• Stereophile: Linn Abandons CD Players.
  After Naim’s HDX (which supposedly presents a superb sound quality) another major (and quite conservative) British high-end audio manufacturer announces a “digital streaming component”. Linn, however, goes further than Naim, claiming that they will abandon CD player production completely, saying that their top of the line DS player outperforms Sondek CD12. I wonder what will it mean for record companies if even audiophiles stop buying CDs. Will we see an iTunes-equivalent selling FLAC files from ECM, HatHhut, Winter&Winter and other good labels?

Best Tractor ส่งมาถึงผมเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว กล่องถูกแพคมาอย่างดี คุณยิปเน้นย้ำว่าควรจะค่อย ๆ เปิดกล่อง ออก และเปิดบนโต๊ะเพราะอาจจะเกิดอุบัติเหตุได้ เพราะ BT ทำจากกระจก ผมเปิดกล่องพบว่าทุกอย่างถูกจัดใส่มาอย่างดี ในกล่องประกอบไปด้วยตัวโปรเทคเตอร์ คู่มือการติดตั้ง และแว่นขยาย ผมบรรจงยก BT ออกมา ต้องบอกว่าวัศดุอุปกรณ์ที่ทำนั้นสมเหตุสมผลครับ การสกรีนสีลงบนกระจก เส้นสกรีนที่คมกริบไม่เบลอร์

ก่อนที่จะถึงวิธีการใช้งานของโปรเทคเตอร์ตัวนี้ ผมขอเอ่ยถึงข้อดีข้อเสียของ BT ของคุณยิปสักเล็กน้อย

ข้อดี

Best Tractor ออกแบบมาโดยเฉพาะสำหรับโทนอาร์มและเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงนั้น ๆ ทำให้มันสามารถทำงานได้อย่างดี เที่ยงตรง อย่างที่ไม่เคยมีโปรเทคเตอร์แบบยูนิเวอร์แซลตัวไหนเคยทำได้มาก่อน สิ่งที่ผมอยากได้มาตลอดสำหรับโปรเทคเตอร์สำหรับตั้งหัวเข็มก็คือ “ทางเดินของโทนอาร์ม” (Tonearm Path) จุดนี้สำคัญมาก เพราะเรารู้ว่าทุก ๆ การวาดโทนอาร์มจากด้านนอกสุดเข้าไปด้านในสุดนั้นทุก ๆ ระยะจะมีการเออร์เรอร์ (Error) จะมากหรือน้อยขึ้นอยู่กับการติดตั้งหัวเข็มนั่นเอง ดังนั้นถ้าโปรเทคเตอร์ที่สามารถตั้งทางเดินหัวเข็มให้เที่ยงตรงหรือใกล้เคียงที่สุด การเออร์เรอร์หรือความผิดพลาดก้จะน้อยลง

และที่สำคัญอีกประการก็คือมุมองศาของหัวเข็มระหว่างลากจากจุดนอกเข้าสู่จุดใน ก็จะเออร์เรอร์เช่นกัน ดังนั้นการตั้งจุดองศาบนจุด Null Point ทั้งด้านในและด้านนอกจะต้องเที่ยงตรง หรืออย่างน้อยใกล้เคียงความเป็นจริงมากเท่าทีจะสามารถทำได้ อีกประการที่ขาดไม่ได้ก็คือผมต้องการโปรเทคเตอร์ที่เป็นแผ่นเดียว โดยไม่ต้องเคลื่อนโปรเทคเตอร์ไปยังจุด Null Point ทั้งสองจุด (เพราะการเคลื่อนที่โปรเทคเตอร์มากเท่าไหร่ ความเที่ยงตรงก็มากขึ้นเท่านั้น สิ่งที่ผมต้องการทั้งหมดที่ผมต้องการจึงอยู่ใน BT

ข้อเสีย

BT ใช้ได้กับเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงตัวเดียวเท่านั้น ใช้ต่างยี่ห้อไม่ได้ ถ้าคุณคิดเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มบ่อย ๆ BT อาจจะไม่เหมาะกับคุณ (แต่ปีหนึ่งคุณจะเปลี่ยนโทนอาร์มราคามหาโหดสักกี่อัน)

