So we had to take my sister back to University the other day which was going to take about 3 hours to get there. So I used my time by photographing some special cars on the way. This was a great opportunity to get a bit of car photography practice and you never know what you’ll find on the M6. I know I could only really photograph with the windows shut and the windscreen did have a few bird droppings on them but it’s still good to try and do what car photographers do. Audi Star Creation, a regional fashion design competition, identifies and nurtures emerging Asian fashion designers. First held in 2010, it’s an event of the annual Asia Fashion Exhange (AFX); the competition is open to aspiring designers between 16 and 35 years who are Asian citizens. Audi Star Creation is spearheaded by the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFf) and sponsored by Audi Singapore and supported by fashion house, F J Benjamin.

Temasek Polytechnic student from Apparel Design and Merchandising, Haziq Putra‘s “Pursuit to Freedom” took one of the competition’s three top spots. In addition, the 21-year-old also won the Audi Young Designer Award (AYDA), which is given to the winner whose creation best embodies the Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression.

Haziq’s menwear collection featured hand-dyed batik, from which he created a digital print. He also incorporated two distinct Kelantan icons – the Wau Bulan, a giant kite , and the ikan pari, or stingray.

“I thought the collection was very original and I like the fact you could see his design concept of the stingray flow right through. He was creative but not too over the top with progressive design, much like Audi. At the same time, the collection is very well made and seems to be market-ready. I can even see myself in some of his pieces!” commented Jeff Mannering, Audi Singapore’s Managing Director on Haziq’s design.

26-year-old Vietnamese, Vu Ta Linh won the judges over with “The Contour”, a womenwear collection inspired by the Vietnamese rice terraces Ruong Bac Thang in Sapa. Linh graduated from Hanoi London College of Fashion Studies in July 2012, and uses stitching, weaving and embroidery to capture the curves and waves of the Vietnamese heritage.

Bagging the third and final spot was 24-year-old Sun Yi Jin from China, whose womenwear collection drew on the Chinese costumes and handicraft techniques of the 56 ethnic groups in China.

Commenting on her win, judge David Wang, the Vice President of the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore, said, “What impressed us most was the fact that the collection draws so strongly on history yet manages to come across as modern. That is exactly what we were looking for with this year’s InspirAsian theme – a designer who was able to dig deep into his/her own culture but emerge with something that would fit right in on the streets of New York or Tokyo.”

Each of the three winners will get $10,000 in cash from Audi Singapore, an internship with leading fashion retailer F J Benjamin and the chance to launch a capsule collection at Audi Star Creation 2014.

What also sets this app apart is that it does not require a continuous mobile signal. I mention this because around the time that many of us were holidaying there, SEAT were proudly flying the flag for Spain, as the country’s largest home-grown car company. Chances are, if you were in Marbella in 1996, you may well have got behind the wheel of SEAT’s city car of the same name, via Avis or Europcar. The Marbella was a re-skinned Fiat Panda which benefited, and I use the term loosely, from a gaudy paint job and oversized side decals, and was the automotive embodiment of the Brit abroad. It wasn’t a good car, but it’s earnestness, combined with the sheer volume of the things parked along hot Spanish streets in the height of Summer, made it something of an icon.

The Marbella’s lifespan (1986-1998) was an important period for SEAT. In 1986, the VW group acquired a 51% majority stake in the company; four years later, the organisation took full ownership of SEAT.

For the first two years of Volkswagen‘s ownership, it was hard to see any of their DNA in SEAT’s cars, the Italdesign first-generation Ibiza, which had first appeared almost a decade earlier soldiered on, as did the spartan Marbella. Then, in 1993 came a breakthrough, with the unveiling of the second-generation Ibiza. This was the first car developed entirely under VW’s watchful eye, and it showed. The model benefited from a quality interior, the same accomplished range of engines as VW’s Polo, and a classy exterior look, that featured smoked rear tail lights. The Ibiza was also available as a saloon, badged ‘Cordoba’, which though sold in the UK, was predominantly developed for “The continent”.

