They even let me roll for some loot which is why I came away with my very first piece of Tier 4 gear: Gloves of the Fallen Champion!!!
I don’t have a long story and I forgot to take pics of every boss, but we downed Attumen the Huntsman & Midnight, Moroes, Maiden of Virtue, Big Bad Wolf (yes, I got turned into Little Red Riding Hood and promptly gotten eaten — my what big teeth he has!), and The Curator.

The posts on NRT seem to be getting further apart but longer perhaps as karmic payback for them getting smaller and more regular over on Mark’s Impotence blog – So I apologize if this sometimes degrades into nothing but a wall of Zzzz worthy text.

Last night I ventured back into Karazhan for the first time in a fair few months – First time since before Christmas at least since thats when NI moved their raid schedule to days I couldn’t do and forced me to raid Mags and Gruuls instead – and I’m glad to report it went really very well. We followed a somewhat less than typical path of [Attum -> Moroes -> Maiden -> Opera (Oz) -> Nightbane -> Curator] before calling it a night.

Oh yes, I said Nightbane! The whole experience was much smoother than I was expecting with no wipes and most people well within the gear margins for such a run. Kudos have to go to our two tanks who – even though the Paladin was somewhat under-geared Spell Damage wise – did a top notch job of keeping me alive. That is not to say I didn’t nearly die once or twice, with no-one HoT’ing me for Maiden until about 50% and me tanking the Shadow Priest and then the Ret Paladin on Moroes it could have gone far worse.

My only two rewards for the night were my T4 gloves (that now makes 3/5 needing the head and Shoulders so I’m going to both Gruuls and Kara again soon as much as my current helm is actually better) and a fist full of badges which I turned in for an Epic relic which I felt was probably the best upgrade for me since there is only one other relic in the game worth considering but impossible to get. Although bizarrely my new Relic is proc based granting 100~ Attack Power on chance of casting a shock (Approximately 30-50%) … But the proc animation is the Blessing of Wisdom.

On other news I just finished watching a fascinating lecture approximately an hour and a half long on YouTube that I recommend checking out, you can find the first episode here (or watch below) and you’ll have to get the rest for yourself! It’s an interesting discussion about how the Bible as the inspired word of God has been altered many thousands of times, a quote from the videos approximates to: “There are more inconsistencies in the New Testament translations, than there are words.” Of course Theists are quick to say that he’s wrong and everything he says is either misleading or irrelevant, in fact I watched a Theist response to his book that in the course of a few minutes both said the book intentionally misleaded people and stated that it was O.k. for the church to make additions to the Bible.

It’s not misleading to CHANGE THE WORD OF GOD, but it is to talk about how scribes make mistakes and intentional changes over the course of thousands of years?

Sheer brilliance.

I have also spent some time on the Official Wrath forums in a few threads which illustrate perfectly how they don’t understand the implications of the changes they suggest. One of the things I truly despise is the idea that the Bard would be a viable new class. Yes, it would and could work but these people are ignoring the big picture! As soon as you put in a class who’s primary role is buffing (and they have described buffs for everything from Haste to Regen) Blizzard will then start making instances more difficult to scale with these buffs and ultimately all you end up with is a Raid that effectively requires a Bard and possibly several.

How is this a Good thing? There is no space in WoW for a pure buffing class … When told that he says that they will also have some DPS so the statement is effectively changed to There is no room in WoW for a required Buffing class let alone another DPS-Buff Hybrid.

Just to illustrate to you the general intelligence level of a WoW Forum poster there is also a thread asking if we will finally discover “Quel’thalas” in Wrath of the Lich King.

I have also recently watched two new movies, Planet Terror and The Happening. Planet Terror is a great Grindhouse flick which may not appeal to everyone but is still pretty funny. The key is to not take it seriously and you probably shouldn’t eat meat whilst watching

The Happening is shit. Do not watch it. I’ll give you five reasons:

Mark Wahlberg is one of the worst actors in the world

Zooey Deschanel (you might remember her as that annoying bitch who couldn’t act in Frasier) is absolutely terrible.

