The answer to this week’s question will be after the break.

Firstly though, I’m yet again sad to announce that nobody entered this week’s Hex Factor contest, and so another discount code is going to go to waste. I suppose I could award it to myself for that “sterling effort” at writing poetry… Anyway, don’t forget that Azeroth United are still going strong in their charity drive, and at this time have raised a whopping $6700 for Child’s Play, so if you haven’t yet donated go right ahead!

So, with regards to the Wind-Up, the answer is of course, 9:

England win both golf and tennis,

Scotland win both golf and tennis,

Wales win both golf and tennis,

England win golf, Scotland win tennis,

Scotland win golf, England win tennis,

England win golf, Wales win tennis,

Wales win golf, England win tennis,

In 2010, it’s going to be August 3 to 10, and I’m teaching two classes! (See the whole Art Unraveled schedule)

Phoenix Sunrise

Coming to AU is exciting! I’d like to make it easier for you if you are taking my class. I’ll provide most of the supplies. All you need is what you are already bringing for other classes–a variety of pens or pencils, your journal, a pair of scissors or X-acto knife. Aren’t bringing any of that? Then show up with a big heart, a sense of adventure, and your imagination.

I’m a creativity coach, so there is a lot of that going on in class. It’s deep, meaning-making work with fun and sharing.

Raw-Art Journaling For Perfectionists
August 4, 6:30 – 9:30p.m.
Started 50 journals and never filled a single one? This is the class for you.

If you are a perfectionist, you know how hard it is to work deeply and playfully. Perfectionists start with high hopes, and then get discouraged because their work is not exactly what they had imagined.

Notorious procrastinators, perfectionists start 50 journals and finish none of them. You will make many journal pages, and keep the ones you like. No one will know about the rest.

You will learn how to choose a journal that suits your needs, how to use your own ideas to write in and create abstract designs of your own invention in your journal. You’ll feel better about yourself and your prefectionism, while laughing and working.

No previous art experience needed.

Raw-Art One-Sentence Journaling
Monday, August 9, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Keeping a journal doesn’t have to be a time drain. Learn to keep a journal with just one sentence a day, two if you are ambitious. In this technique class, you will learn how to keep an interesting journal that you look forward to working in.

We’ll play word games, make magic word tickets, invent new names for our many different selves. You’ll learn Haiku writing and how to fight negative self-talk. You’ll also learn how to use words and abstract designs of your own invention to turn a regular journal into a raw-art-journal. This is a technique class, so you will experiment on different size sheets of paper.

No experience needed.

Buy Cheap Open: An Autobiography

Buy Low Price From Here Now
From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography.

Agassi’s incredibly rigorous training begins when he is just a child. By the age of thirteen, he is banished to a Florida tennis camp that feels like a prison camp. Lonely, scared, a ninth-grade dropout, he rebels in ways that will soon make him a 1980s icon. He dyes his hair, pierces his ears, dresses like a punk rocker. By the time he turns pro at sixteen, his new look promises to change tennis forever, as does his lightning-fast return.

And yet, despite his raw talent, he struggles early on. We feel his confusion as he loses to the world’s best, his greater confusion as he starts to win. After stumbling in three Grand Slam finals, Agassi shocks the world, and himself, by capturing the 1992 Wimbledon. Overnight he becomes a fan favorite and a media target.

Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. Alongside vivid portraits of rivals from several generations—Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer—Agassi gives unstinting accounts of his brief time with Barbra Streisand and his doomed marriage to Brooke Shields. He reveals a shattering loss of confidence. And he recounts his spectacular resurrection, a comeback climaxing with his epic run at the 1999 French Open and his march to become the oldest man ever ranked number one.

In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle trainer, all the people who help him regain his balance and find love at last with Stefanie Graf. Inspired by her quiet strength, he fights through crippling pain from a deteriorating spine to remain a dangerous opponent in the twenty-first and final year of his career. Entering his last tournament in 2006, he’s hailed for completing a stunning metamorphosis, from nonconformist to elder statesman, from dropout to education advocate. And still he’s not done. At a U.S. Open for the ages, he makes a courageous last stand, then delivers one of the most stirring farewells ever heard in a sporting arena.