ราคาค่าตัวของ BT 110 $US ทำให้ผมคิดหนักเหมือนกัน แต่เราซื้อเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงมาในราคาแพงเอาเรื่อง สิ่งที่เราอยากได้คือความสมบูรณ์แบบ ดังนั้นอย่าได้เสียดายเงินเพื่อก้าวไปให้ถึงจุดที่ต้องการ

BT น่าเชื่อถือแค่ไหน ข้อนี้สิครับที่ตอบยาก และผมคิดว่าสิ่งเหล่านี้ต้องลองเองถึงจะรู้

การตั้งหัวเข็มโดย Best Tractor

ก่อนอื่น คุณต้องมีเวลาสัก 2-3 ชั่วโมง แบบว่าไม่ต้องทำอะไร ไม่มีใครโทรศัพท์มากวน หรือภรรยายเรียกไปล้างจาน

1.ข้อแรกคุณต้องใช้สก๊อตเทปปิดที่แพลตเตอร์ไม่ให้มันหมุนไปมา โดยต้องแน่ใจว่ามันจะไม่เคลื่อนไปไหน เพราะถ้าเคลื่อน สิ่งที่คุณตั้งมาแต่ต้นเป็นอันเหลว ต้องเริ่มใหม่ จากนั้นนำ BT วางลงไปบนแลตเตอร์โดยวางตรง Spindle Center แล้วจึงยกโทนอาร์มวัดบนจุดแรกของ BT ซึ่งอยู่ด้านนอกสุด วางปลายเข็มให้ตรงกับเส้นโค้งทางเดินโทนอาร์ม หากปลายเข็มยังไม่ตรงให้ขยับ BT ซ้าย-ขวา ที่สุำคัญหัวเข็มของคุณต้องขนานกับหัวที่ติดตั้งหัวเข็ม วัดจนคิดว่าปลายเข็มวางบนเส้นอย่างพอดี จุดนี้คุณต้องใช้แว่นขยายช่วย มันจะช่วยได้เยอะมากครับ

Outer Effective Length จุดด้านนอกของทางเดินดทนอาร์ม วางหัวเข้มให้ตรงเส้น

2.เมื่อวัดจุดแรกได้แล้วคราวนี้ยกโทนอาร์มามาวัดจุด Overhang หรือ จุดด้านในสุดของ BT ถ้าหากหัวเข็มยังไม่ตรงกับเส้นทางเดินโทนอาร์มให้คุณขยับหัวเข็มเข้าออก โดยให้หัวเข็มขนานกับหัวติดตั้งโทนอาร์ม (เห็นไหมครับว่าการติดตั้งสองจุดนี้การขยับเพื่อตั้งแตกต่างกัน) เมื่อขยับจนหัวเข็มจรงทางเดินดทนอาร์มแล้ว ให้คุณกลับไปทำในข้อหนึ่งอีกครั้ง ถ้ายังไม่ตรงก็ให้ขยับ BT เมื่อตรงแล้วก็ทำซ้ำ ข้อสอง ทำซ้ำไปซ้ำมาจนกระทั่งทั้งสองจุดใกล้เคียงทางเดินโทนอาร์ม เป็นอันว่าสำเร็จ

จุด Overhang

ก่อนที่จะพักเพื่อเริ่มใหม่ ให้คุณนำสก๊อตเทปมาติดกับ BT เพื่อมิให้มันเคลื่อนที่ ทำอย่างระมัดระวังที่สุดอย่าให้มันเคลื่อนเด็ดขาด มิฉะนั้นคุณต้องเริ่มใหม่ทั้งหมด

พักดื่มน้ำพักหนึ่งกลับมาตั้งหัวเข็มกันต่อ

ขั้นต่อไปคือการปรับมุมองศาของจุด Null Point

1.นำหัวเข็มมาวางลงบนจุด Inner Null Point วางมันอย่างระมัดระวัง โดยให้ปลายเข็มวางลงบนจุดตัดระหว่างเส้นขนาน ขอให้คุณวางในจุดนั้นแบบตรงที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ ใช้ไฟฉายส่องเป้นการช่วย และใช้แว่นขยายช่วยมอง

