Rebecca Bedsole of The Corner reported last month that Auburn is ranked number 16 among best small metro areas to launch a business, according to CNNmoney.com.

This isn’t the first time Auburn has fallen into the limelight for such matters, however. U.S. News and World Report ranked Auburn among the top 10 places to live in 2009.

Phillip Dunlap, director of Economic Development for Auburn, first arrived in Auburn in 1984 when the population was just over 28,000 – closer to the number of students enrolled today at Auburn University instead of 56,000 current residents.

Auburn has nearly doubled in size in a quarter century!

Population growth had to come from somewhere; so how did folks get here?

Dunlap says that we have gone from 840 jobs to nearly 4,000 jobs, bringing not only people to the area, but revenue as well.

But again, it’s not just jobs. Auburn City School Systems have been ranked in the top 100 school systems in the nation by Offspring Parenting. Even better, Newsweek ranked Auburn High School in the top 2 percent of all high schools in the United States.

I always knew that Auburn, Alabama was the Loveliest Village On The Plains, but I had no idea how many honors it holds.

There is so much negative press about high school students. All too often there appear news stories

There is so much negative press about high school students.

All too often there appear news stories about high school students caught fighting, drinking, or even saying “meep” (this is not a typo). Of course, stories like these are what sell newspapers or attract visitors to news sites, so it is to be expected. After all, who wants to hear stories of “good kids.”

I do.

I had the pleasure of collecting tickets for recent tournament games conducted by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. These games included soccer, field hockey, and football. While collecting the tickets I remember thinking how nice it was that so many of the students were polite and courteous. Repeatedly I heard “please” and “thank you” at each of the events, terms that one would think had disappeared from the vocabulary of our youth if you listen to some adults. As a matter of fact, most of the problems we had at these events involved rude adults, not students.

For this I want to give a shout out to the students from the following Massachusetts schools: Auburn, Bartlett, Douglas, Grafton, Holy Name, Leominster, Longmeadow, Maynard, Nipmuc, Oakmont, Shrewsbury, Smith Academy, Southbridge, and Wachusett.

You represented your schools with class and your communities should be very proud.

After too long of an absence, Hamilton’s on Magnolia has reopened after some very refreshing c

After too long of an absence, Hamilton’s on Magnolia has reopened after some very refreshing changes. Experienced patrons will recall the kitchen being in your lap at any seat other than the bar area as well as the lack of group seating. Those days are gone with the recent renovations.

The exterior remains mostly unchanged from the front. The side and rear underwent changes, mostly in the form of windows, expansion and cleanup. The front does now include outdoor seating, making Hamilton’s one of the few, if not only place with true “sidewalk dining” in Auburn.

Inside, the bar area remained mostly unchanged which is a big plus in our eyes. Between the cozy and warm atmosphere to the large window view, Hamilton’s bar was a great place to dine, drink or both. Their wine list retained some hard to find selections and added a few more popular labels. They also now have draft beer and even feature some of the new-to-Auburn “high gravity” selections.

The dining and kitchen area underwent the most radical, and needed changes. The kitchen is still open, but is now along the back wall. With the move went the less savory smells Hamilton’s was sometimes known for leaving on its visitors. The restroom area has been updated and redone – another welcome change – moving it from the category of fraternity bar to upscale restaurant.

The dining area now features a section which can be arranged to accomodate a group of up to 12-14 comfortably, although you’ll still be alongside couples and groups of 4 in booths. All in all, the dining area maintained the cozy, small feel while adding the option to bring an after-work or small club size group in as well. The interior walls were dressed up with colorful paintings and the addition of the aforementioned windows.

Now for the real attraction: the food….

Thankfully, the menu remained virtually unchanged. The now famous friend green tomatoes remained as an appetizer and should be tried at least twice. The lunch menu is large enough to give everyone in your group something to ponder, but small enough to be manageable during the work day. Joe recommends the jalapeno barbeque chicken sandwich. This one has enough firepower to satisfy those who enjoy real spice, but isn’t so overpowering you’ll be stopping for Altoids and Tums on the way back to the office. It is also a nice twist using chicken instead of pork or beef.

