“How to define music has long been the subject of debate; philosophers, musicians, and, more recently, various social and natural scientists have argued about what constitutes music. The definition has varied through history, in different regions, and within societies.”

Really? Because my definition of music is, music is life.

. . .
GOT YOU.
You didn’t really think you’d catch me being that cliché, did you?

I hate those kiddo’s that always say:
MUSIC IS MY LIFE. I BREATHE IT. DON’T INSULT MUSIC. LOOK AT ME I’M SO COOL SAYING THIS STUFF.
Blah blah. Yeah, no thanks.

I don’t define music as life or, anything really. Music is just music.
Just how I’m just me, and you’re just you.

But the point of this entry is not about that.
It’s about sharing some awesome music-friendly sites (haha, music friendly) where you can broaden the things you listen to and explore the music world more.

By the way, while your looking through all of my music profiles, since I’ll be linking you to them, be kind and ignore my fucked up music taste, eh?
I know it’s weird. Merci!

http://pandora.com/
Pandora is a free online radio and automated music recommendation site created by the Music Genome Project. It’s a very simple yet useful site to use. All you have to do is enter a song or an artist that you enjoy, and once you hit enter, the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar/selections from that artist themselves. If you’d like to save your data, it’d be helpful to make an account. If not, then you’re free to use it however you’d like.
I love Pandora, it’s helped me find some songs and artists that I now love. If you’d like to check out my profile you can check that out here.

http://last.fm/
Last FM, like Pandora, is another free online radio and automated music recommendation site. What differentiates the two sites that there is a program on Last FM called “Audioscrobbler”. If you download the audioscrobbler, it connects to any of the music you listen to on your computer (for example, it will sync to your iTunes) and record all the data from it to build your profile before you can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious five times while patting your head and rubbing your stomach. ( ) But otherwise it pretty much has the same uses as Pandora offers.
My profile here.

http://8tracks.com
8tracks is actually a website I’ve come across recently. And it’s über cool. What 8tracks is all about is it lets you create your own music mixes, all preferably 30 minutes or so, which is roughly about 8 tracks. (Smart website name, yes?) Once you make your own account you can make mixes, and people will be able to follow you as you will be able to follow other people. And lets say you really like a song you heard on someone’s mix? There’s a little star next to the song that’s currently playing, all you have to do it click it and bam – it’s favorited and you can go back to it any time you’d like. This site is definitely one I’ll be using a lot.
Oh, and remember how I mentioned that audioscrobbler that Last FM has? Well it connects to the stuff you listen on 8tracks and records it on your Last FM profile. Sexy! And here’s my 8tracks profile.

That’s about all the good ones I’ve come across, though! Not many but they do a lot for me and they’ll do a lot for you.
If you know of any others you think I should mention, just drop me a message and I’ll gladly check it out.

Last.fm

(As published in the Racquette Newspaper)
ArticleLayout

Imagine living in the 21st century without the Internet. It’s close to impossible to even consider what that would be like. It’s a means of communication, entertainment, research and much more. You can find almost anything on the Internet in a relatively short amount of time. The world relies on the Internet as a constant source of information.

In recent years people have turned towards the Internet to discover new music. With the development of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing with services such as Napster, Internet users could obtain virtually any musical recording with a few clicks of the mouse. Then the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) came in and started suing people for illegal downloading and the situation shifted.

Along came the internet radio stations and music search engines that looked for new music for you based on what you like and what you listen to. People turned to services like Pandora, Last.fm and iLike. Each services has an associated application that can be used to “scrobble” (sync) what you’re listening to on your computer or your mp3 player with your user profile. Each services works slightly differently though.

Pandora, a service created by the Music Genome Project, recommends music and provides a personalized Internet radio station for their users. By entering an artist name or song title, a user can receive recommendations on similar music. As with other similar online services, users can rate the music that is recommended for them. The services record this data and use it in order to better cater to each of their users.

Before the songs become available for listening on Pandora they are individually analyzed by a musician. The analysis is based on a list of attributes, which contain “genes” (parameters) that were created by the Music Genome Project. These include everything from the tempo of the music to the gender of the vocalist to the amount of distortion on the guitar track. There are different sets of genes for different genres. It can take up to 30 minutes for the analysis to be completed. The results allow Pandora to make educated music recommendations for users.

Last.fm has capabilities similar to Pandora but has more of a social networking vibe supporting it. It was designed to help provide people with new music to listen to online. Users can setup a profile and write about music, connect with other listeners and more.

Last.fm employs an application called Audioscrobbler, which records plays from iTunes (or other music players) and mp3 devices. The application runs in the background and automatically opens when your preferred music player is in use. The application uses a miniscule amount of CPU power. Audioscrobbler posts the information on your profile and provides suggestions for music to check out. Other users can look at what you’re listening to and provide suggestions as well. This may having you watching over your shoulder waiting for some kind of Orwellian “Big Brother” to post your secrets on a public profile but really, it’s just modern technology helping you by providing you with music to fit your tastes.

