The trend of increasing loudness as shown by waveform images of “Something” by The Beatles mastered on CD four times since 1983.

The loudness war, also referred to as the loudness race, is a publicized criticism of the recording industry’s practice of digitally mastering albums with progressively increasing levels of loudness and reduced dynamic range.

The phenomenon developed as the result of the widespread adoption of the compact disc digital music format. The recording process of early CD releases differed from prior analog methods that had no set ratio of minimum to maximum level of perceived loudness. Dynamic range was dictated by the playback limitations of analog equipment, including vinyl record and cassette players. With the advent of CDs, music was encoded to a digital format with a clearly defined 16 bit dynamic range, equal roughly to 96 dB. Since most musical performances have a smaller dynamic range than that afforded by CDs, their recordings rarely approached the maximum possible levels. The loudest parts of a musical performance, the peak levels, serve to contrast with quieter passages which determine the initial volume setting chosen by the listener. With time, members of the music industry sought to promote their recordings by amplifying the average volume of a performance to fit a greater portion of the overall dynamic range of CDs. This method set recordings apart by offering listeners a subjectively “louder” listening experience.

Audio Post Production

Now that Staff engineer Steve Watson has an “Emmy” award for his audio post production skills, we figured we give many of his (and our) old time friends in film and TV an affordable option to having their sound be as good as their picture. Many “Audio-Post” rooms (especially in NYC) have barely enough “real” audio gear to record a proper voice-over, not to say anything about actually mixing gear. Just because you have a “Digi-002″ doesn’t mean you’re an engineer! We’re all in agreement, that art should not be dictated by technology – but sometimes there’s a lot at stake and experience is not just desired, but necessary.

WWSM New York

Blu-ray Authoring

Just as DVD meant a five to ten time increase in storage capacity compared to CD, Blu-ray Disc will increase DVD capacity by five to ten times. This is due, among other reasons, to the usage of a blue instead of a red laser and improved lens specifications, allowing for a much smaller focus laser beam which enables the recording of much smaller and higher density pits on the disc. Although the authoring process is realitively similar to DVD authoring, pressing costs for BluRay Discs are still quite high, but we have been persuing several replicators to find economical ways to help our clients release their products in full HD resolution.
With the emerging trend of HDTVs becoming more common, and consumers getting used to High Definition quality and expecting the same from their pre-recorded media, the logical next step is the distribution of packaged media in HD format. Blu-ray Disc is the ideal format to suit this need.

Due to its huge capacity, the Blu-ray Disc format not only allows for a movie to be stored in the absolute best High Definition quality on a disc, but it also offers room for additional extras such as making of and special features. Blu-ray Disc even offers the room to store these extras in HD quality as well. There’s no need to pack an additional disc to store these bonus materials, thereby eliminating costs for content providers and simplifying the end-user experience.

What’s more, the capacity and the enhanced interactive and network features of the Blu-ray Disc for Movie and audio Distribution format also offers new and unprecedented features. For example, additional video material may be stored on the disc in a “locked” way, only accessible to users who have been authorized to do so after an online payment procedure. Additionally, users might be able to make direct purchases of merchandise related to the disc’s content, such as sequel discs or theater tickets. The interactive features of Blu-ray Disc go way beyond those offered by DVD-Video, adding additional value to a title release on Blu-ray Disc.

Stay tuned…

Jamal Ruhe – Engineer

Jamal had the good luck to be born the year Innervisions, Dark Side of the Moon, Let’s Get It On and Quadrophenia were released. Dad was a studio owner, mom was a music teacher. He had the good luck of starting a band that would record a debut Timothy White of Billboard would later call, “Dazzling… one of my favorite albums of all time.” He also had the bad luck to have that recording shelved in a label shake up. He’s had the good luck to work on recordings at Ardent, Capitol, and Manhattan Center Studios among others, and the good luck to meet Alan Douches at the corner coffee shop!

West West Side Music has two dedicated mastering suites, and a dedicated multitrack room that just needed someone to show up to track and mix in it. The “Back Room” boasts a 2″ Studer with both 24 and 16 track head sets, a ProTools rig as well as an analog console and full compliment of analog outboard gear. Jamal is happy working on Rock, Hip Hop, Metal, Hardcore, Indie Rock, Americana and just about anything you can put up on a set of speakers. He has lived many lives in the world of music.