วิธีการตั้งก็คือ ให้ก้านเข็มขนานกับเส้นขนาน BT ทำจากกระจก ถ้าคุณเคลื่อสายตาไปทางซ้ายหรือขวา เจ้าเส้นขนานนี้จะกลายเป้นสองเส้น นี่เป็นคำตอบว่าทำไมมันจึงทำจากกระจก ก็เพราะว่าเราต้องเล็งก้านเข็มให้ขนาดกับเส้น จุดที่สังเกตที่ดีที่สุดก็คือ คุณต้องเคลื่อนสายตาจนกว่าเส้นขนานบนด้านบนกับเงาของมันตรงกัน นั่นแหละครับจุดนั้นเป๊ะมาก แล้วดูง่ายด้วย ง่ายกว่าโปรเท็คเตอร์ที่พิมพ์ลงบนพลาสติกมาก เคลื่อนตาจนเงาเส้นขนาน นั่นแหละครับตรงมากๆ

ตอนแรกอาจจะไม่ค่อยคุ้น แต่คุณทำบ่อย ๆ มันจะง่ายขึ้นเองอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ

ถ้าก้านเข็มไม่ตรง ให้คุณขยับให้ขนาน จากนั้นก็วัดใหม่ วางหัวเข้มลงตรงจุดตัด จนตรงที่สุดนั่นแหละครับ

จุด Null Point ด้านใน ตั้วก้านเข็มให้ขนาน โดยหัวเข็มวางอยุ่บนจุดตัด

2.นำหัวเข็มไปตั้งบนจุด Outer Null Point ทำเหมือนข้อแรกทุกอย่าง

ทำสลับกันไปมาหลาย ๆ รอบ เพื่อความแน่ใจว่ามันใกล้เคียงที่สุดเท่าที่เรามีความสามารถ

3.มาถึงข้อยาก เมื่อคุณคิดว่าสิ่งที่คุณทำมาทั้งหมดตรง และใกล้เคียงแล้ว ถึงเวลาขันเจ้าน๊อตของหัวเข็มเสียที

บอกได้เลยครับว่าเมื่อคุณขันน๊อตหัวเข็มจะเคลื่อนที่ไม่มากก็น้อย ดังนั้นคุณจะต้องค่อย ๆ ขันน๊อต ค่อยตั้ง ทำจนขันน๊อตแน่นที่สุดเท่าที่ทำได้ คุณต้องกลับไปเช็คตั้งแต่ขั้นตอนที่ 1-2 อีกหน

เป็นอันเสร็จสิ้น จากนั้นการตั้งน้ำหนักหัวเข็มเป้นเรื่องที่หมูอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ และดูเวลาผ่านไปอย่างรวดเร็ว คุณอาจจะใช้เวลาระหว่าง 1-3 ชั่วโมง แล้วแต่ความโชคดี ถ้ามือคุณเที่ยงตรงราวพระเจ้าจับวาง หรือมือไม่บังเอิญไปโดนโปรเทคเตอร์จนขยับนั่นแหละครับ (สิ่งทั้งหมดเกิดกับผมมาแล้ว)

ทดสอบฝีมือ ทดสอบเสียง ถึงเวลาฟังเพลง

อะไรจะเกิดขึ้น ถ้าความพยายามของคุณกับเจ้า BT เกิดไม่ได้ผล ราคาค่างวดของมัน แรงกายที่คุณทุ่มเทลงไป แล้วเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงของคุณยังร้องเพลงเป็นเพียงครึ่งแผ่น เพราะเมื่อเลยกลางแผ่นไปแล้วเสียงมันจะแหบพร่าซ่าบ้าอย่างกับอะไรดี ความภูมิใจของคุณกับเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงราคาแพง เอาไปสู้เครื่องเล่นซีดีราคาถูกยังไม่ได้ ถ้าเป็นแบบนี้ต่อไปมีแต่หายนะเท่านั้น

ดังนั้นก่อนที่คุณจะทดสอบเสียงหลังการตั้งหัวเข็ม (ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโปรเทคเตอร์ตัวไหน) ขอให้คุณติดตั้งเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงเข้าไปยังระบบให้สมบูรณ์ตามเดิม จากนั้นเช็คสายสัญญาณต่าง ๆ ว่าต่อถูกต้องหรือเปล่า ถ้าเป็นแอมป์หลดคุณก็เปิดแอมป์อุ่นเครื่องเอาไว้ เปิดเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงให้หมุนไปเรื่อย ๆ จากนั้นก็เปลี่ยนเครื่องแต่งตัว อาบน้ำ หรือดื่มกาแฟ ชา สักแก้ว ค่อยกลับมาฟังมัน