Dinner still includes a pork tenderloin and two steaks, a filet and ribeye. There are seafood and poultry dishes as well including a tuna and salmon selection. Josephine and I each ordered a steak – she opted for the filet, and I chose the ribeye. Neither of us had a beef with the way our steaks were prepared or tasted. The vegetables however, left something to be desired. I don’t want to overstate this because you may not face the same dilemma on your visit. Put simply, our mashed potatoes did not taste fresh and the asparagus was overcooked. Dessert was a bit of a letdown too, but we chalked it up to being week-one of the opening.

Most of you who have dined in Auburn have noticed service is the weakest link and most common complaint. Hamilton’s was, and thankfully still is, the exception. Our waitress had a passing knowledge of the bar menu, but stumbled when asked to recommend a wine (that’s okay, it was just a test anyway). She redeemed herself on the food, demonstrating knowledge of the preparation and taste of every dish we asked about. She proved attentive but not stalker-like during the meal.

One last note is the website – which unfortunately follows a trend in the area of being overly simplistic and missing the opportunity to draw in patrons who will otherwise go to Montgomery or Columbus when searching for something other than franchise dining.

To sum it up, Joe highly recommends Hamilton’s and Josephine gives it a nod too (though not as emphatic).

Three years ago, Bobby Petrino had parlayed the title of Head Football Coach at Louisville into Head

Three years ago, Bobby Petrino had parlayed the title of Head Football Coach at Louisville into Head Football Coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Steve Kragthorpe turned the head job at Tulsa into the head job at Louisville.

Three years later, neither remain in the same position, and Lousiville is far from it’s peak.

Long gone are the days of Brian Brohm and a packed Papa John’s Stadium.

Long are the days of Michael Bush and Elvis Dumervil ruling the gridiron in Louisville.

However, with Kragthorpe gone, the Cardinals have a chance for revitilization.

As is always the case, this hire must be handled with care. The program needs energy. It needs passion. It needs vision. It needs direction.

The slew of candidates to fill that job is high and wide right now.

Names that should be considered? Kevin Sumlin (Houston), Skip Holtz (ECU), Guz Malzahn (Auburn), Mark Stoops (Arizona), Frank Solich (Ohio), Kevin Wilson (Oklahoma).

Most of those guys are young up and comers with an exciting brand to sell and a vision to pursue. They want excellence and they demand it.

Solich is the only one with a proven pedigree. He isn’t flashy, but he deserves another shot at a BCS gig. He has been stuck in College Football exile at Ohio University. And he put together a 9-3 season this year to boot.

All would be terrific choices to challenge Rick Pitino for “face of the university.”

Right now, Lousiville football is barely on the campus map. Students flock to games in the tens, not the thousands. Alumni flock to the games and spread out in the stands, utilizing the multitude of empty seats surrounding them to park their purses, coats, and blankets in case they are needed.

What Lousiville needs is a spark, a catalyst, someone with the intensity and drive to take the keys to a volvo, and drive it like a corvette.

That is how Petrino did it.

That is how Lousiville did it.

Now, they must erase the “did” and replace it with “does.”

Through many reports this morning, it appears there has been a shakeup in the SEC bowl order with the folks down in Tampa throwing a WRENCH in everyone’s plans…

Apparently the Outback Bowl is going with Auburn, who has out-politicked Tennessee for a New Year’s Day bowl game in Florida.

Now the Chick-Fil-A Bowl people will have their hands full, picking between the Vols and Georgia’s large, home fan base. Tennessee did win head-to-head, but don’t forget that Chick-Fil-A loves its hometown teams, as it took Georgia Tech last year.

This is how I see things shaking out…

Outback: Auburn
Chick-Fil-A: Tennessee
Music City: Georgia
Liberty: Arkansas
Independence: Kentucky
Papa Johns: South Carolina

Per ESPN, the lineup would look like this: Auburn playing against Penn State down under, Tennessee matched up with Virginia Tech (the Chick-Fil-A reps just creamed themselves and a UT/Clemson matchup wouldn’t be that exciting), Georgia against Miami (also a great matchup, getting UGA would secure the Music City to do some politicking to secure the U instead of Miami heading to the Champs Sports Bowl), Arkansas vs. East Carolina, Kentucky playing Iowa State, and the gas pumpers of SC playing UConn or South Florida in the Pizza boy bowl.

Stay tuned.

Got two freelance jobs this week though. I’m currently on a road trip in Montgomery playing driver for a lawyer who’s in the backseat working on a brief on the way down to our final destination in Auburn. She’s fighting a first amendment fight to keep Auburn City Government out of the bedrooms of college students. I happen to like the first amendment, and so should you. So I’m 100% in support of the action.

So I’ll be tweeting from the road with updates. I’ve also managed a job interview, so hopes on this trip are high. Details on twitter…

The SEC will once again be sending a representative to play for win the National Championship. Yeste

The SEC will once again be sending a representative to play for win the National Championship.

Yesterday was a classic day in the SEC. Just when you thought things were starting to fall into place with the SEC Bowl destinations, all hell broke loose. It started early in the day when Mississippi State upset took Ole Miss to the woodshed for an “Ole Fashioned Beatdown.” Houston Nutt once again failed to deliver in a big game in which he was favored (see: Ole Miss at Auburn, or ask any Arkansas fan). The chaotic day continued when the SEC flexed its muscles on the inferior ACC, and South Carolina dominated Clemson and ruined CJ Spiller’s hopes as a Heisman darkhorse.

Later in the day, the SEC continued its rampage as Florida (-25) covered against FSU, 37-10. CBS decided that it was going to air clips and bits from the game, but it was generally consumed with the Tim Tebow Senior Day coverage (yes, I also just vomited in my mouth). In the nightcap, Tennessee held off a tough Kentucky team (like it has done for the past quarter century–think about that), Georgia went down to Atlanta and got some payback on Ga. Tech from last year’s upset, and LSU held off the Arkansas Fighting Malletts in OT to capture the Golden Boot for the first time in three years.

So for you scoring at home, that’s SEC 3, ACC 0.

It also means the SEC bowl picture is about as clear as the Tennessee football team’s legal records.

Here’s what we know:

-Alabama and Florida will play for it all in Atlanta on Saturday. Saban vs. Meyer. Roll Tide vs. Go Gators. Houndstooth vs. Jean Shorts. The winner will go west to Pasadena to beat Ohio State again face Texas, barring a Longhorn collapse in Dallas. The loser will head south for New Orleans to play (your guess is as good as mine) in the Sugar Bowl.

-LSU is probably going to Orlando to play in the Capital One Bowl. Les Miles and the fighting hats will likely face Penn State (intriguing matchup) or Iowa. The fans travel well and LSU has good national recognition. No way Capital One passes on them.

-Ole Miss and Tennessee will be the next two teams picked because the Rebels finished third in the West and the Vols have the tiebreaker over UGA in the East. I don’t think the rumors of the Cotton Bowl and Outback Bowl “trading picks” are true–I’m betting Ole Miss will return to Dallas and play in the ‘09 Cotton Bowl (although the game is not in 2009 and isn’t being played in the Cotton Bowl), and the Vols will ring in the new year in Tampa (watch your gas stations, Floridians).

This is where it gets shaky. After the first three teams (and the two teams bound for BCS bowls), we have five teams at 7-5: Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, and South Carolina. The bowl pecking order is as follows: Chick-fil-A (Atlanta), Music City (Nashville), Liberty (Memphis), Independence (Shreveport), and PapaJohns (Birmingham).

Arkansas (7-5)
Pros: good traveling fan base, new coach, strong finish, difficult schedule, played UGA, UF, LSU close, exciting offense
Cons: 3-5 in conference, haven’t won bowl game since 2003
Outcome: The Hogs are a great fit for both the Liberty Bowl and the Independence Bowl because of proximity. If it comes down to it, I would expect the Liberty to take Arkansas.

Auburn (7-5)
Pros: good traveling fan base, new coach, strong finish, national recognition, played Bama close in Iron Bowl
Cons: lost 5 of 7, including final two rivalry games, 3-5 in conference
Outcome: I don’t see Chick-Fil-A taking Auburn, but they could be in play for Nashville. I think both of the next bowls will pass on the Tigers and you’ll find them in Shreveport, with an outside chance of the Liberty bowl taking them. Enjoy Northern Louisiana, Auburn.

Georgia (7-5)
Pros: solid traveling fan base, difficult schedule helps explain 5 losses, national recognition, coming off big win, 4-4 in conference.
Cons: fans are less than excited, staff changes are coming, 1-3 vs. ranked opponents this year
Outcome: expect the Dawgs to go bowling at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The only possibility of this not happening is if Chick-fil-A goes with South Carolina, in which case UGA plays an ACC team in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

Kentucky (7-5)
Pros: strong finish, excited program, won at Auburn and at UGA, 4th bowl in a row w/strong showings in all 3
Cons: fan base is not Georgia or Auburn, 3-5 in conference
Outcome: the Cats are the interesting case here. Kentucky fans always turn out in Atlanta for SEC basketball tournament, but I don’t see them being taken ahead of both Georgia and Auburn. Nashville is an outside shot because of strong showings in prior Music City Bowls. If Nashville passes on the Cats, expect them to drop down the ladder all the way to… Birmingham.

South Carolina (7-5)
Pros: fair traveling fan base, coming off big win, played Bama and UF close, Spurrier name recognition
Cons: 2-4 finish, poor showing in Outback Bowl last year, 3-5 in conference
Outcome: Also a toss-up, but I don’t see SC in Atlanta over AU and UGA. Likely destination is Nashville, unless they get shunned for Kentucky or Auburn, in which case they plummet to Birmingham.

So there it is folks, probably no clearer than when you started reading. What do you think?

I know, I know. It has been an extremely long time since I dropped my last post. My apologies. Thing

I know, I know. It has been an extremely long time since I dropped my last post.

My apologies.

Things have been busy around my house the past few months. My wife and I got married, I’ve been working a lot lately, and I’ve also been going to school in the evening. All of the above consume my life on a daily basis, leaving me no time to do anything.

On another note, this College Football season has not been as great as I thought. A lot of new teams showed their colors and were introduced to the Top 25, and others ended up being a dud (UGA, Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, etc.) and didn’t do all that well.

Auburn, my favorite team, started off this season at 5-0. With their new head coach, the program was under a lot of heat from the Tuberville fan-crowd. After this great start, Auburn started to play some competitive teams; all of them coming from the SEC. Needless to say, the only three teams that Auburn beat in the SEC were Miss. State, Ole’ Miss and Tennessee. Their loss to Alabama was a hell of a game, and I’ll give it to them, but they should have been playing like that all season.

The University of Georgia bombed this whole season. Once thought of as Top 10 contender, UGA has fallen to a 6-5 season, losing to the likes of OSU, LSU(4), Tennessee, Florida (1), and Kentucky. Their new starting QB, Joe Cox, leads the SEC with 18 touchdown passes this season, but has also thrown the second most in interceptions (11). Let’s not forget the amount of penalties that occur during UGA’s games, either. They’re averaging 70 yards in penalties a game, the second year in a row that they’ve done this.

Now onto to good stuff…

UGA is playing GT tonight in their annual rival game, also known as, “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.”

And “hate”, it is.

So far tonight, UGA has rushed for over 300 yards. Freshmen Waushan Ealey has carried the ball over 160 yards, averaging 10.6 yards per carry.

Amazing.

Out of nowhere, UGA has pulled their defense together and stopped everything GT has thrown at them. GT has a combined 266 yards, 148 rushing and 118 receiving.

With 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter, it’s tough to say what will come out of this game. UGA lead GT 17-3 at the half, but it should also be mentioned that UGA lead GT by 16 at the half last season, ultimately loosing 45-42.

I’m pulling for UGA, but there’s way too much football left to played.

On another note, here are my ‘Not-So-Top-25′ upsets of the week:

West Virginia 19, #9 Pittsburg 16
Oklahoma 27, #12 Oklahoma St. 0
South Carolina 34, #17 Clemson 17
N. Carolina St. 28, #24 N. Carolina 27
Miss. St. 41, #25 Ole Miss. 27

And finally, here are my ‘Almost-Top-25′ upsets of the week:

#2 Alabama 26, Auburn 21
#3 Texas 49, Texas A&M 39
#15 LSU 33, Arkansas 30 (OT)
#19 BYU 26, #21 Utah 23

The ‘Not-So-Top-25′ upsets are reserved for Top 25 teams who suffer a loss during regular season. ‘Almost-Top-25′ upsets are for Top 25 teams who come within 10 points of a loss.

