In this week’s episode of Top Gear, the boys built their own car, a guest drove round the track and they performed a test of an Audi and a Chevrolet.

First off, the guest. I had no idea who this guy was, but apparently he is in some Twilight movie that is quite popular. His name is Michael Sheen, and really, that’s all I know about him. Other than he was in Frost/Nixon and does a good impersonation of Tony Blair, he is also very quick around the track. Even though he didn’t seem to be taking the correct line or driving very smooth, he somehow managed to eek out a lap that was very impressively fast. I believe that the whole lap was won in the second to last corner, where he entered at an unbelievable pace that I have never before seen. Maybe more stars should use that tactic.

In the car test, Clarkson had an Audi R8 V10 on track. He said it was amazingly quick, and it should be. The thing has a Lamborghini V10 in the back that pumps out 520 hp, but it also costs about $150,000. And it doesn’t even look that much different from the V8, except for the little V10 badge on the arches and those horrible looking wheels. Really, those wheels are horrendous and I’m surprised they were approved. Overall, the car sounds good, looks good and goes really fast; but not as fast as the Chevy Corvette ZR1. Though these two cars may not seem like direct competitors, they are actually closer than you might think. For one thing, the Vette has a supercharged V8 that pumps out a ridiculous 638 hp and 604 ft lbs of torque. This means that it is faster than the Audi through the quarter mile and has a higher top speed. It is also surprisingly faster around a track, though you really do have to work at it to make it fast. Also, the Corvette costs only $107,000, and that is a bargain for the performance that you get. However, the Audi is, of course, put together better, will last longer, is faster in the real world, looks better and isn’t made of plastic. Plus, Corvettes have some of the worst seats in the business for being a sports car. Hell, my Subaru has sportier seats that that thing. In the end, the Vette blitzed the Audi around the track, even though it was damp as well. I can’t imagine how fast that thing would be if it had actually been dry.

In the third segment, the boys took a look at building their own electric car and posed the question, “How hard can it be?” turns out, it’s really hard. With Hammond on the chassis, May on the motors and Clarkson (the useless sod) on the body, their work all came together to create Geoff. It turned out to be a big box with a TVR chassis and two batteries for power. The top speed of Geoff was a paltry 10 mph and, as everyone should have seen coming, the boys got into trouble when they clogged up streets, caused slow downs on motorways and eventually left the car alone where it rolled down a hill and into a tree. But that wasn’t the end of the car. They came back in the second half of the segment and remade Geoff as the Thrust Eagle Hammerheadi… or something like that. Anyway, the basic car was exactly the same, with a new bumper and more batteries. They then took the car to the UK proving grounds and put it through its paces. They smashed it into a wall, put it in the side impact machine and performed a drag race with it against tough competition. The car, amazingly, passed all of the tests with flying colors and was given to the auto reviewers at Autocar so that they could test it. Turns out that it actually sucks.

Next week it sounds like they will be making rally cars or something and be figuring out which car company has made the greatest number of brilliant cars. Also, flying caravans; so stay tuned.

The 2009 Seattle Auto Show

This was my first Seattle Auto Show. I really did not know what to expect, so I was going in with an open mind. I was really excited to see the Fisker Karma. I have read so many things about the car and seeing one in person was one of the main reasons why I wanted to go to the Auto Show. I dragged Sophia along and sort of made it my date day. I told her if she went with me I would take a full day of Christmas shopping with her. Sophia was great at the car show as she would jump in cars and tell me what she liked. Of course I would tell her at times Sophia you will never get that car. I think it was really hard for her when I told her that marrying a Gamblin that her chances of getting a Volvo or Audi or slim to none.

What I was so excited and shocked to see at the show was a Cadillac Converj. I could not believe it. I just wrote a lengthy blog on the Cadillac Converj as General Motors just announced that they will be putting the concept into production. It was great to see the car in person. I was a little disappointed not to see a CTS coupe, I thought for sure they would have one. Seeing the CTS Sport Wagon in person was great as well as I have blogged about that car as well.

I got to see my first Buick Lacrosse in person and actually sit in the seats. I am very excited with the direction Buick is heading. Of course I was praying a miracle would happen and a Buick Regal would be there. I thought I would never say that Buick has a great upcoming line up of young and aggressive vehicles.