With its breakneck tempo and raw candor, Open will be read and cherished for years. A treat for ardent fans, it will also captivate readers who know nothing about tennis. Like Agassi’s game, it sets a new standard for grace, style, speed, and power……..
Readmore

“Viscerally Candid, Strewn with Unanticipated Grace, Inspiring, Saddening; Awesome” 2009-11-22
By Michael Mahoney-Pierce (California)
Almost any reader, I imagine, will be captivated by this fine book, which artfully details the evolution of one of the more complex, engaging public personalities around today. At its core, this book is about love, about finding peace through giving to others, about the obstacles that prevent one from tracking down a life in which they are happy. In Agassi’s case, these elements play out on the big stage, in front of world, and it is enthralling to learn how incredibly far-off the public perception of Agassi was throughout his career.

Much has been said already about the events of his life–one will form their own opinion. In the end, though, this book is far more than a summary of events and thoughts one can use to formulate an informed opinion of Agassi; it is an unexpectedly moving story of a maturation and the acceptance of love as the central driving force behind all that is good. “This is why we’re here. To fight through the pain and, when possible, to release the pain of others.”

Throughout the book I frequently stopped and thought “wow, Andre, what a writer you are”; I was, then, a little disheartened to learn for the first time in the Acknowledgment that he had been given a great deal of help from J.R. Moehringer, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. But, as with the rest of the book (as far as I can tell), Agassi is completely honest about how their working relationship unfolded and how it came to be that Andre’s name was the only one that came to appear on the book itself. I will also say that there is an occasional egotism that appears in the tone of the writing that seems to be unrecognized by the author, but, as an athlete, I think it can be truthfully said that you can’t be a champion without a little innate egotism in your blood to drive you.

I devoured this book in two days, at the expense of the rest of my life. It is a great piece of artwork–both the book and the life that it portrays. I have already shipped it to several friends, and look forward to seeing if it effects them as it did me. There were points in Agassi’s career when he rolled along the edge of perfection (a word I now use with great care, after the reading), but never as meaningfully so as he has in putting together “Open”.

Oh, and by the way-the descriptions of the tennis matches aren’t bad either.

I was extremely excited when I learned he was writing a book. This book did not disappoint. It was so fascinating to learn specific details of his life and career and his thoughts during critical moments. He is very “open” and honest in this book and I respect him for it.
“courage and inspiration” 2009-11-21
By Thomas P. Mowrey (Phoenix)
Dear Andre I loved your book. It is the best written autobiography I’ve ever read. You have a way with words that is a gift to you. I look at you as a poet sort of an open book. It took alot of courage to do what you did and be truthful. No matter what your tennis peers say , your book i think reaches people, the common folk. I have read some negative comments from some of the tennis greats of the sport and they just don’t get it. You’re an artist with the courage to tell all. I was very suprised to see some of the comments that it was so shocking to alot of great tennis players. Well they were never in your shoes. It’s very disheartening to me to read things from nadal and federer that were so in shock about you being open and honest. Not so much for Nadal……….i view him as a person the same way he conducts himself on the court………….No compassion on the tennis court and no compassion or experiences in his life to try and understand you and realize that everyone has shortcomings and i hope he learns this of himself in real life. I was suprised by federer’s comments as well. To me he seems more mature and understanding. It’s almost like they give no respect to a man that helped pave the way for them. No one is perfect and i hope they come to a level of understanding like you did.

there are some things in the book that i have a few gripes about. Especially the Michael Chang thing. Just as you Andre have grown into a person. I’m sure Michael has grown as well over the years. At the time it seemed like he was very zealous in his Christianity…….but maybe now he has grown out of that or grown more deeper in his faith. Just like you had to discover things about yourself. To me Michael has always seemed like the guy that will keep growning. I hope you can talk to michael and have a heart to heart discussion now. Maybe he has alot of things to say to you , how he’s grown more as a person.

i was glued to your book and thank you very much because i too went through bouts of depression and anxiety. I too was continually knocked down as an adolescent and just kept getting back up. Anyway thanks for the great book. The best of its kind and God bless you as you continue on your journey!