This movie might actually have the worst script ever made.

It’s not scary. It’s not even remotely entertaining.

It was the trees that dunnit.

I will sum up the movie with my favourite sequence:

————–
Women on Phone: Honey, are you near the Window with the tree? What can you see?

Wahlberg has shocked expression

Wahlberg: Tell her to get away from the window with the tree!
Women on Phone: Honey, get away from the Window with the tree!

Women puts Girl on Speaker phone
Girl is speaking jibberish

Women on Phone: Are you ok? What’s the matter?

Sound of Girl smashing through window
Women previously on phone hands Wahlberg the phone and runs away crying

Wahlberg puts the phone his ear
Wahlberg: Don’t go outside
————–

Don’t … Go outside? You have to see his face and the whole scene to really feel how stupid that is but my God people laughed at parts of that movie they shouldn’t have. Two people left at about the hour mark.

That is about all I can be bothered to write, nobody has submitted their 5 Tracks for my last post challenge so I will give you another chance.

Regards,
JamesR.

The Happening annoys me, because it’s a perfectly solid premise that M. Night managed to completely ruin.

We were so DAMN CLOSE!

First or second try, can’t remember which, we got Moroes down to 2% before we wiped. That really sucked, cause I think we woulda beaten Maiden tonight too if we had downed Moroes. However, I’m happy; I won the three-way ranged DPS roll for [Handwraps of Flowing Thought] from Attumen, as well as getting the Violet Signet from rep, and should be able to get the Scryers trinket tomorrow from my dailies gold. I think our raid learned what we need to do to down this SOB, and we should be able to manage it Friday assuming we can get enough tanks & heals.

I’m doing surprisingly well at working towards my hit cap, and also getting geared. I’m planning on getting the cloak from heroic badges–I have a +spell hit cloak right now, which is nice for bosses, but it’s not exceptional. Grabbing the epic badge cloak should help, and I’ll have that for next week most likely.

I use a site called “Be Imba!” (be.imba.hu) to check my Kara readiness periodically; I’m getting closer gear wise. My main problem right now is my chestpiece–it’s very bad for raiding, so I need to get a new one.

I was 3rd on the DPS charts, too, behind Raiseplz and Nathanielle (no surprises for who’s on top!), and 3rd on the DPS charts is nothing to sneeze at! (Unless the DPS charts are covered in pollen, of course.)

It did kinda hurt today not downing Moroes, especially after we got him to 2%. But I’m sure that we can down him soon, and the raiding experience that our group got is invaluable. Well done all.

On this weeks trip into Karazhan, for the first time in a long while, we had someone along who had n

On this weeks trip into Karazhan, for the first time in a long while, we had someone along who had never been very far in. This meant that I needed to explain each boss encounter – something that I used to do every week. However, being so used to everyone knowing the fights, I stumbled over a few pieces and left out a couple of (occasionally important) details. So, I’m going to start writing up a description of each fight (and associated clear), mainly so that I can make sure I’ve gone over everything in my mind.

Heading in to Karazhan? The obvious place to start, is Attumen/Midnight. Well, perhaps the basement would be the best place to start.. but in my experience everyone starts with Attumen, and the goes to the basement when they get stuck on him or Moroes. However, it has been many months since I ventured down there, so I’m going to skip it. You probably should too (unless you are a hunter looking to tame a bat or spider.)

So, what type of group do you need?

Two tanks, or at least a tank and an off-tank with a solid tanking set – tankadins and druids make a great 2nd tank, and they can heal (tankadin) or dps (druid) on the sinlge tank encounters. Both do need to be uncrittable, and for warriors/tankadins uncrushable.

Two or three healers. Three is my preference, though having two main healers, and a off-healer should work.

That leaves 5 or 6 dps. Having two CC makes things much easier – priest and hunters are the only real options there. Otherwise, bring high dps. You don’t want to be too heavy on melee (for later bosses), but you can make pretty much any setup work.

