I was at ExpoBrasil yesterday -a conference looking at local development strategies here in Brazil.It was striking how much expertise there is in this field which, when put alongside better public infrastructure, will work together to help many get out of poverty and at the same time help build this new articulation of prosperity that fits this high growth economy.

Ignacio Sachs spoke about new economic  directions post-crisis for Brazil. He floated this idea that the notion that being tropical is bad for development is now over.

This is an idea that crops up in many spheres, linked to environmental services and, in Brazil’s case, cultivatible land.

However, this all depends on policy. Yes,  Brazil has a lof of hydroeletric power – as it is blessed with a lot of water – but poor infrastructure planning means that  the energy matrix is getting dirtier, moving the economy away from becoming low carbon.

While biomass energy generation could be a great source of renewable energy in the future for Brazil made up of agricultural bi-products, where is it now?

In all these debates and ideas, are notions about new types of economic development. However there still seems to be an impasse between high growth and low carbon, or indeed more equitable growth.

Where I see space for this to change is in the rush to cater for low income sectors pushed by potential rewards and faltering, overleveraged developed economies. As companies adapt to meet these needs, and bring with them high ecological building standards or new green technologies around energy generation for example, new relationships of growth, wellbeing and development are being created.

As Road Trip 13 is drawing to a close, it seems to be getting even zanier! But while much of my time this weekend has involved driving through Upstate NY in the dark, the daytime has reminded me just how pretty it is up here!

As college ministers, we should all be learners – including learning from each other – and blogs are a great way to do that! defining success in college ministry: Quite providentially, several college ministry thinkers have turned their attention simultaneously to the very important topic of how we define success in college ministry. (God is a gracious Synergist, isn’t He?) HeartOfCampusMinistry began a weekly series on the topic – with a post by the much-respected Dean Thune. (I’ll be posting in that series in a few weeks!) Aaron Klinefelter wrote a great (and interesting) post on an “ecological” understanding of college ministry success. I posted on why aiming for numbers isn’t (usually) a good college ministry priority. And Ian Clark is asking the same question about how we define success.

atheist campus groups (from ABC news): Yesterday, ABC News ran a story online titled, “Atheist Student Groups Flower on College Campuses.” Check it out here. (HT: Kirby Oaks)

dvd series for college ministries: Famous book guru Byron Borger turns his attention to two new DVD series, each of which might fit a need for large-group or small-group teaching next semester. Ieri su La7, a Niente di personale, ho visto Giulio Cavalli leggere un brano di A 100 passi dal Duomo. Un brano decisamente calzante, attuale, tanto più ripensando alla recente operazione della Dia nel Sud-Ovest milanese, dove è stata colpita (mai abbastanza) l’ndrangheta che si è radicata da decenni a Milano e nell’hinterland. Non scopriamo nulla di nuovo in realtà, sono anni che la cittadinanza e la classe politica gira la testa dall’altra parte. Occhio non vede, cuore non duole. E così facendo abbiamo permesso che il cancro mafioso disperdesse le sue cellule nel nostro territorio, radicandosi, corrompendo, guastando ed uccidendo.

Parafrasando Nanni Moretti ed il tormentone di Striscia, Le parole sono importanti, ed ecco che dire le cose come stanno, raccontarle, farsi sentire da una platea sempre più ampia, meno indifferente, è importante come arrestare questi delinquenti.

La parola scritta è importante, come ben sa ad esempio Davide Bortone di www.giornalelibero.com, che in questi giorni ha affrontato a muso duro il problema delle cosche calabresi nell’hinterland milanese, ma spesso lo scritto si scontra con la superficialità di molti lettori e, peggio ancora, con una pigrizia intelllettuale che fa solo danni. Si legge se si ha l’intenzione di farlo.

Ma esiste la parola ascoltata, come quella dei video di Giulio Cavalli che trovate in calce. Il racconto, la voce, puoi ascoltarlo distrattamente, magari, poi cogli la parola, la frase che ti colpisce. perchè parla anche di te, della tua zona, dei tuoi atteggiamenti ed allora dal semplice sentire cominci ad ascoltare e, spero, a capire.

Tutti parliamo di Roberto Saviano, delle minacce ricevute, ma esistono anche altri che vivono con la scorta per le lore parole, così come Giulio Cavalli. Ed il fatto stesso che le parole siano sentite de questi criminali come una minaccia più forte delle indagini delle Forze dell’Ordine, la dice lunga. Dovrebbe farci capire il potere che abbiamo in mano.

This is my 5 minute presentation at Ignite London on Brazil @ Ignite London. For those note familiar with the format of Ignite, you get 20 slides which change every 15 seconds. Apart from the odd misspeak it all went quite smoothly though I didn’t get to talk about Manaus. I tried to give a quick run down (without the economics) of why Brazil is centre stage in a rebalancing world.

The night was excellent with titles of talks ranging from Error 404 Italy as a Country Not Found to Analogue World Design Patterns: A Look at User Behaviour. The format definitely works as you just need to stick to the brief and not go on about yourself, your business or something that no-one cares about. The event was really well put together so everyone was paying attention and enjoying filling up on lots of different bits of info.