Last.fm has grown quickly from four programmers to thousands of employees. They are owned by CBS. Their service has become quite popular and very capable. They claim to have more than 21 million users from more than 200 countries.

iLike is the youngest of the three popular services and is still considered to be in it’s Beta version. Aside from being a popular application on the social networking site Facebook, it makes use of a toolbar that runs within iTunes. While the toolbar is optional, it provides a similar function to Last.fm’s Audioscrobbler by providing the website with the music you’ve been listening to.

iLike provides users with the option to buy music off of their website as one might from the iTunes store. There are also free mp3s available every week to promote new music. Users can create playlists of music and share them with their friends. This takes the concept of the trading mix tapes with friends and brings it into the 21st century.

People using iTunes 8 can take advantage of the iTunes “Genius” feature to automatically create playlists of similar music in their iTunes library. The Genius feature must first be turned on, at which point it gathers the necessary information about your music. The information is sent to Apple and then the resulting playlists are sent back to your iTunes account. The whole process can take as little as a few minutes but will take longer given a larger library of music.

The Genius uses what is known as “collaborative filtering in order to create appropriate playlists. This means that iTunes is actually using the data gathered from all iTunes accounts with the Genius feature activated.

Once the Genius has been activated, users can play any song in their library, click the Genius button in the bottom right-hand corner of iTunes, and have a playlist created instantly. Users can limit the number of songs, refresh the playlist and save the playlist for later use.

The best thing about these services is that they’re all free. There are no trial periods or demos, everything is the full version and they’re free. You don’t need to be signed up for the services to receive some of their benefits. You can visit their websites and “test drive” it to see if you like the format. Plenty of people make use of the Internet radio capabilities of these services simply by typing in an artist and listening to similar music while they work. Other people are more interested in being involved in the social aspect of the services. They enjoy reading user reviews of music and general blogs about music.

Take advantage of the technology that exists and open your mind to new music. Your new favorite band couple literally be a few mouse clicks away.

Uppdatering. Mer läsning.

In yet another stab at procrastination I’m listening to music on my iTunes that would destroy any street cred I have for music. I like to think that I’ve got at least a half-decent musical taste, but some of this stuff is seriously atrocious. See my current listens: Coldplay (Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head, if it matters). I feel like such a fraud! I realize that I sound like an asshole just saying that this isn’t worth listening to; it’s just that Chris Martin is the definition of douche these days and generally the band could really use a slice (or ten) of humble pie.

Otherwise, I’m excited to go to Paris next week and hopefully have all my autumn listens finally ’scrobbled to my last.fm page. The last thing on it is Interpol from September 19 (good band!). Something about the Aberdeen network doesn’t let anything upload to the site – I won’t be surprised if Bon Iver spikes to my top ten artists and Sufjan Stevens takes a hit.

Good? Evil? A neutral computer program?

I’ve deleted my Last.FM page. Permanently. Wiped it cleand. Deleted all of the plays. Every single song out of my 70,000+ profile. More than three years of my listening at the computer.

Every Sunday Last.FM updated my page with my “Most Played” songs and “Most Played” artists for the week. The new software release even allowed me to scrobble plays from my iPod. No longer was I bound to the computer, I could share what I listened to at work and more!

So why did I erase my profile? The very reason I frequented the site and even logged into my account while using friend’s computers. I was obsessed. Completely. In writing this article I wanted to do two things: put into writing how music became joyless as a reminder to myself, and to seek some companionship in the form of a support group.

Yes, it’s that bad. Yes, it’s also that silly. And probably very hard to understand if you aren’t a Last.FM user yourself. But I honestly want to know if there are people out there like me! I can’t have been the only person to have descended into a kind of dark obsession, creating a myriad of rules and regulations for my favorite pastime.

What are the symptoms of Last.FM addiction? There may be more. I am breaking ground here, and I fully expect to be cited in the next DSM. All I can do is provide my own symptoms, as they gradually set in over years of use.

- Avoidance of long songs in favor of short ones. The more scrobbled, the merrier, right? Except grind bands with 30 second songs are cheating. That doesn’t count. So it looks something like this: Malevolent Creation > Opeth as well as Nasum.

- Only listen to full albums! Too many scattered songs and your Last.FM weekly roll call will be a mess of 4 or 5 play-count bands.

- Once you get on a roll with a band, you start to play that band’s music more often simply to boost their stats for the week, not because you want to hear them more.

- Competing against yourself. Watching your top bands struggle for the top spot.

- Competing against others. Don’t let their total number of plays beat yours!

- Avoiding listening to music when it won’t be scrobbled.

All of these were stupid rules that very slowly grasped the love of my life and throttled the fun out of it, until it was a stiff act that was done for something other than myself. In my mind, music is a personal thing. Last.FM embodies the polar opposite of that. There may be some of you who can listen to what you want, when you want, consequences-be-damned. But if my extensive music collection says anything, it’s that I have a tendency to become obsessed.