When you first zone into Karazhan, you will have three paths available. One the immediate right, there is the door to the basement. Further up on the right are the stairs up to the ballroom – essentially the path to everything post-Attumen. Finally, there is a doorway on the left that leads to the Stables, as well as Midnight.

The series of pulls leading to Attumen is not bad, but does require you to move at a reasonable pace. The 25 minute respawn on trash may test groups early on. If respawns pop, they will join when Midnight is engaged – so at that point, simply regroup at the entrance and take a 10 minute break. Trying to save a few minutes by playing catch-up on the respawns will only lead to heart-ache.

If someone dies, tell them to run back in. It is a short jog, just keep moving, and rebuff when they make it in.

The pulls are a combination of horses (Chargers and Stallions) and humans (Apprentices and Stable hands), all undead. The Stable hands can heal either type of horse, and seem resistant to frost traps, though Shackle does work. Both horses can be trapped or Shackled. The Spectral Chargers have a charge/aoe fear combination that can be a bit annoying. It can be dealt with by grouping everyone up on the horse, or by simply making sure you pull them back enough that you don’t pull another group if/when you eat a fear.

Before doing to first pull, look into the stables and watch for the PAT – a double pull horse/human – and mark them.

Then, when they are clear, you can start the pulls. I like to do the first few pulls out into the entryway. I tank in the corner near the front-door, with all the ranged dps up on the platform by the stairs – this ensures that should we get feared, no one goes anywhere dangerous.

The first pull is a single horse. Pull back to the corner and kill

The 2nd pull is a double pull. You can shackle, trap, off-tank, or simply have the tank pick up both. A word about shackle – it is my favorite CC for Karazhan, but unless you have a hit-capped Shadow Priest, it will break early. For a holy priest, Heal->Heal->Shackle is a good rotation to get used to. Or have a hunter get used to dropping a trap next to the priest. Or both. Otherwise, this pull is simple, just make sure to pull them into the entryway before CC is applied, or else you may pull to PAT as well.

The PAT is next. Pull them back as well. Doesn’t really matter which you take first.

Now, you can move everyone into the stable hallway. Position the group back where the first pull was, and check out the next pull. Two horses, with a roaming stable hand. Grab the horses when he PATs away, and pull them all the way back to the group. Through the next archway, there is a 2 pull on the immediate left – grab them and pull back to the group. Then there will be two more double pulls, with stable hand PATing between them. Pull the pair on the right, then the stable hand, then the pair on the left. Always pull these back to the group, and make sure you have room to get feared. It will happen, so just plan for it. There is plenty of room, use it.

Now, there are two pulls to go. A four pull (2 horse, 2 humans), and a five pull (an extra human). Use traps, shackles and OTs. The chargers will dash around and steal traps. Until you gear up a bit, these pulls will be a bit hectic.

Finally, you are at Midnight. He won’t engage till you hit him. I prefer to have my off-tank tank him in place. He is very basic tank-n-spank, with no real tricks. At 95% health Attumen will appear. You need to have a tank pick him up, and drag him away – if you don’t grab him fast, he will go eat a healer, so be ready. If your Midnight tank is a Pally, have them hold off on Consecration around 95% or you may have trouble grabbing Attumen.

I pull Attumen back to the left of the group, into the corner. If you have a warrior on him, you can reflect back a curse and disarm him. Keep all dps on midnight, and when he hits 25%, he will run over to Attumen, and they mount up. This is an aggro-reset, so the tank needs to grab him fast, and dps and healers need to hold off – I’d even avoid having HOTs up, as having your first attack miss could lead to a dead healer.

At this point he starts charging. Have everyone else group up tight on the horses bum, and they aren’t an issue. The safe-zone is large enough that Hunters can keep shooting, so there is no reason to take any charges. With that out of the way, it is a simple tank-n-spank again.

With a “mostly in blues, just starting Karazhan” group, this fight may take upwards of 5 minutes (our record length was 5′57″ for a successful kill, though that required us to manage less than 1900 dps as a raid.) Get everyone in epics, and you can easily finish in less than 3 minutes (2′39″ is our record, though I know many groups take him down in well under 2 minutes).

For a first fight in an instance, and probably the first 10-man boss battle that many will see, this is a fun fight. At lower gear levels, the 25-minute trash timer will require you to keep moving, but Attumen/Midnight is a very doable encounter. If you are having problems with tank death, then check your healer/tank gear level. If DPS is pulling aggro, then you need to have them hold off. If the transitions are causing you problems, then you may just need to work on having the tanks be a bit quicker, and perhaps have the healers hold off for a heartbeat.

There is another trash pull guarding the blacksmith. A 5 pull, with some fire damage, but nothing to worry about if you get to that point. I generally skip this pull, but while learning having to ability to repair is very important. Should you skip it, the pull will despawn on a soft-reset (everyone leaving the instance for 30 minutes) once Attumen is dead. Behind them is another pull and a stairwell. You can leave them be. There is very little reason to ever take that path up – though, once you have cleared the first 2 bosses, you can let the instance soft-reset (or just come back later in the week) and run around and explore a bit.

As some of you are aware the intention to venture into Karazhan has always been one of the Guild’s goals. Those that have visited here recently will have noticed the new Team roster on the right.

This is by no means a final list and even then the list will be subject to change depending on the availability of members and from what is seen of their performance in other instances.

For now, it is the list we will be trying to go with if possible.

This does not mean that if you have not been chosen you will never be going into Kara. It merely means that you will either have to await your turn in the rotation or you have not yet gained entry to Kara via the key quest chain.

Other factors that will influence your selection is ownership of gear capable of surviving in there and whether or not you play nice with the rest of the Guild. The person who constantly demands others to fill out their group, or who only does an instance when it’s in their interest, is not going to find a place opening for them soon in the team. Other members are also looking for people to fill the empty spots as well…so why not volunteer and earn yourself the reputation of being who can be counted on in Kara?

At the moment our prime objective in Kara is team organisation & communication, the preparation of resources such as health potions and then the taking down of the first boss in the stables area – ‘Attumen the Huntsman’

Once we can do this regulary with a stable and reliable team then we will venture further into the instance. Let’s crawl before we start walking, as the saying goes.

Duties may be delegated out by myself or the Raid Assistant, which is most likely going to be offered to Zerdesht, due to his past experience of raiding, or Patrik
(Urulf). If someone wishes to volunteer their services then by all means let me know.

The Guild expects any duties accepted by a member to be completed within the time scale given. This may be such a task as providing or collecting 10x Super Health Potions for deposit into the Guild Bank for the upcoming Raid.

In addition to any duties a raid member is expected to be fully equipped, provisioned and ready to go into the instance at the time stated. Saying your going to be late by 15 minutes is perfectly acceptable as long as one of the Raid organisers is aware of the issue, we all have RL issues to attend to at times and the unforseen will always pop up when you least expect it.
“Pls pls wait while I visit a vendor pls I need to repair”…will not be regarded well and may possibly lead to a substitute being asked to step forward to replace them.

I’ve found the following guide to Kara on TenTonHammer to be a decent way of familiarising ourselves with Attumen and his undead mount Midnight. I would expect all Team members, including substitutes, to become memory familiar with this boss and all subsequent encounters if we decide to proceed further through Kara.

The Guide also suggests the following line-up for entry into Kara;

2-3 x Healers
2 x Tanks
1 x Mage
1 x Warlock
3-4 DPS

For now were only short on a Tank and a Healer, but one of those issues may have a solution upcoming and the other may be sorted through speaking to a Guild I’m on friendly terms with.

So…let’s start preparing ourselves for our Guild’s first Raiding event!