The Chevrolet Exhibit was huge and you could tell that they were searching how to fill it. I understand that importance of having your vehicles there but an auto show is an auto show. I was really surprised to see a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept there. I had to explain to Sophia that was the car in Transformers 2 where they could have made an amazing car chase vs the Audi R8 but it lasted 10 seconds during the movie. I also liked how they lined up the Corvette’s all in a row. It started with the Stingray concept to the Corvette ZR1, Corvette Z06 and then the Corvette Grand Sport.

Other vehicles that were nice to see in person where the Porsche Panamera, Cadillac SRX, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Infiniti G37 and the whole Audi exhibit.

Now, it’s not quite a video, look closely and you’ll notice the wheels aren’t moving, so they probably just took an image and then recorded the sound. It’s worth watching because of that sound though, it sounds magnificent. I’m quite looking forward to this project. Just wish someone could pull off a twin-turbo R8 V10, but if Audi had problems with that, then I suspect everyone else will too.

Although this blog has become mostly about Formula One, that wasn’t what I set out to do with it. Well, now, after many posts about F1, I have a new topic (although it also involves F1). A few months ago, I was in a little principality you may have heard of called Monaco. This is a place of glitz and glamour and the cars and the city did not disappoint. I arrived there on a day that started out raining extremely hard, but as we pulled into the principality, the skies began to clear and the sun briefly shone through. The main reason that I wanted to go to Monaco was to walk the Formula One track that has become so famous. You may have watched it on TV, seen it in a movie or even played it in a video game, but unless you go there, you cannot believe how close to the buildings these guys get to drive. The second reason I wanted to go to Monaco was to see all the great cars these super wealthy people drive. As the day started with that aforementioned rain, I was not expecting too much, but I was surprised at what I did see.

We parked waaaaay up at the top of some hill that I probably couldn’t even find again. Luckily, we had a GPS system with us and it really came in handy. As I said, we parked way up the hill, as Monaco is sort of built into the side of a mountain (or at least some very tall hills). This leads to the city being a bevy of apartments, all built right on top of one another. Another thing this leads to is lots of stairs; thousands of them, in fact. However, we had another stroke of luck in that we parked near an elevator. Because the town is built so vertically, they have elevators that you can use to go up and down throughout the city to get to your destination. This not only saves time, it keeps you from killing yourself trying to climb up all those stairs. As it happened, we came down an escalator that opened up onto a street with a view directly toward the harbor. And again, as luck would have it, this street also contained the Formula One store and the Ferrari dealership. How fortuitous is that?

Obviously, I had to check both of them out. First, we took a trip inside the store. This place has everything…almost. Other than an actual car being inside the store, they had helmets, suits, an engine, exhausts, wheels and models galore! The walls were lined with models and hats and actual racing suits. I have been in other Formula One stores before, and though the one in Toronto comes close, this one is right in the heart of the action and is the place to go if you want some great merchandise. I will say that the one in Toronto has a very awesome Ayrton Senna helmet, but this one in Monaco is actually in Monaco! You can’t go wrong with that. I wish I had taken pictures of the inside, but I never thought to do so. I have this one of the outside, and the address is 15, Rue Grimaldi, should you ever be in the neighborhood. Originally, I wanted to get a car model or something that would be very Monaco-ish from the store (like a Michael Schumacher Ferrari F1 car), but all of the stuff they had – surprise, surprise – was really expensive. I ended up looking around the store and just taking it all in and then leaving to go explore the town with my dad.

The next stop was the Ferrari dealership just down the street, toward the harbor. This store had pretty much everything, bar an Enzo. Outside, in the rain, was a new California, a 599 GTB, a couple of 360s and even a rare (in that it didn’t sell very well) 456. Inside the showroom was a 430 spider as well as an F430 Scuderia. This car is unbelievable to look at and the interior is pure racing car. Welds out in the open, no carpets, upgraded seats, Alcantara all over the place; a true beast of a car. I snooped around here for a bit and then we moved on down toward Port Hercule.

Port Hercule is the port that is so famous because of all of the gigantic yachts in the harbor during the grand prix. These yachts in these photos are just little things compared with what shows up on that weekend. It really is amazing that there are so many wealthy people out there who can not only live in Monaco, but be able to still afford to eat, let alone own a boat that is larger than my entire house!