“Engrossing Agassi! Great Read!” 2009-11-21
By Jason Bresson (New York City, NY)
Following tennis, Andre Agassi was an interesting player.

I remember how quickly he went down the tennis ladder and never understood why.

OPEN is a courageous self evaluation of some of the negative issues involved

with being pushed and prodded as a gifted youth athlete. We’ve all seen the

typical Little League parent who insists in their heart they are doing the best thing for their child.

Agassi says he hated tennis and was not fit to do anything else. He also goes into losing his hair and explains

how this may have cost him a major tournament. His relationship with Brooke Shields is also discussed.

With all the money he made from tennis, one must judge him from our own gut about his motivation for

writing this. It is written well and keeps your interest. I highly recommend this book!

AU finally got a shipment in, and they were distributing it free to all staff/faculty/students who were members of a priority group. I got the LAIV (live attenuated intranasal vaccine). They sprayed some stuff up each of my nostrils, and told me I was comletely vaccinated. Hooray! I’m pretty sure I already had the swein flu a few weeks ago (especially since NPR told me that if you had a flu-like illness, it’s almost certain it was H1N1 since swine flu has crowded out the seasonal flu), but I wanted to be on the cautious side since I’m flying home for Thanksgiving. And what I had was awful, so I want to try and avoid getting sick like that ever again!

2. I went running in Rock Creek Park yesterday, and I ran into my very first horse on the trail! It was kind of exciting. Here’s a picture:

3. Walking to church today I saw two black squirrels. They were really cool-looking – totally jet black. A little creepy, but mostly cute.

First, Antress has updated his Modern pack to 4.75, and with the update come some real sonic improve

First, Antress has updated his Modern pack to 4.75, and with the update come some real sonic improvements in addition to a new plugin or two. He’s really getting better at what he does, I think he’s getting up there with Bootsie in terms of the quality of his releases. Maybe a little more attention to bug squashing could be in order, but they work for most people without problems and the sound quality and versatility of his pack is really nice. A dev to keep watching, for sure.

KVR had their 2009 Developer Challenge, and while all of the entries are worth checking out, there are two stand-outs that I felt I should mention here. First, from the amazing Bootsie, an analog tape simulator that rocks: FerricTDS. It can be used subtly or overtly, and it’s really just (as usual) a pretty astounding freebie, easily on par with commercial tape sims. The second stand-out in the DC ‘09 lineup is HybridReverb, combining IR and algorithmic into one extremely attractive package. It’s not only free, it’s also open source, so free-as-in-freedom software fans take note. As they say it’s not an over-the-top or flashy reverb plugin, but rather an excellent way to exert subtle control over the ambiance of your tracks (provided, of course, you have quality IRs to start with; they have a sizable library of good ones on their main site, but they are not free for commercial usage, unlike the software itself).

A developer of whom I was not aware until today, TerryW, released a plugin on KVR called ReLife, which through some sort of amazing voodoo magic can take over-compressed, squashed material and breathe dynamic transients and separation back into it. As the developer says, don’t expect miracles if there is a lot of distortion from digital clipping, but take it from me, on a lot of material it sounds awfully miraculous. I wish I could post some examples of squashed commercial releases that I’ve processed with it, but as it’s a free plugin perhaps you can do the same yourself. There are a lot of applications for such a plugin in the studio – processing mastered tracks to reinvigorate them with some of the subtleties that loud mastering can eliminate is just one thing you can get from this this simple-to-use plugin. The GUI is just a bypass button and a post-gain control, with an input and output level meter, but the magic under the hood is very impressive.

BlueCatAudio has released a new and improved freeware pack of plugins with very broad cross-platform support, including (beta) RTAS versions, definitely worth checking out! I haven’t got deep in with these at all yet but my initial impressions are positive, this seems like a useful package.