Deleting Last.FM may be a wise legal move as well. For those of you with illegal mp3s, scrobbling them probably isn’t a great idea. Last.FM is owned by CBS, after all. So after you download that new album leak from a torrent, think twice about scrobbling it. What a convenient way for a label to find people who obtained an illegal leak of an album. You could file this under paranoia if you want, but keep in mind a mother was recently ordered a more than $200,00 fine for making 16 Opeth songs available for download. Yes, it was on Limewire, but don’t think that the RIAA is unaware of “mp3 blogs” and Last.FM.

So, RIP Last.FM. I’m already thinking about making another one, but I am also enjoying my new found freedom. Leave a comment if you’ve experienced the addiction or if you think I’m an oddball. Or both.

On my old blog (check the wayback machine), I posted about a music stats system called foosic. Mostly, I liked that it had a foobar2000 plugin and did a great job of identifying tracks (audio fingerprinting) such that if people all had different tags—which they do—it still keeps the stats in one place and reports the title, artist, genre, etc. as the most used form.

However, almost as long as I had been using foosic, there would be times when it was just down. I emailed some people, and it came back up. Then, earlier this year, the problems became persistent, and then it was gone. So, I figured I’d have to use last.fm (formerly AudioScrobbler, hence the “as” logo). Back when I found foosic, I tried last.fm and hated it. It was slow, I had to use a custom program to submit tracks, and I didn’t really need all of the “social” crap they laud.

Funny thing is, when you only have one choice, it starts looking pretty appealing! Plus, I found foo_audioscrobbler, which completely sidesteps the need for the external program. I still don’t really care about the last.fm community, but band suggestions are nice, and pretty relevant. So, certainly if you are a foobar user and want some external playback stats, last.fm should work for you. And, if you are interested, you can see what I’ve been listening to. I’ll even be your last.fm friend if I know you… isn’t that special?

Last.FM has become a phenomena! And there would be very less people who would deny this. I myself is a last.fm fanatic, helps me stay up-to-date with current music trends and latest music from all over the world. Well, music podcasting ( for all budding bath singers ) is another thing that can be done on Last.FM. Well, coming to the point of this post, the last.fm website doesn`t have a RPM version of their audio-scrobbler client. Which, kind of took me by surpirse, provided that RPM based distros are more in use (Well am a Debian fanatic too). But the goodfellas at last.fm hav included the source for their last.fm client though.

So I just compiled from the source and built an RPM package out of it. You can download it from here. I have tested this on RHEL 5, Fedora 9 and OpenSUSE 10.2, and it worked fine, out-of-the-box on all (Dont` worry the link for the download is from my googlepages home). You can visit my last.fm page here

Ich will ungern alles neu in mehrere Playlists einsortieren müssen.

Metal archives:

Metal Archives
This is the number one site on the web for band information. I doubt there’s a metalhead out there who hasn’t used this site, in fact if they’re anything like me they use it daily. If you ever can’t quite remember what label released an album, what year it came out, what the band’s line up was, or any other trivia, check here first. Metal archives also has reviews for albums, the album art, band logos, etc.

Last.fm (Previously known as audioscrobbler):

Last FM
Much like “google”, “scrobble” is a made-up word that has found its way into the lexicon of internet nerds worldwide. LastFM works like this: you install a plugin to iTunes or Winamp, and everytime you listen to a song it gets scrobbled to your profile on the LastFM website. Every Sunday LastFM releases your charts, showing your most played artists, songs, etc. These charts can be embedded as images to blogs, forums, etc, and are a way of showing off your mp3 collection as well as your personal taste. LastFM also offers links to Youtube videos of bands, pictures, discussion boards, and more. By browsing your musical “neighbors” you can generally find bands that you’ve never heard, and are likely to enjoy.

Blabbermouth:

Blabbermouth metal news
The CNN of metal news. Blabbermouth is updated constantly, but features some bias. Roadrunner Records runs Blabbermouth, so expect a lot of articles about Dave Mustaine, Opeth, and other Roadrunner bands. They do a lot of news on mainstream bands but plenty of smaller bands get articles too. I have this site set as my homepage, so everytime I start Mozilla, I get an update on the music world. Blabbermouth is also equally famous for their comment system. News articles get vicious replies and heated debates start in many of the postings.

Soulkiller Webzine:

Soulkiller
A primitive version of Blabbermouth. Not a check-daily site, but they post some news you don’t always see on Blabbermouth.

All CD cover, tray, booklet scans

AllCD covers
A great site that has hi-res scans of CD and DVD covers, inlay trays and back covers. This site covers all genres of music, not just extreme metal. Very useful for looking at out of print CD inlays and for saving the images, incase you want to use some as a slide show screensaver or as desktop backgrounds.

More metal CD scans

Truemetal.org Wallpaper
This is a more basic site, but it still has some great hi-res scans of some of the best art out there.