Of course, right next to the port is the front straight of the actual track. Right on the street that all the cars drive on you can see the grid positions where they line up every year. It’s an amazing thing that an entire city/country can be shut down just for a bunch of cars to drive at ludiculous speeds through the town. At the corner of the first turn, called St. Devote, there is a large statue of a car drifting through that turn. Then it is up the hill toward the casino and the square. This hill is so much steeper than it appears on the television, it’s hard to get across in pictures, but it is like walking up stairs without the benefit of steps. And when you get to the top of the hill, it is a completely blind left turn that seems to go on forever, until you get into Casino Square.

And what a square! If you love to watch cars, this is one of the very best places in the world to see supercars up close and personal. There are two good reasons for this. The first is that the casino attracts many high rollers of course, but the other reason is that the Hotel de Paris is right next door. This is where high rollers stay, racing drivers sleep and celebrities frequent. Outside of the hotel, there were approximately 8 Bentleys waiting to take people wherever they wanted to go. And pulled up in front of the casino were multiple Porsches, Ferraris, an Aston Martin and an Audi R8. In fact, as I walked up to the Casino for the first time, I saw a convertible SLR McLaren leaving the scene. It is one of the many cars in the world that I wish I could have gotten a picture of, but, alas, I was not fast enough.

Going on from here, you take a right turn around the mirror in the middle of the square and head down the hill to Mirabeau. This is the corner where Lewis Hamilton crashed in qualifying for the 2009 GP. I took these pictures of the hairpin from his crash spot. Here you can see just how much of a drop in road height there is from the top of this spot to the bottom.

Once you get down there, you take a succession of quick right hand turns and enter the spectacular tunnel. I walked the entire track, and at the end of the tunnel, there was construction, but that didn’t stop me from walking out near the traffic and continuing on. Another car that I missed taking a picture of, mostly because I didn’t want to be hit by it, was the new Lotus Evora. Once you are down here, you are literally right next to the port again. While there are barriers blocking the cars from splashing into the ocean, or crashing into multi-gazillion dollar yachts, it is still only about five or 10 feet from the actual marina. Then it is a left around Tabac and then the quick piff-paff of the swimming pool. Once you are past the pool, you can see right down to the Rascasse restaurant and corner. This corner is famous for a couple of reasons. First, it is a famous restaurant, but also, it is where Michael Schumacher “lost control” of his Ferrari in trying to lock out pole for the 2006 race. Just about where this white van is sitting is where Schumi parked his car. SUCH HISTORY!

From here, the cars blast through Antony Noghes and back onto the start-finish straight. The lap is one of the coolest things you can do in Monaco, because it only takes a couple of minutes (barring any unforeseen stopping to ogle cars) and is a great way to get a sense of the history of the track and to feel just how close they actually come to buildings and spectators. We then took a look at the Automobile Club of Monaco. Since we were not members, we only went into the doorway to see the trophies and the names on the plaques, but behind one of the windows are three formula one engines for all to see.

Unfortunately, we did not spend the night in the city (expensive much?) and moved on. But before we did, I figured that since I would probably never be back to the city, I we should stop back at the Formula One store that we went in earlier. I already had something in mind that I wanted, and luckily, I got there just before they were about to close. In fact, about five minutes before they were about to close! I ran in the back and grabbed a hat. In all the years I have been watching Formula One I have never owned a Michael Schumacher hat, so I grabbed the final edition of his world title winning hats and took it up front. The woman that worked there was kind enough to answer my questions as well. The main one being, “Who is that in the picture?” She then rattled off names like Jarno Trulli, Sylvester Stallone, Sebastian Loeb and more that had all been pictured inside of the store. There were pictures of many people up there, all of them very famous racing drivers or celebrities. This store has a lot of history in it and should be on your list if you are a fan of motorsports and are in Monaco. With this track now crossed off my list, I have been to seven Formula One circuits around the world. Monaco is a beautiful place to visit, and should certainly be on your list of places to visit if you love F1.