Throughout the ’90′s, the Ibiza continued to sell-well, but SEAT were still very much a left-field choice for motorists at the time, what they really need was a car to catapult them into the mainstream, and at the close of the first millennium  that’s exactly what they served up.

The ‘Leon’ was launched in 1999, as a rival to Ford’s lauded and ground-breaking Focus and VW’s classless mark 4 Golf, both launched a year earlier. The Leon’s appeal lie in the fact that it boasted Golf levels of quality, but with much sharper, coupe-like looks, and a price tag that was around £1500 cheaper than the equivalent Golf model. It was a huge hit for SEAT, who could now be seen as a mainstream manufacturer, but with added sportiness and exclusivity – not to mention a killer price tag.

SEAT built on the Leon’s success with the Arosa city car, which it extensively revised in 2000 to fit it’s new three-part grille family look, the design evocative of the wingspan of a fighter jet.

Today, SEAT are at the top of their game. The firm launched the third-generation Leon earlier this year, to a clean sweep of praise from the British motoring press – in fact some commentators proclaimed that the new Leon is better than the mark 7 Golf, upon which its’ based – this writer is inclined to agree.

This begs a question. If SEAT is now producing cars that are better than their VW rivals, could the firm do reputational damage to Volkswagen? For me, the answer is no. The rich history enjoyed by VW has played a part in their brand perception among consumers today. Seat’s success is, ultimately VW’s success, because everyone knows who it is that has got them where they are today. VW has been canny in anchoring  the USP of each brand in their group’s portfolio – Skoda = value, Seat = sporty, Audi = luxury, and so on.

And now back to my opening gambit about Maureen’s holiday’s “on the continent”. I think the reason we don’t say this any more is because we’re all a lot better connected with one-another now. Spain doesn’t seem a particularly alien landscape to us any more than our village local does – indeed, we can have a free video-call with a friend there, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, at the drop of a hat. Seeing those hot Spanish streets aligned with rows of tinny, yellow-coloured Seat Marbella’s in all their Avis livery – that seems more alien to me now, than the fact that Spain’s biggest car manufacturer, is actually German.

This week’s assignment focuses on search engine marketing especially of the use of Google AdWords to create effective online advertising. Even though my experience with this technique is very limited, I tried my very best to find out which keywords could be used for my favorite brand – which is still – Audi.

How does Google AdWords work?
For everybody like me who knows the word AdWords and has some kind of ideas what it does, I will provide some information that will help to understand itself and the assignment I performed a bit better:
As we all know AdWords is a form of online marketing called keyword advertising. The ads itself can be seen on Google in front, at the right side and sometimes also at the bottom of the search results. AdWords appear when they fit content wise to the search enquiry or the related website. The advertiser makes use of certain keywords which describe the presented product or service. If someone enters this keyword or a correlated term in Google, he/she will be not only given the organic search results, but also matching AdWords ads. The advertiser himself is responsible for designing the keywords and the content. For a long-term marketing project or a short-term campaign, he/she has to indicate certain  keywords under which the self-created ads appear on Google. In comparison to the organic search results, but similar to print advertisements AdWords ads are not for free.

The best keywords to promote Audi
I performed an AdWord keyword search to find out which terms could be used by Audi to promote the brand via SEA. As Audi is a German company (and my Google settings are in German), I will chose Germany and the German language as a base for the analysis.
The search word “Audi” itself, is globally inquired 30.400.000 times each month – 5 million times in Germany in the same time frame. I think that is an enormous amount of occasions people want to get information about Audi-related content. Furthermore, Google gives situations what kind of keywords could be used according to the amount of monthly worldwide search enquiries. In my case, it suggests to incorporate names of competitor manufacturers like Ford, BMW and Mercedes, because these keywords are typed in on Google over millions of times as well. Probably, Audi could use these keywords when promoting own car models that could be compared with the ones by the competition. Moreover, it is noticeable that Audi is most often connected to certain models like Audi Q3 (450,000 monthly inquiries) or Audi A1 (368,000 inquiries). Thus, I believe it is valuable to use specific product names as keywords. Surprisingly, terms like “second-hand audi” are not that often used  – only 110.000 times each month, but still it is important by Audi to be found when a user types in “second-hand car”. Other more specific keywords like “Jahreswagen” (cars which can be bought by company employees at a discount and resold after one year), “tuning” or “convertible” are used frequently.

