The AP is reporting that a second Nigerian man has been taken into custody today aboard a jetliner in Detroit after locking himself in the bathroom. The incident took place aboard the same Northwest flight that was attacked Christmas Day.

What is going on with security at Northwest Airlines?…and why are Nigerians trying to attack our people?

US authorities arrested a leading American scientist who had worked for the White House and NASA and charged him with attempted spying for Israel.

Stewart Nozette, 52, was apprehended after a sting operation involving an undercover FBI agent, the Department of Justice said, adding that there was no wrongdoing by Israel.

He is charged with “attempted espionage for knowingly and willfully attempting to communicate, deliver, and transmit classified information relating to the national defense of the United States to an individual that Nozette believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer.”

Nozette, who was arrested in the Washington suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland and taken into custody, could make his first court appearance Tuesday on the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“The conduct alleged in this complaint is serious and should serve as a warning to anyone who would consider compromising our nation’s secrets for profit,” said David Kris, assistant attorney general for national security.

Nozette developed an experiment that fueled the discovery of water on the south pole of the moon, and previously held special security clearance at the Department of Energy on atomic materials.

In addition to stints at the US space agency NASA and the Department of Energy, Nozette worked at the White House on the National Space Council under then-president George H.W. Bush in 1989 and 1990.

“From 1989 through 2006, Nozette held security clearances as high as top secret and had regular, frequent access to classified information and documents related to the US national defense,” the Justice Department said.

In early September, Nozette received a phone call from a person “purporting to be an Israeli intelligence officer, but who was in fact an undercover employee of the FBI,” it said.

“Nozette met with the UCE (undercover employee) that day and discussed his willingness to work for Israeli intelligence,” informing the agent that “he had, in the past, held top security clearances and had access to US satellite information.”

The scientist offered to “answer questions about this information in exchange for money,” the Justice Department said.

“In addition, Nozette allegedly offered to reveal additional classified information that directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, and other major weapons systems.”

Over the next several weeks, Nozette and the undercover agent exchanged envelopes of money for answers to lists of questions about US satellite technology.

First, Nozette answered questions for a 2,000 cash payment, including one answer that “contained information classified as Secret,” the Justice Department said.

Later in September, the suspect picked up a payment of 9,000 dollars in cash and more questions, answers to which he returned to a drop-spot in a manila envelope this month.

FBI agents retrieved the envelope and found “the answers contained information classified as both Top Secret and Secret that concerned US satellites, early warning systems, means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack, communications intelligence information, and major elements of defense strategy.”

It was unclear how Nozette came to be targeted by the FBI sting. The Department of Justice and FBI did not immediately return calls seeking further comment.

“The FBI is committed to protecting the nation’s classified information and pursuing those who attempt to profit from its release or sale,” said Joseph Persichini, Jr., of the Washington branch of the FBI, according to a statement.

In 1987, the United States sentenced Navy analyst Jonathan Pollard to life in prison for providing Israel — from May 1984 to his arrest in November 1985 — thousands of confidential military documents on US spying, particularly in Arab nations.

Israel has appealed for Pollard’s release repeatedly, and in vain.

Hale gave her 43-year-old husband Peter a dose of a natural aphrodisiac called ‘horny goat weed‘ before she blindfolded him and led him into local woods to act out her fantasy, it was alleged.

The couple kissed and ‘rolled about on the leaves‘ as part of a ‘playful game‘.

Then Hale sat astride her husband as he lay face- down on the ground and slit his throat with a knife, before plunging it into his neck and chest several times, a jury was told.

It is alleged that she abandoned his bleeding body when she was disturbed by a passer-by, and drove to a nearby railway station for her first meeting with a man she had befriended on the internet. But police arrested her when she returned home.

She denies attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Hale publishes her poetry on the internet and, according to her website, likes to write verse about ‘people, animals, love and everything that people care about‘.

She worked part-time as a sales assistant for a DIY firm. Bristol Crown Court heard how the bizarre events unfolded last Christmas.

Made using extracts from a leafy wild plant, the herbal drug is legal and is widely available to buy in capsule form.

It is said to have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

A young Muslim woman has been warned by police that her life is in danger after a male friend lost his tongue in an alleged assault using acid in an apparent honor attack.

The Danish Asian man is in a serious but stable condition in the hospital after an incident in Leytonstone, East London, three weeks ago. Sulphuric acid is said to have been thrown in his face and he was stabbed twice in the back.  The 24-year-old, being treated in a specialist unit in Essex, is now blind, his tongue has been destroyed and he suffered burns over 90 percent of his body.

The woman, who claims the relationship is an innocent friendship, and the man live in the Asian community of East London, where their relationship is said to have upset her family for bringing dishonor on them.  Scotland Yard have issued what is known as an “Osman warning” — telling the woman that there is a threat to her life.  A police source told The Times that she had not been moved into a safe house but police were in daily contact with her.  Detectives believe that the man and woman were not in a sexual relationship but were just friends.

Two men, aged 19 and 25, are due to appear before Waltham Forest Magistrates Thursday, charged with the attempted murder of the 24-year-old man on July 2. Both men are said to be related to the woman, one is understood to be her brother.  Five men have been arrested and bailed “pending further inquiries” by police.

At the time of the attack a police source said: “It looks like this gang set out to deliberately target this man. They were dressed in masks and gloves so none of the acid would get on them.”

It has been understood from sources within the trial system that the first criminal trial to feature ordinary citizens taking part in deliberations is expected to open in early August this year; the case is that of a murder in May this year in Tokyo’s Adachi ward. There are currently around 80 cases on trial which fall into the new jury trial system, but judging by the pre-trial build-up there is a high chance of this case being the one to attract most public attention.

According to the Chief Prosecutor’s office, since the jury trial system started on 21st May this year, 60 regional and local cases had been tried by June, numbering a total of 83 defendants. The largest number of defendants in cases which will fall into the jury trial category was in Osaka with 15 people receiving sentences; 23 of the defendants tried nationwide were up for violent assault, 13 for murder.

Statistics compiled by the Asahi Shinbun from sources involved in ‘pre-trial consultations’ – where court representatives, prosecutors and defense lawyers meet to discuss the key points of a case before the trial proper begins – reveal that at least 9 further cases are already scheduled to open in the six local courts in Tokyo, Saitama, Gifu, Osaka, Sendai and Akita.

Out of those, the consultations for the Tokyo trial of the Adachi ward case due to open today (1oth June) will be the first such involving jurors to occur. According to sources in the legal world, the trial is expected to open at the beginning of August but, depending on the predicted length of the trial and the availability of witnesses, may even start a little earlier at the end of July.

Also, consultations for an attempted murder case in Saitama are planned to start on 12th June. Concerned parties predict though that these preparations for the trial of this case are unlikely to be completed in one sitting, which means that the Tokyo murder case is highly likely to keep its place as the first ‘criminal jury trial’ in Japan.

The defendant in the Adachi ward murder case is an unemployed 72-year-old Mr. Fujii. According to the affidavit, Mr. Fujii killed his neighbour – a bone and posture therapist by the name of Kojima – with a knife after having an argument with him. The lawyers for the defense are not intending to argue over the procedural aspects of the trial, but will appeal for clemency and argue mitigating circumstances based on the unpremeditated nature of the crime. The family of the victim have appealed for the case to be made open to them under the ‘Victim Participation System’, and it has been recognized that they will attend the trial proceedings.