เลือกแผ่นเสียงที่คุณเกลียดที่สุด เพราะเสียงด้านในแผ่นแหบซ่ามาตลอด และคุณไม่เคยฟังมันเลยหลังจากฟังได้หนเดียว จากนั้นก็บรรจงวางแผ่นลงบนแพลตเตอร์ที่หมุนคอยเรา ยกหัวเข็มลงบนกลางแผ่น เร่งโวลุ่ม เดินไปยังจุดสวีทสปอร์ต หลับตา ฟังเสียง

ผมจะเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอะไรดี มันเป็นสิ่งมหัศจรรย์เกินบรรยาย เหมือนผมเปลี่ยนหัวเข็มใหม่ แทรคแรกซึ่งปกติไม่ค่อยเออร์เรอร์มันให้เสียงที่ยอดเยี่ยมมาก เสียงกลาง เบส แหลม ที่ไม่เคยมาก่อน มันทำให้เห็นแล้วว่าเครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงดีกว่าซีดีหลายเท่าตัวเมื่อใช้ BT จากนั้นเมื่อโทนอาร์มวาดเข้าไปยังร่องเสียงด้านในจากกลางแผ่นจนแทรคสุดท้าย เมื่อก่อนมันเต็มไปด้วยความพร่า ที่ไม่มีโปรเทคเตอร์ตัวไหนทำได้ แต่ Best ทำได้

อาการเหนื่อยล้าหายเป็นปลิดทิ้ง ผมไม่รู้จะสดุดีเจ้า BT นี้อย่างไร แต่นั่นแหละครับมันทำมาเพื่อคนเล่นแผ่นเสียงแบบเข้าเส้น และถ้าคุณต้องการให้เครื่องเล่นแผ่นเสียงของคุณรีดศักยภาพของมันออกมาทั้งหมด การติดตั้งหัวเข็มที่ถูกต้อง คือหนทางแรกที่คุณต้องทำ

และทำเดียวนี้

You know, I have had the Metro Fi 170’s and the Monster Turbines for a few months now. You know what I have concluded so far?

The Metro Fi’s, at a third of the price, actually sound better than the Turbines. I really thought I would love the Turbines more but it is a very confusing earphone. The sound is very rich but the sound stage is smaller than the 170’s, and the clarity is not quite as good. The driver is also not as fast, and the treble is and bass detail is kind of drowned out in comparison. What it has instead is, I dunno… “body.” The sound is very colored, though not in a particularly bad way. It sounds great actually and the sound doesn’t hurt the ear after long listens, and lends well in certain genres like R&B, House, Chillout, Latin, and many types of Jazz. In other genres that I prefer to sound clean like Hard Rock or Acoustic it gives a certain “echo” to the sound which is not unwelcome.

But despite that I find that the clean but not thin sound of the Metro Fi’s on the whole sound better. The Turbines give a nice listening experience for House and similar types of genres but the 170s are great in every genre I’ve listened to them with and hold their own against the Turbines even in genres you’d think a bass heavy monster like the Turbines would own.

And actually speaking of bass, the 170’s have as much bass as the Turbines, only cleaner. Crazy. I don’t know, I’m very confused over the Turbines, I don’t know what to say. Common sense tells me it’s 3x the price and 3x better but in actuality I find the Metro Fi’s — and I’m talking the low end UE model here — are actually better overall.

This was a very special custom amp that I built for Mr. Rash. I still miss listening to it, and the sonic impression it made upon my memory is lasting.

Randy has great ears, and knowing that he hears what I hear made me enthusiastic about this build. This amp was made for him after several conversations dating back to Oct of 2007. We listened to some of his equipment together, and talked about what he values most in audio. Realistic imaging is a weakness in all mass produced equipment, even tube amplification. Randys’ equipment (Zanden, Decware and Vaughn Carina) had a huge wide soundstage, but no depth. To our ears it made piano sound like it was the size of a semi-truck but flat and 2 dimensional. It took me a while to figure out how to control image depth and width, and Randys’ new amp does just that. It is the most accurate imaging amp I have heard. I was very happy to provide this equipment to someone who so appreciates it.