The (market)place to be
Another search with the keyword “car” made clear ,that next to certain brands many users look for automobile platforms to get information about cars and matching equipment. For example virtual car marketplaces, like the popular German autoscout24.de and mobile.de, are more than 5 million times typed in on Google. Therefore, I would advise Audi create advertisement with the same or similar terms to appear when users look for those sites. Furthermore, Audi could buy advertising space on the marketplace itself to make sure that potential car purchasers will think about the brand as well. Additionally, terms like “equipment”, “test”, “tuning” or “forum” are related and important keywords when searching for cars.

Audi, what else …
Additionally, Audi could use other not car related keywords to promote the brand. As the company is supporting several events like winter sport or movies, special ad campaigns could be designed which appear when users are looking for the Ski Weltcup, German Touring Car Masters or the new Iron Man movie.

(The Dissection of The Soul In Three Parts)

Part 1

Bethlehem, Pennsylvannia-How much would you pay for the soul of a 5 million year old man?  10 million dollars?  20 million?  100 million?  What about a billion dollars?  10 billion dollars?  100 billion dollars?  A trillion dollars???

Would you give up the pinky finger on your left hand?  What about your right pineal gland?  Would you watch every episode of the television show Manimal?   Would you become a cannibal who injects himself with Dianabol?  Would you sell your children to a band of angry Saudis?  Would you trade in your mother for three broken down Audis?  Would you endure an hour-long attack from ravenous dogs?  Would you reprise Ray Milland’s role in the movie Frogs? Would you trade dentures with Martha Raye?  Would you spend Father’s Day with Marvin Gaye?  Would you elope with an antelope?  What about a cantaloupe?

Billionaire heiress Angelina Corpsegrinder did just that.  Corpsegrinder, the granddaughter of former President John F. Corpsegrinder, purchased the soul at a nearly incalculable price at an auction on Friday outbidding thousands of lustful members of the American aristocracy. Corpsegrinder now has, within her beady little hands, possession of the one object that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that God not only exists, but also intends us to hear his outrageous and inconsistent demands.

Encased in glass in case of loss, this abandoned soul sits in a vault, collecting interest at nearly 8 percent.  Corpsegrinder has had the soul examined by thousands of religious icons and hundreds of other idle idols of the breathing class.  Their findings all point to one inescapable fact, that people, given the correct amount of compensation and fearing for the devaluation of their name and the deflation of their credibility, will say anything to remain unforgotten by strangers.  That we are conspiring against all logic and pinning our dreams and hopes upon an empty vessel is not important, what is important is that the conspiracy continues to hold true no matter how vengefully its core fiction has been used.

Thousands have filed past a replica of this soul in the Museum of Spirit, Fellowship and Other Inane Cruelties.  For years, it was thought that this replica was the only soul alive in captivity.  Many believed that, in nearly every case, when one expired, the soul passed into another realm leaving only a husk of body in some embarrassing pose.  And teeth.  Now, thanks to the generous nature of those who possess most of the world’s resources, we can rest assured that a real soul exists.