Jesus, it was a rough day at work. Working at a CBS affiliate, and sitting in the control room Frida

Jesus, it was a rough day at work. Working at a CBS affiliate, and sitting in the control room Friday waiting for the 6 o’clock news to start really made me sick. That was because we had to wait for the game to end. A game that made me open up a bottle of Maalox within the first 5 minutes and began chugging. Then I refused to watch. But waiting to put the news on air after the game which ran over about 10 minutes, I was forced to watch after it was put up on the program monitors. Then I opened another bottle of Maalox and didn’t stop consuming it until the end of the game.

Auburn did not have a chance at anything playing Bama. Only the bragging rights in the state and the team that spoils Bama’s chance for Pasadena. They almost accomplished that.

The Tide defense was overwhelmed with trick plays from Auburn. After a 67 yard TD run from some trickery on a reverse on their opening drive, Auburn caught Bama off guard with an on-side kick that led to another TD with 5 minutes to go in the 1st.

Almost every good stat of the Tide’s this season was gone. Their 2nd ranked rush defense gave up 151 yards. Their rushing yards only amounted to 73. Seventy Three.

Yes, that’s right, Heisman front-runner, Mark Ingram, had an un-Heisman type of game. He had only 30 yards rushing. No touchdowns. The Auburn defense was tough against the run.

Greg McElroy did an outstanding job. He threw for 216 yards and 2 TD’s, which includes the 4 yarder to Roy Upchurch with less than a minute and a half in the game to put Bama up 26 to 21.

Auburn attempted a drive with just less than 1 1/2 minutes. I believe it was this time I opened up my last bottle of Maalox. Last 3 seconds, a Hail Mary… I grabbed the bottle and put it to my mouth. Lots of white and blue jerseys in the end zone, I can’t see straight, what is happening? Then I see the ball drop to the ground. My stomach settled. I put the bottle down and reached for the news scripts. I was ready to work.

An early Christmas present for Crimson Tide fans… the 2nd consecutive undefeated regular season.

Watching the Iron Bowl with my dad, there was eight minutes to go and we both said the same thing. H

Watching the Iron Bowl with my dad, there was eight minutes to go and we both said the same thing. Here comes a seven to eight minute drive to win it for ‘Bama.

We both saw how physical they were and how well they execute in Atlanta on September 5th.

Sure enough, Greg McElroy found 3rd string tailback Roy Upchurch for a touchdown with about a minute and a half to go.

What happened to Auburn’s up-tempo offense on the last drive is for another column, this one is about why Alabama will defeat Florida in the highly anticipated SEC Championship next Saturday.

Florida’s offense revolves around the physicality of Tim Tebow and the finesse of Chris Rainey, Jeff Demps, Emanuel Moody, and Brandon James.

Alabama’s offense revolves around sound desicion making by McElroy, as well as a three headed tailback rotation that runs up the ole “Broken Tackles” and “Yards after Contact” stat each and every game. Upchurch, Mark Ingram, and Trent Richardson will wear you down. Then they will exhaust you. Then they will run over you.

After that, McElroy will hit Julio Jones on a seven yard hitch route, who will turn and level the oncoming defensive back and continue on.

That’s the offense, and despite it’s struggles getting the ball in the endzone during the middle of the Iron Bowl, ‘Bama rolls when the fourth quarter and money drives come along.

They same will occur when the face the Gators in Atlanta.

And that’s only talking bout the matchup when ‘Bama’s offense faces Florida’s defense.

However, there will be no change when the roles are reversed.

Rolando McClain has already met Tim Tebow. He will spend a lot on time with him next Saturday, most often pushing him to the ground.

Terrence Cody? He’s like twice the size of Demps, Rainey, or James. Ouch.

The only way the Gators can win this game is if magically the Florida wideouts flip the switch for the first time this season and do their best Louis Murphy/Percy Harvin impression from the 2008 UF team.

Unfortunately, the Gators have failed to make plays on the perimeter and downfield with their wideouts all year. Florida has gutted through a number of wins with stiffling defense and a “game managing” Tebow.

Some call Tebow superman. He has been anything but in 2009. He needs to be the 2007 or 2008 version of Tebow for Florida to earn their berth to the national championship.

If not, Alabama will be partying as they dominate the fourth quarter while booking their plane tickets to Pasadena.

(Alabama 27 – Florida 13)

The 74th annual Iron Bowl was full of great plays.

The boys from Auburn and Alabama were making the pads click today. Auburn played out of their minds and Gene Chizek doesn’t have that football football team far away from winning the SEC again. Be patient Auburn fans, next year is going to be a lot different.

For Alabama fans, the showdown with Florida is set. Some causal fans have said that the SEC championship will be the actual National Championship. I’m not to sure about that. It’s just a shame that those two teams can’t play in a true championship game.

The Nick Saban and Urban Meyer chess match is certain to start in the headlines early.

SIDE NOTES: Brian Kelly’s Bearcats won again in fine style. I watched them pretty closely and his spread offense certainly uses all the weapons available. Tony Pike dropped 6 TD’s and a battle is set for the game against The fighting Wandstashes.

If anyone was listening Spencer Tillman from CBS said that Brian Billick was a strong viable candidate for the ND coaching job. That means where there is smoke there is fire. It might even be a done deal

What a trooper QVC host Dave James is! But get the man some strong coffee, or drugs. Or better yet,

What a trooper QVC host Dave James is! But get the man some strong coffee, or drugs. Or better yet, cite QVC for cruel and unusual punishment of its employees.

For QVC’s big Black Friday event, James is appearing live for the network for 28 hours straight. He started at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night. If he’s not on the air live, he is appearing on a Webcast, showing viewers a behind-the-scenes look at QVC.

About 4:45 p.m. Friday, we checked out the Webcast and saw James with fellow host Sharon Faetsch. He was using a Dell laptop that is going to be tomorrow’s Today’s Special Value, and he looked like he needed toothpicks to keep his eyes open.

Sharon Faetsch

“He’s a little zombiefied at this point,” said Faetsch, since James had been on 20 hours straight by that time.

“I can only close one eye at a time, or I’ll fall asleep,” he said at one point.

James could barely feign interest in Faetsch’s babbling about a taco-egg recipe. Finally, he got up and said he was taking a break.

“I’ll be back in just a few minutes,” James said. “Guys, I’m going to cut off my microphone.”

Thank God. It’s embarrassing when you leave you mic on when you’re in the bathroom. Didn’t Leslie Nielsen do that in one of his movie comedies, maybe “Naked Gun”?

James took such a long time getting back that Faetsch brought out a life-sized photo of him and sat it next to her, and then she had a backstage crew member come up and chat with her.

James is a pro, and it was amazing to see him summon up his energy and perk up when he want back on live TV.

Behind the scenes, we saw James being told he was going to have to do a “walkaround” with a cameraman with a Steadicam.

In between all this, James was concerned about the score for the Alabama-Auburn game. We know nothing about college football, but he was rooting for Alabama.

“Roll (Crimson) Tide, roll,” he said.

Some posters on QVC’s forums complained that looking at the Webcast “was like watching paint dry,” but we actually enjoyed watching Faetsch squirm when James took so long to come back from his break.

And we heard this behind-the-scenes tidbit: “We’re going to have to be quiet when we go where Jane (Treacy) is selling,” the stage manager told James.

As we turned off the Webcast, host Amy Stran, a former cast member of the soap operas “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” had just joined James.

At one point, Stran and Faetsch were chastised by a stage manager for talking about one of their wedding-ring sets while James was chatting to his wife on the phone about the football game.

“You can’t have two conversations,” the stage manager said, noting that viewers — like us — were hearing everyone talk at once.

QVC, let James go home.

Yeah! The lucky sock helped us score two field goals and now were within striking distance. Auburn still leads by 1 or 21-20 in this neck-to-neck Auburn vs Alabama game. My wife hid my left sock so it looks like BAMA will have to do it on their own.
