficiently, because speed and ease can translate into greater profitability. Michael Otte, owner of Whitewater Gardens in St. Charles, Minn., has learned that by carefully selecting the attachments he purchases, he is able to maximize his profits — the attachments he buys pay for themselves. “With the right attachments, I find ways to use my loader every day, handling all sorts of tasks, no matter if I’m constructing ponds, waterfalls or surrounding landscapes.”

According to Otte, because of the variety of attachments available, his compact utility loader can be used to haul and place boulders, gravel and rocks; carry tools and equipment to and from the jobsite; dig the pond; install waterfalls; put together the surrounding landscape; and even clean up afterwards.

On many projects, Otte’s compact utility loader is used in every step of the building process. With a bucket attachment, Otte digs out the pond basin and hauls boulders and other materials to the site. In fact, shuttling materials is one of the loader’s main functions. With the loader, he can move rocks up to 1,000 pounds around the site with relative ease. He uses a multi-purpose tool with swivels and straps to then carefully set larger boulders in place. This attachment is invaluable, says Otte, because it is very important to avoid damaging the fragile rubber membrane that lines the water gardens while placing the boulders. Also, he makes use of forks to set boulders higher up in his waterfall designs. Otte also uses his loader with one of his three bucket attachments to construct berms behind the waterfalls, as well as to backfill and smooth out the terrain during the clean up phase.

And with a trencher attachment, he could lay the plumbing in his pond creations; he could use the backhoe attachment for excavation and backfill work; and a vibratory plow attachment would make short work of any irrigation project.

Fred Schultz, owner of Landsite Development based in Spokane, Wash., says that versatility and job diversification has become the main goal of many landscaping contractors looking to keep their businesses afloat. “We do everything from assisting do-it-yourselfers to handling an entire landscaping project from start to finish,” says Schultz. “A property’s value can increase up to 14 percent with the right landscaping.”

To complete a job on time, on budget and to the customer’s satisfaction, Schultz knows that having access to the right tools to get the job done really pays off. Schultz runs an ASV RC-30 and a RC-60 compact track loader*, as well as a host of attachments including a Harley rake, trenchers, augers, a snow plow and snow blowers. “Using compact track loaders with different attachments has totally revolutionized our business,” says Schultz. “We are able to bid on larger projects, and we’re able to work in all weather and ground conditions. We can keep up to five full-time employees busy year-round with all the work we are able to do.”

We went to see Disney’s version of A Christmas Carol yesterday. It was a pretty good take on

We went to see Disney’s version of A Christmas Carol yesterday. It was a pretty good take on Charles Dickens’ classic story. I realized in watching it that a story becomes a classic because there is great truth in it and that truth stands the test of time. It was the lesson of idolatry that popped out to me first. I have had this subject in the forefront of my mind for quite a while now and seeing the movie helped me put my thoughts together to reflect on it.

The first ghost that visits Scrooge is Marley, his former business partner. When Marley arrives he is covered in chains and those chains are attached to heavy trunks that he is pulling around. He tells Scrooge, in essence, that during his lifetime he put his emphasis on business and making money. He is there, with the help of three other ghosts, to show Scrooge that he is doing the same and needs to change his ways. When Marley leaves, Scrooge walks to the window and sees many other spirits all with their various attachments. This is the beginning of the click that will lead Scrooge away from a lifetime of worshiping money, security, and wealth.

As I have explored religion and learned about eastern traditions, I have given thought to the idea of “false Gods.” There is only one God and the first commandment says that we shouldn’t put any Gods before the one. At some point along my path I read a book that touched on this subject. You see I had always viewed “false Gods” from a religious perspective, thinking only in terms of prophets or teachings that would lead people astray. In the book I read “false Gods” was given a broader and more realistic definition. I learned and accepted that anything that gets more of your attention and energy then God is an idol.

I began to think of the many things I have worshiped over my lifetime, the things I have put before God at various stages of my journey. There has been safety, security, sickness, health, friends, family, my wardrobe, getting good grades, my weight, parties, my jobs, intimacy, motherhood, TV, food, money, status, reputation, acceptance, and the list could go on and on.

I was at a workshop a while back and we were put into small groups to do an activity that inevitably turned into discussing our challenges. Someone in my group said they were struggling with idolatry. I took the bait on that one and started talking about the things I consider idols that many others don’t pay mind to. She said for her the “false God” had become her church. She was a minister. Over the last few years she had a major role in building a new church. It was growing by leaps and bounds and she found that she was constantly working towards this growth. She felt she was not as connected with God, that the lines between God and church were getting blurry. She was making a conscious decision to reconnect with God and follow the path laid before her (even if it meant leaving behind the empire that was being built around her).

This is always a goal for me. It is the true meaning of the term dying daily. To die daily is to take a moment to acknowledge and release (ah, yes easier said then done, I know) your attachments. I have to constantly remind myself to let go and at the very least I am in a place where I can witness myself holding onto things. Eventually my moment will come and hopefully it will not involve ghosts and chains….