The soul originally belonged to a Neanderthal named Arnold Mulligan.  In his haste to consume the flesh of a recently slaughtered pig, Mulligan’s soul fell out of his body and fell into a tar pit somewhere south of Tupelo, Mississippi.  After being discovered some years back, the soul was passed to different collectors in high stakes poker games.  It eventually fell into the clutches of former Presidential candidate Adali Stevenson and has languished in a coffee can in his basement since 1964.  But, that is not important.  Who needs chain of evidence when there isn’t even the evidence of a chain?

Finally, a pawnbroker from Jamaica, Queens named Arthur Leo Sclerosis slumped into the vault and examined the artifact.  It was elliptical.  No bigger than a marble.  It had been poked and prodded by the finest pokers and prodders on this planet.  Its verification had been peer reviewed by peers and reviewers who had all made tenure at the finest educational slaughterhouses on the planet.   They had stood in line for hours to see it, all seeking to be part of a truth that, as keepers of truth, they were free to invent.  Some of them, the rebels, tried to destroy it, but Plato had told them long ago that it couldn’t be destroyed, so they stopped.

Sclerosis didn’t care.  He was dying and had the freedom that only the truly condemned and utterly forgotten can ever gain.  His body, ravaged by disease and disrepair, crawled towards the altar upon which the soul had been placed.  He made several silly motions with his hands to confuse the guards into thinking he was part of a group of fiction providers larger than himself, then he dove face first into the case, shattering the shatterproof glass and freeing the soul from the most recent in its series of cells.

The alarms sounded.  Everyone on earth froze and locked their eyes upon him.  Were it destroyed, they’d have to go back to having faith in something implausibly stupid.  Were it destroyed, the whole edifice would plunge headlong into a nothingness of materials careening off one another and going nowhere in particular for an undetermined period of meaningless time.  Were it destroyed, they’d have to accept the possibility that God or whatever creative force begat us from Its stomach was cruel enough to simply leave us in the middle of an endless wilderness of despair with no map to get home.   Were it destroyed, they might look in the mirror and come face to face with a walking pile of animated flesh killing time between now and when its life functions had ceased.

“Please…we beg you!  Leave us at least the illusion of stability in this demented nightmare of an existence!!!!” they cried in unison.

He held it aloft for all to see.  “This,” declared Sclerosis “is nothing more than an M & M!!!!!”

He popped it into his mouth, chewed and swallowed.  He died at that moment, for no other reason than his heart stopped beating.

People were aghast!  So little truth had flashed before their eyes since religion adopted the game show format in the 1950s that this mockery of their very existence flung them into an orgiastic fit of rage.  Still…there was something to this.  After all, this was an experience they had just experienced.   An event.  A happening.  A thing.  They were all a part of it.  Suddenly and without warning, the guards draped an American flag over the former man’s lifeless body and hoisted him on their shoulders as if he had just scored the game-winning touchdown in a championship football game.

“HE………IS………..RISEN!!!!!”  they shouted in unison.

Everyone went back to work.

2012 saw Audi sweep the podium with a 1-2 (Team Phoenix and Mamerow Racing), and this season the boys from Ingolstadt have deployed their best line-ups to make sure they can bring it home again. Mercedes has some very good chances too with a couple of SLS GT3 fielded by Black Falcon (#9 and #10) and in general, given how hard the race is, any car boasting a strong line-up can’t be ruled out.

So Aston Martin has chances too with the #7 driven by Turner-Mücke-Simonsen-Lamy, as well as Bmw with the #19 Z4 GT3, Jörg Müller, Dirk Müller, Uwe Alzen and Augusto Farfus sharing the wheel. Oddly enough, the Brazilian driver (together with fellow Bmw racer Martin Tomczyk) will be flown to the ring on Sunday afternoon after performing his DTM duties at Brands Hatch, Audi doing the same with Mike Rockenfeller.
Last but not least, the #18 Manthey Racing Porsche 911 could also be part of the fight: they aren’t in the top class (SP7) but Olaf Manthey knows how to win this race and the line-up couldn’t be better: Lieb-Dumas-Luhr-Bernhard are the best factory drivers Porsche could provide.