We think the R8 V10 (and its V8 “little” brother) is great, by the way. One might make the argument that its reputation has lost a bit of its luster as of late (in the face of stiff competition and an increasingly jaded and ADD audience), but we feel it deserves a vigorous defense. No, it’s not the F430 Scuderia, but quite frankly, we think that comparison is stupid- the latter car also costs nearly twice as much. We place a high premium on credibility here, and when you have race car drivers like Randy Pobst singing the R8’s praises, well- we’re convinced.

In general, the Bulgogi Brothers sweat ‘realistic’ cars more than exotics, but even to the jaded car enthusiast, it’s hard not to be impressed by this array. A winding mountain road. A bevy of supercars, if one that has a notable absentee (whither Maranello?) and runs a wide (and curious) gamut:

the “entry level” player (base R8)

the debonair GT cruiser (the Aston)

the hardcore track athlete (GT3 RS)

the hardcore track athlete on performance-enhancing drugs (Gallardo Superleggera)

and last but not least, the peerless Veyron

Ideally, we would have preferred the V10 to the V8 R8 and the Vantage V12 to the DB9 (not to mention the inclusion of the Scuderia), but we suppose we can make do with what we have here…

No rant today (gasp!) but I want to talk about cars that I have always dreamed about, in my sleep or even when walking along a busy shopping area, these are the things that you always want and what keeps you working day in and out, of course with the family being the highest priority. These are the cars that I will probably never review because I am probably not fit to judge these as I will get extremely biased. So lets start shall we?

Audi R8
Engine: 4.2L V8 / 5.2L V10
0-62mph: 4.2 sec / 3.9 sec
Price (SG): $451,000
Price (UK): £76,385 – £103,645
Top Speed: 187mph /198mph
Cool Meter: 85%
Practicality: 80%

The best thing Audi has made since the original Quattro

The thing is a beauty, look at all the design of the car is not one of the supercars you drive out once every 2 months, it is actually a car that you can drive out everyday, this has one of the best handling because of the 4WD. It is one of the most complete cars ever, with the V10 version out as well it has the mix of extreme power and handling, if the track in Singapore is ever made, this will be the car to drive. Also it has alot of headroom for such a low car, it is quite a wonderful car to behold and you have quite a decent boot at the front. It is not that loud as well when you go flat out (not that you will actually go that fast) It is the one car you would buy if you want a supercar you can use daily, because originally the choice ever since Honda stopped the production of the NSX (which was a pity) and the Porsche 911 became the default supercar that you can drive everyday because you can see out of it unlike most supercars, in the Audi is a great car if you can spare the cash just to drive this wonderful piece of machinary.

Ferrari 599
Engine: 6.0L V12
0-62mph: 3.7 sec
Price (SG): $1,150,000
Price (UK): £196,950 – £201,950
Top Speed: 205mph
Cool Meter: 100%
Practicality: 50%

It is like the hottest girls in the same room...with a V12 engine

First of all, it is a Ferrari, it makes it automatically cool although it is not really beautiful compared the other Ferraris like the Enzo or the 612 Scaglietti which are both really beautiful. Although with this car you will need to have balls made of carbonfiber and a heart of stone to park this a the side of the road, because it is almost guarenteed that it will be scratched…and badly. God it is fast as well…it will go from 0-100mph in just over 7 seconds and the sound of the V12 is one of the sounds you need to hear in your life before you die. It is kinda like bungee jumping. The ride inside is beautifully made as well. Inside the gearbox is a semi auto where you touch the flappy paddles and it engages the clutch, shifts up and disengages it very quickly and there are LED lights on the steering wheel to tell you when to change gears. If you are even given the chance to drive it even for a few minutes you have to, it is an absolute must. Although it is not the Ferrari I want, I would want the new 458 Italia…that is a really wicked car.

No reason why you wouldn't want one

Aston Martin DB9
Engine: 6.0L V12
0-62mph: 4.7 sec
Price (SG): $706,000 – $750,000
Price (UK): £113,950 – £128,653
Top Speed: 187mph
Cool Meter: 90%
Practicality: 45%

It would make a geek look like coolest person ever

This is one of the wonders of the world because it is just a cool car that nobody should not want, it would make a nerd with buck teeth and super thick glasses attract the most beautiful woman ever. When you start it up the V12 will sound like you are already speeding like a madman, start this up next to a cop car and he will book you for speeding. Well you might have only 2 seats and you will not bring this anywhere but to do some cruising or to a reception it will draw all the attention to it. There downside? Well you will end up in the petrol station almost everywhere, because this thing drinks fuel like it was sports drink during a football match. So if you have to ask, is it good? Yes…it is very good and it is very cool.