Through the years, has worked behind live and studio consoles as well as shared stages with a wide variety of artists. In no order, some names you might recognize: Frank Black, Dick Dale, Morris Tepper, Pavement, Low, Jon Rauhouse, Blonde Redhead, Old 97s, Modest Mouse, Giant Sand, Owen, Har Mar Superstar, Bardo Pond, Elliot Smith, Three Mile Pilot, Seven Storey Mountain, Those Bastard Souls, G Love and Special Sauce, the Flaming Lips, the Hooters, the Gin Blossoms, Orange 9mm, Shudder to Think, Weakerthans, Steve Miller Band, Ryan Adams, Pedro the Lion, Julianna Hatfield, Link Wray, Rainer Maria, Tortoise, the Refreshments, the Sea and Cake, Slash’s Snakepit, the Promise Ring, Reubens Accomplice, the Supersuckers, DJ Radar, DJ Z-Trip, Ozomatli, Quinto Sol, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Guitar Wolf, Dandy Warhols, Guided By Voices, David Garza, Marshall Crenshaw, Nils Lofgren, Nels Cline, L7, the Gossip, Mike Watt, Zeke

As I noted in my previous post, I finished my file last week. I took the holiday weekend off, just because I really needed to. But now I’m ready to get back at it!

The question is, back at what? I’ve been recording/editing/recording/editing for so long, I really had to stop and think about what comes next.

I started by calling my sound engineer and figuring out what format he wants the book in. Final verdict: ~5 minute tracks, wav format, 16 bit, 44.1kHz. Five minutes so that you can skip chapter through it, rather than having to rely solely on fast forward or rewind, as you would for an old audio cassette tape.

You know what? It takes a very long time to cut up a file like that. It’s not as simple as chop it every five minutes; you have to search through and find “natural” break points. In my case, Advent doesn’t have chapters or sections, so I had to look for the beginning of paragraphs. Then you have to export each mini-file or track one at a time, keeping track of disc and track numbers. It’s not hard, just a bit tedious.

But at least that part is finally done.

And now I’ve sent the whole thing off to the Baha’i Review Office, so hopefully I’ll hear back soon.

I also need to give the whole tracked book one more listen to make sure I didn’t screw anything up while I was doing all this. There’s lots of little steps, and if you enter one number wrong, you could mess up a track, by a little or a lot.

After that, I’m not completely sure. We’ll all have to just wait and see!

I’m not a fan of ‘home’ mastering. It is THE final step before your music reaches the masses and it should be professionally done. That being said – if you have to do it yourself (before you end up taking it to someone else) here’s an article for you.

“Mastering is the final creative step in making an album for release on CD or a digital file. In this process you sequence the songs (put them in the desired order), trim the beginning and end of each song, put a few seconds of silence between them, adjust their levels so they sound equally loud, and apply EQ, compression and limiting as needed.

You might prefer to send your CD of mixes to a good mastering engineer. This person can listen to your program with fresh ears, then suggest processing for your album that will make it sound more commercial.

Mastering engineers often have a better monitor system and better equipment than you, and typically, they have heard hundreds of recording projects done by others and can help make your CD sonically competitive.

If you plan to have your program mastered outside, do not apply any signal processing to your finished mixes such as editing, level changes, compression, normalization, fades, or EQ. Let the mastering house do it with their better equipment and software. Also, leave some headroom by recording the finished mixes at about -3 dBFS maximum in peak meter mode.” [read]

I provide world-class audio CD mastering for independent musicians. Audio Mastering is the last creative step before replication – the last chance to modify your recorded performance and take your music to another level.

What is Audio & CD Mastering?

My mastering equipment will make sure your music is ready for commercial release. With the help from state-of-the-art digital EQ, compression and limiters your finished product will sound radio ready in no time. In the recording studio, you record one song at a time, and the focus of the recording or mixing engineer is to make each song great. The result, however, is generally a collection of songs that all peak at different levels and may have different EQs. In the post-production phase (called mastering), as an engineer I unify the CD by using EQ, compression, and other dynamics processing to give it a consistent sound from track to track.

Mp3 Mastering

I can help you and your band get ready for the internet like myspace. I’ll make sure that your songs sound their best before you put them online. It’s pretty much the same process as CD mastering. Red book I master according to Sony Red Book standard.

Free CD-Mastering

Want to find out what I can do for your music? Send me one of your tracks and I will master it free of charge. Send the file to my email . You got nothing to loose.

FTP Album mastering upload you can do to my secure server.

When you decide to use my service I will give you a username and password. Price I charge 20 US dollars pr. track. Other services I can provide you with information about duplication plants for your cd in the Indonesia. Anything else you wonder about just contact me.