I’ve been helping a gentleman named Efflam dial in some plugins he’s released lately, including the excellent freeware Sansamp G2 emulation, NoAmp, as well as the extremely affordable and quite versatile Fuzz Face simulation, Kung Fuzz. I think he has a good philosophy, keep products simple and make them function as well as possible at achieving their exact goals. His other products include an excellent non-sampled, physical modeling technology Wurlitzer virtual instrument named Blue Reeds which is again quite affordable, as well as a free Pianet-like virtual instrument called Glue Reeds. He’s still busy at work with an upcoming Fender Blender emulation and I’m helping him test something very cool right now which might be of a great deal of interest to musicians, I’ll update when I can.

Gain-heads rejoice, joining LePou’s excellent ENGL preamp sim comes a new, different take on the same idea: TSE X30 testimonials from ENGL lovers over at the Andy Sneap forums suggest that between the two of these plugins, there are a lot of people who won’t be needing their physical preamps any longer at least when it comes to recording. As usual with preamp sims you’ll need to use external cabinet simulation to get a good recorded sound, there are plenty of options available these days.

And work continues on AcmeBarGig’s G-Spot suite, he’s been keeping me updated on its progress and I’ve had several versions which show significant progress toward getting it ready for public usage. I’ll try to get some clips up of the most recent version soon. He’s issued an interesting and perhaps provocative statement over at the GuitarAmpModeling forums inviting commercial software developers to join him in releasing a freeware amp head. Judging from the linked thread, it seems he’s talked with a number of developers who all have great ideas, and he’s trying to get a big community effort going so that some of those great ideas can be realized for the benefit of everyone. I personally wonder how many commercial software makers are going to be willing to get involved, but from what I can tell from that thread it looks like he’s getting some bites, so who knows? Marc Gallo, the man behind StudioDevil, has pledged his support (which isn’t all that surprising, given that he’s had BritishValveCustom out for some time as a freeware product – maybe a new freebie from him will let him flex his muscles some more, he’s a heck of a programmer) and I’m not sure but it looks like Peavey might be interested as well. We’ll see how that goes, I’ll be keeping an eye on things and try to keep you guys updated.

Oh, I almost forgot – Native Instruments has made the current beta version of Guitar Rig 4 publicly available, with quite a number of things in it that seem to me to indicate that really this was their vision for Guitar Rig 4 when it shipped but some things took a little longer to finalize. No problem, happens in the software world all the time, that’s what patches are for – and letting the public get in on the beta means that everyone who just wants to have the most current version with the cool added features (a new amp, master effects section, and others) can get it, while folks mainly concerned with stability and who have more patience can hold off ’til it’s finalized. Nice thinking, Native.

That’s all for now, to all my American readers happy Thanksgiving – I will probably be somewhat out of pocket next week as my wife and I will be going to visit family to celebrate the holiday, but I’ll still be watching things and I’ll try to have an update here or there. I’m rushing now to finalize a couple of reviews for Frugal before we head out tomorrow, very well could be a midnight email from yours truly

P.S. – I’ll work on getting these added to the Freeware page ASAP, whether or not I’ve managed to get the format restructuring done. Thanks for your support, constant readers, you don’t know how nice it is to see you all coming around. This blog is a labor of love and it’s all for you guys.

I googled ‘Chocolat,’ and I found this:

Next I found a pic of this:

Gateau Mousse au Chocolat (Via Recettes du Quebec)

OMG. I just need a full weekend off so I can *try* to make these. And then devour them!

Gateau Mousse au Chocolat (4 Ingredients Only!!!!)

[Taken from Setting a Chocolate Trap (article) by Janet Keeler.

8 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
8 eggs, separated
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Unsweetened cocoa powder and whipped cream for decoration (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a heavy-bottomed sauce pan, melt the chocolate and butter over low heat. Stir occasionally until smooth.

Remove the chocolate mixture from the heat and whisk in the egg yolks until blended. Immediately pour the mixture into a large bowl. (The melted chocolate and butter will be hot enough to poach the egg yolks, which will lightly thicken the mixture.)

In a large bowl, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until stiff peaks form.

With a whisk, fold of the stiffly beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it. Using a rubber spatula, fold the remaining whites into the chocolate mixture until smooth.