We downed Illhoof for the first time and nearly downed Prince! After the chess event, we decided to make our first pass on the Prince. After two attempts, we got him down to 6%! Six percent! We then tried Illhoof again. It had been nearly two months since we’ve tried Illhoof, so we had a lot better gear (I think Dantofist got at least three upgrades on this run, including Attumen’s horse!). It took us three tries, but we did it! I almost think that Illhoof is harder that Prince. However, the struggle was worth it since Llye finally got his testicle…I mean tentacle staff! w00t!

Next week, we are looking at Prince and Netherspite, we’re comin’!

note: this is not a complete Attumen strategy guide. There are plenty of those already in existence.

note: this is not a complete Attumen strategy guide. There are plenty of those already in existence. This is rogue-specific advice on the fight.

Attumen is the introductory fight in Karazhan. He is optional.. you can skip him and go straight to Moroes. But why would you want to? He’s pretty straightforward and he drops the Worgen Claw Necklace and Steelhawk Crossbow (hunter gear, but still a stat upgrade for many rogues if there are no hunters in your party). Also, he has a rare mount drop. He’s not hard, and gives up one BoJ.

The worst part of the Attumen experience is the trash. It is on a 25 minute respawn timer. Unless you are overgeared, you only have time for one or two pauses/wipes before you start to get repops showing up behind you. When you start the boss fight, any trash mobs that have respawned behind you will also pull.

For the trash on the way to Attumen – a rogue can evasion-tank or stunlock the undead humans, if necessary. Don’t try it on the horses. They hit much harder and can one- or two-shot most rogues.

Also note that the undead humans can be pickpocketed.

Once you do the boss pull, its exactly the kind of fight a rogue likes – your target can be tanked in one spot standing still, so you can park yourself at his back and go to town. My guild pulls Midnight over to the wall and starts light dps on him. Rogues, don’t even bother doing more than white damage here. You want the tank to get a big head start on threat.

Attumen himself spawns and the 2nd tank picks him up (hunter misdirect is useful there). Our guild burns Midnight down at this point while Attumen is tanked well away from the rest of the group so that his cleave doesn’t catch anyone else. You can dps Midnight fairly hard. <strike>Since he is undead, he is immune to rupture.</strike> Keep SnD going at all times. If you have combo points to spare you can use eviscerate every now and then. You can always use Vanish to reset your threat, but I prefer to save that until the last phase if I can. Edit: Since Patch 2.4 undead mobs can be Ruptured.

Attumen will periodically drop an AoE curse on the raid that reduces your chance to hit by 50%. Use Cloak of Shadows to remove this, but be careful. If you’re hitting, and the tank is missing a lot, you can overtake his threat very quickly. Hopefully someone in the raid can decurse the tank.

When Midnight reaches 25% health he and Attumen join together. Attumen mounts up and their health resets to 100%. STOP DPS AT THIS TIME. Threat is wiped and you need to let the tank reestablish aggro. Once the tank has good aggro, plant yourself behind them and go all-out. I like to save my Vanish for sometime during this phase – I catch up to the tank’s threat, hit Vanish, drop back to zero threat, Ambush and start again.

Watch out for Attumen’s charges. You won’t be a target because you are melee. But if you have anyone standing at range then Attumen may charge them, then slowly trot back to the tank. While he goes back to the tank he may do a shadow cleave on the way that will one-shot a rogue. Don’t stand between him and the tank in this case. (even better – if no one is at range he won’t charge, so have everyone cluster around behind him)

This fight is ideal for a rogue. If you are a damage-meter watcher you should be at or near the top on this fight. Enjoy it because you probably won’t be there for most other fights in Karazhan.

Attumen is optional, but a nice thing about taking him out is that you can go around the corner (careful! there is one more pull there!) and have access to a repair NPC once you reach Honored with Violet Eye. At this point, its time to move on to Moroes.

Oooohhhh – noch vor nicht all zu langer Zeit hätte ich folgender Karazhan Aufstellung gesagt “Wie weit solls gehen? Ballsaal?”:

1x Off Krieger

1x Def Krieger

1x Feral

2x Shadowpriest

2x Holy/Diszipriest

1x Schurke

1x Eleschammi

1x Paladin

-Prinz in gut 3.5 Minuten
…das was unten herinnen steht wurde einfach im vorbeigehen umgewemmst. Mittnacht groß antanken? Wozu?