A little exurb from a recent email from Randy…

” …I spent 3 hours last night listening to music ….. wow …..  : ) There is no need to tell you how good the system sounds with the amplifier you designed and built because I am absolutely sure that you already know. I could use all of the worn out superlatives that describe an outstanding piece of equipment, but they honestly would not do this amplifier justice.  The best analogy that I can use is to say that I feel sorry for everyone who does not have this amplifier as part of their audio system.  It allows music to flow into the room in a way that I have never experienced before….”

Thank you Randy, that is just the way I felt about your amp. It brings me joy that you have it now.

What good could come from that rats-nest of wires? OH, it was an opportunity to try out my prototype source equipment with Jim Dowdy’s $30,000 amplifier. And things did go well, what a fine sound, just a great time! Some new friends, and some new ideas… for even higher fidelity. Ed Schillings’ Hornfest is great fun for young and old! The Hornshoppe horns proved fantastic!

Have you ever been sitting at home, listening to your stereo and thought “I wonder if this is as good as it gets?” Well, I have. I guess it doesn’t matter much since the idea of what is “best” is different to every ear.

But that hasn’t stopped me from trying! I will say that my amp sounds better than yours. And just to show you I’m not all talk, here is the schematic of my finest design. For those who know, they know this is special. This is my gift to you, the DIY guy with great ears.

If you disagree then tell me why. I don’t want to hear you whine “OH but it uses TUBES they have DISTORTION”. You are an idiot with tin ears. And don’t whine “OH but it only has 1.5 watts, it can’t drive my BOSE” Again, you are an idiot, I’m surprised you can read a schematic.

More appropriate questions would be along the lines of  “How does it sound with 0V bias on the input tube?” Or “Is there any hum with the low DCR power supply?” Or “How big of an improvement are the Silonex optocouplers compared to transformer volume controls, potentiometers or stepped attenuators?”

How can I say that this is the best sounding amp in existence? Well, I can not. I haven’t heard them all yet. But compared to every amp I have heard so far… things look pretty good!

RECORD RELICS

Surfing around the net this morning, in a frantic bid to catch up on my reading – a technical generalist’s job is ever shifting – I found some sites that offer tools and information that I just HAD TO SHARE, because let’s face it – when you find a treasure that is FREE, you ought to share the wealth!  And these tools are FREE, no requirements to join something or sign up for something – just plain old free.

My fave of today is at: MakeUseOf.com. This particular posting has 15 .pdf manuals to download that range from Audiophile guides to free music and services, to Linux for Dummies. Literally something for everyone there, and all concise and well-written.

A service that my co-worker, Afsheen, turned me on to is SocialOomph.com – it is not a pretty site, nor is it especially easy to navigate – BUT – it allows you to automate some of the Twitter activities that busy professionals might like – for example – you can set an automated thanks for a follow; you can set to automatically follow people who follow you; and most brilliantly of all – you can set up scheduled Tweets! That is what I call ROCK AND ROLL!

If you are looking for a free alternative to Photoshop, check out Photoscape it is freeware with lots of power. Not completely as versatile as Photoshop, but for the amateur – it is a pretty powerful tool – and allows photo collage and layering.

A pesar de que las tarjetas M-Audio son muy utilizadas entre la comunidad de aficionados a la música, en todas las plataformas, ocurre que en Linux están teniendo un muy bajo soporte desde la inclusión de Pulse Audio.  Os adjunto la solución que ha funcionado para mí, y que debería funcionar para todas las tarjetas M-Audio con chip ICE1712, basada en la información que aparece referente al bug178442 de Launchpad:

Primero comprobamos el volumen de la tarjeta a través de envy24 control utility. Para ello instalamos el paquete que contiene dicho mixer:

$ sudo aptitude install alsa-tools-gui

Subimos los PCM al máximo y situamos todos los volumenes a 127 en la pestaña “Analog Volume”.

Tras esto cargamos los módulos de forma manual en lugar de automática, comentando las líneas #.ifexists #load-module #.else y #.endif y agregando dos líneas load-module en el fichero /etc/pulse/default.pa:

$ sudo vi /etc/pulse/default.pa

1) agregamos la siguiente línea en /lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules justo después de las dos líneas de SUBSYSTEMS:
