There has been a (not so) recent trend with hip-hop style music to take (or re-make) sound bytes from classic songs and insert them alongside modern rap-like lyrics. Sometimes this can be truly awesome such as with the Hill Top Hoods’ Nosebleed Section or Hard Road or the Audiobully’s Shot You Down. Though admittedly electronic has been sampling older work for as long as I can recall.

These songs take the old, mesh it with the new and create something unique.

Then there is Kanye West, only just heard of him the other day. Listening to Diamonds From Sierra Leone, I jumped to the conclusion he was some guy who’d gotten a once off arts grant to represent tone-deaf egotist minority group in the modern music industry.

Seems I was wrong.

This guy has been around for a while (hey hip-hop isn’t usually my thing) and for the entire time he’s been representing tone-deaf egotists with martyr complexes in the music industry.

Music aside; my god is this guy a douche-bag! So during the MTV Europe Music Awards, Kanye went onto the stage as the award was being presented for “We Are Your Friends” and argued that he should have won the award instead. Most recently during the young Taylor Swift’s crowning glory, best female video or somesuch, Mr. ‘I don’t need to respect you cause I’m wearing bling’ steals the mike. Way to go, bully some teenage girl because she’s white, and therefore has no feelings to hurt. Worse, it’s not the first time he’s injected unwanted opinion into these sorts of moments. This guy just likes to rain on other peoples parades.

I smell a cubic shit-tonne of douche-baggery. Not certain if that’s a cubic or imperial measurement….

Music included; my god is this guy a douche-bag! Take the old clip, meld it into your song and make something new. I get that, I respect that. Or you could do it Kanye style and take an old song in its entirety and use it to carry a few lame arsed lyrics you tack on as an afterthought.

Rude and apparently talentless (though admittedly I have a soft spot for Jesus Walks)…. Way to be a role model. Let’s let the image speak for my opinion here.

Al Gibbs aka Nebraska is not from Nebraska, but rather London, England. Why he chose the name is inconsequential, what is consequential though is that he makes great tunes. One of which is featured on his latest EP on Rush Hour and called The Other Side. All the tracks on this release are worth owning, but I choose to present this one here because it reminds me of an old favorite from way back in 2003, namely Face In A Cloud by Audio Bullys. Great sample based house funk, I think the Audio Bullys track samples Joe Cocker (I´m not sure though). I have no Idea what Nebraska sampled, but if anyone knows they should share the knowledge.

This has been on HurtYouBad for weeks now but i wanted to post it anyways, it’s the Audio Bullys tribute to the late London graffiti writer Vizo. To give you a bit of context, the lead singer from Audio Bullys was in GFS crew alongside Vizo.

Once I’d graduated from dj-ing with vinyl and CDs to using a  PC, I started using the Ableton Live software package. I’d been using a different software package that basically simulated two decks – you could even varispeed and ‘nudge’ mp3 files to mix them. That was okay, but it was quite limiting and not very good. I heard about Ableton Live, downloaded the demo, then bought a version of Ableton Lite off eBay (which I eventually upgraded to the full thing – a much cheaper route than buying the full package).

No longer did I have to worry about short intros and outros and mismatching beats, because I could re-edit my own versions of songs I wanted. And once I started saving loops and samples of my favourite parts of records, I could start remixing them from the bottom up in a live situation – using a drum loop from one place, bassline from anoter, an acapella from a third track, and so on. I added a midi controller to operate the volume and EQ levels for up to sixteen tracks simultaneously, and that was all I needed – I didn’t even need headphones because I had a  graphic representation of the song in front of me and could see the breakdowns etc and even mark where elements of a song began and ended.

Finally, I realised that I could also mix anything in 4/4 time very easily. With Ableton you set a beat marker at the start of a bar and one at the end, and then just tell it how long to take to get from one marker to the next. So if I had a record at 120bpm, I could simply set the master tempo for 125bpm (for example) and Ableton took care of the time-stretching and key – no more speeded up records sounding like Mickey Mouse!

The Shenanigans series of mixes was born out of a desire to see how much I could push myself using Ableton – whether I could mix rock, dance, hip-hop, r&b and pop as seamlessly as I could mix dance records together. This mix, Shenanigans 01, is my very first attempt at doing that. I deliberately picked as varied a selection as I could, so in this mix you have Ocean Colour Scene and The Sugarhil gang mixed together as an opening pair, and artists that feature later include Korn and Girls Aloud, Linkin Park and Elvis Costello, Deep Dish and Elvis Presley, and so on.

I’ve split the mix into different parts to make it easier to download and find your favourite bits later. You should download all eight parts, then play them in order with no gaps between the tracks in order to get the full effect. If you put them on your iPod or press then to a CD, make sure you don’t have gaps between the tracks!

The London-based act Audio Bullys have put together an incredibly infectious piece of electronica/dance punk with their new single “Gimme That Punk.” It is a fantastic piece of work, and has gotten decent airplay on UK music radio, including XFM London.

The video for the song was directed by longtome Clash associate Don Letts and features scenes shot all over London, including legendary punk mecca the 100 Club, the Battersea Power Station, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament.

Adoro Audio Bullys. A dupla faz um som meio… hooligan house! É que eles vêm daquela cena street eletrônica britânica, com uma remota influência de hip hop e um som bem encorpado. E o show deles é mais animado que aula de aeróbica!

Esta faixa é do próximo álbum, Sunday Night Fever, que sai dia 23 de junho pelo selo dos rapazes, o Vizo Records.

Could 2008 be the year that the world catches up with me and recognises the power of onions? Son of Rambow is doing very nicely at the UK box office at the moment, featuring a good oniony turn by Will Poulter as troublemaking Lee Carter, and all lovingly shot in the Hertfordshire of the mid 80s, which it manages to get fairly spot on, despite some of the slightly hyperreal detours.

And add to this a new ad from Transport for London warning about the dangers of being a tossrope behind the wheel which borrows heavily, or rather outright steals the entire premise from this earlier onion classic, the idea here being “Lose your licence and you’re just a kid again”. Is there no law about this? I know it’s essentially one kind of ad nicking off another, which happens all the time, but c’mon, what a cheek. There’s no amount of 50ps that could make up for it. At least it’s in a good cause and not selling cars or mobile phones or something. Then I would be reet narked off.

At this rate, Madness will have the Christmas number one, braces will be flying off the shelves, and pre-teen smoking will be at an all-time high. Fingers crossed.
