The warming glow of the corner fireplace, the plush seats on the banquets, and the damask covered table set with Haviland china, formal place settings of Rogers silverware and  Eisch stemware seemed so completely incongruous to Doctor Pinot, who days before was sitting in considerably more humble circumstances finishing his assessment of the situation on the ground. Having turned in his report, he hopped on the first transport headed stateside for the required debriefing, his letter of resignation in hand. He was going to let the House and Senate staffers fight this one out with the K Street boys over Cabernet and steaks at the Pennsylvania Avenue Capital Grille. He was exhausted but relieved to have put this thing behind him. The debriefing sessions, while never easy in the past, had taken their toll this time. Knowing that he had made the right choice, he walked out of the building without going back to clear out his desk, eyes forward all the way across the parking lot. Displaying a hard to suppress grin, he jumped into his Audi and drove without hesitation or regret to southwestern suburban Baltimore, now ready to enjoy an early Thanksgiving meal at his cousin’s restaurant.

Mondays were usually dark at the restaurant, except for the annual post Thanksgiving holiday party season, and this year was no different. The K Street consultants’ entertainment budgets were bigger than ever, and even being out of the Washington Post’s constant gaze, Doctor Pinot’s cousin’s culinary star had risen in these circles. The Chef had been smart enough to plan his space so that it was broken up into several small dinning rooms, allowing for the needed and frequently requested privacy for the ensuing policy discussions among Washington’s decision makers. But, Doctor Pinot and his cousin were the only dinners this mid-November Monday evening, in addition to his cousin acting as the lone chef. He put his elbows on the table, something he would only do now that his Mother was no longer here, having recently died close to her 101st birthday. Leaning forward the good Doctor pinched his eyes closed before reopening them to see that he was going to enjoy the most memorable Thanksgiving meal of his life.

The Chef ladled the butternut squash soup from the terrine into his bowl, topping it with a dash of nutmeg and Kendall Farms Crème Fraîche. As his mouth closed around the soup spoon, Doctor Pinot could taste the winter squash soups of his youth cooked in his Grandmother’s Indiana farm kitchen. One taste of the 2008 Navarro Dry Muscat quickly brought him back to the present with flavors that took him to his old backyard in California with tastes of Valencia oranges, Gold Nugget mandarins and Meyer lemons. The bright acidity was the perfect foil for the richness of the soup. There was no talking as both Doctor Pinot and the Chef were lost in the moment. The Chef cleared the bowls and headed back to the kitchen and soon reappeared with the next course.

Maryland Crab cakes cooked in the way that had made them the restaurant’s most popular dish. Fresh Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Cakes, produced from hand picked lump meat, lightly spiced and bound together with egg whites and dusted with a panko coating. Crisp, light, even etherial. One could taste the bay in this dish. The 2008 Mahoney Las Brisas Carneros Vermentino, with the flavors of white peaches and ripe Bearss lemons and aromas of dried wild flowers and bay breezes all worked in concert with the crab cakes, each complementing the other. Doctor Pinot looked up at the Chef with pride. His cousin understood the simplicity of it all. That balance mattered more than volume. It was the quiet, simple things that were evocative, and holiday meals weren’t so much about the present but about the sum of our pasts.

The side dishes came out of the kitchen next, caramelized brussels spouts with pancetta, just like  the dish at Rose Pistola, then a fan of multi-colored yams, and of course the dressing – dressing started with dried sourdough, thrown in a deep saute pan on top of the mirepoix that had been cooked with a Pinot Noir reduction, mixed with Minnesota wild rice and craisins: oh, and enough butter to bring a smile to the face of the late Julia Child. Next came the turkey, and what a turkey. The Chef, a leader in the slow foods movement and a locavore of note, found a Maryland breeder of heritage turkeys and secured a Bourbon Red for the dinner, split open and slow roasted on a bed of carrots, celery and sweet onions. The smells were the smells of childhood, and the tastes were from the days of jumping into Dad’s wood paneled station wagon and driving to Langmeyer’s Farm out along the old creek road, and picking out the bird before quickly dispatching it. Old Mrs Langmeyer would wrap the turkey in newspaper, and within the hour Doctor Pinot and his brother were plucking the bird while their Mom warmed the oven. With the first bite, Doctor Pinot couldn’t help but think that those birds had flavor, but perhaps not as much as this turkey which continued to deepen with each full fork. The Chef had picked two wines to go with the Bourbon Red, both from Doctor Pinot’s friend Eric Sussman. First up was the 2007 Radio-Coteau Savoy Chardonnay. A wine grown for Eric by Paul Ardzrooni on Savoy’s south facing slopes in the North end of Mendocino’s Anderson Valley. Doctor Pinot grimaced. Eric was a good friend, but it had been years since he had a California Chardonnay that he enjoyed. The Chef had been flawless in his wine choices so far, so the worst case being that he would just drink the Pinot. Wow, was this Chardonnay? Couldn’t be. The balance was impeccable, and the flavors of Gravenstein apples and Ponderosa lemons melded into a seamless finish. No, his cousin wasn’t going to enjoy this gem all by himself. The Chef put down his glass and flashed a wry look at his cousin, a non verbal ‘I told you so.’ Pouring the Radio-Coteau 2005 Terra Neuma Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Doctor Pinot’s face lit-up like a Broadway theater marquee. He knew his Pinots and this was one of his all time favorites. Biodynamically farmed by Mike Benziger, on the bleeding edge of where you can ripen grapes between Freestone and Bodega, this wine tasted of both earth and ocean. Flavors of dried Cape Cod cranberries, Burgundian Cassis, with back notes of French train station expresso reconfirmed his prior taste memories of this wine, and transported him to the middle of the vineyard, feeling the wind from the nearby Pacific on his face as he lifted his glass to the fog. Doctor Pinot’s thoughts retuned to the table as he tipped his fingers to salute the Chef for a masterful job.

As he loosened his belt a notch or two, Doctor Pinot looked up to see the Chef deliver a slice of gingered Bartlett pear cake that could have graced the cover of  Gourmet Magazine’s annual holiday issue. The Chef pulled the short cork out of a brandy bottle, a single vineyard Russian River Pinot Noir alembic brandy, and poured two-fingers in each of the small, round snifters. Lifting and clinking the glasses, both men got out of their chairs for a long overdue hug. As he patted his cousin on his back, Doctor Pinot knew that ‘God, it was good to be home!’

Estos días están apareciendo gran cantidad de firmas que han incorporado nuevos propulsores a modelos presentes en su gama. Por ejemplo, Audi ha incorporado el motor diesel de 3 litros y 240 cv para su modelo A4, tanto en versión berlina como en Avant. Pero hoy nos vamos a centrar en el C5, la berlina de la firma francesa Citroën. Se han añadido dos nuevas mecánicas, una de gasolina y otra diesel.

Hablemos primero del gasolina. Se trata del afamado motor THP 155, un propulsor turbo de 1.6 litros que desarrolla 156 cv de potencia. Esta mecánica sustituye al 2.0 atmosférico. Ya es un conocido del grupo PSA, y otros modelos, como el C4 Picasso, ya lo llevan montando desde hace algún tiempo. Es un motor desarrollado conjuntamente por BMW y Citroën, por lo que también se monta en el Mini. Tiene un consumo de 7.1 l/100 y homologa unas emisiones de 167 gramos de Co2 por cada kilómetro recorrido.

El nuevo motor diesel se ha denominado HDI 160 FAP, y desarrolla una potencia de 163 caballos. Su consumo es de 6,8 litros cada cien kilómetros de trayecto mixto y emite 178 gramos de Co2 por cada kilómetro que circula. El HDI 160 se puede vincular a dos cajas de cambios de 6 velocidades, una manual y otra automática.

Respecto a los precios, la mecánica de gasolina es más barata, 24.690 euros en acabado Premier. El HDI 160 FAP tiene unos precios que oscilan entre 27.140 y los 32.540, según la versión y el equipamiento que se le asocie.

Timo Scheider ha conseguido el título que lo acredita campeón del DTM, renovando un año más su condición de número uno en esta competición. Supone el tercer campeonato consecutivo para Audi.

Los primeros puestos de la clasificación general del Campeonato Alemán de Turismos se presentaban muy apretados. Scheider, campeón del DTM en 2008, era el favorito para alzarse con la victoria en la última carrera de la temporada y el alemán no ha fallado.

El segundo puesto que ha conseguido en Hockenheim ha sido suficiente para sumar los puntos necesarios para renovar su título de campeón del DTM y poner a Audi en la historia, al ser el primer constructor que desde la creación de éste en 1984, se alza con el título por tercera vez consecutiva.

Back in August, I faced one of the hardest decisions of my life: whether or not to sell my car.  My 2007 white Audi A4 was my pride and joy.  It was the first thing I bought for myself (by myself) out of college.  I remember walking out of the Audi dealership with the keys to my new bundle of joy in complete amazement that I could buy something like that without having someone call my parents or something.  I was free to do what I want, and that I did.

Driving her never got old.  She was always so good to me through the months of rain, snowy roads, and Seattle hills.  Better yet, she treated my clients as if they were her own, never breaking down and always performing at a top rate when I took them out.  I wouldn’t consider myself an overly materialistic person, but I felt good in this car.  I mean real good.

But over the summer we had come to the realization that we didn’t need two cars.  Since Blade used the bus to get to work (or as he refers to it, the “urine wagon”), we only drove his Jeep Liberty when we had to take the dog somewhere, or go to Portland, which ended up being only a couple times a month.  We figured if we downsized in the car department, we could upsize somewhere else, like in the vacation or fun department.

So on August 10th (RIP Audi), when I handed over the keys to my car to a nice massage therapist in Redomond, my heart skipped a quick beat.  Goodbye automatic windshield wipers, 6-speed manual transmission, and auto-adjusting headlights.  Goodbye 27 miles per gallon, all-wheel drive, and heated leather seats.   Hello 2005 Jeep Liberty.

My sweet new ride features dog hair covered cloth seats, a left blinker that blinks about 20x/second, and an incredibly sweet 12 miles per gallon!  And did I mention it has not six but ONE amazing speed!  Every time I go to drive it I double check to make sure I have my granny panties on, just so I’m prepared for when I max out at 59 miles per hour on the highway.

Don’t get me wrong; it was ultimately my decision to get rid of my car in an effort to save some money.  Not to mention it is a big sacrifice on Blade’s part as well, which is much appreciated.  But the only thing “liberating” about driving this chunk of poo around town is going to bed knowing that I can split the car payment with the boyfriend since it’s currently our only (shared) vehicle.

I don’t think Liberty’s are horrible cars (pretty close), but I just don’t think they are meant for city driving.  I guess next time I’ll think twice before I give up my freedom for a Liberty.

Although it would be easier to keep the little Abarth 500’s turbo on the boil with a paddle shift auto I can’t help thinking it would be less fun. The Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari may look good and go well, but really? An auto on a super hot 500? Really? Really, really?
Oh well.

Ferrari’s own 458 took allot of the attention. It’s certainly prettier than the 430, more efficient than the 430 and quite a bit quicker (in standard form) than the 430. Who’s betting the new McLaren will be just as good though?

And now for a question.
Can you think of a single car that’s looked better post-facelift? I can’t. The Punto Evo certainly looked better pre surgery, pre-Evo badge. Kia’s Ceed (verging on the good looking) definitely looked better last year. Why do they do it?

Audi, terminally boring as they are, have released yet another sub niche car. Welcome in Audi A5 Sportback. The product of mixing A5 and A4 genealogy, we have Audi’s answer to royal style genetic barrel scrapping. How long before Audi’s product children become disfigured and stupid is anyone’s guess…

From the ridiculous to the sublime, I’m gonna go out on a whim and say the Lambo Reventon Cabriolet is better looking than the coupe. Somehow it just fits better. Seeing it in the flesh (if I’m lucky enough) could change my mind, but really, even the Reventon is irrelevant. What I’m really waiting for is next years Mercielago replacement. My eyes are watering in anticipation just thinking about it.

From the sublime to the sober, it can be said with certainty that EV’s or electric vehicles dominated this year’s show. Audi unveiled what amounted to corporate bullshit mock-up pictures of an EV R8. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great idea, but drawings do not a show car make. Much more promising was Ford and Volvo’s electric Focus and C30. Indeed neither showcased impressive figures but what they do show is that at long last Ford is on the road to electrification.

Albeit with the conventional drive-train, Mercedes also showed its new electric car. The new Gullwing will get full EV status by 2012 but in the mean time it stands as easily the best looking car Merc have made for ten, possibly thirty years. It maybe unashamedly retro but the Gullwing was right first time in the 50’s. No need to argue with that.

All of this though, all of this pales into insignificance. All of this is just the turning of cogs in the march towards consumer ideals. What’s the best news of the show? What mattered to me most?

La firma de los cuatro aros ha decidido presentar nuevos motores para sus modelos A3 y A4 durante el Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Frankfurt. Continúa en la línea de añadir motorizaciones a la gama existente. Hace escasos días, la alemana presentó un motor 3.0 TSI para su modelo S5 Sportback, que ofrece nada despreciable cantidad de 333 cv con un consumo mixto homologado en 9,7 litros a los cien.

Pero vayamos por partes. El nuevo propulsor del A3 continúa la tendencia actual de incorporar motores de baja cilindrada con turbo. La denominación de la nueva mecánica será 1.2 TSI. Se trata de un motor de 1,2 litros que genera 105 cv y realiza el 0-100 km/h en 11,1 segundos para la versión de 3 puertas, y 11,3 segundos para la versión Sportback -5 puertas-. Ambas versiones tendrán una velocidad máxima de 190 km/h y un consumo de 5,5 litros a los 100 kilómetros.

Tanto el A3 como el A3 Sportback, con motorización 1.2 TSI, comenzarán a comercializarse en los primeros meses de 2010.

Vayamos ahora con el Audi A4. La nueva motorización de denominará 3.0 TDI Clean Diesel Quattro. Su revolucionario sistema de escape conseguirá que sus emisiones se reduzcan bastante. Esta nueva motorización cumple con los requisitos de la normativa Euro 6, que comenzará a ser obligatoria a partir del año 2014. Para la versión de 4 puertas, el consumo homologado se sitúa en 6,7 litros a los 100. La versión Avant penaliza ligeramente el consumo, situándose este en 6,8 litros cada 100 kilómetros recorridos.

El nuevo propulsor del A4 contará con una transmisión automática de 6 velocidades que permitirá a esta berlina de Audi alcanzar los 100 kilómetros por hora en 6,2 segundos. La versión familiar será un poco más lenta, necesitando una décima más para alcanzar los 100. En ambas versiones del A4, la velocidad será capada por un dispositivo electrónico a los 250 kilómetros por hora.

A warm Monday afternoon, the sun being as wild as it can be, and the day happened to be my Birthday as well.

I wanted to try out some of the crazy things that I had fantasized about… And I decided to test drive the Audi A4. I chose the Old Mahabalipuram Road, popularly known as the OMR in Chennai, a perfect route to take for a powerful car as the Audi A4. My experience with the car was mind blowing and that’s what I have tried to capture in my first blog!

I drive my Innova down to the AUDI showroom and surprisingly, it was unlike what I expected to see, i.e., bad approach with the entry dug up and no place to park my dear old car. The sales personnel at the counter was unassuming and in traditional Indian clothes to my surprise, as I had expected a girl in business suite and accented English. It was a pleasant surprise and she did a great job trying to be very helpful and organized the test drive for me.

The car, I must say is a treat to the eye. When you see it on the road, it has an amazing road presence and will steal anyone’s heart in the first sight. From the front exterior, the A4 looks awesome with sheepish looking stylish bi-xenon headlamps, the durable single frame radiator grille, with Audis symbol of four overlapping rings. In the rear end, it flaunts a wrap-around tail lights that look awesome and the sedan for sure is one of the best in glamour and comfort.

The interior of the sedan has been given a classy finish with leather surfaces and soft touch materials. Ambient lighting in the cabin adds to the glamour. Seats of this car are well-structured and covered with quality leather and are large and comfy. The LCD is positioned on the top of the stylish device sheet, which gets a smooth wooden trim.

The disappointment was that only 4 people could be seated comfortably including the driver as the A/C vent at the back would make it uncomfortable for the fifth passenger. The sedan also has individual temperature control for driver and the co-passenger in the front, which is a great feature. Audi’s famed Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a 40:60 front/rear split makes sure that all the horses are headed in the intended direction. . The engine’s wide power band allows the car to pull hard and strong almost all the way to the redline mark.

The torque on hand makes the car react like it has the power of all the racehorses in the country pulling you out of the gates every time you stomp on the throttle pedal. It’s what makes it growl past the 100kph mark in just 6.7 seconds. I was a little shy to press the pedal so hard and the test driver who came with me demonstrated the amazing power of the car, which literally brought my heart to my mouth. Acceleration is effortless. It will roll around town all day, and all it takes is a simple touch of the throttle to send the needle arcing north, on the dial. Keep your foot down and it’ll fly past the 160kph mark in a brisk 15 to 16 seconds. The best part is how the car expresses this aggression in a cool manner. Gearshifts are smooth and the gearbox is pretty accommodating and the automatic feature as well as the speed lock ensures that you have better moments in the car while you go for long drives.

Some of the features that left me amazed are the foldable backseats that open out into the boot and offering a fully stretched bed and the water gun that protrudes out on the press of a button to clean the headlamps. This engine is very smooth and quiet when you are not being silly with the throttle. Happily, none of this is at the expense of the ride and the Audi rides comfortably and does a good job of making the passengers raise above the road.

I wish the pricing was a bit more compatible for the Indian wallet, but am still amazed by the fact that though it costs more in the Indian market, than what it sells globally, there is a good demand for these high end vehicles. But for its sports-car performance, diesel economy, four seats and a large boot, you won’t feel the need to complain.