Pour 3/4 of the chocolate mousse into the pan. (Refrigerate the remainder until ready to use.)

Bake on the middle rack 30-35 minutes. The cake will rise quite high at first; when it beings to fall back in the center, it is done.

Unmold onto a cake rack to cool right-side up. When cooled, the cake will have a concave center. Transfer the cake, with the aid of a long metal spatula, to a serving platter and fill the center with the remaining mousse mixture. Refrigerate until the mousse sets, about 1 hour.

We’re over halfway to the end now and AU’s charity drive is still going strong! So let’s keep supporting them in their cause with this week’s Hex Factor contest – poetry.

Now, I use the term ‘poetry’ loosely. Obviously there are many different kinds, and as always I’m open to interpretations. All I want from you is a short poem (unless you really want to do a long one) about either Child’s Play, Azeroth United or the Hearts, Hands and Voices drive.

You could do a witty limerick:

There once was a Child’s Play charity,

Whose money raising brought much hilarity.

They raised so much cash,

That the children had a bash,

And sadness became quite the rarity!

Okay, that was awful. Maybe a haiku?

Hearts Hands and Voices

Azeroth United calling

Raising funds for kids.

Well, you get the idea, and I’m sure you can do much better than me! I look forward to your emails at veliaf AT hotmail DOT co DOT uk.

Well unfortunately Thursday is here and I haven’t actually received any entries to this week’s contest! I’m somewhat disappointed because I do enjoy giving out prizes, but oh well, so long as people continue to support the Child’s Play charity drive.

On which note, Azeroth United has amazingly blasted past their original goal of $5000, and (at the time of writing) are sitting at about $6400! It’s certainly an incredible achievement, but with several weeks left, their new target of $10000 is definitely attainable with your help. So if you haven’t already, head over and donate – a lot or a little, it all counts and it’s all for a good cause.

Vel.

Prince of the Dark Kingdom Ten years ago, Voldemort created his kingdom. Now a confused young wizard

Prince of the Dark Kingdom

Ten years ago, Voldemort created his kingdom. Now a confused young wizard stumbles into it, and carves out a destiny. AU. Nondark Harry. Mentor Voldemort. Book V, Ch19 is up! Bobby has a secret. Sirius’ coronation gets bloody. Lots of politics. Enjoy! Harry Potter – Rated: M – English – Drama/Adventure – Chapters: 101 – Words: 650,437 – Reviews: 5411 – Updated: 11-16-09 – Published: 9-3-07 – Harry P. & Voldemort

My Thoughts:

Lily and James fled to Germany and lived as Muggles with their infant son Harry. In this world Harry was born on August 1st, not the infamous July 31st and Neville was the only possible prophecy child. When Harry was 8 years old his parents were killed by burglers, and Harry was sent to live with the Dursleys. Harry, who pretends to only speak German and refuses to sleep in the cupboard, does accidental magic at 10 and is picked up by WYRA, an organization that removes Muggleborns from their homes and adopts them out to Wizard families. Harry is too old to be adopted, instead he tests high enough on the magic scale to qualify for Hogwarts where he immediately comes to the notice of Voldemort. Voldemort finds himself both irritated and fascinated by Harry and makes Harry his protege, a tool to be used, an apprentice to mentor, and a child to love. This is an entirely platonic (though very intimate) relationship that is the core of the story.

Canon characters are present but wonderfully twisted. Luna is a goddess possessed werewolf. Hermione is the beloved, adopted sister of Draco (and Lucius’ despised mudblood daughter). Ron is a bitter and annoying prat of a Slytherin. (The author has excellent reasons for how Ron became a Slytherin and it really quite works.) Sirius & Remus are both werewolves and provide the gateway to a society that is dark, alien, and complicated. Harry’s relationship with Snape is complex and interesting as Snape functions as both a parental figure and also the left hand of Voldemort. This story has excellent world building and interesting characters. The terrible and wonderful world built by a sane, but broken Voldemort is both realistic and fantastical. Highly recommended. 5/5