What’s your game?
Sascha

Just some brief raid stats on our last trip into Karazhan. 2nd in overall damage output, but I did heal vs. Maiden and two rogues Ozonea & Nightelfben switched spots sometime during the raid (count 11 people in the list).

1st night- to Opera (badge run)! Who?

Druid Tank

Paladin Tank

Holy Paladin

Resto Shaman

Enhancement Shaman (me!)

Rogue

Rogue

Rogue

Mage

Shadow Priest

So, I was 2nd in dps overall, but at 510 dps… nothing to party about. We had 3 rogues in there so that was fun vs. Maiden.

Here’s a full summary on lil’ shammy.

The good: Crits were good at 38%. I think I can do better on crits. Would like to see it over 40% crit rate. Windfury was 32% of the attacks (I am dual-wielding of course) and noticed that WF is hit capped at 6% miss rate. Hmm!! So… missed 16.8% of white damage hits, so that means I missed out on approx 20K damage.

Missed average white damage (not including glancing) = Normal Misses + Crit Misses

Missed average white damage =
((((Actual Hits * Miss Rate)+Actual Hits)*(1-Crit Rate))*Avg Damage)*Miss Rate) +
((((Actual Hits * Miss Rate)+Actual Hits)*(Crit Rate))*Avg Damage)*Miss Rate)

Missed average white damage =
((((397*16.8%)+397)*(1-38%))*271*16.8%) +
((((397*16.8%)+397)*(38%))*271*16.8%)

Missed average white damage =
13,088.9 +
8,022.2

Missed average white damage =
21,111.2

The bad: Not enough dps for SSC/TK. Our rogue and mages and hunters get near the 800-1000 dps mark. Might be steep hill to climp on that one. Need to bump up dps with better gear. Also, even though my +hit rating is 115 & my miss% is pretty low (16.8%), I would wager a lot of raid enhancement shamans (RES) would go for more +hit rating. Earth & Flame shocks only at 7% crit rate. Yuck.

The ugly: My biggest crit was 1785. I have done some 2300 and 2800 crits with my Dragonmaw before, Oh well. Also, try not to end up healing on Maiden so I can dps her next time. I didn’t pot or flask during the entire raid on Karazhan.

Compared to a Black Temple enhance shammy, Brage, where his dps in SSC is well over 800. I need some buffage I think.

Hyross @842dps/ 27.5%miss rate/46% crit rate :

http://www.sunderguild.com/logs/Serpentshrine%20Cavern/Hydross%20the%20Unstable%20-%2011.04.2007/brage.html

Leotheras @928 dps/10% miss rate/46% crit rate:

http://www.sunderguild.com/logs/Serpentshrine%20Cavern/Leotheras%20the%20Blind%20-%2011.04.2007/brage.html

If I had 842 dps vs. Hydross my guild leader would fall over backwards.

My goals:

AP: 1336 (check)

Crit: 23 (check: already over that, geez.. like 32%)

Hit: 170 (big X: here’s where I need to work most because my current +Hit is 115, but I shouldn’t worry about hit too much according to Elitist Jerks)

Health 7218 (check)

Mana: 6305 (check)

Attumen the Huntsman

I really don’t know why I was tops on Damage to Attumen, but I like the looks of it!

Too many melee vs. Maiden
We had 2 shot at Maiden because we basically had too many melee in when she did her big chaining Holy Wrath that ended up nailing our tank for 17,321 damage in one KA-POW! I switched to my +1460 Healing set and just did Bolts of Lightning and backup healing on the raid. She went down for good after that.

Looks like Maiden does in fact target shaman totems. Each of the totems below was eating a Holy Fire from Maiden. Even Romulo doesn’t like our Resto Shaman’s Wrath of Air totem.

If we get to Prince tomorrow night, I’ll post the rest of the Kara story.