Maserati GranTurismo
Engine: 4.2L V8
0-62mph: 5.2 sec
Price (SG): $428,000
Price (UK): £78,150
Top Speed: 177mph
Cool Meter: 95%
Practicality: 70%

If this car looks any better, I would sleep with it

It is one of the most comfortable Maserati in the mortal world and it has nice seats and accurate steering. It is fast, not extreme fast but it is normally fast and it looks like one of the most beautiful car ever. This car is super cool, like if you stab yourself with a liquid nitrogen pipe and completely fill yourself up, you will be as cool as this car. Guess what though, there is a 30gb hard drive inside with a awesome sat nav, like you really want to listen to it. 4 people can go into it and get out of it happily although head room for the back is a issue but it is nothing that will prevent you from stepping inside. I am quite a fan of 4 door cars rather than 2 doors with back seats but this one is like placing the cherry on the cake, and why not? The thing that ruins the style of this car is the license plate at the front, because the front is so beautiful and the license plate is just making the car look ugly.

Lamborghini Reventón
Engine: 6.5L V12
0-62mph: 3.5 sec
Price (SG): Not available
Price (UK): £800,000+ (sold out)
Top Speed: 210mph
Cool Meter: 100%
Practicality: 50%

It is like having the girl of your dreams...it entices you by looks

This is one of the most awe inspiring car I have ever seen in my life, the Lamborghini Reventón (pronouced Reh-ben-ton) is the car that is based off the F22 Raptor plane that is being used by the US Air Force and it is just full of things you want, like LED brake lights, the scissor door, the giant fans at the radiator behind the car to cool the engine, the carbon fiber rims is shaped like a giant fan as well to suck in cold air and cool the brakes so that they don’t overheat, even the fuel filler cap! If I had that on my car I would go ballistic. The inside of the car has the dash with a thin film transistor LCD which is like your HD television set. The options there are car mode, where it is a normal dash or AIRCRAFT SETTING! Where they show you things like the balance of your car to the ground etc etc. It is a truely amazing thing and this is what Lamborghini need to do…make more of cars like thsese because while modifications to the Gallardo and the (soon-to-be-extinct) Murc, they need to capture the public’s hearts with a car like this and even though I know I will never own one because only 20 are made and they are all sold out, at least I am assured that Lamborghini have not lost thier touch in the creativity department. This, therefore, is the car of my dreams.

Squeezer is a car blog, but when a subject combines passion and high tech we’re actually not t

Squeezer is a car blog, but when a subject combines passion and high tech we’re actually not that far removed from our editorial line.

And high tech side, the new Audi R8 V10 (official name: R8 5.2 FSI quatro) is rather well endowed, because this car except that the mind is directly derived from the expertise of Audi Competition is also a showcase all that is best in advanced technology in automotive design.

So with impatience mingled emotion of a child on Christmas morning that I accepted the invitation Audi [1] to spend a whole day on a road racing (and surrounding) [2 ] to test the latest model in the range: the Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro, a monster 525 hp reached 316 km / h peak (only circuit on some German autobahns and Playstation course).

The passion has no age, just a price …

Not part of the club of the privileged can afford cars to over 150,000 euros, I found myself a bit like an alien from a string of VIP owners of Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley (and often even the 4 both) that the only budget car must match the annual GDP of Burkina Faso. All in great simplicity and a friendly atmosphere, because on one hand the rich among them have much left to prove, and secondly everyone was there for the same reason: the passion for the beautiful Mechanical and thrills.

And next thrill, we were served: Audi does things big, and not being accustomed to this kind of special day, I was surprised by the relaxed atmosphere and especially the absolute confidence of instructors mark, which soon after our arrival and only a short briefing on the program that we expected, we have directly allowed us to install the wheel of one of … 15 Audi R8 these for our pleasure.

The Audi R8 V10 as if you were there.

The day was organized into 4 workshops: financial control of the beast on a portion excluding specific circuit with random obstacles to avoid slippery conditions (frost) almost always causes a spin if you were not totally focused (just double salto-driving such a monster is a privilege I will not soon forget), then a detailed presentation of the car in the conference room by an Audi driver consultant, with many a technical drawings, cutaways and 3D animations . A brief passionate about technology and especially the dynamics of a car, mass transfer, the chassis balance and other considerations for automotive geek. Then, on the track for some laps in, with a pilot instructor who, after we have shown the markers trajectories allows us to push the beautiful into a corner ( “Go, gas, thoroughly, spitting made the 500 hp! To you, enjoy it … “). Finally, after lunch (without wine or any alcoholic beverage, which is apparently not always the case in this kind of day), the highlight of the day, finally, for me at least: a walk of about twenty miles driving the R8 V10 freely on county region surrounding the circuit. Nothing like that end up in real terms in the movement to judge the qualities of self and ability to blend naturally into the traffic.

At the wheel of an Audi R8 on the roads.

In this particular exercise, the Audi R8 is a disconcerting ease: docile, extremely comfortable for a super-sport category, it is led fingertips like any self-how, in a silence heavy sedan, just lulled by the gentle hum of the V10 that meets any of your requests without any latency. Add to that a driving position just perfect in the semi-bucket dressed like the interior, with fine Nappa leather hand-sewn, one sound Bang & Olufsen 12 HP for a strictly 2-seater cockpit, and get this unique sensation to levitate into something absolutely unique, a fascinating journey. Discover Europe’s roads at the wheel of this type of vessel must be an exceptional experience.

It was for the cushy side: the comfort of the Audi R8 would almost tend to make you forget that you have under your foot cavalry over 500 horsepower, which puts this car in the supercars of exception: series cars exceeding 500 horsepower and 300 km / h in peak are in fact not many in this world (besides, I do not know).
Accelerations and feel … bike!

And just when you press the accelerator pedal, you enter directly into another dimension: I had every opportunity to push the animal up red zone (over 8,000 rpm) and acceleration is simply breathtaking You literally sticky seat, with a bonus whiplash every gear change by using the box R Tronic paddle wheel, so Formula 1. The mounted system are hallucinating, you leave the cozy softness of driving alone to enter a world of absolute brutality. The sensations obtained through this type of self are those that are generally known only to riding a motorcycle high cylinder with which the car category of the Audi R8 V10 are the only ones that can compete in performance, since they can go from 0 to 100 km / h in under 4 seconds and 0 to 200 km / h in under 13 seconds. A question of safety and power to weight ratio (the chassis hull of the Audi R8 is a direct result of the competition and made all aluminum). All in optimal security conditions, as long as you still possess some experience in the taming of the wild type, because Audi has put all its knowledge at the service of this security: technology Quattro (four wheel drive) various driver aids (traction control, etc …) and especially braking perhaps even more impressive than the acceleration: when you press the pedal you are literally glued to the road (and your seat belt), all stability in unperturbed, provided you know how many still hold your wheel.
Acoustics chic.

A word about the sound of the engine, which is a symphony by itself, expressing both strength and quality design at Audi fashion: the growls the V10, which again reminds one more of a motorcycle that of a supercar when it goes into the towers, is completely captivating, and for good reason, since it was specifically working with a team of acousticians Audi, which also occur on each sound emitted by all models range. If the lights or closing the doors of an Audi produce these sounds is no accident but the result of extensive acoustic surveys, the result must necessarily raise the quality and serenity.

The Audi R8, a car special to ordinary usage.

With the R8, that is the V8 already available since a couple of years or the V10 just hit the market, Audi has managed a bet that Porsche was only so far with the 911: to offer a car whose exceptional comfort, reliability and ease of driving also make it usable on a daily basis. Moreover, as a Smart is a strict two-seater, but his chest is bigger than a Smart

I made several videos throughout the day with my Creative Vado and my compact camera, which I confided to my regularly brave passengers of the moment (other guests and instructors) so they can capture those extraordinary moments when I myself was driving. Here is a montage of the best moments, including the final laps at a rate high enough, when we had the machine under control.

* * *
* * *
